I’m looking for some good turn based rpgs games to play. I’m looking at persona 4, Yakuza like a dragon and some older final fantasy’s, but what are some good ones on switch would any of y’all recommend?
Some of my favourites on Switch-

Octopath Traveller II
Dragon Quest XI
The Alliance Alive
SMTV
Monster Hunter Stories 2

If you want something that’s relatively simple and short, closer to 25 hours than 50+, then Rise of the Third Power is really good.

If some of these are on sale, I’ll pick them up. I saved a ton for this Black Friday

Surprisingly Atelier Resleriana is actually coming to the west, was expecting something like Blue Reflection Sun never leaving japan

I don't have game pass so I couldn't say.
I checked and it wasn't there

I did buy octopath 2 and tactics ogre. Persona 4 is on sale on switch and I rather play it on there than my Xbox

I got Nier Automata for a better day. With them being on sale on the eShop, I may buy baldur's gate 1 and 2 and live a live

Resumed my earlier playthrough of P4 Golden, and I'm really not sure how I feel about it

I don't really like the characters, the story is fine but glacially paced, the dialogue options really need to give me the option not to sound like an utter creep sometimes, and the dungeon crawling just kinda makes me wish I was playing an SMT instead

All that said, the overall small town vibes are great and the soundtrack is a banger (even if some songs are a bit overused) so I still somehow feel engaged enough to continue? It's weird

For me, Persona 4's cast is a very mixed bag. There's some I really, really don't like (Teddie and Yosuke, looking at you) but then the game also contains Nanako and Naoto, so I guess it balances out? And yeah the dungeon crawling really didn't do it for me, I found it so much worse than actually crafted dungeons in 5. I think for most people, Persona 4 is more of a 'small town, chill vibes, friends hangout slice-of-life' kinda game and that's where a lot of the enjoyment comes from since the plot and so much else is really slow and back-burnered for much of the game. So if that's more the kind of vibe and style/setting that you like, it'll hit a lot harder.

Way late to the party on this, but yeah, Shin Megami Tensei V is devilishly good. I was craving that satisfaction of slowly building up your resources, recruiting and fusing demons, and hitting those weak points for extra turns. Shout out to @9-Volt for the tip, the drops and EXP from the Mitama are juicy.

SMTV rules - especially from a combat mechanics and demon fusion perspective it's the best in the series. I think the overall plot/characters and some things like how they incorporated dungeons in the new-style of large explorable world could use some work, but those are less important then the things they really nailed IMO. I'm really looking forward to what they do with this style of game next, whether that's some kind of SMTV alt-game like Apocalypse was for 4 or if it's just straight-up SMT6.

Yeah the SMT loop is so freakin' addicting. V also has some really fun exploration and level design too which is one hell of a cherry on top

Man I want a new SMT. At least DQM is coming out soon, that's pretty close in a lot of ways

Agree with all of this. I’m really enthusiastic to see what they do next, I had a great time with SMTV

Question for the thread, what other RPGs would you like to see revisited / remade like Super Mario RPG Switch specifically where they remix the combat with new mechanics? If you haven’t played it yet, some of the things added were perfect guard, free party switching mid battle, reserve team swap on death (there’s a choice for doing it individually when a dead character’s turn comes up that I don’t believe I’ve seen in other games before as well), splash damage for perfectly timed hits, buffs for chaining timed moves/blocks, triple moves, an actual legit Yoshi level up game, a revamped item system, and elite enemies. It’s a very interesting experience as a result as it stands as a true remix of the original game with various pros and cons before heading into exciting new territory with the new super bosses that add new mechanics entirely. Personally, I prefer the original version of Mario RPG, but this was a much more exciting rerelease than I expected as a result.

A few that came to mind for me were Chrono Trigger (I’m down to try new things here), Final Fantasy VIII (the combat and systems are already complex and have timed hits), and the first Xenoblade Chronicles (I wonder if you could incorporate ideas from 3 like elite enemies, more action elements, etc.).

I'm in for any remixing as long as it's well though out. My favourites are of course the Dragon Quest games so I guess I'll say those. One of the options I'd like for XII's combat is actually Mario RPG style action commands. Not sure how you would implement them into the older games without seeming unnecessary tho. Getting team attacks in there would be super fun, especially in DQ IV and V imo

If we take DQ III HD-2D as an example simple stuff like fast forward options would be great. New wacky jobs are also always a win in my book. As a bonus I think any newly released game with random encounters, including ports, should have a Bravely Default style encounter slider.

Yeah I’m really curious how Dragon Quest XII will turn out. XI is the first one I finished and I enjoyed it a lot. I’m down for more of the same or incorporating action commands which is a system I really enjoy.

I always appreciate fast forward in RPGs especially if enough of the combat is straightforward enough that basic attacks can win normal battles. Also yeah new jobs in a job system game are always cool.

The Bravely Default encounter slider really warps how you play that game, but I’m still surprised more games didn’t opt to add one given how flexible and well loved it is. For people more interested in the story it’s nice to be able to skip over certain areas.

My hope is an approach similar to 7R, i.e. reimagine what is already there in a more modern way or just action commands because they are fun lol.

One of the main reasons I was ultimately a little disappointed with Octopath is the slider not being there. Walking around the world with the beautiful music uninterrupted would have been great. Strange how not even Team Asano used this again. It's also the number 1 thing I want from IIIHD2D but I have little hope regarding that now.

I'd be okay with action timed commands in DQ12, as long as it's still purely turn-based. Going to actual action combat is a big nope for me, at least for Dragon Quest of all games.

I forget which thread I said it in but Sea of Stars really opened me up to how CT's battle system can be improved upon while still remaining true. The ability to hotswap characters was great and encouraged me to experiment with characters a lot more than I tended to in CT (where I'd sorta just use a set party all the time) and the elemental Break system was a great way to incentivise swapping characters and using dual and triple techs. I think those two things and the addition of timed hits to do crits could go a long way to giving a little modern complexity to the game while still allowing it to feel right.

But then it'd just be CT with SoS's battle system so 😅

That’s great to hear. The demon fusion does feel like it’s already bursting with possibilities even early on, which encourages me to play around with the systems.

I’m having way more fun searching for those Miman than I would have expected lol

I'd like to see 7th Dragon remade with the battle system and presentation tuned to be more like 7th Dragon 2020.

Also, the DS Digimon Story games would benefit from a remake that brought their gameplay up to par with Hacker's Memory.

Some less "big name" recs:
  • Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition
  • Bug Fables
  • Chained Echoes
  • Etrian Odyssey Origins
  • Sea of Stars

Seconding this recommendation

@Legion it's really good
Sea of stars should be on game pass and I was interested in bug fables before. I’ll definitely look into the rest of those, thanks.

So, from Black Friday sales I bought:
Persona 3, 4 and 5
Octopath 2
Tactics ogre
Nier automata
Live a live
Baldur’s gate 1 and 2
I should be good on the rpg front for a while

Yes. VFD still has one of the coolest battle systems/presentations/abilities and classes out there. I do hope Sega doesnt sleep on it for us numerous fans lol.

The DS games had one of the more interesting stories in the series. An actual society of human/digimon with teams and all was really fun.

My first thought after beating Mario RPG yesterday was how much I would love an EarthBound remake done in a similar vein.
I'm not quite sure exactly what I would want implemented into the EarthBound battle system but a flashy special move wouldn't be too bad, heck they could even borrow Ness's final smash from Ultimate for it.

I got Tales of Symphonia on the cyber sale and man that opening is so nostalgic. Has that early 2000s vibe that I loved while watching anime like Inuyasha at 5 am on a school day.

I did not play it at launch (I was like 8 lol), and I only got home console from older family members years later, so I played it like when the Wii was out. I played the first hour or so and still has that charm, I don't mind some of the choices made by Namco but I agree that for a franchise like this, the very least they could do is treat it right.

I still hate that bamco (and other japanese publishers) era where they went "nah, lets not put the japanese song, lets put just a generic track in the opening".

While not all localized openings were hits, Symphonia's one is far from generic, like how it incorporates the main title theme in the melody and it ends up feeling like a proper Tales of track, wish they would give the option for all the openings and not just the japanese GC and PS2 ones, since that is one of those times where I vastly prefer the orchestral track.

I'm regularly tempted by Symphonia's remaster, but the text box issues stop me every time. I loved the original for its writing (scenes like the blood test at Sybak are fascinating in what they imply for the game's themes) so not expanding the text boxes to accommodate the longer localized script is like the ultimate deal-breaker.

I am in chapter 11 of FFVIIR, and I like the Game besides the obvious filler. I am glad that rebirth is more open as I am growing tired of these metallic hallway dungeons, lol. The combat is fun tho and the dialogue despite being very cheesy at times is fun

I resumed Paper Mario after beating Super Mario RPG, and it took a few minutes to remember button placements and attack timing. I was pretty far along a month or two ago, but I set it aside because things were busy for a bit.

Anyways, I just got the sixth star, so I'm hoping to power through it before I have to go back to work. It feels like a nice preview for the Thousand Year Door remaster next year!

I’m back playing Sea of Stars again after a hiatus, and had some interesting developments! Just did the castle on Mesa Island. It’s interesting to me just how much more interesting the plot is in this section of the game - previously I wasn’t that into it for most of the game, honestly. And there still isn’t a lot of plot, exactly, but there’s a lot more potential than there was before! I kind of feel like the game took a little too long to get this far, but I’m looking forward to seeing things through now and getting some answers at least for some questions.

I do feel like all of Mesa Island is a big “you should have played the Messenger” bit, as there were lots of little (and not so little) things that stuck out as probably being references to something I didn’t know about. But I can still learn it later!

Shin Megami Tensei V really got its hooks into me. When I have a spot of free time I just go and farm some items from the vending machine, beat some demons for Macca, talk to some demons for fuse fodder, it’s a glorious gameplay loop. I was almost disappointed when they made my character attend school though thankfully that didn’t last long.

I was so glad that section was really short

Such a fantastic game despite the lack of a story and character development. I got all the endings on Switch and never tire of the music. Keep wanting to replay but waiting for either a port or enhanced edition.

Yeah, I thought SMTIV was a much more rounded and interesting setup. But what I love about SMTV is how polished it is. It’s 80% combat and 20% exploration of these beautiful post-apocalyptic areas, to get the monsters to turn into a perfect team for the next boss. You rarely even need to slow down as you can slide all over the place and dash from rooftop to rooftop, it’s really smooth. All to an awesome soundtrack. Sometimes it’s nice to play a game where you don’t need to remember too much, but yeah, they could have done a lot more with the main character. I mean, it’s not like they haven’t done the ‘you start off as a super-powerful demi-fiend and need to investigate the what, who and why’ before.

never tire of the music
The music is great! Even the standard battle tubes got me tapping.

to get the monsters to turn into a perfect team for the next boss
It’s so satisfying when a boss rolls you… then you return to that fight with more knowledge of their weaknesses and their attack patterns plus a team designed to teach them the meaning of the word “hell” and they can barely lift a finger lol

Too much to say that would get into spoilers because of how tacked on some of the "important" characters are. It was one of those 10k Euro on music, 10k on visuals, 10k on character designs, 20k on level design and bosses, 10k on voice acting and 50 Euro on story and characters meme.

Also loved the demons on the field rather than random encounters. Nothing came close to how cool the moment was when this plays -

I am at the end of chapter 17 I think on FF7R... The end is near, pretty cool Game, although I am torn between thinking if a lot of the new parts are worth It or not.. maybe It depends on how they keep building them in the sequels

100%ed Mario RPG in around 14 hours. Game was charming and fun but probably on the lower tier of where I'd put Mario RPGs. Can give it some passes for being the first though. It was fun to see Mario with a more "playful" personality. Kind of wish I kept playing the original when I was a kid but even then I had played all the other Mario RPGs available at that time so it probably wouldn't have stuck with me too much, but at least I'd have the nostalgia bonus.

I'd be there immediately for if they're cooking up any sequel or new Mario RPG though.

Now I started SO2, and right away, gotta praise those visuals. They're stunning, especially after having played Divine Force (my first SO) early this year and finding it to look like an Xbox 360 game in a charming kind of way. But this game is just gorgeous.

Still pretty early on so still waiting for battles to get more fleshed out and stuff. I liked Divine Force for the most part but it's looking like I'm gonna enjoy this more.

I am in Act 3 of Vesperia and these dungeons in Act 3 are good in terms of maneuvering. I will say that the game is starting to feel long in the tooth, but man the mechanical stuff they give you is a lot. I haven't really tried some other characters, I might do that a little as I try to blitz to the end. I will say I wish there were more for Estellise to do.
I think how they handle you missing her in the second Act was well done but it feels like her being back is a little less impactful for her than it should be.
But that might be because where she is now relates to Rita's tech explanation which is starting to glaze over me.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Finally got to the Fairy Village after cleaning out all the optional bosses I could. I honestly want to buy those EXP DLC so I can level up and be allowed to fuse myself a Thunderbird, but I'll be patient I guess. Cironnup is a darling anyway. Also: I love the dampeners. Nothing as satisfying as predicting the opponent and no-selling their Magatsuhi-boosted attacks. MMMMM.

Switch RPGs peaked here for me. Of course many fantastic games came after but it's nuts that when I think of "best Switch RPG" my mind goes to this game from the console's first year.
Yeah XC2 still hasn't been surpassed in my eyes, such an awesome game

Also it's kinda wild than in the 6 years since, Monolith has put out one full Xenoblade, a remake with some new content, and two expansions that are basically just full (of shorter) games on their own

Managed to get through both Super Mario RPG and Persona 5 Tactica this month

Super Mario RPG was an excellent remake of one of my favourite Mario RPGs and it was great revisiting it. I have minor gripes with how silent the characters are, definitely could've used a few wahoo's or something during the cutscenes for my personal taste but aside from that, no complaints. Just a wonderfully redone adventure and a great reminder of how creative the Mario universe can be with it's characters.

Persona 5 Tactica is unfortunately going to go under the radar for most. I will say that despite being burned out on the Phantom Thieves myself, Atlus managed to pull together a wonderful tactics game blending in mainline Persona mechanics to a Mario + Rabbids style of tactical battles to create a pretty cool tactical battle system.
The story is also really good with the focus being on newcomers Toshiro and Erina with the Phantom Thieves feeling more like a supporting cast which definitely helped mitigate my burnout feelings. Toshiro might be my favourite Persona spin off character so far, I really love his story and found a lot of elements personally relatable.
The game does unfortunately run out of steam towards the end with some repetitive maps and stuff and I haven't touched the Repaint Your Heart dlc yet but I enjoyed the main game enough to say it's definitely worth checking out if you're on the fence about it and think you would enjoy a tactics based game.

With those two out the way, it's back to Cold Steel 1 for me (working my way through Chapter 2 but I've rambled enough for now so I'll drop some updated feelings on that another time)
