StarTopic Anime |ST| Is Captain Falcon more anime than Fire Emblem?

I think my main issue is really just the split nature of the storytelling
Interesting. I personally love it when perspectives jump around in storytelling, like I'm being given puzzle pieces to slowly put together.

I've had a while to stew on it, and my impression of that whole debacle remains negative. I don't think it was resolved well.

I started reading Spy x Family a few days ago and am already on chapter 31. Really enjoying it, it’s very charming.
It's such a feel-good story!

Anyway, I might cook up a top 10 anime for 2023. Hmm.

I think Famiboards isn't weeb enough, and also that it might be fun to do a quick and dirty top 10 for 2023 anime. The caveat being that it has to have finished airing in 2023, so unfortunately I will be leaving Apothecary Diaries, Undead Unluck and Frieren: Journey's End out of this list. In no particular order, the anime I liked the most this year are:
  • Vinland Saga S2- We followed Thorfinn through his bloodstained youth and this season is all about his older self struggling with the skeletons in his closet. Highly engrossing character study.
  • Heavenly Delusion - Something to watch when you want to go "WTF is going on" every 10 minutes
  • Summertime Rendering - Imagine a horror movie except the characters are competent and willing to fight the monsters tooth and nail, and the tension is from how unwinnable the situation seems to be.
  • Pluto - If you haven't heard of Naoki Urusawa, this will serve as a solid introduction to his body of work, which are all masterpiece level.
  • Oshi no Ko - Raw look at the entertainment industry, don't be fooled by the bright colors.
  • Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean - It's Jojo. What else is there to say?
  • Birdie Wing - About golf, but not just ordinary golf. We're talking EXTREME golf played in underground mafia betting matches.
  • Loving Yamada at Lv999 - Classic shojo-manga love story enhanced by excellent directing. Akane is such a huge dork and I adore her.
  • Undead Girl Murder Farce - A detective solves mysteries involving the supernatural. One could say she has a good head on her displaced shoulders. Yes, the detective is a disembodied talking head.
  • The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You - Hilarious parody of romantic comedies that's stuffed full with shitposts, but somehow still has genuinely endearing characters.

I think a top 10 for me would look something like this, although I'll include Frieren and Apothecary Diaries since they were 2 of my absolute favorites of the year and I feel like enough has aired that I feel comfortable including them. I guess I'll order it but it's not an order I've spent much time thinking about.

  1. Frieren
  2. Oshi no Ko
  3. The Apothecary Diaries
  4. DanMachi s4
  5. The Dangers in My Heart
  6. 100 Girlfriends
  7. Pluto
  8. The Eminence in Shadow
  9. Zom 100
  10. Tomo-chan is a Girl

I was gonna type stuff about each of them but honestly most of them I've made posts about in this thread so it felt like typing for the sake of typing, so I'll just talk about a few of them. Biggest surprise of the year for me was DanMachi. I think the series has generally been pretty entertaining though nothing special but the second half of this 4th season was actually really intense. I thought it did what it set out to do extremely well. Tomo-chan is a Girl is one I just watched, and it's a lot of fun. Honestly the biggest strength to me is the supporting characters. A lot of these types of shows have either annoying or forgettable "friend characters" but I think Misuzu and Carol do a great job in the role. I thought Carol was going to annoy the shit out of me when she was first introduced but I found her weirdly funny. Also bonus points for Jun's petty retaliations to their petty trolling, which always got a laugh out of me.

There's still some stuff from this year I want to get around to. My big blind spots are anime that had continuations this year, so stuff like Jujutsu Kaisen, Spy x Family, Demon Slayer, Vinland Saga, Golden Kamuy, and whatever else. This year was sorta me getting back into anime after a pretty long hiatus, so I'm behind on a lot of these types of shows. But overall I watched more anime in 2023 than I've watched in any year since probably 2016 and I thought it was a great year. There's already a ton of stuff I want to watch coming in the next two seasons as well so I'm expecting to keep into it going forward too.

I didn't watch much anime until this fall so I can only really do a top 5 of shows I've seen enough of to judge based upon their anime

1) Frieren
2) Oshi No Ko
3) Apothecary Diaries
4) The 100 GFs
5) Ruroni Kenshin 2023

And yes I already know about #5, there's a reason I'm not sharing my thoughts about it. Show's only top 5 due to lack of stuff I've watched this year.

I still need to watch Pluto, Shangri La Frontier, Heavenly Delusion, Castlevania Nocturne, and Ancient Magus Bride.

I've read the manga but haven't seen enough of the anime to appropriately rank Spy x Family S2, Hell's Paradise, Undead Unluck, or Jujutsu Kaisen S2.

As a rec, do give older series like say, key the metal idol a go.

I didn’t watch a lot of anime this year sadly and I missed the Fall season almost entirely as I’m trying to finally finish Dragon Quest Dai (24 episodes left), but I can do a top five.

1: Scott Pilgrim Takes Off - This was fantastic! I really loved getting a new story and seeing all of the characters again. The humor was great and the new songs were excellent. Would be cool if we get a follow up of some kind, but yeah I walked away very satisfied. Easily my favorite show this year.

2: Gundam The Witch From Mercury - I was hoping for a longer show, but what we got here was largely awesome and I loved the characters. I really hope we see more of them in the future. I’ll always have immense fondness for Gundam Wing as my first Gundam where I do care about it more, but Witch From Mercury is in many ways my new favorite.

3: Redacted (Winter Season)

4: Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha Detonation Blu Ray - I was really happy to finally see the second movie in this series thanks to Discotek’s Blu Ray release after it missed theaters. It’s mostly all action all the time, but there was enough interesting back story to work with. Also the ending was intense and wild!

5: Dr Stone Season 3 Part 1 - This was a lot of fun! There’s a great cast of characters to follow and seeing them overcome problems with science is always entertaining. When I finally start catching up with the Fall season shows, Part 2 will probably be my first considering the cliffhanger Part 1 ended on.

In no particular order:
  • Bocchi the Rock (technically a 2022 show but only watched it in 2023)
    • Rarely I finish a show and think to myself "Wow, I'm actually mad I didn't watch this earlier", Bocchi was one of them. All the "She's just like me fr, fr"-hyperbole aside, a lot of it was genuinely relateable. But it's also just really well crafted, you could feel the love for the source material in pretty much every episode.
  • Odd Taxi (yeah, another one for the late to the party list)
    • Odd Taxi was the other show that made me genuinely mad I didn't watch it earlier. But also happy I didn't have any spoilers happen to me, so I was able to enjoy it blind. Fantastic mystery anime, actually managing to tie up all of its plot threads really neatly. Still haven't watched the movie but it's on my list.
  • Trigun Stampede
    • Orange once again proving they're the best when it comes to CG-anime. I only have spotty memories of watching the original, so no idea how it compares. Was a wild ride and I hope we get more of it.
  • JuJutsu Kaisen Season 2
    • Peak Shounen. Second season of a show I didn't really care about at the start of s1 that then made me excited enough to check out the manga after I couldn't watch for a week. Now if only Mappa (and like 99% of the industry) could treat their employees like actual human beings, that'd be great.
  • Hell's Paradise
    • Didn't quite make as big a splash as JJK but I still thought it was pretty great. Loved the creepy creature designs and I have a weakness for that "band of misfits need to work together to survive"-stuff
  • Zom 100
    • Plagued by production issues throughout its run, but I really enjoyed the art direction and generally positive vibes of the show, which is a rarity for the genre. Having to wait a couple of months for the final three episodes was worth it.
  • MASHLE: Magic & Muscle
    • What if Saitama went to a school for the magically gifted? It's dumb. But in a very endearing kind of way. It's a huge shitpost and I can't help but love the show for it.
  • Gundam: The Witch from Mercury
    • Never been super into Gundam but this show just blew me away. I kinda agree with xghost that I wish we'd have gotten more but what we got was great, loved its cast, loved the mobile suits, the soundtrack, the direction, just a damn great show all around. (Also Bamco execs are cowards)
  • Scott Pilgrim takes off!
    • Wasn't super into the direction they took with this show but I respect the author for wanting to do something new instead of re-adapting the same story people already know. Definitely a great looking and sounding show, getting Science Saru to do this was an inspired choice, was also great to have the movie cast reprise their roles.
  • Spy X Family S2
    • While it wasn't as good as the first season, probably due to the source material, it's still my absolute comfort show of this year. Watching the Forgers week after week just gave me a warm fuzzy feeling. Looking forward to the movie.

Biggest surprise of the year for me was DanMachi
DanMachi surprised me too. Ryuu's tragic backstory coupled with the highly dangerous Lower Floors made me feel genuinely tense. Like going from a mindless-grind type of JRPG to something like Etrian Odyssey, if that makes sense? I remember the author always wanted to write a fantasy epic before editors meddled, and I think season 4 is him trying to go for that feel again.

I still need to watch Pluto, Shangri La Frontier, Heavenly Delusion, Castlevania Nocturne, and Ancient Magus Bride
Try to make time for them, all are great!

I’m trying to finally finish Dragon Quest Dai
Don't worry about other anime, go and finish that first! It's a classic.

You're gonna love part 2 of Dr. Stone when you get to it!

Bocchi the Rock
These two are among the best of 2022 and I glad you managed to pick them up.

The rebootmake of Spice and Wolf is slated to air in April this year!

So I'm aware of Spice and Wolf but have never read/seen it. Is this reboot meant to be something like FMA Brothethood or Ruroni Kenshin 2023? Looking at wikipedia it seems the original LN series is still ongoing meanwhile the 2 anime seasons happened in the late 00's.

It's something like that, yes. The problem with the original anime is that they skipped some stuff from the LN that turned out to be pretty important for the ongoing plot later down the line, which is likely why they're doing a completely new adaptation isntead of just another season. Though I think the original director is returning and the japanese VAs for the two main characters, Horo and Lawrence, are both reprising their roles :D

I assume Crunchy/Funi will do a simuldub so that's how I'll watch it, but I know the og anime was praised so that's a good sign.

Netflix price hikes makes me want to cancel and yet they're getting an awful lot of good anime pickups lately. Delicious in Dungeon will be there starting tomorrow, then we've had Pluto, My Happy Marriage, and Ōoku last year. All of which are in the amazing 9 or 10/10 range for me.

I feel like Netflix has not only stepped up their game in terms of anime but als in terms of animation in general over the last year. Which sometimes hurts the shows unfortunately, because releasing everything at once is sometimes not great, especially for stuff like JoJo's and probably DiD. Nonetheless it's definitely preventing me from cancelling currently :D

Tiger mask W 2-3
Haruna is intense XD maybe moreso than our lead at times. Black python was all flash no sizzle. Mandatory flashback episode. Was curious and looked it up, using an anime original character as the mentor and a alter ego inheritor as the initial villain is a cool pull

First episode of Dungeon Meshi is out, it is now your legal obligation to watch it.

The english dub is in good hand:

Delicious In Dungeon 1

I thought this was dumb in the manga, and the anime doesn't really help. The only thing the anime improves is having ProZD voice one of the main characters, which is always a positive. Like OPM I find the joke got old by the end of the first episode, and the slow speed chase of "save my sister before she gets digested" isn't compelling.

Dungeon Meshi is already fantastic. I will lap up anything that has to do with learning about monsters and the ecosystem they live in. And also important, the grub looks tasty too. Plus this anime serves as a reminder that I still need to play Baldur's Gate 3 lol

I thought Dungeon Meshi was a lot of fun, although personally I don't know if I will become tired of the constant infodump of the ecosystem lore, which I get is the point of the show nonetheless. So we will see, but the first episode was well paced and the gags were funny.

I agree, first episode of Dungeon Meshi was a lot of fun. Kinda felt like they're throwing me into the deep end there with speedrunning the exposition and then already going back into the dungeon. I really like the idea of treating a dungeon as its own ecosystem though. My main question is, given this is TRIGGER... how do they manage to go to space?

Also, because the internet won't shut up about it, I started Frieren. I'm now 4 episodes in and I like it a lot, actually! Digging the slowburn and sorta melancholic vibe of it, sort of reminds me of my first time playing Breath of the Wild, even though this is not a post-apocalyptic setting (as far as I'm aware). The dynamic between Frieren and Fern is really interesting and I like how the two sort of learn from each other, so to speak, even if it's subconsciously. I'm expecting this to make me ugly cry sooner or later 👀

I’m still chipping away at Dragon Quest Dai and I’m happy I hit another milestone by finishing episode 80. Was excited to see Hym come back for one more fight and Hyunckel’s big fight against the King and his army was ridiculous in a great way. Only 20 episodes left to go!

Mashle Magic And Muscles 1-6

Pretty great adaptation of the manga. The anime moves at a pretty nice clip too. Also the ED is went far harder then it needed to, a dance about creampuffs is appropriate.

Mashle's ED is one of my favourites of the season

Frieren Episode 17

Sein will be missed, he brought a fantastic dynamic to the party and was also speaking out what basically all the audience was thinking
I really liked seeing Frieren and Stark get an adventure together for once, it's nice to break up the usual pairings from time to time. Also poor Himmel, man could probably charm the Demon Lord into submission but his charisma was no match for the world's densest elf woman. As an aside, big fan of how this anime shows the "mundane" side of magic in everyday life. Flying and demon-destroying lasers is great and all but stuff like removing really mean oil stains or mold? That's fantastic!

No one's talked about Solo Leveling yet? The anime of the season?
I know a lot of manwha fans didn't like the pacing but for an anime introduction I felt it was perfect. Excited for more.

Dunbine 1-9(disk 1)
You can definitely see a lot of concepts being messed with here that got refined to be used in Zeta Gundam. Todd is an ass of a rival who makes Jerid look good. Sho's a touch dense in an endearing way, and as always the higher powers just try to throw away problems rather than deal with them. Love how organic the mech designs feel too. Super unique for that era

Super Tank 1
Fun enough, gotta love when your critical passive is misunderstood and you can't activate your ultimate XD

Dunbine 1-9
Yoooo you watched Aura Battler Dunbine! You get extra cookies for that.

No one's talked about Solo Leveling yet? The anime of the season?
I'm going to be catching up on anime today, I've only watched Dungeon Meshi, Ishura and A Sign of Affection so far.

also speaking out what basically all the audience was thinking
How much will the relationship progress stall without our wingman priest lol

I mean I have the new revive HG coming in this week, needed to at least watch a bit(and decide if I’m ordering the HG Virunvee)

Chained Soldier's premise sounds like my kind of guilty pleasure trash... but the anime is so fugly I dunno if I can put myself through it. Might just pick up the manga.

First episode of Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic was a lot of fun, and the adaptation looks to be solid. The manga's enjoyable so it's nice to see. It's funny (maybe sad) how refreshing it is to get a show like this and for everyone involved to be mostly good people with fun personalities lol.

Mashle Magic & Muscles 7-12

The battles with Magia Lupus were all very well done. Ending s1 on the 1-2 punch of Cell War's introduction and everyone finding out Mash has no magic was a good ending spot. Looking forward to seeing s2 when the dub starts.

So after reading all of the 100 Girlfriends fan translated, all the official released English volumes, watching the anime subbed, and watching the anime dubbed, my desire for more poly relationships isn't satisfied. Like a true addict I'm looking for anything to give me a similar hit.

Girlfriend, Girlfriend 1

This really should be called "Brain Cell, Brain Cell", because the harem collectively only share one. This is also kind of an awkward start since we don't really know why Saki likes Naoya outside of "childhood friends", nor why Nagisa loves Naoya and seemingly spent half a year training herself to be the perfect wife. I do find it interesting how both this and 100 gf go out of their way to have the male mc basically say "no sex till marriage" to justify the lack of sex between the growing cast or horny teens in a relationship together. Overall it was a decent enough first episode, will keep watching to feed my addiction.

Solo Leveling Episode 1

Was this meant to be longer than 20 minutes? This felt like the first half of an introductory episode where it ends right at the point where it actually gets interesting? Not a lot to go off here, feels like a more violent (and possibly less horny) SAO :D

Mashle Magic & Muscle S2 E1

Opening will hopefully grow on me, very different from the first one. Otherwise, they waste zero time to pick up where they left off. Really enjoyed the "party" stuff and Mash dealing with the magic ministry people. Looking forward to more!
The greatest strength of the show remains that it makes me go "Watch out, he's gonna do something stupid" but also in the same moment "...and I can't wait to see it!".

Undead Unluck 13

This show just keeps on getting better and better. Each episode makes me go "damn, can't wait where this goes". The flashback of Tatiana was really sad. Poor girl just wants to live a normal life. The parallells to Fuuko are pretty apparent but she's got it arguably much worse :/ Lowkey one of the best shows I've seen in a while.

I'm proud of you, young padawan

Been a while since I read the webtoon, but yeah we haven't adapted the entirety of the beginning yet

Been a while since I read the webtoon, but yeah we haven't adapted the entirety of the beginning yet
Just kinda weird because there's been more and more shows starting with an overlong first episode and this one felt like it just ends :D

Hell yeah, more Dorohedoro! Now that the directors is finally free from Attack on Titan, he's allowed to make more of it

Current season watchlist. Cut 2 shows that didn’t get picked up. Third can hang in for now. There’s one other Show I’m considering but it’s not officially on the list
cachedImage.png

Girlfriend, Girlfriend 2-4

This might be too dumb. All the shows problems feel contrived, and they'd be solved within 30 seconds if the characters just talked to each other like normal people. I don't get what any of the girls see in Naoya, who's only been shown to be loud, impulsive, and stupid.

I'm shook, holy shit!

Wonder what studio is making this though, no mention of Mappa...
I wouldn't be surprised if it's still Mappa. The director in charge of the first season, Yuichiro Hayashi, was caught up in Attack on Titan until recently, so the timing of announcement kinda makes sense? Although Mappa certainly has enough on their plates already 👀

The most important part is that whoever ends up making this manages to get Know Name to do 6 different ending songs + opening like season 1.

I won't settle for anything less 😤

Just watched the first episode of Laid-Back Camp here before I go to sleep. What a cozy little show. It‘s almost like anime post10, without the culvert camps, ha.
