StarTopic Final Fantasy VII Rebirth |ST| "Don't fight here... you'll ruin the yellow paint!"

i wish they just made moogle noises instead of actually talking
I thought it was jarring when the sole Moogle in 16 just made the stock noise, but now I see the alternative is far worse. These cutesy things flying around sounding like Chopper create this game's equivalent of the tonal dissonance Kingdom Hearts has whenever you go to the Winnie the Pooh levels.

I can't fucking believe there's a dedicated track for pretty much every single thing in the game, it's insane.

400 tracks is just wild. I did a stupid escort sidequest the other day and it had a dedicated music track that was a bop and I was like.. other games have a dedicated "sidequest song", and this game has a separate track just for this one sidequest.

That's what strikes me about this entire project. They could have just had half the amount of NPC's in the towns, cut one region and not bother with QB at all, and still ring this home. But they went there. For everything. They truly walked the extra mile, and that's just awesome.

BOW WOW WOW, BOW WOW WOW

It was adorable.

And it only took them 4 years since Remake, despite development starting at the beginning of Covid 19. They knew what they were doing with this game and it shows. Probably had a rather smooth production.

I remember thinking back when it was announced that the FFVII remake would be a multi game project "that's just more chances of it being a failure", glad to see I was wrong. Top tier stuff all around.

They did put Remake's soundtrack on Spotify, but given that this one seems to be over twice as big I do wonder if the whole thing will make it to Spotify.

Either way, I pre-ordered the soundtrack halfway through the Grasslands because I knew I needed it ASAP.
worth noting that while the Remake Soundtrack released soon after the game (believe March 29 the Rebirth soundtrack is slated for) - a Soundtrack PLUS released later with additional tracks not on the soundtrack - so I suspect you will get a Soundtrack and then another release later on with additional tracks

This is annoying but not entirely unexpected lol

Junon feels like a big step up from Grasslands so far in terms of the open world. Maybe it's because Chadley isn't interrupting me every 5 seconds (though he still talks way too much)

Also doesn't hurt that the protorelic quest is a lot better. If I never see Beck and his gang again it'll be far too soon

Stopped at the start of chapter 9 tonight.

Haven't had the chance to use Cait Sith yet but I adore him already.

its definitely bigger and more varied and I think its great that they give you a big chunk, then force you onto the story and go... oh yeah there's a bit more still

Not sure if I should shelve the game now and return in a few months with a more thorough and methodical playthrough.
Or just do all cleanup/postgame stuff now. I’m pretty fatigued after the weekend binge, but this is not an easy game world to say goodbye to.

Finally got to Cosmo Canyon 🥹

It’s the part I’ve been most excited to see in part 2.

Hopes it’s good

Chapter 8:

People are raving all over the place about Gold Saucer, and I think the devs knocked it out of the damn park. The vibes, architecture and minigames were all so fun to participate in. Only thing missing is the OG’s arm wrestling.

The date scene was so sweet and I love how the game can actually let you directly influence what is going to happen. I ship Cloud and Aerith pretty hard, so I had legit butterflies in the stomach when that door knock came and I wondered how the bonding system had played out.

Very minor Junon spoilers but I was disappointed how

Rebirth introduced the Highwind for the first time. I liked it in the original where Cloud finishes climbing the tower and he sees the Highwind above him in all its splendor

You know.

Sephiroth doesn’t need to make an appearance every time. Ruins some of the stuff happening. If there’s one I’ve heavily disliked from remake and rebirth, is the amount of time they show him.

I felt Sephiroth was more menacing. I think his walking into the flames scene was better done in the original despite the old ass CGI. Sephiroth was mostly disinterested in Cloud and crew whenever they encountered him unlike in the remakes where he's actively toying with Cloud. I haven't beaten Rebirth yet, no where close, but based on the ending Remake, I can see why the dynamic with Sephiroth and Cloud is different in the remakes but I still prefer his portryal in the OG

How will I handle this OST? I simply cannot listen to 400 tracks. Guess I'll wait for a top 100 list and still feel like I'm missing something. I can't live without the doggo song.

Every time we've had a relationship locked cutscene, Barret's has been the best. Its a shame you need to intentionally be mean to the girls to get them though. I guess that's what Youtube is for.

Anyway, I don't need a PS5 for Spiderman 2 and FF7R 2, they'll come to PC, I don't need it, I don't need it.

Still avoiding reading this thread due to fear of spoilers (I've somehow made it this far!) but I had to post about how rage inducing some of the minigames are. I put an hour+ in each of one involving frogs, one involving soccer, and a shooting gallery one. The soccer one has some of the worst rubberbanding I've seen outside of Mario Kart. Almost lost my mind trying to beat it. Anyone else experiencing this?

Game is incredible otherwise, though.

I don't think it'll be a spoiler to say: good luck in a few chapters...

If the third game has a pull-up equivalent I will lose my mind.

I’m on chapter 12 now

Obviously haven’t beaten it. But, did they really add Cid and Vincent to tag along cause they didn’t get to be in the party with Aerith like the orignal? That’s pretty funny. Tho awkward inclusion for Vincent, which is funny cuase he’s just optional in the orginal.

I completely agree. Didn’t help with the slowness and the button prompts for me

speaking of stuff the orignal did better was Shrina Break in. Remake completely flubbed that one for me. Tho it was expected when Sephiroth was shown so much. There’s a lot of good in these remakes but I feel some parts could’ve been done much better. Personally.

i’m already heavily invested in QB

then they go an add some mysterious backstory.

i just CANNOT with this game. i’ve loved every single minute so far and my only complaint is the moogle voices.

Decided to go back and finish the Junon protorelic quests before moving on to Gongaga and in case anyone else is struggling:

if you change the game difficulty to easy, the ATB bard in Fort Condor fills up super fast and you can almost spam your way to victory. Still took me three tries to beat the last one though.

you could have cid and vincent while aerith was still alive. they even appear in her death scene

Huh. You don’t say, I kept thinking they join afterwards. Well one of them, I never got in my first playthoughs growing up. Didn’t know you could till the internet told me.

Should’ve replayed the original. Now I’m wondering if you could do Wutai before the temple of ancients cause I’ve been expecting it in rebirth. But I don’t want to get spoiled so don’t want to look it up.

oh, and (Cosmo Canyon end spoiler)

I actually loved the dungeon and it was awesome how they went completely Souls on Gi Nattak, though the second phase was a pain.

Bit clueless why the final part of the chapter was included though.

I'd like to see more of this. It's iterative but it expands everything so well.

Other franchises like Pokemon and AC have been giving a bad name to iterative sequals for years now. But FF7 is showing us how amazing it can be when done well.

Will also add that after struggling with this for close to an hour, after changing to Easy, I found victory
using Cloud and Barrett, the default well-rounded loadout, and around midway when I had most of the map available to me I just went all-out and threw everything up front to take down the birds and general with only occasional units to defend when necessary. I think it's really necessary you force your way to the general with time to spare because I can't find a workaround for his Stop spell other than waiting it out and adding more units when possible.

Currently in chapter 11. Will try to finish it this week end, I feel blessed to still haven't been spoiled so far, but I won't push my luck too much, need to see the ending myself soon enough.

I can't fuckiiiiiing wait. Will they do it ? Will they not ?!!!

If they actually kill her like in the original game, the whole fate ghosts thing is a fucking genius plot thread cause it made us all speculate and wonder weither she'll die or not for 4 fucking years lmao.

I got through it fine unit the last fight. Took me like 10 tires before I got lucky. And I say luck because I didn’t know you had different options i used the default one all 4 battles lol.

Tried Hard mode. Yeah. I’m not good enough at this game for that unfortunately

And if you’re at chapter 11

Gears and Gambits is the bane of my existence, I ended up cheesing this and making a unit cost 5 points and spam those summons. It worked incredibly well.

Oh god.
Oh flippin' god.

The second third of chapter 8 almost broke me because of how the game fell into Remake's level of over padding.

You loved being forced to do at least every mini-games (except two) in the first third of the chapter ? Well joke's on you, you're forced to do at least three of them one more time, because some EVIL THUGS kidnapped your friends and are apparently completetly unable to defend themselves (yeah, non wearing armor human are way too much for Tifa, Aerith, Red XIII and Yuffie, if only they wore real bullet proof armors like the Shinra troops...).

Do NOT do the "Find the person telling the truth", you'll lose 500 Gils every time, even if you win. Or do it if you want to lose time for no reason (the right answer is never the same).

Good thing that the final part of chapter 8 was very good (well, when the cameraman isn't trying too hard to show how insane Dyne became)

Hot take:

There isn’t enough yellow paint in some areas
for all the complaining that happened when the demo dropped, it's weird that some areas just don't have yellow paint and kinda suffer for it. Odd!!!

LTTP but finally started and made it through Chapter 1 - or at least I assume that's all of Chapter 1. I need to finish downloading the game so basically hit the point where I actually can't progress, but can do that overnight.

Really good so far. The equivalent section in the OG is obviously iconic but seeing it here in modern glory really does enhance it.

Dyne was a huge disappointment but it’s a shame that I expected them to do that route, Also, I dislike how everyone sorta evil in this game has an evil laugh.

Yeah, about the EVIL LAUGH, I think Heidegger is the worst.

"Gwa ha ha ha ! Gwa ha ha ha ! Gwa ha ha ha !"
You can't keep the goofiness of the character from OG FF VII and then pretend that he is a serious character who consider his soldiers like garbage (just like Scarlet, man FF VII Remake really hammered it with the subtility of Frank Miller when he write women characters in All Star Batman & Robin : "They are evil, be sure to not only show it -good !-, but also tell it (NO ! The rule is : Show, DON'T TELL) at least 9803948 times to make sure players understand that they are bad people). And make them laugh stupidly.

It's handled better (well, so far) in Rebirth (and then Palmer become the comic relief after a dramatic scene, yay... comedy after an insane man just died).

Pacing is everything.

I actually found this part (which I finished last night) really effective. In no small part because of the tonal contrast -- the cut back to Barret kneeling catatonic after the wild boss fight worked wonders for me. I think that's one of the things Final Fantasy as a whole can do really well.

rude’s bald club had me laughing so hard. rude is the best turk.

after finishing chapter 4 my thoughts are simply that this game just keeps getting better and better. if i didn’t need sleep i’d be playing it all night long

I broke down at the end of chapter 8. They laid it on thick, for sure, but it still got to me.

On the chapter 7 right now and my only problem with the game is that you can't change controls in minigames.

Reached under Junon, goddamn this is just excellent.

lmao is Red faking his deep voice? I love this so much

Oh my god. Final Fantasy VII concert!

And it’s an hour away in LA for me!

I knew it 😳😳😳

And the funniest thing is that you can chalk a lot of that up to the team taking more than few cues from the likes of Yakuza/Like A Dragon/RGG and Monster Hunter. Big action-rpgs that (mostly) operate on a quasi-yearly schedule, but are able to keep up thanks to a good deal of asset reuse and being knowledgeable about their own engines.

The answer was always there, and it just took Square Enix a bit to follow suit. But I'm certainly glad they did!

also, i feel like i should flex this cause it took me a while to get it lmfao
