Pre-Release Super Mario RPG remake — Pre-release Discussion Thread (UPDATE: developed by ArtePiazza)

Super Mario RPG has always seemed a middling RPG to me, especially in comparison to what came later with Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi. However, I can't deny the visual upgrade has helped the game look immediately interesting, in a way that hasn't happened for me with stuff like, say, the FF Pixel Remasters.

My only hope with this game is that the superboss fight looks as if it came out of FFXVI. It's the only way to do that justice.

I think it's just Square Enix again. We already know they got the original composer back.
Maybe. But do they have a dev team that isn't busy on their major titles?

While Square Enix is undoubtedly involved, they could still be contracting an outside developer to handle the heavy lifting.

Surely interesting
Generally speaking I like how Nintendo seems to approach old glories with modern touches

Played part of it, never understood what the big deal was (outside that it was obviously the first jrpg for 3/4 of fami...) so i put it down to nostalgia.

I also always found the game to be really really ugly (mostly because of the perspective), but it definitely had its distinctive look.

The remake looks fine, keeping the proportions gives it its own charme. I find it way to clean looking. but thats modern gaming now.
To rarely experimenting with shaders and textures outside of "japan" style or "anime" style.

100% with you in regards to pixel remasters.

still curious to know who's the actual development team behind this, I'm thinking perhaps Grezzo still but maybe not.
i'm getting grezzo vibes too.

it's so weird that Nintendo announces games and we won't know the developer for months. i remember it took months to actually confirm next level is making Luigi's mansion 3

maybe but Square Enix isnt a stranger to contract third party developers for games such as the HD 2D games for example and it wouldn't be impossible through Nintendo that they got Grezzo on it but either way you definitely have some of the OG team members working on it at least in a supervising fashion.

i don't think SE has anything to do with this project other than licensing their rights to Nintendo. the composer is not an SE employee.

Nope! The characters and worldbuilding alone were better in SMRPG.

And going for personal insults prove how good you are at making arguments.

(And you don't even write well to make that kind of statement in the first place).

No, they were totally right

WOW! Such a hard choice, I don't know how anyone could pick one of the... SMRPG is beating preorders while I'm writing this.

(Yes, Atlus is probably joking about this but they deserve all of this at this point).
It's a parody account. Stop being so serious

I've tried on multiple occasions in the past to play SMRPG, but I could never get far into it. Never had anything to do with the game itself, usually just got distracted by other games or life stuff. Hopefully this gives me the excuse I need to finally give it a full playthrough

The composer for this game is Shimomura right? She also made music for the Mario & Luigi series and the new Mario and Rabbids game.

If this mario rpg remake starts a new era of mario rpg games while paper mario starts to go more action rpg I would be super happy.
I really hope this game becomes a huge success.

That's not modern gaming, that's aiming for the shiny look of 1996 CG renders.
in less talking about this game (i actually find it fitting here, even if its kinda missing the noise of the original).

lower resolution, textures, draw distance, analog outputs etc meant games just looked less clean. And while the clean high resolution flat model textures/materials look fine with some games (especially if they lean into it), there are just way to many games nowadays that looks kinda like plastic to me.

Day 0 physical version
I'd say since Hoops 3 on 3 I could see the posibility of Mario RPG coming back. Hopefully this leads us to other games in the series.

It'd be cool if in this version of the game, the armor sets would actually change the character's clothes to match the designs they had in the player's guide.

There was a whole sailor themed set even! But then the characters would just look the same as usual after equipping... Always thought that was such a shame.

I'm so happy Mario RPGs are officially not shit anymore, even just temporarily and through a remake.

I am so glad they handled the visuals the way they did. The stubby little models are perfect.

I’m actually playing the original now. And compared to the original… I don’t really like the new visuals at all. The SNES game has style and charm, and the remake feels soulless in comparison. I’m really happy for all the folks who will finally be able to play SMRPG, and I might buy it anyway to support the game. But I’m more than happy to stick with the original version.

Mario RPGs were never shit because Paper Mario doesn't even know what it wants to be, it certainly isn't an RPG anymore :p
Paper Mario mostly wants to be an adventure game by now based on TOK alone.

I think what they need to do is ditch the battle system altogether and just go all out with it (and maybe add a few RPG aspects like Super Paper Mario did).

Agreed. And rebrand the series since it's not Paper Mario anymore.

Agreed, a mix of TOK and Super Paper Mario would be perfect. Just shoving a random half RPG battle system in each one doesn't work.

Throw in some puzzels and it would be perfect.

Undecided if I'll get this. It's the only Mario RPG I've played that I straight up fell off of because I just wasn't having much fun. It's weird because I know how highly praised it is, and I know it's the basis for Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi which I love, but it just wasn't hooking me at all.

That said, I can't help but feel the new coat of paint and modern interface could help a ton. Which is unusual for me - I'm someone who can typically put up with that stuff (I played the original Metroid for the first time on NSO and really enjoyed it) - but I think it might've been part of the problem for me.

Eh, Origami King is probably my second favorite in the series, TTYD being ahead, but Super and 64 being slightly behind. I think Color Splash is pretty underrated as well, the individual scenarios writing is actually very solid.

For me it's a tight call between Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario TTYD for best Mario rpg. My opinion seems to shift to whichever one I've replayed recently 😅

Ranking them I'd go

Super Mario RPG/PM TTYD
Paper Mario
Mario & Luigi BiS
Mario & Luigi SSS

The 5 above are all top tier games imo, after that it's a sharp drop off to a bunch of games I didn't like/finish. The only game I finished was Super Paper Mario, and it's a lot like Color Splash and Oragami King where it's writing is excellent but the gameplay does little for me.

It's everything I wanted.
A remake.
They kept the art-style
They kept the game play
Square-Enix is involved at minimum in approving use of their characters

I hope they bring the original font back for this remake.
I wonder what other special things they add in.

Interesting they called it simply super Mario RPG. Is this a low key rebrand/refresh allowing for a true SMRPG2?
