Now I really want the hookshot to come back because being able to Spiderman your way between enemies and falling objects and shit in freefall would be rad as hell
I'm still of the mind that a game could be developed with hookshots and the maneuverability afforded by them in mind. Pulled off well, it would be incredibly satisfying.

I'm more excited about the mid-air maneuverability, however. 🏹👀

The bow falling thing looks to be extremely dynamic on the other hand, allowing you to aim in all different directions complete with different animations/poses and camera orientations. Should be really neat!
The Sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild appears to follow in the freefall of its predecessor, which struck me with the open air concept as being built around concepts that almost seem invented for Kid Icarus.

I still can't get over how completely coherent, unique and evocative the Zelda team's art direction is for BotW and this. Just the shot here with Link falling down, which doesn't have a whole lot going on per se, is so perfectly composed. Not a graphic artist so it's hard for me to give words to it - it just looks wholly unique and evocative, but also elegant and polished. chefs_kiss.gif
I love a good art style and art direction.

So cool how they solved the other half of verticality with this "falling upward" mechanic. BotW's lategame could just as well have been called The Legend of Revali's Gale - quick upward vertical traversal is essential combined with the parasail. This new concept (and I wouldn't be surprised if a hookshot would make it in - DUAL HOOKSHOTS NINTENDO) will make the locomotion in the game even more expressive. And the life of the level designers even harder xD

Remnant From the Ashes just been rated for Switch
Holy crap that person from reddit was right!

I believe it was a thread about Destroy All Humans Switch version, some insiders said THQ games like DAH2, Darksiders III, Wreckfest, Wreckfest sequel, MX vs ATV new game, Remnant, Spellforce III, Gothic collection (?), Spongebob sequel and Tak HD Trilogy will be released for Switch. So far they were spot on.

Afaik Chronos was ok performance wise, hovering around ~35fps. Hopefully they lock it on Remnant. Also to note, this seems to still be handled by Perfect World so I guess they own the IP.

Gonna throw this out there but it's become an obvious trend that less established publishers have been more willing to port their games to Switch regardless of technical ambition.

It's the return of the Ultra 64 Dream Team that I might or might not have predicted!

Ugh am I gonna have to make the thread then?
I’d suggest not doing it if your heart isn’t in it, but so far nobody else appears to have gone for it…

Maybe chaos will reign closer to the end of the month and a clear path will emerge?

Oh I meant the BOTW2 patent thread.

I'm totally doing ST4. And I'm kinda into it now.

Somehow feels like nobody is though. We just learned about a major new gameplay mechanic (aerial acrobatics/shooting) and I feel like nobody is talking about it.
Yeah i was kind of talking about the people here but I agree with you. Twitter should be ablaze with this new info but there's not really anything.

I really enjoyed your thread breakdown you posted of the patent.

The freefall shot, and this shot here:

just absolutely blow me away. I honestly don't even need more previews. Give me the damn game already, based on those two shots alone.

This shot gave me goosebumps. It's prettier than everything you can see in BOTW. There's no more this strange fog-filter, here the colors are popping.

The Zelda team really keeps upping their game in every respect. One of the most talented studios in all of gaming.

Real talk: People wonder why the game takes so long despite being in the "same" Hyrule and it's because of the amount of work it takes to implement new mechanics like those, and get them right.

Not to mention this "same Hyrule" clearly isn't the same Hyrule since it's got a whole sky zone now. And probably an underground zone.

And also it's because Nintendo hate us; or they're lazy; or they're complacent; or all of the above.

And I have to say (not meaning to elicit groans, I promise) I wonder how much MonolithSoft had to do with the terrain design this time. That was the aspect of XB1 that hooked me, XBX probably still has my favorite terrain design of the series (if not in the whole of gaming), and we know they helped a ton with BotW's Hyrule and are helping here, as well. But how much of this is them this time, I wonder? Is this gorgeousness peak Monolith?

Well there is another place talking about it, but they seem to think that Nintendo now owns the concept of falling and rewinding time in video games.

I wonder if you push Hyrule Castle back down to the ground using the same, but much more powerful, ability that allows you to move smaller objects back through time (obviously this would be endgame).

That would explain the title-revealing-too-much thing Nintendo said.

Well, while they don't yet own any of this (none of them are granted) they still shouldn't have ownership of these concepts regardless of specificity of each. Software patents go against the very spirit of patents themselves, they shouldn't be a thing.

Nice to see Senran Kagura x Neptunia on Switch too

Good news, but who knows how long it'll take for the west to get this.

In any case, I'll probably just grab it on PS4 lol

Could be quick given the ESRB rating (which actually accidentally leaked the Switch version). Must be another May release. 😛

I agree that patent law is a mess for various reasons, but it's just annoying to see people confidently proclaiming something they clearly have no idea about.

The original purpose of patents was to encourage inventors to explicitly share how their invention works. Back in the day (i.e. the 1700s) there were a lot of breakthroughs in mechanical and chemical engineering which helped drive innovation all over the place, but a lot of people who made such breakthroughs would sell their product but not tell anyone how it worked. People could reverse engineer certain products but not everything.

This is called a trade secret, and it's a type of IP that still exists. The formula for Coca-cola for instance is a trade secret IP, not a patent or trademark or copyright.

Then patents came along, with the guarantee that you'd see the sole benefits of your product/invention for the next 20 years if you publicly disclose all of the details about how it works. Then, after 20 years were up other people could sell that too. But because you've disclosed your invention, other inventors and companies can start utilizing techniques or compounds or whatnot that you disclosed in your invention in their own research, and in doing so come up with even newer breakthroughs and inventions.

This is the purpose of patents, to get all of these scientific breakthroughs into public documents so anyone who wants to can read about them and come up with their own ideas that iterate or improve upon them. That's innovation and scientific progress.

Software patents are a different story though. Software patents don't tell you how a function is programmed. There's no discussion of actual individual lines of code or anything to that effect, the wording in software patents is usually along the lines of "a non-transitory computer readable medium with instructions that cause the function of X" where X is something like, "play minigames during a loading screen".

There's no actual disclosure about how a new breakthrough is done. Anyone who sees a game with a minigame during a loading screen would instantly know all of the information provided in the patent. The patent itself does nothing to help foster innovation. If the process of adding that minigame were simply a trade secret that wasn't patented it would make no difference, anybody who knows how to program could do the same thing.

That's the problem with software patents, they do not foster innovation because they do not provide any details about any invention that you wouldn't know just by looking at the product itself. They run directly contrary to the spirit and original purpose of patents.
I agree that patent law is a mess for various reasons, but it's just annoying to see people confidently proclaiming something they clearly have no idea about.
You're not wrong there.

Nintendo must be real proud of their big new mechanic in BotW2 if they're trying to own the rights 🤔
Or maybe because their patent on the D-pad has run out they're doing anything they can to chase that rush.

They've patented game mechanics before (see Eternal Darkness sanity system) but I can't think of a time where they've tried to patent a whole bunch of mechanics at once. Might just be due to the new leadership.

@Skittzo your name makes me think of Skitty every time I see it. It took me far too long to recognize its phonetic wordplay.

@MisterSpo vindicated once again with the Pokemon: Legends Arceus tweets. You hate to see it, but you're right - Directs are dead.
Indie directs don't count, and neither do E3 Directs, Mini Directs, January Directs, September Directs, or regular Directs of any type. Purchase is necessary. Void where prohibited. Only those 18 or over may enter. May cause internal bleeding.
