New Season, New Thread! Welcome to the Famiboards 2023 College Football StarTopic! Not only does this thread provide me with another chance to indoctrinate some of Famiboards into the exciting world of college football, but we're also looking at one of the last years of the sport before EVERYTHING CHANGES. Next year we've got Texas and Oklahoma to the SEC, USC and UCLA to the Big Ten, and the Big 12 building a coalition of anyone left out in the cold by realignment. The PAC 12 will quite likely either cease to be or at least take on a dramatically different form. AND THAT'S NOT EVEN GETTING INTO THE GAMES THEMSELVES!

Has Georgia turned the Tides for good and will it continue its recent dominance on the National Stage?
How will the Buckeyes respond to being underdogs to their hated Wolverine rivals after two seasons of humiliating defeats?
With recent coaching changes across the country, will we see new stars born this year?

PAC 12 is going to win the National title in their final year of existence (as we know it at least). Washington will then bring that over to the BIG for 2024

It's all just gonna be the SEC and Big Ten when all this realignment is done, huh?
The Big 12 is doing a pretty decent job of setting itself up as a major player when the dust settles, and I think there’s some legal stuff that’s keeping the ACC together for the time being at least. But yeah, I’d be surprised of 3/4ths of the playoffs aren’t either B1G or SEC teams for the foreseeable future.

I like the part where they said both the Big Ten and SEC were interested in Virginia (and UNC).

As a literal lawyer, I also like the part where I get to read FSU fans act like they understand contract law. There's a whole lot of this, "That's not how any of this works," when reading that.

I guess it’s the flagship for the state, but Virginia does nothing to move the needle for TV contracts/viewership. Certainly less than VT. Understand UNC as an addition just because of the state population. But these media people play the calculations better than I do.

I'm just happy to see the report get mentioned in an ESPN article instead of being relegated to SwimSwam. If either of the conferences do in fact want to add us, and still do once we can get out of the ACC, then everyone that made that decision is objectively smart and attractive.

I'm looking forward to seeing the rennovations at Ross-Ade Stadium. The big one is obviously the new South Endzone stands:

But they are also adding a tunnel to the NE side.

There's a few other things going on, like a new student dining facility and some other minor improvements. Supposedly this is "Phase 1", so I'm looking forward to whatever they have in mind for the future (Speculation is an upper seating tier added to at least the Eastside of the stadium under the lights).

Arizona State seems to be hopping to the Big XII so the Territorial Cup may live on.

For now.

Finally, the University of Illinois can meet its rivals from…uhh…the Pacific Northwest…
Can't wait for Ohio State and Michigan to conveniently get home games against the coastal teams and not have to travel more than once every few years, while Purdue and the rest change time zones every other game.

Edit: Oh God, and just think about how much of a clusterfuck BASKETBALL and all other sports are going to be.

I just realized Rutgers is in the same conference as Washington. Yeesh.

Get ready for Purdue to spend two weeks on the “west coast” tour to play all the teams. Really care about the student part of student athlete obviously.

And those Olympic sports probably get dominated by the new teams with exception of volleyball? I’m not sure what the other BIG sports are besides hockey and lacrosse. The teams here are definitely baseball/softball, volleyball, and track. And of course rowing

Let’s hope we get those great Cal Bears vs Miami Hurricanes league games!

Amazing these networks can pay 30 plus million for all of the Pac-12 teams in separate leagues, but can’t pay that to keep the conference together….

Good old Atlantic Coastal Conference, the perfect place for some California teams!

Funny how the SEC, despite Texas and Oklahoma being the catalyst for the current situation, have mostly managed to at least stay in the South East, making them the most honestly named Power 5 conference.

Mountain West is honestly the perfect conference name. I know it’s not power 5, but it fits the schools so well (also my second favorite conference). Pac will always be my favorite even if it’s dead. Nothing like Pac-12 after dark. Just the most unhinged series of games.

Next season. This will be the last year with 4 teams
Also probably be the year a Pac-12 team gets back in it. By the end of this, Wazzu might be sitting on a golden parachute of playoff shares as the only member of the Pac left.

As bad as I feel for the PAC-12 and its fans, as more news comes out it feels like a lot of this came down to some bad decisions from the school leadership. The Apple deal falling apart this year blindsided many of the schools, but even before that, they had even more lucrative options available that would have kept the Big 12 and Big Ten out of their hair:

The Pac-12 got an offer of $30 million per school from ESPN in the fall of 2022. It included all the conference’s media rights, including the Pac-12 Network. But the conference presidents and chancellors believed they could do much better.
The board instructed Kliavkoff to reject ESPN’s proposal and make a lopsided counter-offer. The commissioner should have pushed back and managed expectations in the room. He should have been more tuned into the eroding media landscape. Kliavkoff followed the order and the consequences were grave.

Source to me: “You know what we told ESPN after their $30 million per-school offer?”

Me: “What?”

Source: “We said we want $50 million per school.”

Me: “What was the ESPN response?”

Source: “Goodbye.”

Like, USC and UCLA seem like they were given an offer they couldn’t refuse, but the PAC still could have survived and been protected. It’s just very disheartening it turned out this way.

Larry Scott started the Pac 12 down the path to destruction over a decade ago, but the current leadership had plenty of chances over the last 12 months to at least stabilize the conference and figure out a long-term plan. Now it is basically dead.

Vaguely off topic, but seeing as NFL pre-season started this week:

1. Is anybody on Fami watching NFL pre-season?

WestEgg's Purdue Hype Post
Alright Famiboards, you know what time it is?

It's time for WestEgg's 2023 PURDUE BOILERMAKERS hype post!

(For best experience reading this post, please precede it with listening to that greatest of college anthems, "Hail Purdue")

38d201a0b332d4e3060fa2616ed16a6b-original.jpg

That's right, Famiboards, coming to you from beautiful West Lafayette, Indiana at historic Ross-Ade Stadium, your Purdue Boilermakers are ready to take the field and defend their status as Champions of the Big Ten West in what is likely to be the division's final year!

What has changed since last year? Just about everything! After helping to revitalize the program for the last 6 years, former Purdue Head Coach Jeff Brohm is returning home to Louisville to coach the Cardinals, and taking with him most of his staff and even some recruits. In a year that's looking like a case of discard and draw for the Boilermakers, the weight of building a successful program to retain the momentum of the last few years falls to new Head Coach Ryan Walters, coming from a successful stint as the Defensive Coordinator of the Illini.

MM-23-681876-CoachWalters-Hero-1920x1080-1-1536x864.jpg

And by all accounts, Coach Walters has hit the ground running, both in recruiting and in building his staff. New Offensive Coordinator Graham Harrell brings the Air Raid offense scheme, fitting Purdue's propensity for bombastic throws while creating enough misdirection to allow new running opportunities as well. On the Defensive side of the ball, Kevin Kane takes over as Defensive Coordinator, looking to build a defense meant to contain the run and confuse the quarterback. It's going to be a tough proving ground for these new coaches and their staff, but it will be exciting to see how they come into their own.

Players to keep an eye on

ZuaQvjfK_400x400.jpg

Hudson Card- QB
Purdue University is the Cradle of Quarterbacksand Texas transfer Hudson Card strikes out on his own to make it big on the field where former quarterbacks Aiden O'Connell, David Blough, Kyle Orton, Drew Brees, and countless others have forged their own futures. Card had limited play time at Texas, but was quite impressive when he took the field following Texas's starting QB's injury, putting up some nice stats (a 70% 75/108 completion rate, 12.38 yards per completion). Card was Coach Walter's key recruiting target, and expectations are high.

e075eb28-a101-4465-9cdf-076ffd1a2053-07-23-19_FootballCover-10.jpg

Devin Mockobee- RB
Mockobee was Purdue's breakout performer of 2022. Purdue's traditional pass heavy play has always left it a little lacking in the running game, but last year, the former walk on surprised and delighted with his quick legs and slippery movement. Now on scholarship, Mockobee will be Purdue's go to guy on the run. Last year, Mockobee ran for 195 carries, average 5 yards per carry, and scoring 9 touchdowns.

FB_YniqWQAweipo.jpg:large

Cam Allen- Safety
In the last year, we've seen a lot of turnover in the defense, which was already hit and miss at the best of times. One consistent bright spot however has been Cam Allen, a defensive leader with 42 starts, 167 tackles, 12 passes defended, and 10 interceptions. Look for this veteran defender to lead a new group of freshman and transfers this year under Coach Walter's revamped defense.

Why should you cheer for Purdue?

1. Trains are cool
Boilermaker_Special_VII.jpg

Trains are wonderful things, and Purdue's official mascot, the Boilermaker Special, embodies the larger than life presence of the Purdue as the NCAA's largest, heaviest, and fastest mascot.

2. Cheering for the Underdog
Underdog_%28animated_TV_series%29.jpg

Purdue is always an unlikely hero. It's rarely the top dog of the Big Ten or even the West division, and despite that, Purdue has a fearsome reputation as a giant killer, with more wins as an unranked team against AP top 5 teams than any other, and it's not even particularly close. Purdue can win (or lose) any given game it plays, and every win is to be cherished because unlike the Georgias, Bamas, Michigans, and Ohio States of the world, nothing is taken for granted.

3. The Purdue All-American Marching Band and the World's Largest Drum*
ncb_g_purdue_ms_1296x729.jpg

Even when the athletics program disappoints, the Purdue All-American Marching Band never does. Accompanied by the famous Big Bass Drum and the golden and silver twirlers, this band is not just the pride of the university, but also of the state of Indiana, being the official band of the Indianapolis 500. They are also the creators of the first marching band field formation, the block P.

*The drum is officially named the Purdue Big Bass Drum. The signature World's Largest Drum comes from a time when it was the largest free standing drum.

4. CHAOS
1200px-Purdue_Pete_modern.jpg

This ties into the Underdog argument, but the Purdue Spoilermakers are the boogeymen, dream smashers, and nightmares of playoff hopefuls in the Big Ten. No one wants to play at Ross-Ade under the lights, for that's when the dark majiks activate and chaos rules the land. If you like seeing the keepers of the world overthrown on occasion by the humble and slept upon, Purdue is your team.

Final Thoughts
Common sense will tell you not to expect too much out of Purdue this year. There's a new staff, new players, and things take time to settle in. And yet, as a life long fan and alumnus of Purdue, I can't help but feel hope springs eternal for my Boilermakers, and when things look to be at their lowest, that's when you have an opportunity for greatness. Maybe Walters doesn't get things together this year, and maybe Purdue falls back to Earth from their recent lofty highs. Or maybe, just maybe, we shoot for the stars as Purdue Alum Neil Armstrong did so long ago.

Until next time, Famiboards

Now imagine living this the last 10 years or so. Just blunder after blunder. And destroyed 100 plus years for some cash. Presidents were the most to blame and then it hurt that almost every school’s athletic departments (and schools in some cases like USC) were mismanaged along the way beside Oregon (they can thank PK).

Didn’t realize Nebraska and Minnesota were playing tonight. Just tuned in and it’s 0-3 and almost halftime. Now that’s B1G West Football!

I’m sure the money will answer my question, but is Nebraska going to the BiG 10 the worst love from a competitive standpoint in college football? They have been absolute garbage since moving over and probably would have had a lot more success in the Big12. At least Rutgers mostly sucked already and TAMU hasn’t done anything, but that isn’t too different from where they were at anyway. Most teams that moved have done equal or better but the Nebraska and Colorado moves have been the biggest disasters (and Colorado went back).

Yeah, Nebraska has oddly been the worst fit of the expansion teams, they don’t even bring the academic standards the rest of the Big 10 has. You’d think being a Midwest traditional powerhouse would have been a natural addition, but somehow the east coast teams have found better niches in the conference. Not sure why Nebraska has struggled so much since the move, seems less small fish in a big pond than fresh water fish in a salt pond.

A lot of fun watching Nebraska-Minnesota last night. College Football is back!

Weird to have a local college team getting national attention. LFG, Coach Prime!
Don’t like the style of remaking the roster, but I guess it’s the way things are nowadays. No way he stays at Colorado if he recruits this way and get the team to play this well.

We are also seeing why Hunter was the number 1 recruit! Might be run into the ground if he plays both ways all season but guy and find the ball on offense and defense.
