Discussion One Piece |ST| Over One Thousand Pieces (unmarked spoilers upon official chapter release)

For what it's worth, a good chunk of Oda's regular breaks were mandated by editorial so he doesn't work himself to death. It's nice that he takes some off-time by his own volition for once.

It's a far cry from the man who literally wanted to work from his hospital bed when he went in for an operation a decade ago. Editors had to force him to stop. Even with his more frequent month long breaks recently, it was almost always to work on something else. Glad he's finally taking some time for himself.

Jump in general is much better with scheduling nowadays. Other big series like Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia have a similar break schedule to One Piece. Though it's probably still not enough - Horikoshi constantly sounds like he's dying. But at least there's been huge progress made on this front

Hey I am always up for people taking breaks for their health, and we all know manga artists need the break.
Oda's official message on his break:

GJKc_nWXcAA6V0n
Also it's interesting to note that this translation misses something major. When he is saying "what is One Piece" the actual translation is "more importantly it's about time I start figuring out what the ONE PIECE actually is! This going to keep me quite busy, I'll have you know. <---(sounds severe but NBD)"
That wording is very interesting. So it sounds like part of his break is to start doing some stuff for the finale, which makes sense. Definitely want to try your best to nail it

Definitely sounds like Oda is gearing up for the endgame, which is mindboggling! But it makes sense given how the story has developed so far.

I think we also talked about this before. I don't think people would mind if authors released 2-3 chapters a month. Try publishing more series so there's always something to read every week. No idea if the math would permit that, but it would be nice.

Lucci immediately knew what was going on and trying to save Kaku was kinda wholesome in a way I didn't expect from him.

Also Zoro fans must be in shambles considering how that ended.

Actually, when he roared in the air, kinda reminded me of Luffy roaring before doing his Jet Gatling, but instead of the power of friendship, Lucci was charged by the power of murder.

Wrapping up Zou arc in my reread, I still feel like Zunesha is one of the coolest concepts Oda ever implemented into One Piece:

I was completely wrong about One Pace versions of Arabasta being done this year. For some reason they're releasing Skypiea and Water 7 despite still missing ~6 eps of Arabasta.
Quoting myself from last year because they finally finished Water Seven and released the first episode of Arabasta in a while. 5 Arabasta eps left, after that they got a big chunk of Skypiea to do: 34 episodes cut into ~15.

edit: welp, apparently it was an April Fool's "joke" šŸ˜

Surprised no one posted the April Fools vid of Jacob. He's a treasure and hey

We seem to have a hint of Little Garden.

RTTP, but I finally saw FILM Red for the first time. And yeah, I was not expecting a semi-musical rock opera.

I love it so much. And Uta has gotta be my favorite film antagonist aside from Z.

Just a little over 30 chapters until I'm caught up on my OP reread. Didn't think I'd manage to be done with it before the hiatus ended but I'll be finished this weekend for sure. Egghead is a really fun arc to read in bulk, probably the best paced OP arc of the timeskip.

An additional showrunner? Why?

For what it's worth, those are some pretty good shows he's been involved in. At least the two I have seen (Series of unfortunate events and Clarence). And there's been a lot of positive buzz around the new Percy Jackson show too.

Finished my reread about a week ago and now we're back from the 3 week hiatus!

Hopefully the timer wraps up soon

So... Vegapunk has to have some sort of contingency plan in case someone tries to prevent the broadcast from airing... right?

Also of course the Giants have fermented shark as proviant

Man, what a chapter. Everyone trying to help out Robin is awesome and bring a smile to my face.

Also just saw this tweet

Everything is coming together!!!

A post on the other site pointed this out, but I can't believe it was never noticed. The Celestial Dragons aren't wearing space suits, they're diving suits. (Either in preparation for the sinking world or from a previous sinking we don't know about yet.)

But they've likely long forgotten the meaning behind their suits so they still wear them for their pretentious egos.

There's also been numerous hints pointing to the rising sea levels, some of the most dramatic being the worsening Aqua Lagunas at Water Seven, and a huge chunk of Wano Kingdom submerged. And to think Vegapunk has just gotten started on his spiel.
Old Wano's only submerged because the walls around it trapped rainwater. Iceburg though, now there's a big brain forward thinker

I have no idea about other countries and since when it actually has been there but I just stumbled upon the Monsters oneshot on Netflix?

Don't forget Arabasta hinted at this all the way back, The sea has been slowly overtaking the freshwater river.

Anyone interested in some 4kids One Piece history, because Erica Schroeder, Luffy's former actress dropped some interesting details about her time as Luffy. Apparently the Japanese staff at Toei were heavily involved in choosing her as Luffy and guiding her for the first 3 episodes.

That's really cool. And she even was allowed to have some input in Luffy having his distinct 4kids laugh.

For those who don't remember, it was his, "Huh-huh-huh!"

Not that I personally had any doubt, but a lot of people were theorizing that they'd cut out some of the smaller stories, such as Little Garden. Uh I guess they could still cut out the island itself and put Mr. 3 and the giants somewhere else, but you know what I mean lol

Yeah, I was one of those people that thought they'd probably cut/streamline Little Garden to have more room for the Baroque works and Drum Island stuff. But you're right, they could still have those elements appear elsewhere.

As long as they nail Arabasta in hopefully the next season, I'm fine anyway :D

I'll be pretty disappointed if they don't get to Alabasta this season. Chopping up that arc is going to make the second season feel diminished and likely mitigate hype going forward. There isn't really a good climax comparable to Luffy defeating Arlong before Alabasta.

With a 10 episode order, they should be able to cover everything. But who knows if Netflix will give them that.

I kinde hope it ends with Luffy beating up Wapol/Chopper joining. Alabasta really could use a full season or at least like half of it.

I wonder how many arguments are being had whether it's Arabasta or Alabasta in that writer's room. Oda's flip flopping on the romanization throws me off so much.

I don't see why Alabasta shouldn't be able to comfortably get half a season to itself. East Blue was 100 chapters covered in eight episodes. The entire Baroque Works saga, off the top of my head, was just a bit over 100 chapters itself too right? I think it ended around chapter 215-ish? Stretching everything before Alabasta proper to an entire season would be painful. If they find they want more room for Alabasta, they can easily condense other stuff. Laboon and Whiskey Peak will almost assuredly be a single combined episode, for example

Not the East Blue we covered, don't forget we have Loguetown to get to. That being in the awkward spot it is, is what throws this all off.

Oh right I almost forgot they didn't cover Loguetown lol. I think it should still be fine if they can get ten episodes though, can't imagine Loguetown getting more than one. But if they only get eight they could still make it work by streamlining other things like they did Baratie. I would've said Little Garden originally, but since they're teasing it... Whiskey Peak is probably the most expendable, should they need to make hard choices

I just think it would be best for the health of the show if they can finish season 2 with the end of Alabasta. It's a big climactic moment for the series and establishes a lot of important things, and generally considered a contender for the best arc in the manga. Ending season 2 with a cliffhanger in Drum Island or something will extinguish a lot of excitement both with the diehard fans and newcomers, not to mention it'll possibly be another year or two before we get a follow up, and you have to get a lot of cast members to come back for another season. No matter how you slice it, it just seems like a bad idea to me.

https://www.whats-on-netflix.com/news/8-new-characters-confirmed-to-appear-in-season-2-of-one-piece/

Thanks to recent casting calls, seven new characters have been revealed to appear in the highly anticipated second season of the live-action One Piece series. None should be too surprising to long-term fans of the source material, but these are in addition to the previously announced new characters: Tony Tony Chopper and Smoker.

Casting calls have been underway throughout the first half of the year as the team behind the show gears up for production on season 2 over the summer. We recently learned that filming is scheduled to get underway in June, with the second season going by the codename of Project Renaissance.

New casting call. Really the only ones who surprised me are (Ms Valentine's Day and Mr. 5. Thought they'd be written out.)

Just as a reminder since the official translation isn't out for a couple of days:
SPOILER POLICY: Please use spoiler tags for leaks/rumors/etc. Tags are not needed when the chapter is officially released on the Viz/Shonen Jump app.

Looks like we're being set up for another
great flashback
. This arc keeps delivering.
I'd be EXTREMELY surprised if we get a flashback now. Ain't no way Oda showing us any of the void century till Laugh Tale. I don't even expect a silhouette next chapter lol

We are getting the good stuff, thank you Vegapunk,

Vegapunk further reinforces that the world is sinking, and the Elders know about this. He also talks about the Void Century. He doesn't have the full story, but among the things he can verify as truth, is that there was a man who had the powers of Nika, the god of the sun. His name is Joyboy, and he was the very first pirate.

Chapter's out now and it's incredible hearing this info. Next chapter is gonna have the stream interrupted. I feel it in my bones.

This chapter also reinforced to me that the celestial dragons, at least the "common ones" don't know their own history aside from the propoganda they've been fed since birth.
