For some reason I'm getting Partner Showcase vibe for June. It doesn't make sense at all, since Nintendo has a barren fall line up, but that's just the vibe I'm getting.

I don't know people were putting so much stock into Gamescom. Nintendo just uses that even mostly as an in-person advertisement, just like most conventions. They've brought evergreen or released titles there in the past and even when they had upcoming games scheduled, they sometimes didn't even have booths for those games at Gamecom.

yeah this is in part my bad

I assumed it was a bigger deal based on a few posts and didn't look further into what historically has been there

full steam ahead to September

It could still be next week, (mere hours before the meeting if it's Wednesday mind you), but I'm starting to think we're in for another "Partner Showcase followed by first party Twitter drops weekly" kinda Summer. If this holiday is really just remasters and Mario Party, I could see them not caring enough to put a Direct together ig.

I get the feeling people think i was joking when i was describing how Nintendo usually sets up their GamesCom booth and all ...

I wasn't. ;D

I went to GamesCom every year for 11 years, it's first hand experience. ;D

I think the likelihood of a Partner Showcase is pretty high: Nintendo will sometimes make marketing deals with third parties that I believe require them to showcase the game in a presentation in June. It’s weird, but I think it tracks.

That’s fine! Third party games are still games.

Honestly it could be a Partner Showcase but then they’re like “yeah our partners at Intelligent Systems are here to announce Paper Mario TTYD Remastered, and our partners at RGG Studio are here to announce F-Zero GX HD”

Why are people comparing Nintendo's mall tour to Gamescon? Aren't those entirely different things with entirely different audiences?
Nintendo's con appearances in the Switch era have been so hit or miss, sometimes it's the expected "bunch of demos for upcoming releases" but then it's also just been one game (Smash in 2018, I can't think of a single other game from that year they demoed at a con prior to release), and then of course, the evergreen promotions, no new games, just the big titles they've released in the past several years. Literally EGLX (a con I've been to) has had both happen, in 2018 Nintendo brought the evergreens to the show literally the day after Smash was announced, and in 2019 they brought their E3 stock (alongside the Link's Awakening dioramas actually) before a few of the games released

Here's my wild new theory that I'm calling "Please understand" theory

We won't get a Direct this week or next, and people will be baffled. "But the financial briefing!" The financial briefing comes, and this is what Furukawa says

In the next fiscal year we will be launching a successor platform, so please understand that most of our development has shifted to supporting it. However, we will continue to support Nintendo Switch with new software that will be announced as we deem appropriate.

He'll then talk about the movie, Zelda sales, and marketing initiatives like the mall tour and shareholders will be appeased. After all, they're in it for the money, not games.

Does Team June win if we get a Partner Showcase? Because this is feeling just like last year where we we all confident in a full June direct and we all know what happened. It was still a fairly solid presentation, but just not the same as a full general.

If you have a playable demo for a new Smash game you make every demo kisosk available for Smash only. You invade the demo kiosk of companies around you that have switch units set up to put the Smash demo on them.

To be fair to you, Gamecom was becoming more prominent in recent years (at least before Covid) among other game companies and they were using the event to announced stuff. But Nintendo never really made big announcements or presentations around it. It being in mid to late August puts in a weird spot where it's after E3 and prior to a typical September Direct. If E3 happened that year, Nintendo would essentially just bring their E3 demos to Gamescom along with titles that were already released.

Dude it gets so tiring. That’s why I don’t like being around so much. Because we go through the same cycles. People take the smallest unrelated thing to mean we’re not getting a direct.

Hey, i try my best to take those smallest unrelated things to do dad-joke-level jokes!

This. I don't get the obsession with "oh it's just a partner showcase". More games are more games :D

I can't imagine they would twitter drop whatever their big holiday game is, and waiting until September to announce it is just too long.

People, I'm pretty sure a mall tour has no effect whatsoever on a Direct happening or not. If Gamescom won't, so won't "Mall of America"

Their big holiday game is, probably, a mix of “please keep buying Zelda” and “Pokémon DLC”

My glass half full mindset if Switch becomes a first party wasteland after Pikmin 4 is that means Nintendo should have a pretty stacked first year or two for the Switch 2 for 2024-2025.

I think the Switch’s last year (the one we’re in) is just gonna be back-loaded with Mario Kart DLC, Pokémon DLC, a remastered GameCube game or three (we already got one so far this year) and that kinda thing. And Pikmin 4. Anything big is absolutely being held back for the new hardware.
