premliminary rankings:

great tier:
big bathtub: simple, but perfectly themed and has just enough variety to keep you engaged without overwhelming you
la: long, varied point to point race with a surprising number of gimmicks that blend pretty well. music's surprisingly a downgrade without the vocals, but the sax is nice
koopa cape: i actually don't agree with any of the complaints about it, and i'm not going to mourn the zappy lines ever, plus the underwater section being antigrav now leads to a lot of fun chaos
moonview highway: who allowed the city portion of this track to be such a bop. how is this legal.

good tier:
daisy cruiser: it's never been one of my favorites, but for a shorter course there's nothing wrong with it and this is a pretty good rendition with basically everything intact.
vancouver: something about lap 2 feels off, and lowers the whole package for me, but it's pretty good and the music has a pretty good glowup. antigrav on the suspension bridge is nice too

meh tier:
athens: it's... fine? i don't find it especially exciting to race on and it's ugly, but there's nothing explicitly wrong with it

sunset wilds:
sunset wilds: this one was always the most confusing choice, even before we knew about the glow ups some of the other gba tracks would have. it's so basic, and they didn't even get the one gimmick it had working for it.

I can't believe we're getting Dino Dino Jungle AND DK Mountain in one wave. Waluigi Stadium getting delayed really screwed everything up.

Wait I got it wrong. Moonview actually replaced the spare nitro in Wave 6?
That is not what I was expecting, but in retrospect it makes sense: they were at one point planning to make another nitro track for Tour, but it was scrapped sometime between when the Booster Course Pack was announced and now, so they would’ve had to replace it with something else.

So I guess we’re looking at this for Wave 6:

SNES Bowser Castle 3
GCN Mushroom Bridge
GCN DK Mountain
Wii Rainbow Road
Tour Rome Avanti
Tour Madrid
Piranha Plant Cove
Piranha Plant Pipeline

There are a couple GCN courses I would’ve rather seen, but I don’t think it’s a bad selection.

I’ll do impressions in a little bit, as I’m playing each track twice, but Moonview has randomly generated boost pads like Mute City!!

Overall quite happy with this one. Squeaky Clean is an awesome nitro addition. Digging every single Tour track this time, though LA Laps looks considerably rough visually imo. Can’t say I dislike any of these.

Bummer about Sunset, but it still comes around to being an enjoyable GBA track if a bit basic.

They could stand to have more traffic in Moonview, but I’m not too pressed about it because the original kinda pissed me off ngl lol.

Will forever be sad at how they massacred the water tunnel in Koopa Cape, but it’s still a blast.

And of course, the music continues to be next level.

I really don't think Mushroom Bridge is making it in. It's an incredibly simple track and extremely similar to Moonview Highway. Datamining also indicates that Daisy Cruiser was meant to be the Wave 4 GCN course, which is where everyone thought Mushroom Bridge would be. It's probably Dino Dino Jungle and DK Mountain, and Nintendo is letting it slide because both are fan favorites with enough to distinguish themselves from each other.

Didn't get LA Laps playing online tonight, oh well. Also it sucks they reduced the frequency of 200cc races online. Not sure why they did that.

First impressions for Wave 5 after playing a round of multiplayer and a round of single player.

Athens Dash - I like this one! It doesn’t feel like a City course by being mostly driving through ruins. Has a few gnarly turns and an exciting finish.

Daisy Cruiser - I was skeptical if I wanted this one back, but this a solid course and feels the best it has been here. I dig the goombas in the pool.

Moonview Highway - I’m glad I decided to do an extra round for this write up because I discovered the boost pads are randomly generated! Already was happy with the course, but this makes it even better!

Squeaky Clean Sprint - I was skeptical of a bathroom course, but this is excellent fun. Great layout, unusual and fun obstacles, plus a cool shake up with extra alternate routes for the final two laps. Great course.

LA Laps - SoCal!! I wish actual LA was this open and pleasant to drive in lol. I’m most familiar with downtown LA and the highways around it. While downtown doesn’t feel represented, the brief highway section actually captures a good feature of it so that was very cool. We have a lot of big city stuff represented in the Booster Course Pass already, so I’m still glad they focused on more of the fun stuff here like the Santa Monica beach.

Sunset Wilds - baffling choice of not having the sun actually set in some capacity aside, I like this one! The music is fun and I love the dancing shy guys. Pretty solid finish too. Wish we had mud instead of water pools so we could say Choco Island sort of made it in lol.

Koopa Cape - ok so this isn’t the Wii version clearly, but it actually kind of works out?? The weird shrunken course keeps the racing feeling tight and the short half pipe sizes make them fun to incorporate in a run. The speedy exit out of the pipe is great and the very final half pipe actually feels worth going for for once. The course select screen picture is weird with a ground structure over the water background lol.

Vancouver Velocity - this one got hyped up ahead of time a ton and while it doesn’t quite live up to the hype like Ninja Hideaway did for me, this is still clearly a great course. Love the first lap especially. Also there’s a section in lap 3 where you drive through a tunnel that reminds me of N64 Luigi Raceway in a great way.

Great wave overall. Absolutely wild we have 88(!!) tracks now in this game. It’s an embarrassment of riches and we still have the grand finale to come!

Saw some people here say they weren’t sure what others meant by Koopa Cape being smaller. Found some random footage on Youtube to compare the tracks with and I think it’ll come across. Also you can see the obstacles that got cut / replaced in the underwater section. The fast water in the underwater pipe especially was a big part of Koopa Cape’s original identity.

I’m happy how this version turned out though it certainly helped I was expecting a compromise walking in haha.

Thread of this update's (2.4.0) balance changes.

happy they did something for the heavy classes but overall it does very little to the meta which still favours the middleweights with specific vehicles. but you could say the pipeframe becomes much more viable now I can see that popping up with some of the buffed lighter characters eg Villager.

Piranha Plant Pipeline is lot more different than I was expecting. Half of the course is split between two different paths with completely different turns and obstacles. Pretty interesting.

This wave didn't really stand out to me unfortunately, though the best of the bunch has to be the new bathroom track which is very charming and a top 5 Boost Pass track. I guess Vancouver and Athens are some of the better city tracks, but they don't come close to Singapore. All the retro tracks just felt very mediocre to me, and Koopa Cape especially looks very underwhelming with very detailed water and extremely bland everything else.

Wave 3 with Maple Treeway, Peach Gardens, Berlin Byways, and the exceptional 3DS Rainbow Road remains the best one for me.

I thought this wave is not as bad as many of you are saying. That said, wave 3 is still my favourite wave.

Only thing I really don’t like is the sun not setting in Sunset Wilds. But other than that, that track is still enjoyable.

The GCN track is going to be a mystery. I still feel like Mushroom Bridge will be in and DK Jungle. If that’s the case, I’m sad they didn’t keep Daisy Cruiser or Moonview Highway for wave 6 as they are much more of a wave 6 track in my eyes.

It all comes tumbling down.

Paris 4 is dead too; either scrapped or we misunderstood the earlier gap. Either way, not happening.

CORRECTION: The Paris 4 gap remains! Still at 2 IDs like it always has been. Much like the GBA BC4 T and R/T i'm going to elect to not include it in my gap summary image, as it in all likelihood has been scrapped regardless. It's about time I update the overall course image though; and I figure I can pay special homage to it over there with some of the changes i've made since the last time I posted it on here (i'm not adding every currently unreleased R/T variant though; too much work):

I sureee hope Nintendo don't drop the Wave 5 trailer this week and immediately force me to update this again...

Yeah...

Mario_Kart_ID_Final_Countdown.png

As for racers, now that i'm covering that here;
  • Wiggler - item00205
  • Pauline (Cowgirl) - item00210
  • Wiggler Mii Racing Suit - item00240
My earlier post on driver IDs also made one mistake I need to correct; item00255 does not have any data, but item00279 does. Doesn't change the number of remaining drivers either way though.

I really need to get dressed so I can try these out before work...

Also, the next Mario Kart should have more tracks like Yoshi's Island, which are based on actual Mario games. Home Circuit, in someone's living room? Bob-omb Battlefield? Melty Monster Galaxy? Beanbean Kingdom? Yes please!

The one thing I don’t like about rainbow road is that I feel it implicitly prohibits more space themed tracks so it can retain what makes it special.

I would’ve looooved for them to go crazy with Galaxy themed tracks set in space.

Rainbow Road but it warps at random during the race and appears in the skies over every other track in the game as a grand tour type finale.

Please no Nintendo Kart, please no Nintendo Kart.

Let me have my Mario racing game in peace. Small crossovers here and there, sure. More crossovers within the Mario universes, yeah, gimme DK and Wario and Yoshi stuff. But I don't need Mario Kart to turn into yet another crossover. We got Smash Bros. for that! Lots of other companies are doing their crossovers! Not everything needs to be a crossover!
No worries, Mario Kart is a name that's far too sellable to change. But what would you think of a Mario Kart All Stars?
With half the tracks taken from Mario games, and the other half taken from crossovers. Now that the door to crossovers is open I wouldn't find it an inconsistent direction.

No Sunset on Sunset Wilds, I really didn't see it coming.
I can't get over it, even if it's patched later (we can still hope), it's still a shame that we didn't get it directly.
It's not like it's an idea left behind, it's on Tour. What's the problem? Has the wave been rushed?

yeah, Mario Kart is just too strong as a brand. I'm sure they won't deviate from it. I believe that Mario Kart is, in some instances, even more popular than the Mario brand in general.

I'm guessing the lack of sunset to night transition is because the engine does not support that sort of dynamic lighting change and a skybox transition which is unfortunate but they should've picked a different track. Tour can do it because it uses Unity and I would assume Unity supports that.

I'd wager they could have found a way to implement it but didn't see the payoff for one track.

That's just how commercial programming is.
It's not always about what you can do, but also if it's worth it and it's in the budget.

I think it would have had a higher chance to get the feature again if this was a new base game instead of an expansion pass that is pretty much just recycling content from another game they're sunsetting in a year.

My little review:

Vancouver, Athens and Los Angeles seem to me to be the 3 best cities added to the game (not counting Sydney, which seems to me the second best behind Vancouver). Having all 3 in the same wave is huge.

Koopa Cape is almost perfect. I don't like that they removed the water from the pipe, but the rest is perfect.

The bathroom is wonderful. I really liked the recreation. And also that there is an engagement ring in the pipe hahahaha. I wonder if they got the idea for this track from Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit.

I like Sunset Wild but I find all the SNES/NES/GBA tracks simple and boring, so I find it the weakest of the wave.

Daisy Cruiser I loved it. I was really looking forward to this track because I've only played MK DS and MK WII, and I've always read good things about this track. A good experience.

Moonview Highway very meh for me. Especially because they could have chosen any other WII track like Toad Factory or any other DS/3DS track. On Wii this track was the traffic track, so ok. In 8DX we got a very good traffic track, we got another one better than MH in the first DLC and maybe we will get another one also better in the next one. In my opinion, a wasted track, but I'm happy for its fans.

I love the characters, Wiggler is TOP3 characters for me. It's a pity Nintendo didn't want to bring more and only 2 are missing, but anyway.

I'm looking forward to wave 6. As a Spaniard, even though I don't like Madrid because I think cities like Barcelona, Seville or Valencia would be better cities in the game, I want to see how they represent my country. (Would be funny if it ends up being another city in the world and not spain, like the DK track... hahaha)

I also have to say that I find it very strange that out of the last 8 tracks in the game, 2 are southern European cities, 2 might be jungle themed GCN tracks (DD Jungle and DK Mountain) and 2 tracks have Piranha Plant in the name lol. Seems peculiar to me.

I'd even be fine with them making it like it was on the GBA, just making it darker every lap, but I don't know how well that would work for online.

Yeah, I think the budget for this project was pretty low to begin with, also because this is a free addition to NSO+. They're doing a really good job though imo, but with Sunset Wilds you really see that they wouldn't go the extra mile for this DLC.

Vancouver did the same thing to me as Singapore. I would have liked it more, but I don't know...
In Singapore, there's an escalation of ideas, and then it all falls apart : we go back to Chinatown which isn't the most interesting part, it ends up with something we've already seen and with little curves and straight lines.
Vancouver felt a bit like that to me but even more so, with the impression that the best part was the first half.

That said, I have a feeling that Athens is going to become one of my favourite cities. I've only played it once, so I'm not going to say this too quickly, but I got a very good impression.

Loved this wave.

Best 3 city tracks we've gotten, while Squeaky Clean Sprint is an all-time great. It's ridiculously good. Serious micro-machines-on-SNES vibes from when I was young.

Also helps that Vancouver and LA are two of the cities I've been to, which is always cool. For me it was LA Laps->Athens->Vancouver. Koopa Cape is also one of my favourites. Moonview was fine, Daisy Cruiser the best it has been even though I'm not a fan, and Sunset Wilds a big disappointment. Basically echoing everyone else here.

Now, my least favourite track in MK history is probably Dino Dino Jungle and I'm no fan of DK Mountain either, so just avoid those for wave 6 and this will have been a hell of a set of DLC.

Ok, I take back of part of what I said about the track. That is a nice quirk.
Less traffic isn't as big of an issue when each race you have to quickly assess where the boosters are and react to it. Keeps the feeling of Moonview Highway while still making it more accessible.

It's funny cause the Pipe Frame was my go to kart with Luigi since MK8 on Wii U days, and now it's getting a slight buff and it's meta now. I'll stick with the blue and yellow kart that Luigi drives in all the promo now I guess.
