Rumour Xbox First Party going third party/multiplat - Discussing and Summary Thread (UPDATE: 4 Xbox exclusives are coming to Nintendo Switch and PS5)

There's so much competion in that space though. Like we already have a dozen Windows based handheld gaming machines.
What uniqueness is MS actually bringing to the table here.

I think precisely because it is an emerging market they would fare well

A functioning Windows PC handheld while niche wouldn't be a heavy investment for them, and the ability to have an on the go native device with Game Pass is more enticing especially if they plan on converting the model from day 1 releases.

It could probably also support steam. It's low risk but high reward if it catches on. But I love handhelds so I am biased and always will pull for more

And yet Nate has talked twice about a new Banjo Project being in the works:

Era Link 1
Era Link 2

I think the difference between the two of your opinions is that a new banjo game doesn't have to be developed by rare, and even if it was, the staff who were most interested in making that kind of game already took it on themselves to do so, and left the company to make Yooka Laylee. Some rare IP has already been developed by other teams like killer instinct or battle toads, could feasibly happen again.

"wouldn't be a heavy investment for them," is doing a lot of the heavy lifting here, and is a dubious claim at best.
I mean, all they'd have to do is put a gpu and cpu worth something into a Surface.

Microsoft has already made tablet devices to run Windows before.

This was a literal reaction to the announcement of Bayonetta 2 for WiiU.
It was pretty much the most innocuous part of the reaction, too, and kind of humorous to reference.

Another part of the reaction is implicitly referenced whenever somebody rails against Hideki Kamiya's Twitter persona, since thar became what it is following waves of harassment over giving Bayonetta to Nintendo.

So, the first part's okay. Let's hope the. Internet can avoid the second this time, whatever this podcast might bring.

You can trace Microsoft's current failures all the way back to 2013, when they failed to secure Bayonetta 2 for the Xbox One. All of their struggles with the Xbox Series consoles derive from that.

This made me go back to see what some of the reactions were, and yeah, just as bad as I remember. So yeah, hope people can avoid threatening murder and suicide this time around.
This is also iirc the incident that caused Kamiya to adopt his "block everyone"/"I'm not talking to people in English" personality on Twitter (alongside being baited to comment on issues he had no context for).

It turned out for him to be the easiest way to mute out a ton of that kinda crap.

♪ They're the Angry Video Game... NEEEEEEERDS ♪

Absolutely amazing. The forum I posted in back then had so much shit and whining about the Bayo 2 situation that the mods literally set a "You complain about Bayonetta 2 on Wii U, you get banned, no matter what" rule because otherwise having Nintendo-related topics was pretty much impossible.

Pulling out a couple less unhinged portions, and ...
Ronoh said:
I get wanting to have launch titles, but a SEQUEL to a fame that wasn't even released on your old console? What a stupid move.
Brea Harper said:
I'm a diehard Bayonetta fan, and that is just disgusting [...] Literally fuming with absolute disappointment right now. Watching the death of an amazing series.

I have to say, Nintendo is going to look back and thank Ronoh and Brea for their sage wisdom and warnings, sorrowful that they heard it too late, as they release both these games yet a third time packed into a Bayonetta trilogy pack for enhancement on their new hardware, synergized with Bayonetta's continued presence in Smash and an upcoming new game.

Bayonetta is dead! Long live Bayonetta!

I sure hope Burning Hunter got the help they needed
Oh wow. I remember seeing that comment. Yeah, Ace, I hope so too.

It all comes full circle.

And the "we should have bombed you again and finished the job" tweets at him and a whole slew of vile verbiage.

Came back full force with the recent Bayo3 voice actor controversy, too, with people especially gleeful about it and defending it after it was revealed everything was other than had been indicated, because, well, he deserves it anyway.

... so, I guess I don't have high hopes here after all. Who would have figured?

Here is the huge problem: if Microsoft only confirms some titles, that means that Microsoft has a price where they need a bigger install base and more sales to cover development. This promise means it is only a matter of time, and with the right resources, to make a game properly multiplatform.

So, if you were an Xbox gamer, who loved MS exclusives, but were missing out on:
A bigger userbase
Physical Games
Exclusive Games from either Sony or Nintendo
Controller features like Gyro, HD Rumble, and Sony's Triggers

Why wouldn't you trade in your Xbox for PS5 or a Switch 2? Because if enough people who own Xbox's don't buy the game, then the game will go multiplatform. It's not like it's that hard to convince Xbox players to not purchase games, considering that they are literally conditioned to not purchase games. In addition, I really have to imagine that most people who have an Xbox, are gaming enthusiasts with multiple consoles. It would be the easiest thing to wait out a release and get all of the games in a single box of your choice.

The truth is, regardless of what Phill says on Thursday, if multiple exclusives are going to other systems, it's only a matter of time before most if not all exclusives will.
This is very close to the Saturn/Dreamcast timeline that happened.

Been gone for a few days. Took a guys trip to Miami so it made it a lot easier to unplug from the madness. Catching up on the actual news, I'm looking forward to the podcast on Thursday.

For me the big thing is the games. How are they going to explain what the plan is going forward. If they try to make it a "case by case basis" without more concrete details, I don't think that will be a good decision. Is the plan for everything going forward to be ported to PlayStation and Switch 2? If so, a year out? Two years on average? If not, what will go into deciding which games are ported and which ones are not. I totally understand that it won't be a one size fits all, and they will have to probably leave a little wiggle room, but this is most likely going to be a huge seismic shift in the industry.

GamePass is the next big one. I have no idea if any new rumors have popped up in the last several days, but I'm curious to see if there will be any changes to their current strategy. Also, some more insight as to what is taking so long for the Acti/Bliz games to come out would be nice.

Hardware is probably the least interesting topic for me. I do not expect Microsoft to kill the Xbox hardware line before the next generation of systems, unless the brand completely dies in the next ~24 months. There will be another round of Xbox hardware, and I'm predicting that the top brass will say as much on Thursday.

Most games.will be timed exclusives on Xbox , with case by case being full exclusives

Is the best messaging they can do in that case. But i suspect to maximize revenue some games will be multiplat day and date and that makes their messaging difficult

Here's a curious possible direction that I realized after reading Doc's blog (linked below) about why he thinks Microsoft isn't killing Xbox: what if they plan on "SteamOSing" Xbox, where they still make Xbox consoles but the Xbox OS will be something they sell separately. Doc basically posits that because Microsoft is a software company, not a hardware company (unlike Sony, who is a hardware company), this would be a pretty "safe" direction for them to diversify the ailing Xbox brand.

I already mentioned before that technically all Microsoft would need to do to enter the portable console market is stuff a decent gpu/cpu into a Surface, and that speculation kinda seems in line with that.

Technically speaking, Xbox runs a highly modified version of Windows already, actually releasing it as something customers can buy/install (or even modify an existing Windows installation to? 🤔 Not sure how divergent the Xbox OS is) wouldn't be too much of a stretch.

Sony is

Sony is honestly not that much of a hardware company anymore.
They have phones that sell mid, hifi is a niche market compared to back then. TVs? Yeah sure, behind big sellers like Samsung and Lg. (Great, never the less)

Cameras is still a good driver. And ps is fine.
What they do a lot is media (music, TV, games), and expert services (technical side of the movie industry for example). They are a mixed company.

Microsoft is in and out of hardware, the problem with them is that none of their approaches is a winner. Tune, windows phone, arm tablets, surface phone. Their accessories do fine, and Xbox I guess. The surface line is established, but kinda lost in drive since the pandemic. Hololense? Not existent outside of industry applications. They are severely missing some big wins, but also usually forget to progress when reaching a high and leaving it to others to take over.

Well; today's the day. In light of the Sea of Thieves tweets, do you think we'll get any 'games being ported' announcements at this podcast?

What time is this podcast thingy being aired?

E: 3PM EST/Noon Pacific today on Official Xbox Podcast

just a fancy way of saying they're not coming
I mean, Sea of Thieves is an online only game, there's no benefit in having the game native on Switch. No internet connection, no play.

I think Hi-Fi Rush is a native game, done by an external studio and arriving Switch later. Since the cloud versions are basically the PC versions I don't think we could have an exclusive t-shirt design that way.

The Xbox One version of Hi-Fi Rush was cancelled because the devs thought it sucked way too bad to release so I'm not sure how a Switch version would go.

As I said, last gen version was done by the devs themselves. Switch version should be done by a capable port studio, such as Virtuos. First rumor said Tango no longer was working on the Switch version so that explains it. They have given it to someone else.

The t-shirt indicates there IS a Switch version is coming, either native or xCloud. We'll see.

Podcast is less than Ian hour away now.
A new war front will open in this very thread.
Direct & switch 2 prediction thread has seen enough bloodshed for one day.

We’re 15 minutes away from potentially learning that Sea of Thieves will be coming to Nintendo and Sony… making it the first ever Rare game to release on PlayStation hardware!

When the podcast drops, can someone plz listen at super speed and then summarize what's going on in this thread! Thank you!
