Indeed. Showing only a 2D Mario would be disappointing.

But I'm reticent in attributing any relevance to Gamescom. Nintendo could showcase DLCs, evergreen titles and a couple of new games and call it a day. Their presence could be a mere generic marketing push for the whole brand, in preparation for the next years, and not for specific titles. If the alleged 2D Mario has fresh ideas and is a multiplayer party mayhem, it could be enough.

I'm expecting a September Direct, so they can't blow their full load right now. Gamescom, being late August, would always be limited in scope.

Your middle paragraph describes perfectly how Nintendo usually sees and plans their GamesCom attendance.

Of course, if they announce a new 2D Mario this week, it'll be the bigger focus at their booth, but there will be a lot of demo stations for evergreens, and yes also for their "family" (casual) stuff like Horse Shit game.
And a few stations for upcoming Indie games.

Source: My own experiences from attending GamesCom for 11 years until Covid hit.

When thinking about GamesCom and Nintendo, always keep in mind that this stuff will be planned and done by Nintendo Germany, and these people are still in the "Wii Blue Ocean" mindset.
You can see it how they do their TV ads. 80% it's for one of the casual games like Switch Sports, the other 20% are Kirby, Pokemon and Splatoon.
During the "height" of TotK's release, i've seen a Zelda TV ad a whoopin' 4 times.

MP4 wouldn't have showfloor demos even if it would be coming out this fall.

Gamescom presence is completely justified by a new 2D Mario releasing this year, whether you like it or not.

In 6 hours the website will have crashed and we'll all have gone feral because we can't get into the Direct thread.

Thanks @Raccoon for giving us all an outlet until then.

Ok, too many leaks for me, maybe it's time to get out of the internet for a while, just a few more hours fami, it has been an amazing ride.

I feel like after months of believing/telling people that a super Mario RPG remake had to be a thing for sure, I'm going to be vindicated soon.

Besides, how is showing a new actual 2D Mario that's not just a level pack disappointing? The series has been in hiatus for a decade.

I think people understimate the impact of Mario 2D games that change the style and add new gameplay

It's mostly that the easy to immediately pick up, chaotic yet not overwhelming 4-player multiplayer component of 2D Mario is literally made for showfloor demos.

Pokémon Presents began in 2013. Pokémon has been in directs since then and no, not just NSO stuff. In March of 2020, sword and shield
Expansion pass information was in a Nintendo Direct Mini. Pokémon Snap was in the September 21’ direct. In fact, Pokémon is a regular in the September directs, and occasionally in the June ones (though typically based around E3), and often contains new news on the games.

You’re simply incorrect stating Pokémon news doesn’t happen in directs anymore. It’s actually quite common. They just don’t typically announce NEW Pokémon games in a direct anymore.
He is correct though, the very first Pokemon Presents happened in June 2020, before it was Pokemon Direct, since the branding had been established, general direct just didn't feature Pokemon anymore, and no, Pokemon Snap wasn't in the September 21 direct.

Baten Kaitos I & II are among the best works of Motoï Sakuraba.
Le Ali Del Principio (The Wings of Beginning -thanks guys-) song for BK II was written by Yuko Sakuraba (his wife) and sung by their 9yo daughter, Mio.

Since it never came to France, I never played BK II. I've been told that the moment this song pops up in the story is mind blowing.

I can't wait !

It's unwritten law that you can't just do certain boss fights in both games without dancing off at least 10 minutes to the Chaotic Dance OST that plays during them.

The hate for the New SMB series is insane.
While NSMB is OK during the NDS era, the subsequent never changing releases made it somewhat stale at the point that you just had enough of it. That's coming from someone who have played the game up to the SNES era. My biggest issue against it is that the controls seems too slippery for me coming from Super Mario World.

If have to predict first party games

Mario 2D, Mario RPG remake, Pikmin 4, F-Zero Remastered, something unpredictable, and my personal choice: Dr Mario

Also probably 1 2024 game, either Prime 4 or Genealogy or even Mario TTYD

Principio is Beginning, Principe is Prince.

The time now is definitely for a brand new 2D Mario, but I hope they bring the New games back some day that aren’t on Switch. The original was good fun, but the Wii game is especially amazing. I’m fine with New Super 2, being left behind, but if they ever bring back New Super 1 why not bring 2 at that point.

Just thought of a silly name if they ever brought the first New Super Mario Bros back. Call it Big New Super Mario Bros as you have it on a bigger screen lol.

A Paper Mario remastered and Mario RPG remake both to be released soon kinda clash with each other

Paper Mario should be shadow dropped in a Direct and Mario RPG to be released in the future. along with a new 2D Mario maybe this is Nintendo way of capitalizing from the Mario Movie

I think is similar to the Green Hill Zone hate, they are good, but at some poiny you just have to move on
There hasn't been a new "New" game in over a decade so it's safe to say Nintendo has moved on - it's time for the fans (and haters) to do the same.

They really should have done “New Super Mario All Stars” and just given us the whole collection. It would have been the perfect way to cap off the legacy of that era of Mario.

Lovely
just os thing: PRINCIPIO means BEGINNING, not prince :)

Nintendo will never get too crazy with 2D Mario. It's the one rather traditional gaming experience of theirs with by far the most casual appeal and so always designed accordingly. It will never not heavily focus on extremely easy to understand game language and accommodating the 4-player multiplayer experience. The traditional level select structure, expected stage themes, slower paced platforming, easy-to-read art style and never overwhelming game design are inherent to that.

I've said this before, but I would be extremely disappointed if Nintendo's upcoming releases were primarily remasters/remakes -
I hope this Direct has some brand new stuff coming soon.

At the same time I can't really blame Nintendo for doing them considering the massive hype from just rumours for stuff like F-Zero, Paper Mario, Mario RPG, etc.

I can’t sleep.

Who knew waiting for a Tweet in the morning would feel like waiting for Santa. It’s all madness and I’m living for it.

What if all the rumours have been confused and what we actually get is a new 2D Mario where you travel to different dimensions and have to recruit other Mario’s to help you on your quest. You travel to the worlds of TTYD and SMRPG and recruit those Mario’s and then you have a big ruck with Mr Horace at the end!

I think the important thing is we’re winding the generation down so Nintendo won’t do as much new games and we’ll see more ports and remasters. SMRPG remake is a big remake too. F-Zero being gone for so long is a big deal even if it’s only F-Zero GX. So, at least the ports/remakes/remasters are pretty exciting.

Super Mario - Infinity Wa.... hooo

I have a prediction regarding the title of the new 2D Mario game, you know that thing franchises do where they name a new entry after the first installment? Such as, Sonic the Hedgehog, God of War etc, The new 2D Mario game is just going to be called "Super Mario Bros."

a brand new 2D mario will be a big deal just gotta look at how well those games sold over the years.

Give it a new appealing artstyle and also playable online and you get an easy 10 million seller which is far more than any niche franchise people would consider "better" (besides the obvious)

It's very dumb but, I get weirdly anxious always right before a direct is announced.
