Generations 3ds was a way faster game than this, lol. Still, that game was half based on sonic rush, so that makes sense.

... I think I'd take sonic rush gameplay over that footage though, yeesh.

Edit: for sheer comparisons sake I pulled generations 3ds out and the stages there look way more detailed despite sonic having to blitz through them at rush speed

This is a playstation version, there's PS button prompts there
Oh. Oh dear. Uh, I guess there will be a day one patch that makes it look better…yeah, that’s gotta be it! (Let me have my copium, damn it!)

there's more footage on that youtube channel. the rest of it looks much better. that stage had a budget of like $3. what the hell lmao. bad first impression online.
Sega's going with the same marketing tactic they used for Frontiers, I see :sneaky:

This is funny because I was just about to reply "does it?" because of the factory boss. It doesn't look good either. Tails walking animation looks cheap and the sound design lacks impact or space. Also Robotnik's face is ...

One thing that really confuses me

Launching a 2D platformer at full price is just super risky. Literally no publisher other than Nintendo has done this in a decade.

But Sega made this full price even though… It’s just obviously super low budget?

The poor texture quality, lack of animations, and sloppy collision detection all point to a very low budget title so I’m not sure why they had the confidence to launch this at $60.

I don't understand why they didn't bring Christian Whitehead back. Like, I'm happy that he's making his own games now, but wtf Sega?
The story is that both parties tried to figure out what they wanted out of a new 2D Sonic, so they amicably parted ways to do their own thing.

The end result? Well, hey, at the very least, Penny's Big Breakaway looks good.

Is that just the Act Clear jingle reused from Mania?

I think this game was the cheapest made full priced game in the last few years (Knuckles’ Super Sonic form in spoilers)

in all fairness this is pretty much what knuckles' super form has been ever since it's introduction in sonic 3. only sonic himself (later shadow and silver, and blaze kinda) ever got a proper super form

Eggman having no laughing sound feels so cheap

Really disappointed in how this (seemingly) turned out, because everything before the leaks did seem super positive to me. Not Mania-levels of excitement but it still seemed like a proper follow-up to the old games, besides co-op being under-baked. It's still (probably) better than Sonic 4 but that's such a low standard the game would have to be a total dumpster fire to not clear that bar.

I was thinking that but then I remembered Sonic 4 was $10 and this is $60...

It's weird how wildly inconsistent the quality is. That carnival stage didn't look amazing or anything, and it felt a bit derivative of Casino Night, but it was a real-ass Sonic level that had cool music. But then I'm seeing and hearing about other parts of the game that are just so bad...

uh

when has Super Knuckles ever not looked like that?

This is the first Super Knuckles appearance in a full priced game since Sonic Heroes two decades ago (and his design in Sonic Heroes looks different) and the second appearance of Super Knuckles in a full priced game in thirty years.

It feels like you can do more than basic sparkles.

If this was an intentional callback in a game full of super high quality assets, it would be whatever, but the textures just seem so bad that it makes thr sparkles look cheap.

(I also don’t think it looks good with this Knuckles design and art style)

It looked bad from the very first trailer, people didn't notice because they're doing Green Hills for the 57th time and people are used to it looking generic.

...Knuckles didn't have a Super form in Heroes. Sonic went super then carried Tails and Knuckles with him in a couple weird golden power orbs. His design looks different in Heroes because it's.. literally just Knuckles, inside a golden orb.

I don't get how you'd consider "consistent character design" to be "an intentional callback."

For thirty years Sonic's super form has been yellow with upturned spikes and sparkles, and Knuckles' super form has been just Knuckles in a lighter red and sparkles. That screenshot is what Super Knuckles looks like. I don't understand what the issue is. Textures? If textures were the problem then why'd you share a picture specifically of Super Knuckles as though they had gotten it wrong?

*looks at the part in his draft ST where he talks about them finally not doing another Green Hill redux*
...welp

Super Knuckles always looked super rushed and cheap was the thing. This was very understandable in 1994 and was understandable for indie-ish games.

It looks pretty bad for a major release in 2023 when considering how bad a lot of the art assets look too, giving a general vibe of being extremely low budget.

as long as sega keeps pushing Sonic to release titles every year without stopping you’ll keep getting subpar products

It specially sucks because I already paid for this since my wife is a huge Sonic fan

I don't believe that's the case at all. You can have yearly releases in a franchise and it can do fine, Sonic especially since 2D platformers aren't the most complex games in the world. Like a Dragon already got Ishin, and is getting Gaiden and Infinite Wealth in the next 3 months. There will be 3 Like a Dragon games coming out within the span of a year. Unless something terrible goes wrong and they throw everything out the window, that'll be 3 good games coming out in a single year for 1 franchise coming out of 1 studio under Sega. This studio pumps out game after game yearly, only taking 1 year off to come out with multiple the next. The Sonic Team has some major problems that need addressed internally it seems. And until that's done the quality of Sonic games will suffer.

Edit: I will add I do think most games need more time to cook and often longer development times lead to better games. However, if Sega wants to keep Sonic releases consistent, they could do it if they really tried.

it’s giving SV a run for its money, that’s for sure

Not even the worst Sonic game will be as shit as SV was in its performance / frame rate haha. I even tried an unpatched 2077 disc recently on console and it wasn't as bad.

I had the impression that this game was made by the Mania team. If it wasn't so then the reactions make sense.
As far as we know, the only involvement the Mania team had in this was adapting that physics/momentum engine into 2.5D. The guy who created the Retro Engine (that all the modern Genesis ports and Mania run in) conformed as much. Outside of that the Mania composer is collaborating with the Blast/Adventure composer, and everything else is Sonic Team and Arzest.

So...I should just play Sonic Triple Trouble 16-bit instead?
You should play that regardless. If you have ever been interested in STT, it’s the definitive version of the game, hands down. And that was before the QoL updates and playable Amy Rose! Honestly, Sega should pay the guy/team that did it and port it systems.

Ah, the time old refrain of people going full cope over mediocre reviews
there is a ton of games that got bad reviews that I ended up loving, If a game looks interesting to me I dont let reviews stop me from playing games or else I would probably miss out on so many good game experiences
