Pre-Release Super Mario Bros. Wonder — Pre-release Discussion Thread

I'm convinced most of the people bashing NSMBU haven't actually played it. It's got some of the best level design in the series.
Eh, it had some good levels, sure, but Luigi U was the way better game, and i don think NSMBU does anything better then NSMBWii or SMB3/World (except that world is simply to easy).

These animations look straight out of the instruction manuals of NES and SNES Mario games and I love it
Yeah, Marios ANIMATIONS are great. The model has definitely way more charme then the NSMB one.

--------------------------------------

Im already loosing interest in discussing this game, it came to the situation i worried:
no chance to have a nuanced discussion about artstyle, it is people that see it as a evolution/change of the NSMB style and then we have people that position those as ignorant or even straw men them and call for bans.
Thats just not fun.

The new power-up turns Mario into Benjamin Blümchen, lmao xD

I strongly doubt that. It has good and solid level design, it's basically a modern SMW. I 100%ed back on the Wii U.

However, it looks and sounds absolutely boring and exactly the same as the three games before it.

Music and visuals are too important for platformers, just solid level design isn't enough.

Imagine if the classic Sonic and Mario games all shared the same music and graphics. Look how no one cares for Lost Levels.

I take your point, but I'd counter that The Lost Levels has some absolutely abysmal design.
OK that's true lol. But even without that game the point still stands.

Now Wonder is great, it's doing its own to differentiate it from NSMBU Deluxe. The two can co exist on the same platform easily.

I have beaten it 100% Twice.

Good level design only goes so far when NSMBU reuses pretty much everything from the Wii and DS games. Hell, NSMB for the DS has more unique mechanics, level gimmicks, assets compared to NMSB Wii then NSMBU

Not to mention the music being bland and uninspired.
the time limit is gone
This is probably one of the biggest things. It really seems this game is really built upon exploration and experimentation. Both of which are greatly hindered when you have a time limit.

That's arguably even bigger a change for 2D Mario than getting rid of lives.

Like it says a lot that the last 2D Mario that had no time limit was waaaaaaaaaaaaaay back with Mario 2/USA.
A game that wasn't originally designed to be a Mario game.

Super Mario Bros 2 has a soft spot in my heart. It's the odd one out of trio of 2d games(lost levels doesn't count) and I like that.

I mean the time limit would be the part of the UI in the trailer, but it clearly isn't. There is only the timer with the wonder flower things.

I’m glad, especially as there’s going to be constant experimentation of ‘something weird just happened, play with it and figure it out!’. That’s not the kind of thing I’d want to do on a time limit, any more so than if there were time limits on shrines that require you to build things in ToTK.

I wasn't a big fan of the visuals when I half-watched the trailer at work (don't tell my boss).

I rewatched it on my PC screen and golly gosh, I love the expression of the characters (that Goomba face when Stretched Mario is about to crush him !), the semi- stop motion animation, the colors ! I dig it !

Have you paid attention to the new jumping sound effect? It sounds so good.

The more I look at it, the better it gets. It's so unusual for Nintendo to put so much attention on the visual flair of their games in a trailer. The whole stop-motion-but-not-really look is some next-level stuff.

This has more of the quinessential Mario charm than even the 3D Mario games which is insane to think about. They utterly nailed it.

Some random observations from watching the trailer a bunch more times:
  • Alongside the graphics, pretty much all of the sound effects have gotten a refresh as well. From jumps and stomps to pipes and powers, so much has been refreshed for the first time since NSMBWii. Really helps with the game feeling fresh!
  • The talking flowers let the game provide tutorials and in-level reactions without requiring the player to stop and hit a block. Text and voice means that things are much easier to notice. A smart move.
  • The game takes place in the Flower Kingdom, making this the first 2D Mario game since Super Mario Land 2 to not take place in the Mushroom Kingdom. I don't see a "world" name on the map screen - maybe the game isn't as strictly divided and instead exploration depends on the Wonder Seeds you collect?
  • Indeed, the time limit is gone! But thanks to the Wonder Flower challenges, we still have the interesting use of timers combined with a more relaxed main game. A great compromise!
  • Although there's no score, it seems that the game tracks who is ahead in multiplayer with the crown icon. I almost thought it was tied to P1, but it isn't, the order of players is dictated by the lives counter and it doesn't match up, nor does it indicate who is controlling the camera since other players have been ahead. I assume things like coin collection and stomp combos are tracked in the background for this kinda thing.
Gosh, I am so excited for this game!!

I really like the little talking flowers going ‘hey!’ and so on when you go past. They are so cute!

The level of creativity is just so much fun, I love Mario when every level has some new thing going on to play with for a bit.

The trailer is such a joy to watch. I've rewatched it quite some times now, but the movements, animations and sounds are so satisfying.

My favourite example is the twirl, you can shortly see it the trailer but the amount of expression shown compared to the New series is wild.

Also, the NSMB series was never inherently bad as some people seem to make it out for here. It was just in need of some freshness, which is exactly what this game seems to be!

I loved all the New Soup games but it definitely got a little boring by the Wii U entry. Despite that, it was a great game and there's a reason these games sell so well.

This new Wonder game looks similar, but more than different enough to get me EXCITED again for 2D Mario.

Where's my girl Toadette, though?

Curious about the structure of this game and if we’re getting the same 8 world structure

EPD’s switch releases, between the Zelda’s and Odyssey, have been so much BIGGER than their predecessors. Wonder if this follows suit.

They should have called the game just Super Mario Wonder, right?
Super Mario Wonder or Super Mario Wonderland both feel better. I'm guessing they wanted to keep the word "Bros." to indicate that this is a 2D game and not a flagship 3D entry.

If that's the case I still wish they had gone for something more like "The Wonderful Super Mario Bros."

Super Mario Bros. Wonder just feels so...odd

What's with all of the unprovoked Lost Levels hate in this thread lol

I think this game looks really good, and I hope they stuff it full of all sorts of wild stuff in the style of Super Mario World.

Are World and Land not apart of the mainline 2D series then?
Sure they are - they also launched over 30 years ago and predate the 3D series, and so they're not relevant to choosing naming conventions today.

Edit - also, I wasn't talking about differentiating 'main series' entries; purely Nintendo differentiating the 2D titles from 3D titles in their branding.

Showed this to my partner who’s only played Odyssey (“when are they going to make an Odyssey sequel” he is always asking, “where is the Odyssey sequel”) and he laughed with delight the whole time. Cannot wait to co-op this.

the game looks amazing! While I can see where people are coming from thinking it looks similar to NSMB, to me this just looks so well animated and expressive compared to that! Just look at Mario’s run cycle, jump animation and face!

Just realized, maybe this will have online co-op like 3D World+? Would be fantastic.
Doesn't seem to be in the trailer, but in the Direct I thought it specified local co-op. And the eShop page only says 1-4 players local.
eShop mentions some form of online component but specifically only mentions local multiplayer on one Switch system. So...maybe? But they haven't said it and this game is coming out in four months, so set your expectations low.
Where? At least on the web version I just see mention of cloud support.

I hope subsequent Super Mario Bros. Wonder use the Wonder:
• Super Mario Bros. Wonderland/WonderLand/Wonder Land

• SMB Wonderworld/WonderWorld/Wonder World

I feel like they can make one or two more games out lf this concept

I hope not, l wouldn't want this to become the new NSMB.
