Very good news that we end up with more DLC characters than expected :)

But hopefully when they revealed full Wave 6 lineup, Wii Rainbow Road appears.

They are perfect!

Funky with his board, Pauline with the sparkly dress from Odyssey... feels so strange to finally have not one, but two mains pop up in a game a decade later.

Fun fact: Nintendo has yet to give these two icons an amiibo

WTF Nintendo? This is the future President and Vice President of the Metro Kingdom we're talking about here, get it together!

The problem with combining the Mario and Peach alts to make room is that that would free up four spaces, not just two. So either they’re combining only Tanooki Mario and Cat Peach while leaving Metal/Gold Mario and Pink Gold Peach separate or vice versa, or they’re combining the Villagers and Inklings instead…or doing something differently entirely, like I proposed with moving the Mii icon out and combining Peachette with Toadette. Though, yes, it would be kinda weird for Peachette to be combined with Toadette when other alts aren’t… So yeah, I really have no idea what they’re actually going to do. 🤷

Also, it’s interesting to see both Pauline and Peachette keeping their dresses instead of getting new biker outfits like Peach, Daisy, and Rosalina… This is the first time characters have kept long dresses in a Mario Kart game with bikes, and I really wonder how that’s gonna work. Of course they don’t show either of them riding bikes in the trailer so we’re just left to wonder for now…lol.

EDIT: Wait, apparently Peach, Daisy, and Rosalina do keep their dresses when using a kart in MK8? Somehow I completely forgot that, lol. So I guess there’s still the possibility that Pauline and Peachette may have biker outfits, but if they do it’s weird that they wouldn’t have shown that off here…

Catching up - so Wii Daisy Circuit was the result of the tossup we thought was between Mushroom City/Bridge right? Not replacing Wii RR?

Also, love the character selection. More than I thought possible!

Yep, Wii Daisy Circuit was one of the commonly speculated tracks to have replaced GCN Mushroom Bridge (one of the two GCN tracks originally planned for Wave 6).

So now we’re looking at

  • Tour Madrid Drive
  • Tour Rome Avanti
  • Piranha Plant Cove
  • Piranha Plant Pipeline
  • Wii Daisy Circuit
  • Wii Rainbow Road
  • GCN ????? (Most likely DK Mountain)
  • SNES ???? (most likely BC3)

as the final 8 right?

Yup, no real suspense with the last two either. Slim outside shot that BC3 is swapped out, but I don’t think that’s terribly likely.

I guess I’ll have some fun and try and predict the order

Acorn Cup
  • Tour Rome Avanti
  • Wii Daisy Circuit
  • GCN DK Mountain
  • Piranha Plant Cove

Spiny Cup
  • Tour Madrid Drive
  • Piranha Plant Pipeline
  • SNES Bowser Castle 3
  • Wii Rainbow Road
I think it’ll be two retro, one tour, one “new” per cup. And the Wiis won’t be together.

I think they’ll go for a cute traditional Bowser Castle to Rainbow Road to end the whole thing.

Sums up my thoughts pretty well. Doubt they put Madrid and Daisy Circuit in the same cup due to theme overlap, and that helps split things up pretty nicely.

Pipeline could maybe swap with BC3, but that’s really the only spot I think is somewhat debatable.

So, I haven't seen this topic or was online when the Direct was over. But Diddy, Funky and Pauline are cool. Peachette was... well... something disappointed in my eyes. But the inclusion of Pauline and Peachette did raise a question for me. We all were expecting 2 last characters, but ended up with 4. Where are Pauline and Peachette fit in the roster? Are more characters coming? Because, all alternative costumes and skins aside, Tour has somewhat 7 characters left, which are King Bob-omb, Nabbit, Chargin Chuck, Hammer Bro, Monty Mole, Poochy and Dixie Kong. And from those characters, why would Nintendo choose Peachette above any character that doesn't look like another Peach clone?

Peachette being included as the 8th character means the BCP adds an equal number of male and female characters

Honestly I think they'll just stick two of the characters next to Birdo and Petey, I doubt they're gonna do anything too crazy to the CSS

they're not collapsing any characters unto others for the css. since mk8dx will have 50 characters by the end of the dlc they'll just rearrange the roster into a 5 by 10 grid or a 10 by 5 grid

Peachette also makes a lot of sense as one of the few newcomers who was in Tour from the beginning, plus she’s the only Tour newcomer that can be given to you for free at the start of the game, and I think she even has more unique more clips than other drivers or something like that, so it doesn’t surprise me to see her picked for MK8D over other Tour newcomers besides Pauline and Kamek. I wouldn’t have expected her if we were really only getting two more characters, but since we got a bonus two, I’m not surprised that she’s one of them.

wait dear god, what the hell is peachette biker dress going to look like

I would not be as unhappy iwht peachette if they made her her own canon character and not toadette tbh. her desing isnt that bad even though i still think nabbit would have been a better inclusions, hes bassically a lock for 10 though.

Ahem ... cough inhales

PAUUUUUUULIIIIINE!

Thanks for your attention, proceed with your day and have a nice weekend.

Diddy, Funky, AND Pauline was a scenario I was hoping for when the new characters got announced and I thought was unlikely after the last characters. Incredibly glad to see they all did indeed finally make it over. Peachette is super strange, but she's also just icing on the cake of those three. And when combined with the previous 4 additions, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe finally feels really good character wise.

...even if I was secretly hoping they were going to go wild and just add the rest of the Tour additions when Pauline and Peachette came in quick succession after the sort of acknowledging pause of Diddy and Funky lol. For a second I thought we were gonna get Dixie, Poochy, King Bob-Omb, et. al. as well.

But still ecstatic with the characters we got. Hope the others show up early for Mario Kart 10 or whatever the next one is.

the final character list is pretty much perfect, silly it took this long to get Diddy Kong back but it doesn't matter in the end

I would've loved more than 3 GCN tracks in the Booster Course Pass but given the choice between Mushroom Bridge and Daisy Circuit, DC all day

It is funny though that this highly comprehensive amalgamation of MK, with it metric shit ton of courses and roster that actually ended up quite good will probably exist maybe a year or less before the next one arrives.

It took 9 and 1/2 years since the original launch of Mario Kart 8, but now the game finally has Diddy Kong. I was pleasantly surprised too that we got 4 additional characters when everyone was expecting just 2.

I was already a little sick of the MK Wii pandering with Moonview last wave, so Daisy Circuit swiping another spot away from GCN kind of soured me on this final wave, ngl.

Very happy with Diddy and Funky finally returning; sad Dixie didn’t join them but I probably wasn’t going to swap off Birdo anyway so I’ll live

with any luck we'll get a few projects from the Yabuki Clan before the next Mario Kart

Wave Race? F-ZERO? a new racing IP? a new different IP? ARMS 2? Nintendogs??? the possibilities are limitless

8 Deluxe post-DLC might last

Arms 2 please my noodly arms are starving.

Also yeah I actually don't think we're seeing a new Mario kart this soon. Watch them patch 8DX for Switch 2 and carry on.

Okay, I’ve come around to the idea of Tanooki Mario and Cat Peach being combined with Mario and Peach to make room for the two extra characters, and now I’m thinking this might be the most likely outcome:

F6aXGv0aUAAFTYC

Diddy Kong and Funky Kong take the last two empty slots (sorry, Mii icon…) and then Pauline and Peachette take the place of Tanooki Mario and Cat Peach. Seems like the best place to fit in the new Kongs without changing up more of the layout (and it follows the consistent pattern of new characters taking the empty DLC slots from top to bottom in the order that they’re announced, since Diddy and Funky were the first two characters announced for this upcoming wave), plus all the human girls get to be together in the top row. The icons for Pauline and Peachette also roughly match the same general colors as Tanooki Mario and Cat Peach, so it keeps a similar aesthetic feel to the previous version of the character select screen this way, too.

I don’t think they’ll roll any characters into Mario. They want you to be able to hit A and select Mario no fuss.

I think they'll simply shrink down even more the icons and make lines of 10; it's going to be 50 slots perfectly.

After all, the icons were already shrunk when Birdo and the question marks were added.

they've got the source assets and the ability to adjust the character select screen whenever they want, i really don't think they'll have any issue making it 10x5

I think they will avoid 10x5 because it'll be too wide (or too tall, depending on the orientation).

Rolling Tanooki and Cat under regular Mario and Peach is by far the most logical option given the changes made to Mario and Peach specifically in the background as the DLC updates rolled out; unintentionally removing Mario and Peach variants as possible Grand Prix rivals for one patch, and then making it only so one Mario and Peach can appear as CPUs at a time (still the case as of Wave 5). The latter is a special property previously only applied to alts directly under an existing character (Yoshi, Shy Guy, Birdo and Inkling colours; Metal Mario after unlocking Gold; Champion's Tunic Link), and has never applied to the likes of the Babies, Dry Bowser, the Villagers or Inkling Girl and Boy (just the latter's alt colous as previously mentioned; one of each Inkling can appear).

Pauline and Peachette just fit in the best on the top row too, but aesthetics clearly aren't a primary concern for the roster here. There's no clear explaination for why they would apply that CPU function to Gold Mario and Pink Gold Peach as well if they aren't getting the alt treatment; i'd guess either the details weren't set in stone yet, or it's just for consistency's sake.

I don’t understand why people say this because
  1. Nintendo has never said that, and
  2. there’s no “fuss” to it, anyway; it’s literally just an extra button press.
In fact, Mario is arguably the one character who it would be the least amount of “fuss” for, since he’s already the default character that your cursor starts on; there’s no need to move the stick or anything, so what’s an extra button press? It’s really not a big deal.

Anyway, the fact of the matter is that, unless they’re going to literally tack on two extra slots to the side or drastically rearrange the entire layout to fit 50 icons (neither of which I think is likely at all), they have to combine characters to make room now. There are a number of potential options for that, sure, but I really do think that Tanooki Mario and Cat Peach are the most likely candidates for that.

For one, they’re the odd ones out in terms of character variants. All the other Mario series variant characters are together on the third row (the baby and metal characters; Dry Bones isn’t a variant, and Dry Bowser’s relationship to Bowser is…inconsistent), while Tanooki Mario and Cat Peach are up there on the top row by themselves. So for that reason it makes more sense to combine those two with Mario and Peach than the two metal characters (plus Metal Mario already has an alt, so they may not want to add more to that).

Plus, aside from the metal characters, those are the only two characters that are viable to be combined with other characters that would leave two empty slots right next to each other; the Inklings and Villagers are separated by Link, and Bowser Jr. separates Dry Bones and Dry Bowser. Nintendo clearly wants to disrupt the order of the character select screen as little as possible, given how they’ve handled it throughout the history of Mario Kart 8, and combining Tanooki Mario and Cat Peach into Mario’s and Peach’s slots seems to be the best way to go about doing that at this point to make room for Pauline and Peachette.

EDIT: And yeah, what @MondoMega said as well.

We’re going to have agree to disagree on this until it happens either way. It’s really just to keep selecting Mario as simple as possible for people who don’t play a lot of games.
