StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (New Staff Post, Please read)

Respectfully disagree. People are not paid to do this technically, so it is their right to not say when they have something, or to check with their sources after they have heard something. Here it adds credence to a statement (switch2 reveal/announcement in March) which otherwise would have been taken relatively less seriously.
They also have to maintain relationships and not expose anyone, which we random joes do not see nor imagine the difficulty.
Even then, it is okay to piggyback (although not sure it applies in this case) off something that was said before, for as long as we know the person is not trying to deceive or lie about what they know. Hell we know the few people here who have inside contacts, the imposters on youtube don't bother coming here, because the ones posting here are just the best, so let's not insult them plz.
Thank you kindly.

So how we only have 2 insiders saying it’s March reveal/announcemnet? You would think the bigger publications would have reported on this as well using their own sources.
Mid to late next week should have more insiders claiming March reveal I’m hoping

At this point I'm half-convinced the jaggies are an artistic decision, so you're probably right.
I believe it is an artistic choice, but for specific reasons.
Good, clean AA can be expensive (MSAA), or it can add noticeable blur and other artifacts (FXAA, TAA, FSR).
I think Nintendo generally chooses to maintain a crystal-clear image quality even if there are jaggies present, which I can understand.
Obviously, there are newer technologies out now for AA that are both clean and generally lack significant artifacting and blur. We'll likely see this with Switch 2.

I'm very patient.
Reading this and looking at your Profile pic, made me giggle a bit.

As for me, I am an impatient person, but that was already since last year. I can't wait, knowing it prolly be revealed next month. Luckily, I planned out some weekends with friends, to get some distraction, and do I dare say at the end of next week we had a Partner Direct behind us, and we are by then over the half of february and closer to march!

I like the Joy-Con "D-pad" buttons
I think I agree, in terms of their shape, at least. I kinda wish they weren't so hard and clicky though.

Happy New Year to people who celebrate new year today!

And… mass production will start after the new year holiday, which align with the March reveal date.

Yeah. I sincerely hope they do make some major improvements to the OS though.
I think you mean the GUI, and honestly, it does what it needs to.

Only think I'd do is add in some built-in Mii support and improve the eShop speed, but that's more of a web side thing. There's some some technical explanation for the slowness, I think it's them avoiding some class of exploits by dealing with javascript in a slower manner or something.

I also wouldn't say no to optional music. I really liked the Wii and Wii U shop music.

I've had this vibe too but I understand the doubt. I'm going forward with a May prediction despite how silly it sounds. Furukawa's statements about wanting a shorter timeframe between reveal and launch is hard to interpret too. Personally, everyone being so certain that the console will reveal in Fall because "that's when it always happens" screams for a perfect opportunity for Nintendo to surprise and delight with a summer release.

I figured it might be fun to list my thoughts on why it could be great to launch in Summer :
  1. Most Americans get their tax returns late April/Early may as most of them file last minute.
  2. Kids are out of school and parents frequently look for ways to keep them busy.
  3. September/October have been so packed with major releases recently that the meme has become how packed those months are.
  4. PS5 Pro is rumored to be releasing this Christmas.
YEESSSS!! I remember being broke as hell in college but I used my tax return to pick up my Switch and BOTW at launch.

i think within the first 12-18 months, Switch 2 OLED Pro rumors will begin, so it's not as out there as you think.
tbh, could actually see a Switch 2 Pro instead of just an OLED model. If DLSS advances the way it does, I could see the simple addition of Tensor cores being an upgrade enough with some QOL stuff sprinkled in.

I desire a UI that does more than it needs to. Just shy of doing too much. Give me a UI with a theme. Hit me with a Wii Menu.
That's a difficult line to define. You may end up with slow everything because of Miiverse.

Wii U failed for many reasons, but it was unattractive to me because the OS was slow as hell at everything. Keep it simple and fast.

A simple launcher is best. Put the complication in programs that are launched by it.

EDIT: 3DS menu is about as complex as I'd want, and even then, I spent too much time messing around with folders. Theming was nice though.

If I am not mistaken, the 2 former nintendo employees said in their podcast that the next console would become nintendo's focus from March, which adds to all this I guess

Is it true the new rumor is no joycons and an actual d-pad?

I don't see that happening. No Joy cons would mean you can't play the thing docked unless they throw a Pro controller in the box. Only if they do something wild with it like wireless docking (where you can play off your TV even holding the console in your hands) do I see that happening, but even then they'd also be sacrificing all the play configurations Switch has like the ability to do 2P with one console.

There's definitely something to be said for a pragmatic approach. The thing for me is that there's some part of me that's genuinely somewhat displeased when I boot up the Switch at this point, because its UI is so... bleh. No music. Devoid of personality. Not even responsive enough to justify itself. It just doesn't suit Nintendo very well to me at all.

There's something especially unfortunate about a console I can unlock with clown noises, but then it's just flat grey as far as the eye can see.

The Switch OS UI is simple for a reason; its meant to take up as little memory as possible. Compare to the Wii U which took up half of its 2GB of RAM and as far as I know there was no way for retail software to free it up (unlike the 3DS)

This is a good thing, menu music doesn't really work on a modern console. It's more of a nuisance than anything; I don't know why PlayStation still does it. It also doesn't really fit in with the Switch's "always on"-style, most owners are leaving their Switch in sleep mode, it would be very jarring and weird for the system to start playing menu music every time you wake it up.

Maybe I'm in the minority but I never found the menus from previous Nintendo consoles to be too slow. They were good enough for me and I appreciated them for being fun and interesting. It's nice that the Switch menus are fast and efficient but holy crap they look so sterile and boring to me. I would appreciate a good balance of functionality and creativity for the new Switch at the very least. Nintendo has that image of family fun and excitement but the UI and menus don't really show that.

Yeah they mentioned that recently but they also said they do not like to exploit their industry ties for leaks so it must be educated guesses on their part.

I think the option would be nice. Having a default theme with options for music on the main screen has and always will be a nice feature. Have it be a part of NSO for the games you bought, that'd be neat.

I don't hate the music, but I think it needs to be a toggle if it's there at all. Also, I have to compare to smartphones a bit, and it would be annoying as hell if my Pixel 7 was playing music every time I was in the home screen.

As far as I'm aware, the source of these joycon "rumours" are John Linnemann not liking joycons and therefore joycons will be gone from Switch 2 because John doesn't like them.

I like John Linnemann's work btw. But folks shouldn't fret about this.
I’m re-listening to the podcast and Nate is the one who brought it up as part of his predictions: “I also think the system is going to forgo joy-cons… similar to the SteamDeck or a Rog Ally”.

Would it? I feel that isn't the case at all when the music is sufficiently ambient. Like, yeah, you can't exactly blare the Wii Shop Channel theme at me on wake, but the actual Wii Menu theme? Perfectly fine in my book.

Not to mention if you're waking to the root menu, it's basically indistinguishable from a (much faster) typical console startup, as you're not taking advantage of the always-on nature of the console when you just turn it on with no game suspended.

Honestly I would take something similar to what the Xbox One and Series menus are like. There is no music as far as I'm aware but it doesn't look lifeless and has customization options to make it look more how you want it.

After Switch 2 Nintendo will focus on a Lite/Mini/Slim type cheaper model before they do a Pro or OLED type more expensive model.

Mark my words.

Plus that’s basically what they always do.

Removing Joy-Cons from the Switch is ultimately just outright redundant, I feel. Folks who don't want removable controllers would, presumably, be the exact target demographic for a Lite console. Why take that feature away from the main console when you already have an existing archetype for it? And if you don't feel the market overlaps sufficiently... I dunno, make the Lite dockable?
