I can't get over how absolutely incredible this looks!!!!
NEW 2D SONIC AND 2D MARIO IN THE SAME YEAR?
AHHHHHHHHHH!

I've actually gone back to looking at the NSMBU Deluxe trailer and then the Wonder trailer and feeling almost like I'm being gaslit here, lol.

Sure, the characters animate entirely differently - and a ton better, especially facially - and the character models are tilted towards the camera for increased expressiveness. And the lighting in the background has improved hugely, and there is more detail, making the game look less "sterile". I mean, you'd expect these things to get better a whole decade later. But overall, it's just an improvement on the same NSMBU style, surely? It took me some time for me to notice those differences at all, save for some of the immediately apparent new animations. Maybe this is just a semantic disagreement over what constitutes a "style"?

NBMBU Deluxe trailer for context:

The game looks great, so there's no need to get defensive, but it DOES share qualities with the nsmb aesthetic. Some people will use that as a jab I guess, but it's true. It's an evolution of that style.

The major difference with the style now is how alive it looks, because of the character models and animation. It's fantastic.

Sad to say but the artstyle looks pretty off to me....don't like it.
But the gameplay looks fun.
Yep. I mean 2d Mario gameplay is 2d Mario gameplay. The game did nothing for me as far as excitement. I will purchase and play it depending on when it releases and what else I have going on. I don’t see it as a must purchase.

Looks delightfully weird. Would've liked a bit more of a departure from the NSMB style but oh well.

This is absolutely phenomenal. the artstyle, the new mechanics, the power ups....can't wait for October.

My final feeling on this is I guess, does it look like a game we're gonna be talking about as a platforming masterpiece in 30 years? That's the standard I hold a new 2D Mario game and based on this trailer I just don't really see that being the case.

This is the best a 2D Mario could look ever. For all of us who grew with the classic Mario games and their instructions manuals with all of the illustrations, this is a love letter. Very, very surprised

Also I'm glad they seem to be approaching more to the crazyness of retro DK country and Rayman origins/legends. 2D Mario getting out of the confort zone at last.

There are definitely some similarities to NSMB, with the whole 2D/3D mix thing, and some of the ground tiles. But overall it feels a hell of a lot less sterile than NSMB, and that's enough for me. It's like the whole game has the flair of that one NSMBU painting level.

NBMBU Deluxe trailer for context:

It took you time to notice the difference between the trailer you just posted and the Wonder trailer? Really?

The 3D rendered aesthetic and clear foreground separation are shared between the two games - probably to help readability - but nearly everything else is different (animations, lighting, UI, color usage, artistic flourishes, etc). It's like that one van gogh level in NSMBU, but better, for every level. It's 95% less sterile than NSMB.

Like, this is weird in the way classic SMB games were and NSMB never was.

Excited to play exclusively as Daisy...unless Rosalina is an option of course.

Also the taking flowers are annoying, I hope you can turn them off.

looks really beautiful, love everything about the visual style and animation

however at first blush I am NOT into the English-language voice clip sound effects lmao. and “power-up that does an unpredictable thing depending on the level” is not exactly the kind of game design I think is very fun or good after an initial bit of surprise but I’ll keep an open mind

in any case this looks 1000x more interesting than any of the NSMB games, can’t wait

I can't get over how expressive and beautiful the artstyle is, most anticipated game in the second half of the year with Starfield now. The wait was worth it for a new 2D Mario.

So wacky and creative, exactly what I would expect from Nintendo. This looks like the kind of game you'll play with a smile on your face the entire time.

It's really cool how people keep using the term gaslighting for simple disagreements, totally normal behaviour

I don’t know what people disappointed in this game’s look actually want their Mario games to look like. This is what Mario looks like. The 3D ones look like this too. Welcome to the Mario franchise, I guess?

But this game looks to have 100 times more personality than the New games, and that’s what counts.

Not fan of the artstyle. While I appreciate some changes it is still too similar to NSMBU for my taste. Maybe it will grow on me though.
I would love some HD sprite based artstyle like Hollow Knight. A HD SMW successor.

Yeah, there’s undeniably similarities to New Soup, and I can understand that still being a turn-off. I do wish they added a bit more texture to the models, make em look a little less “clean.”

But what they’ve added is already bringing so much personality to a previously sterile look that I don’t care all that much that it’s not the hand drawn style that I wanted.

They’re channeling it, and I’m so happy that they are. It looks goofy, weird, and joyful in ways that makes 3D Mario exciting,

Not really into it unfortunately. 2D Mario has never really been my thing to be fair but the art style just doesn't work for me.

I noticed this too and saw a few others point it out. Charle's is getting older, they can't keep using him forever. Wondering if they finally bit the bullet and recast for the sake of longevity.
Maybe he saw his role in the movie as his send off for the character.

Does it not mean "intentionally being told an incorrect thing to cause confusion"? I am 100% under the impression that that's what it means.

Not sure what you're getting at here.
Maybe don't use words that you don't know the meaning and their intended use then?

This is the best looking 2D game Nintendo has made since Yoshi's Island. Just gorgeous.

They had a vision here and nailed it perfectly.

This is absolutely NOT the new aesthetic wtf are you talking about
this doesn't look like the new aesthetic at all
This doesn't look like NSMB at all lol. This look a loooootttt more expressive and color palette are more akin to 2D arts more
I get that they've animated the characters differently, but the style of the environments and ground tiles, right down to the way the bushes are drawn, that's all 100% still NSMBU. It even still uses that same retro font imitating the SMB title screen, which was exclusively a NSMB thing. Only major difference I'm seeing is that they're actually all new environments for once, and they noticeably upgraded the detail and effects on the backgrounds (though so did NSMBU from NSMBWii).

Even the music still seems tied to that one vocal effect everyone hates. Hopefully that was just an unfortunate coincidence, because I never minded the way NSMB looked much, but the lows of the music when it fully embraced its "NSMB-ness" were like self-parody. The NSMB2 athletic theme should have been a YouTube shitpost, instead it's in a game that millions of people bought.

You cannot be aware that you are incorrect about any given thing until someone corrects you. Think.

Anyway, I've looked it up in the dictionary: "to cause (a person) to doubt their judgment, memory, or sanity through the use of psychological manipulation"

Not particularly different from what I thought at all. Again, what are you getting at?

My immediate reaction to seeing people saying it's a brand new style was: "Wait, did we see the same thing? Am I crazy? Or are they?" Seems to fit to me. Explain yourself.

It's like a mix between something new and NSMBU which is a good thing because despite the oversaturation of NSMBU over the past 16 years I still like those games.

it's probably still martinet
Yeah. He's getting old. Whenever we got actual new voice samples from him during the Switch era, I thought it started to sound a little off in comparison to what he used to sound like.
Doesn't bother me at all, but yeah, the man has been doing it for what will soon be 30 years (!!), so yeah, it's bound to sound different.

You should no better by now. You are not allowed to go against the grain here. 😂

Kyoto hiring October 2019 gone. Two more remains.

Tokyo hiring for 3D game - October 2019 (next gen at this point and 3D Mario)
Tokyo hiring for 2D game - August 2020 (2D Donkey Kong)

Really dang interested in this game. I've been cool on 2D Mario games for a long time and haven't picked up many since the DS game. Wonder looks like a really fun time so I'm day 1 for it.
