Rumour Bandai Namco Studios is developing a 3D action game for a Nintendo contracted project (probably a remaster/remake?)

maybe it's Metroid Prime 2 and 3.

Emily did say that after Retro finished 1, someone could be contracted to follow in their footsteps

To be honest, although prime is technically a 3D action game I figure the first person nature of it would be more prominent to note.

3D action implies 3rd person to me

KID ICARUS COME ON
if they're going the route Retro supposedly is, then there wouldn't be any difference. just get the environments up to par

There’s many excellent possibilities here, but I have to agree with many here that a Kid Icarus Uprising remaster would be the best timeline.

I’m really struggling to think of what this could be if it’s not Kid Icarus: Uprising. Like, sure, I guess it could be Metroid Prime 2 and/or 3 (what exactly has been said about those two also being remastered, by the way?), but I feel like the use of the term “3D backgrounds” is significant here. If it was a game like Metroid Prime, I’d think that they’d call it something like “3D environments” rather than “backgrounds”, right?

I mean, Uprising technically also has "3D environments", considering the land stages and what not.

Bandai Namco returning to Metroid Prime 2 and 3 after being kicked out of the Metroid Prime 4 project seems weird to me but it is a possibility after all.

that 2 and 3 could be farmed out and made to follow how retro did 1 (just revamp the graphics, leave the code alone. think the Zelda remasters)

this might be a translation issue. and depending on who you ask, there could be no difference

We probably shouldn't be ignoring the description of the background art as "deformed" (デフォルメ) in a few of those listings.
  • デフォルメされた世界観の制作が得意な方
  • デフォルメ系3D背景のHDリマスター作業を行っていただきます
  • デフォルメ系背景アセットの作成
In this context the English definition is irrelevant; it'd be referring to a visual style that people here would probably identify as "chibi"; characters shrunken down with the key features emphasised. Probably not Kid Icarus or Metroid in that case; could just be Wind Waker.

They’ve already got a perfectly fine Wind Waker remaster, so I’d be a little confused if that was it.

Nintendo is heavy on porting 3DS/Wii U games and Kid Icarus is probably the game that would benefit the MOST from a port to Switch. It would also push their online subscriptions and it is a really fresh and different IP. Like if they ported Miitopia why not KIU knowing it has a cult following already.

If this happens i will literally cry.

Wind Waker is the easy (and disappointing) potential solution, but I don't actually think it's that. The description would easily fit something like the DS / 3DS Zelda games (Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, A Link Between Worlds or Tri Force Heroes) or any of Skip's games (Chibi-Robo, Giftpia, Captain Rainbow).

Bandai do co-own Chibi-Robo with Nintendo... I wish that were possible.

I don't think we need to be too attached to the word "deformed".
To a Japanese person's intuition, the visuals of most Nintendo games are "deformed".
"Deformed" does not necessarily mean "chibi".
Well, at least it is not a photo-realistic game.

I'll eat my fucking hat if it actually turns out to be Kid Icarus Uprising lmao

I've accustomed myself to believing that Uprising would forever be left on 3DS and that Smash Bros. would remain the Kid Icarus series and characters' final resting place.

Metroid definitely doesn't fit that description no matter how you slice it though; unless it was Federation Force (no chance lol). Prime's visuals would definitely be described as realistic; especially in comparison to your typical Nintendo game. Kid Icarus' backgrounds (not character designs) are realistic looking too, which is why I also crossed it off, but maybe that has a shot.

If it does end up being Kid Icarus, I hope they leave in an option for the touch controls.

It’ll be fun waylaying people online who couldn’t get the hang of them.

It's a remaster, then; this listing makes that clearer than the others.

Didn't we hear that Nintendo were looking for someone to remaster Prime 2 and 3? Those are 3D action games... 🤔

The reason I left those out is cause the Nintendo consider them first person adventure games? I know, it’s just a buzz word but they do love their buzz words.

3D action game? It's finally back!

Perhaps the deformed line means the background is a relatively low resolution compared to HD. It may be why it's mentioned only in the HD remaster posting

Yes, we can definitely rule out Metroid.
I would be grateful if you understand that "deformed" does not necessarily mean "chibi".

Sure, but the position could be just for the flight levels, maybe.

Emily said this? And was this supposed to be inside info or just speculation? Not that it’s likely to be Metroid given the mention of a “deformed” style, anyway.

And yeah, I suppose it’s unclear.

I do understand that, thought I made that clear in saying:

a visual style that people here would probably identify as "chibi"

I didn't say it is chibi; just that people would call the examples used on the page I linked chibi.

Um, you seem angry, so sorry if I am making you feel uncomfortable.

Kid Icarus: Uprising’s backgrounds aren’t completely realistic, though. There’s a lot of fantastical design in them, so I could see that fitting the bill still.

I just went through a list of all of Nintendo’s GameCube, Wii, and 3DS games to see if there was anything I was forgetting about that might be a likely candidate for this, but…honestly, I don’t really see anything else besides Uprising that fits the description of being a “3D action” game (even if you take the term a bit loosely) and a game that Nintendo would be likely to actually bother remastering/remaking for Switch… Not to get my hopes up too much, but…what else could it be?? I don’t think it’d be a Zelda game, and I feel like Grezzo would likely be the ones doing it if it was.

Wasn’t Bandai-Namco the rumored studio originally working on Metroid Prime 4 before Retro took over? It would be so weird if they were remastering 2 & 3. It’s like they were demoted.

Bandai Namco also worked on Smash. Mario Kart 8, Mario Kart Tour, Go Vacation. Pokken Tournament and New Pokemon Snap for Nintendo so, they definitely aren't that weird of a partner for Nintendo. The largest reason they were originally selected for Prime 4 in the first place was the size of their workforce, including their overseas studios

I want to believe in Soul Calibur II HD at long last on Switch, but I guess Kid Icarus would be more likely

Holy shit Chibi-Robo, I wouldn't be upset with that at all though

We probably won't see the game before 2025 and it will be the weirdest game they could have remastered.
