NES Works Episode 84: Life Force & World Class Track Meet

  • Just released for the public is the NES Works episode that looks at both of August 1988's NES releases. The awesome Gradius followup Life Force and the Power Pad pack-in World Class Track Meet which is almost the same game as the much rarer Stadium Events. For Patrons, two age-restricted videos on Golgo 13: Top Secret Episode and Kid Dracula.

NES Works Gaiden #29: Kid Dracula (age restricted video)

  • This week's public video is Jeremy's annual Halloween video on Castlevania with the Mega Man-inspired Castlevania parody game Kid Dracula for the Famicom. It's age restricted because of Sexy Parodius footage. It's another great video though. For Patrons, there is an age restricted video on Golgo 13 Top Secret Episode and a new Segaiden episode that covers Zoom 909, Choplifter, and Pitfall II for the SG-1000 and Jeremy plans to run through the rest of the SG-1000 to close out the year (7 more episodes I think?)

NES Works Episode 85: Golgo 13 Top Secret Episode (age-restricted)

  • This week's public video is an age-restricted video on Golgo 13: Top Secret Episode which was publisher Vic Tokai's debut on the NES. An ambitious but flawed licensed video game, it's amazing what Nintendo of America let the game keep in. Jeremy also briefly explains what gekiga is and discusses Golgo 13's late creator, Takao Saito. For Patrons, two Segaiden episodes, one on Zoom 909/Choplifter/Pitfall II and the other on Doki Doki Penguin Land & Drol.

Segaiden episode 18: Zoom 909/Choplifter/Pitfall II

  • The Segaiden marathon begins with three SG-1000 versions of popular games from the early 1980s that show the player no mercy. Patrons have access to two additional Segaiden episodes that cover Doki Doki Penguin Land & Drol as well as Chack 'N Pop & Bank Panic.

Segaiden episode 19: Doki Doki Penguin Land & Drol

  • This week's public video is two video games about keeping children safe with Doki Doki Penguin Land which would see follow up games on other systems and Sega's conversation of Drol, a now obscure game from Broderbund. Patrons get two more Segaiden videos on Check N' Pop & Bank Panic and on Rock N' Bolt, Elevator Action, & Sokoban. After the Segaiden videos comes the Patron request videos.

Segaiden episode 20: Chack 'N Pop & Bank Panic

  • More Segaiden this week as Chack 'N Pop, a precursor to the Bubble Bobble series is looked at for the SG-1000. Also Bank Panic, a light gun type game that doesn't use a light gun. Patrons get a Segaiden episode featuring Rock 'N Bolt, Elevator Action, and Sokoban and an NES Works episode with three shooters (Legendary Wings, Xevious, Galaga)

    Segaiden episode 21: Rock N' Bolt/Elevator Action/Sokoban

  • Another Segaiden video this week as Activision's Rock N' Bolt comes to the SG-1000 along with a version of Taito's Elevator Action done by Tose and yet another version of Sokoban. Patrons have access to an NES Works episode on a trio of shooters (Legendary Wings/Xevious/Galaga) and more Famicom 1985 with two Konami games (Antarctic Adventure and Yie Ar Kung Fu) and a Jaleco/Tose game that sucks (Ninja-kun).

NES Works Episode 86: Legendary Wings/Xevious/Galaga

  • This week's public video is NES Works Episode 86 on a trio of shooting games for NES: Capcom's Legendary Wings, and a Namco duo of classics Xevious and Galaga, both published by Bandai. Good stuff. Patrons get videos on Famicom 1985 lineup of Antarctic Adventure/Yie Ar Kung Fu/Ninja-kun and more Segaiden with Championship Lode Runner, H.E.R.O., and Champion Ice Hockey. Bright days for Segaiden ahead too.

NES Works Gaiden #30: Antarctic Adventure/Yie Ar Kung Fu/Ninja-kun

  • This week's public video is on a trio of 1985 Famicom games which consists of a duo of Konami games(Antarctic Adventure and Yie Ar Kung Fu) that only hint at the future juggernaut for Nintendo platforms (and much later, Sony platforms) and a Jaleco/TOSE arcade port that is unpleasant and throughly mediocre (Ninja-kun). Frontloaded video in terms of quality games. Patron videos are a pair of Segaiden videos on Championship Lode Runner/H.E.R.O./Champion Ice Hockey (a very champion episode) and on Hang On II and Bomb Jack (a duo of arcade ports). Master System coverage is nigh!

Segaiden episode 22: Championship Lode Runner/H.E.R.O./Champion Ice Hockey

  • This week's public video is a Segaiden episode with Championship Lode Runner, which is essentially kaizo Lode Runner and the SG-1000 version looks more like the original Apple II version. A port of Activision's H.E.R.O. for the SG-1000 (originally was on the Atari 2600) and perhaps the best sports game on the SG-1000, Champion Ice Hockey are also featured. Patrons get a Segaiden video on Hang On II and Bomb Jack for the SG-1000 as well as another Segaiden episode featuring Hang On and Teddy Boy Blues for the Mark III (Master System).

    0
Segaiden Episode 23: Hang On II & Bomb Jack

  • This week's public episode wraps up the SG-1000 for 1985 with Hang On II, which we now know was released in December 1985, two months after the Mark III launch, and Bomb Jack, which was an arcade port. Patrons get access to a Segaiden episode on the Mark III and its first two games: Hang On and Teddy Boy Blues, and a NES Works Gaiden episode that continues Famicom 1985 coverage with Chack 'N Pop (we now know the SG-1000 version launched the same month as the Famicom version), Dig Dug, and Flappy.

Segaiden Episode 24: Mark III/Hang On/Teddy Boy Blues

  • And we start a new year with a new Sega console, the Mark III or the Master System with this week's public video. October 1985 was the Japanese launch with this backwards compatible console and the first two games were Hang On and Teddy Boy Blues. Patrons get access to a NES Works Gaiden episode on Famicom 1985 games Chack 'N Pop, Dig Dug and Flappy, and a Segaiden episode on 1986 SG-1000 games C-So!, The Castle, and Gulkave.

    NES Works Gaiden #31: Chack 'N Pop/Dig Dug/Flappy

  • On this week's public video, Famicom 1985 continues with three somewhat familiar games on Video Works. Chack 'N Pop, the proto Bubble Bobble already seen on Segaiden; Dig Dug, the Namco classic already seen for the Atari 7800; Flappy, a Sokoban like game seen many years ago in its Game Boy incarnation. Patrons get two Segaiden videos on the tail end of the SG-1000 with C-So, The Castle and Gulkave in one, and Ninja Princess, Super Tank and Champion Kendo with the other. Getting very close to wrapping up SG-1000 completely.

    Segaiden Episode 25: C-So/The Castle/Gulkave

  • The SG-1000 coverage is winding down with the 4th to last video on it. This week's public video is on 1986 SG-1000 games C-So, The Castle (a very ambitious game that required a cartridge rather than a card) and Gulkave (one of the Shitennou of that system and a good game by Compile). Patrons get more Segaiden with an episode on Ninja Princess, Super Tank and Champion Kendo and the penultimate SG-1000 episode on a Graphics Tablet accessory, Wonder Boy and Champion Billiards.

    0
    Segaiden Episode 26: Ninja Princess/Super Tank/Champion Kendo.

  • The 3rd to last SG-1000 episode is this week's public video as more 1986 offerings are released. Ninja Princess which would receive a better known spin-off on the Master System known as The Ninja, Super Tank a throwback to Borderline, and Champion Kendo, yet another mediocre sports game. Patrons get the penultimate episode on the SG-1000 with a graphical tablet, Wonder Boy and Champion Billiards and a new NES Works episode with Hudson's NES debut with Adventure Island and Milon's Secret Castle. Jeremy uses the Game Genie to get through those.

    Segaiden Episode 27: Graphics Tablet/Wonder Boy/Champion Billiards

  • A trilogy of Wonder Boy/Adventure Island episodes begins with today's public video, the penultimate episode on the SG-1000 with a graphic tablet that works on the console, Wonder Boy, an ambitious arcade port hampered by the hardware, and Champion Billiards, a secret port of Lunar Pool by Compile. Patrons get an NES Works episode on Adventure Island and Milon's Secret Castle, as well as a patron request episode of NES Works Gaiden on Adventure Island IV, the final officially licensed Famicom game with that game moving the Adventure Island series into the exploratory action genre that Wonder Boys games had already gone into.

NES Works Episode 87: Hudson's Adventure Island & Milon's Secret Castle

  • Hudson debuts on the NES with this week's public video. September 1988 saw Hudson's Adventure Island, a reskin of Wonder Boy that stays pretty faithful to the arcade game and Milon's Secret Castle, an attempt at an exploratory action game that doesn't really reward backtracking. Patrons get a NES Works Gaiden episode on Adventure Island IV by Patron Request and a Segaiden episode on the last two SG-1000 games: The Black Onyx and Loretta no Shouzou Sherlock Holmes. More Game Boy 1990 episodes coming soon!

NES Works Gaiden: Adventure Island IV

  • This week's public video was a patron request and neatly wraps a trilogy of videos on Wonder Boy and Adventure Island. This was the last officially licensed Famicom game. Patrons get videos on the last two SG-1000 games, The Black Onyx and Loretta no Shouzou Sherlock Holmes and a 40 minute wrapup on the system itself.

Segaiden #28: Loretta no Shouzou Sherlock Holmes/The Black Onyx

  • And the first public video on page 2 of this thread (threadmark #18) is the last two SG-1000 games, Loretta no Shouzou Sherlock Holmes, a point and click adventure game, and The Black Onyx, an important Wizardry clone that was one of the first commercially successful JRPGs. Patrons get the SG-1000 wrapup and a new Game Boy Works episode on Godzilla and Nekojara Monogatari. More Game Boy on the way too.

Segaiden episode 29: SG-1000 in Review

  • This week's public video is a 40 minute recap/retrospective on the past year's look at the SG-1000. There's now definitely better information about it now than when Jeremy had started. This is the second console library he's completed. Patrons get a pair of Game Boy Works episodes: one with Godzilla and Nekojara Monogatari, and the other with Gremlins 2 and Pocket Stadium (which shouldn't be confused with Pocket Monster Stadium).

Game Boy Works 126: Godzilla & Nekojara Monogatari

  • This week's public video takes us back to December 1990 and Game Boy for two good games, Godzilla, a puzzle platformer made by Compile and Nekojara Monogatari, a Kemco RPG using a engine they developed for a previous game. Patrons get a Game Boy Works video on Gremlins 2 and Pocket Stadium and a NES Works Gaiden episode on a trio of familiar games for Famicom: Wrecking Crew, Hyper Olympics, and Spartan-X

Game Boy Works 127: Gremlins 2 & Pocket Stadium

  • This week's public video has a Sunsoft licensed game for Gremlins 2 and an Atlus baseball game that is quirky. Patrons get a pair of NES Gaiden videos: one on Wrecking Crew, Hyper Olympic, and Spartan-X and the other on Star Force, Elevator Action and Field Combat.

NES Works Gaiden #33: Wrecking Crew, Hyper Olympic, and Spartan-X

  • This week's public video is a 1985 trip through the Famicom with three games familiar to NES owners: Wrecking Crew, Hyper Olympic (half of Track & Field) and Spartan-X (known to us as Kung Fu). Patrons get more 1985 Famicom videos: one video on Star Force, Elevator Action and Field Combat, another video on the Japanese exclusive games Road Fighter, Warpman, and Door Door (Enix's debut on Famicom), all of those good games too.

NES Works Gaiden #34: Star Force/Elevator Action/Field Combat

  • This week's public video is another trio of Summer 1985 Famicom games with two games somewhat familiar to NES owners (Star Force and Elevator Action, the latter being a good Micronics port) and one Japanese exclusive, Field Combat, a sort of reverse Galaga. Two more Famicom videos for patrons, one on games the US didn't get (Road Fighter, Warpman and Door Door) and one in which Jeremy accidentally sequence broke (Robot Block, Geimos and 10 Yard Fight)

NES Works Gaiden #35: Road Fighter/Warpman/Door Door

  • This week's public video is a trio of Famicom games the US didn't get: Road Fighter (Europe did get it in 1992, was on famiclones), Warpman (Evercade got it though) and Door Door, which was Enix's debut on Famicom. Patrons get a pair of Famicom 1985 episodes, one on Robot Block, Geimos and 10 Yard Fight (which has Geimos and 10 Yard Fight too early) and the other on Zippy Race, Super Arabian, and Front Line.

NES Works Gaiden #36: Robot Block/Geimos/10 Yard Fight

  • This week's public video (which has a Dr. Slump related eyecatch) continues the Famicom 1985 journey with Robot Block, which was essentially a half finished tech demo, Geimos, an interesting shooter developed by Micronics (!) under an alias and 10 Yard Fight, a decent take on American football that would eventually be eclipsed by Tecmo Bowl. Last two games were accidentally put into Jeremy's production order too early. Patrons get NES Works Gaiden videos on a trio of underwhelming games (Zippy Race, Super Arabian, and Front Line) and a video on the difficult but seminal game The Tower of Druaga.

    0
NES Works Gaiden #37: Zippy Race/Super Arabian/Front Line

  • This week's public video has 3 games that Japan had spared us of. Irem's Zippy Race looks better than the SG-1000 version but plays worse. Sunsoft's Super Arabian is a not-great Popeye clone and shows that Sunsoft had a lot to learn before they'd give us classics like Blaster Master. Taito's Front Line is an arcade port of the game that inspired Commando and Ikari Brothers and many others but the port is definitely not fun. Patrons get NES Works Gaiden videos on The Tower of Druaga, a game that will get referenced a lot, and another video on three games with robots (Astro Robo Sasa, Honshogi, and Robot Gyro/Gyromite)

NES Works Gaiden #38: The Tower of Druaga

  • This week's video is on a formative Famicom game from Namco: The Tower of Druaga. The arcade game was a social phenomenon in Japan and the Famicom port neatly shows a transition from arcade ports to longer more console focused action-adventure games like the Legend of Zelda, which was inspired by Druaga. Patrons get a Famicom 1985 video on a robotic trio of games (Astro Robo Sasa, Honshogi, and Robot Gyro) and a new NES Works episode on a trio of better with multiplayer games that close out September 1988 (Jackal, Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy!).

NES Works Gaiden #39: Astro Robo Sasa/Honshogi/Robot Gyro

  • This week's public video is on a trio of robot themed games. ASCII's Astro Robo Sasa which is somewhat interesting, Sega's Honshogi which plays well for for mid-80s shogi video game, and Robot Gyro which the West knows as Gyromite. Patrons get a pair of NES Works episodes, the first closes out September 1988 with Jackal and a pair of Rare-developed game show games: Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune, the second continues the multiplayer theme with Bubble Bobble, a beloved NES game and Racket Attack, a decent TOSE/Jaleco tennis game.

NES Works #88: Jackal/Jeopardy!/Wheel of Fortune

  • And this week's public video raps up September 1988 for NES with a pretty good cooperative shooter by Konami (Jackal) and a duo of Rare developed/GameTek published game show games (Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune). Patrons get a pair of NES Works videos: one on Bobble Bubble and Racket Attack, and the other on Magmax, Seicross and Spy vs Spy.

    0
NES Works #89: Bubble Bobble & Racket Attack

  • This week's public video has Taito's Bubble Bobble, a multiplayer classic for the NES and TOSE and Jaleco's Racket Attack, which was part of Jaleco's Moero sports series in Japan. It's the first NES tennis game since NES launch title Tennis. That Bubble Bobble earworm, oh yeah. Patrons have another NES Works episode that covers a pair of FCI games (Magmax and Seicross) and a Kemco port of Spy vs Spy. Patrons should also be getting another NES Works tomorrow too that includes Ghostbusters, which was a port of the David Crane designed Commodore 64 game (the NES port is bad, the SMS port is better).

NES Works #90: MagMax, Seicross and Spy vs Spy

  • This week's public video has two offerings from FCI (which was Pony Canyon's American branch) in the form of Nichibutsu arcade ports that debuted on Famicom in 1986: MagMax a bold fight against copyright as ersatz Gundam fights against bootleg King Ghidorah (as recounted by Jeremy Parish), and Seicross, an auto scrolling action racer. Kemco makes their NES debut with Spy vs Spy, a computer port (Kemco would later port a trilogy of Mackintosh adventure games to NES: Shadowgate, Deja Vu, The Uninvited). Patrons received NES Works videos on Ghostbusters, a bad port of a C64 game, and a video on Mickey Mousecapade (the first Capcom published Disney game for NES), Joust & Millipede (two HAL Labs takes on early 1980s arcade games), and Donkey Kong Classics (a cart with the first two Donkey Kong NES games).

    NES Works 91: Ghostbusters

  • This week's public video is about one of the worst computer ports to NES and a game that would make a lot of people's bottom 20 of NES games: Ghostbusters. The original Commodore 64 game is good though. Patrons get a NES Works episode on Mickey Mousecapade, Joust, Millipede, and Donkey Kong Classics, and a NES Works Gaiden episode on the Atari 7800 covering their versions of Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., and Mario Bros with a belated look at Centipede, a 7800 launch title.

NES Works 92: Mickey Mousecapade/Joust/Millipede/Donkey Kong Classics

  • This week's public video is the inauspicious start of Capcom's Disney games with Mickey Mousecapade which was a Hudson game in Japan. Capcom would do much better when 1989 came around. There's also the remaining two of HAL Labs conversations of early 1980s arcade classics (Joust and Millipede), Iwata already surpassed Joust with Balloon Fight for NES, and Millipede is a fun time on any platform. Donkey Kong Classics is a 2-in-1 cart of the first two Donkey Kong games for NES. Patrons get two NES Gaiden videos, one on the Atari 7800 and it's trio of Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr. and Mario Bros with belated look at 7800 launch title Centipede. The other video is a Famicom 1985 with Battle City, a decent arcade port, and Super Mario Brothers, a seminal Famicom game that popularized the platformer.

    NES Works Gaiden 40: Donkey Kong/Donkey Kong Jr/Mario Bros/Centipede

  • This week's public video takes us back on the Atari 7800 track with their Fall 1988 releases of three Nintendo games and these are based on the NES ports: Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr and Mario Brothers. We also get a belated look at 7800 launch title Centipede, which is a really good arcade port. Patrons get two NES Works Gaiden episodes, both Mario related: one is Famicom 1985 which looks at Battle City and Super Mario Brothers, the other is a greatly timed patron request for Super Mario Brothers 2: The Lost Levels which looks at the 1986 FDS release of Super Mario Brothers 2. It looks like patrons get NES Works episode on Super Mario Brothers 2 next week.

    0
NES Works Gaiden 41: Battle City & Super Mario Brothers

  • This week's public video shows what peak performance looked like before the FDS and mapper chips. It's Super Mario Brothers. And also a look at Battle City, an OK arcade port that is a staple of Famiclones everywhere. From this point, there would be the ascension of the platformer on Famicom. Patrons get a double dose of Mario with the Japanese Super Mario Brothers 2 in one episode and an NES Works episode on what North America and Europe got as Super Mario Brothers 2 with a look at Nintendo Power, another American cultural icon. NES Works is finishing 1988 strong, some very good games still to come to finish the year.

NES Works Gaiden Episode 42: Super Mario Brothers 2 The Lost Levels.

  • This week's public video is the second on a Mario themed trilogy. The 1986 FDS release of Super Mario Brothers 2 (which wasn't localized until the SNES as The Lost Levels for Super Mario All-Stars) built on the previous year's Super Mario Brothers. Japan would see the next Mario game Super Mario Brothers 3 in 1988. And what a game that was. Patrons get a pair of NES Works 1988 episodes. One on Super Mario Brothers 2 and the other on Blaster Master. Both got great coverage in Nintendo Power.

NES Works #93: Super Mario Brothers 2 & Nintendo Power.

  • This week's public video looks at two now iconic products of the NES: Super Mario Brothers 2 (Super Mario Brothers USA if you're nasty) and Nintendo Power. Both will have a lasting impact beyond 1988. I still love the cover of that first Nintendo Power. Patrons get a pair of NES Works videos: one on Blaster Master, Sunsoft's first really good game, and another on 1943, a great Capcom shooter, and Bump 'N Jump, an archaic arcade port of a Data East game published by Vic Tokai. Dr. Chaos also looms on the horizon.

    0
    NES Works #94: Blaster Master

  • This week's public video shows us the ascendance of Sunsoft as one of the great NES publishers with Blaster Master, a very good game that had a great remake that improved on the original. I liked Blaster Master back in the day but Blaster Master Zero is the one I'd replay. Patrons get a pair of NES Works videos, one on 1943 and Bump 'N Jump, and the other on Dr. Chaos and Superman, two ambitious games that fall flat on their face.

    0
NES Works #95: 1943: The Battle of Midway and Bump 'N Jump

  • This week's public video (which will close out page 2 of this thread) is on two NES games. Capcom's 1943:The Battle of Midway which was a much better arcade port than 1942. A pretty good schmup although not quite Zanac. Vik Tokai's Bump 'N Jump is a hard game that I personally don't care for but I can see why some would consider it a better game than Spy Hunter. Patrons received a pair of NES Works videos. One on Dr. Chaos and Superman, two ambitious games that just couldn't execute well. The other on Cobra Command and Anticipation, a pair of games with interesting ideas but also fall short (they're better than Dr. Chaos or Superman though). Anticipation was definitely regularly played at my house when I was a kid.

NES Works Episode 96: Dr. Chaos and Superman

  • This week's public video gives us two ambitious failures for the NES. Pony Canyon's Dr. Chaos which tried to do what Konami did with Goonies II but winds up being obtuse and not that good. Kemco's Superman is pure kusoge, but they really did try and failed miserably. Patrons got a pair of NES Works videos, one on Anticipation and Cobra Command, the other on Blades of Steel and Super Team Games. Soon, Patrons will also begin to get patron-exclusive (for a year) videos on the Super Cassette Vision and its games.

NES Works episode 97: Cobra Command and Anticipation

  • This week's public video gives us two more NES games from November 1988. Data East's Cobra Command which could have had the amazingly bad title of "Stiffen Wolf" and the Rare developed, Nintendo published Anticipation which combined Trivial Pursuit and Pictionary. Patrons got videos on more NES games, one episode on the sports titles Blades of Steel and Super Team Games and the other on Paperboy and Skate or Die.

NES Works Episode 98: Blades of Steel and Super Team Games

  • It's Sports Week for this week's public video that has Konami's Blades of Steel, the best ice hockey game for NES and one of the best sports games for NES. And also Super Team Games, a Power Pad game (Family Trainer by Bandai in Japan). Power Pad games were like sweaters from Grandma as Jeremy basically says. Patrons get more NES Works videos, one on Skate or Die and Paperboy, two games that have more commonality than you'd think and for the 100th episode of NES Works: Capcom's Bionic Commando, one of the all time great NES games.

NES Works Episode 99: Skate or Die and Paperboy

  • This week's public video features troubled youth in the form of Konami's port of EA's Skate or Die, a game that I remember liking, and Mindscape debuts on NES Works with Tengen's Paperboy, an arcade port that was also a very successful NES game. I think I rented Paperboy once. Patrons get more NES Works videos, the 100th NES Works episode focused on Bionic Commando, and a video focused on arcade ports Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Rampage.

NES Works Episode 100: Bionic Commando

  • This week's public video is a milestone, it's the 100th NES Works episode and it's about Capcom's Bionic Commando, a great NES game. 10/10, would watch again. Patrons get a NES Works episode on two arcade ports: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and Rampage. Patrons also see that Famicom 1985 continues with the three games that followed Super Mario Brothers: Pooyan, City Connection and Hyper Sports, which are all good games.

NES Works Episode 101: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom & Rampage

  • This week's public video gives us two more arcade ports, neither on the level of Bionic Commando but then few things would be. Mindscape and Tengen give us Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom which to it's credit has replay value and does its job as an arcade port. It is a flawed game but still respectable. Data East gives us a port of Midway's Rampage and well, it's not as good as the Master System or the Lynx version. It's still good mindless fun though. Patrons get a pair of NES Works Gaiden videos, one on post-SMB games that were Pooyan, City Connection and Hyper Sports and the other on October 1985 games Route 16 Turbo and Challenger, both respectable games.

NES Works Gaiden 43: Pooyan, City Connection and Hyper Sports

  • Famicom 1985 reaches the post-SMB games in this week's public video. Hudson and Konami's Pooyan is a good arcade port, the original game being created by someone who'd later make some great Capcom games. Jaleco's City Connection is good enough for the name of the company that handles Jaleco's legacy content these days. Konami's Hyper Sports is the other half of Track & Field and is essentially half of a game. Patrons get more Famicom retrospectives, one on Route 16 Turbo and Challenger, the other on Kinnikuman, Sky Destroyer and Ninja Jajamaru-kun.

NES Works Gaiden 44: Route 16 Turbo and Challenger

  • This week's public video on Famicom 1985 gives us the first somewhat promising Sunsoft game, Route 16 Turbo, which is a good maze chase game. We also see a glimpse of Famicom's future with Challenger, a frustrating action adventure game from Hudson, that would be a influence on the Legend of Zelda. Challenger is not that playable by today's standards but it's good to see Famicom inch away from arcade like games. Patrons get more Famicom 1985 stuff like an episode on Kinnikuman, Sky Destroyer and Ninja Jajamaru-kun and a separate episode on Mach Rider, Onyanko Town, and Pac-Land.

NES Works Gaiden 45: Kinnikuman, Sky Destroyer and Ninja Jajamaru-kun

  • This begins the deluge of mediocre anime games on Famicom with this week's public video. Bandai makes their Famicom debut with Kinnikuman, a mediocre wrestling game based on the anime and manga that sold enough to get a Japan-only sequel game, Taito publishes Sky Destroyer, which has a Japanese pilot taking out American planes in WW2, and Jaleco has Ninja Jajamaru-kun, which would start a franchise of its own (Strictly Limited Games is handling the Western physical release of the Jajamaru-kun collection which is Famicom-heavy). Patrons get more Famicom 1985 with an episode on Mach Rider, Onyanko Town and Pac-Land and another episode on the rather underwhelming bunch that is Pachicom, Burgertime, and Ikki.

NES Works Gaiden 46: Mach Rider, Onyanko Town and Pac-Land

  • This week's public video gives us Nintendo's Mach Rider, a good but not exceptional racer game with a female protagonist, Pony Canyon's Onyanko Town brought to us by Micronics which plays well (it's Heiankyo Alien with cats) but has really bad music, and Namco's Pac-Land which needed a better control scheme. The next two videos that Patrons see early are both Famicom 1985 videos with opposite levels of quality with the uninspiring trio of Pachicom, Burgertime, and Ikki for one, and the historically important and good game Portopia Renzoku Satsujin Jiken on the other.

Also this week, the Patreon exclusive video until 2024, NES Works Epoch episode 1 on Epoch Cassette Vision games Kikori no Yosaku and Baseball premiered.
