Sales Data Updated sales numbers for Switch titles: Super Mario Bros. Wonder (11.96M), Super Mario RPG (3.14M), and more

11.96 Marillion units...you love to see it!!

Great sales for Super Mario RPG as well, and Mario Kart 8 continues to be the game that can't stop selling!

Wow breath of the Wild almost sold as much as TEars of the kingdom last quarter.
And its niot even cheaper

Lol remake of a 25+ year old snes game is almost about to outsell it’s modern equivelant in less than 3 months

Does it? It seems within the range as the other sales. I think what will determine this is if whatever PM sequel is and the sales of it increases or decreases.

Honestly, if PM drops the RPG battles completely and goes full adventure (which ironically would be a decent replacement for classic 2D/early 3D Zelda), I think it would be just as lauded if it went full RPG. Like, humor and storywise, TOK got it down. It's the hybrid gameplay that tends to be the hot topic.
Yeah, I liked TOK a lot, but the battle system felt like it didn't fit in with the game. It would probably be better if it was a pure adventure game

Glad to see Mario RPGs continue to thrive. Doubt it will outsell Bowser's Inside Story (it sure won't outsell Kingdom Battle), but it's only been what, like 4 months? Pretty good, but I wouldn't exactly be surprised if it doesn't get another sales update next quarter.
It is guaranteed to get another update as it sold over 1 million in this FY. and the next report is still the same FY.

I agree with this. Boss battle system was great. Normal combat was not so much. I think the paper games should go in the pure adventure/light platforming realm since they have the story, settings, and music down for these. Plus the paper stuff does so much for the ability to do story sequences and puzzles.

Agreed. TOK was amazing. Dungeons felt like old school Zelda. Shangri-Spa was an incredibly memorable area. But yeah the battle system for normal battles was bad

I forgot it’s not the end of the fiscal year yet so we can still updated numbers for other games like Kirby in the next one.

Spreadsheet updated as usual; and once again no longer can embed :(

Nice legs on Pikmin 4; and Mario RPG opening strong too.
Jesus, Mario Kart 8 at 60 million. I just realized that if you combined MK with the WII U version, it's hit 70 Million!

... and it sold more than 3.5 million this quarter. It could surpass Wii Sports!

Also 3.33 sales for Pikmin 4, definitely the best selling Pikmin now, let's see it get 4.44.
For some reason it was a really huge hit in Japan according to the regional breakdown - it sold more in Japan than overseas

Luigi's Mansion 3 hitting just shy of 14m and I bet that should a fourth game come round for the next Switch people will still underestimate the series.

Not gonna lie, I was hoping for a bit more for Pikmin 4 (more out of hope than expectation) but it's safely the best selling game in the series now and over 3m for that genre is very impressive. Not a mass-market breakout but definitely more visible than before.

No WarioWare: Move It! and Detective Pikachu Returns probably means both of them sold less than 1 million. Would hazard a 500k or so guess for them.

Impressive numbers all throughout, though! Especially Super Mario RPG, I sure was proven wrong there.

WarioWare probably somewhat buried launching in the middle of two Mario titles at a busy time of year, but Get It Together also didn't break 1 million in its initial sales report but did go on to do so before too long. Perhaps it's a price point issue, or perhaps it's a timing issue (or both), but WarioWare isn't seeing any sort of gains the way other series have. Certainly it's not been able to recapture the Wii/DS era popularity.

Smash Ultimate's sales are still mindboggling to me honestly. Smash has always been one of Nintendo's best sellers but Ultimate just launched it into the stratosphere. It's in the top 10 best selling Nintendo games of all time now. It might be my most played video game of all time though so I certainly can't complain.

there was so much dooming about wonder underperforming lol
There's still some people claiming this is an underperformance, but it's out of touch with reality. It's a very strong holiday result.

Absolutely amazing charts and summary, thanks so much pierre!

It makes me really happy how virtually all of Nintendos iPs are healthier than ever (while also delivering some of the best entries in their respective series).
A much deserved success both critically and commercially and here's hoping this will put Nintendo on the right track for their next system :D

So very happy for SMRPG, I hope it is able to reach 4M+! Hopefully TTYD is able to sell well too so Nintendo must continue traditional Mario RPGs next gen.

One issue for both Wonder and Tears of the Kingdom is how Nintendo continue to sell them in the years ahead. In theory, they both have a shot at performing strongly if Nintendo make it easy to buy and play Switch 1 games on Switch 2 (which I'm assuming they will). It's highly likely neither open world Zelda or 2D Mario will have a 'replacement' marquee title on Switch 2 at an early stage, whereas other evergreens - like 3D Mario and Mario Kart - are pretty likely to have their latest brand new title launch early on in Switch 2's life. Tears and Wonder could therefore benefit from new hardware by being that system's initial open world Zelda and 2D Mario title, depending on how Nintendo position them (especially I'm thinking - how easy will Nintendo make it to buy Switch 1 games on the next system's eShop?).

Both Zelda and 2D Mario have performed very strongly this year, but neither title is likely to enjoy years of strong sales on their host hardware simply because Switch is now winding down. Recent precedent for hardware transitions suggests Switch sales will drop sharply once the successor is out, which might further 'limit' the performance of Wonder and Tears (I say 'limit' in the sense that, currently, neither title is likely to shift more than 30 million copies). Smash hits for sure, though; Tears is going to hit 25 million even if it doesn't get a Switch 2 version - but I wonder what Nintendo might do beyond 'enhanced' versions to try and power them along as early next gen evergreens.

It speaks to the bananas software sales on Switch that Skyward Sword HD outsold the original by over 0,5 million even tough the original was basically the only big release that year on Wii.

I'd be very surprised if TotK isn't one of their "You can play this now in 4k*" titles for the Switch 2. Unless they just completely downplay that aspect.

I don’t think that they’ll see totk’s tailing off as much of a disappointment- it’s more of an indication of how anticipated it was rather than people being less interested in it now

Very happy with the start Super Mario RPG is off to!

Mario Wonder isn’t a heavy hitter, btw :p

SMRPG Numbers making me hopeful we may be finally getting a sequel! Or at least I hope it's paving the way along with TTYD for a continuation of Mario RPG games as a whole.

I know it's Technically been remastered already, even tho I think it looks less appealing than the original, but now I kinda would love to see a Superstar Saga remake in full cell shaded 3D or something like that.

i’ve seen enough, Nintendo should retire the paper mario series and start making new super Mario rpg games, it’s just the better series and it sell more, we don’t need paper Mario.
Other than that mario kart 8 will probably outsell wii sports in the end, kind of insane, my beloved super mario 3d world + bowser fury is now the second best selling 3d mario game so all is well in the world.
Scarlet and violet is en route to outsell sword and shield but sadly not red and blue,
Also can someone find the can pikmin 4 become the best selling entry in the franchise thread? I need to do my victory lap, it’s going to hit 4mil easily in the future and it makes me extremely happy, it only makes sense that the best pikmin game is also the one that sold the most.
Zelda still monstrous even with weak legs and with it and super mario party we’re now at 9 20+ mil seller on the switch, bonkers numbers all around

I feel like Paper Mario TTYD will sell more than Origami King, but not reach Super Mario RPG. I think SMRPG has a broader appeal because of play Peach and Bowser. Yes, they're playable in TTYD as well, but not on the same level of RPG

But it's very good to know that SMRPG has received lots of love and support!

Wow that’s hella impressive for Mario RPG. And of course, an awesome number for Mario Wonder.

Years of the Kingdom is weird. It was clearly over shipped in its 1st quarter and is just now catching up. Plus, most of the demand was clearly upfront, so overall legs are weaker. But it doesn’t really matter? It’s still an absolute beast. Cool to see BotW continue to sell, too.

And Pikmin has strong legs! Hell yeah. Keep going, little guys!

I knew Wonder would be doing well, but I'm glad it managed to even edge out a bit NSMBWii's numbers. Also glad to see 3D World's re-release continue selling as it frankly is a game that deserved to be seen beyond the barrier of the Wii U. Pikmin's numbers are a delight to see too since that was something I enjoyed immensely and made me regret neglecting getting into the series for so long.

Pokemon's astronomically strong Switch numbers continue to amuse me as I realize that despite all of the internet infighting there will be a huge chunk of kids that grew up on these as their "dear nostalgic pokemon that is totally the franchise peak" astroturfing social media.
