Kinda rooting for a avatar bet, so when the Direct is announced all the non-believers will have Falco. Truly the StarFox sweep we need.

I have a great reason for why Nintendo needs a direct this summer

Because i need Grasshoper to announce the remastered of Flower,Sun and Rain in a direct, and see the reaction from people who have no idea what they are looking at
Twist: The Grasshopper countdown website was also the countdown to the Direct the whole time.

Reasons there will be a direct in June:
  • No games announced or dated after Pikmin 4 Releases in July
  • Full first half game schedule which easily could have been shifted to later if need be.
  • June has a history of being a month of announcements
  • Nintendo still wants to sell 15 million Switches, which will take a robust schedule with little lulls.

Reasons there will not be a direct in June:
  • Last few years has shown that no E3 means no General Direct
  • No leaks or hints from any source
  • Could be a lighter rest of the year with remasters and small titles carrying the rest of the year
  • Nintendo believes Zelda and Pikmin are enough for the summer and will reload August/September
  • Wants to distance themselves away from Summer Games Fest.

We should get a running list of good reasons going why there is a Direct in June:

1: They plan to sell 15 million Switches - Zelda and Pikmin alone aren’t enough.

2: The release calendar is running thin - Pikmin 4, Metroid Prime 4, and Detective Pikachu 2 are literally it right now and we’ve seen absolutely nothing for Metroid Prime 4 and Detective Pikachu 2.

3: Investor meeting is coming up - they won’t have just Pikmin and Prime 4 on that long running release calendar list. (Detective Pikachu 2 won’t be listed)

4: 3rd Party Games need detailing - while we do have a good June ahead and an independently good forming September ahead, the last Direct basically just took us until July, so from Nintendo directly we need to hear more. 3rd parties pay to be featured in these things, so one way or another something is happening for third parties.

5: We have a solid amount of rumored games and job listings to look at - There are games in the works clearly. Most popular front runners are 2D Mario (job listings), Donkey Kong (rumored and job listings) and potential remasters.

6: A growing amount of candidates for 3rd party appearances - we have a pretty solid amount of third party games that could show up at Nintendo show from Square Enix (Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D and Monsters), Capcom (Ace Attorney), Level 5 (Layton, Fantasy Life, and Decapolice), and Marvelous (Daemon X Machina 2 and more) at least. The other regulars like Koei Tecmo, Namco Bandai, and Sega you could come up with potential games for easily if you wanted.

7: H1 was stacked for Nintendo - If Nintendo actually ran out of games ahead, they’d shuffle games and DLC around. They created a black hole of info to get all eyes on Zelda. Soon Zelda’s time alone in the spotlight will inevitably end.

8: Pikmin 4 needs help - I adore Pikmin, but it needs all the marketing love it can get. What better way to get eyes on it than one last Direct appearance potentially where they announce what multiplayer modes it’ll have.

9: Mario Kart Wave 5 teaser - waves 3 and 4 both had a two track teaser ahead of release in a Direct. Seems like a good thing to keep going.

10: Zelda TK DLC announcement - the seemingly inevitable DLC announcement will likely come in a Direct to get as many eyes on it as possible. They might not want to wait too long as more people start finishing it.

Ok I had fun hitting ten, that’s enough for now lol. Oh wait one more:

11: Switch 2 is likely backwards compatible - any and all efforts now will only help Switch 2 going forward. There’s no reason to stop the software and there’ll likely be a good cross gen period anyway since the Switch userbase is so huge and engaged.

A June Direct of some sort is coming and it’s going to be cool.

I think is pretty well put but I'd like to add an extension to your first point because it's always the hardware forecast that's discussed but not the software one which to me is the more important.

Nintendo intends to sell 180M software this FY, a number that's pretty much always lower than the final result - and to reach that number, there definitely needs to be some heavy hitter software outside of TotK.

There are officially three possibilities -

1 - Regularly Scheduled Programming: Nintendo has games for the second half of the year and announces them in a summer direct as normal.

2 - Doomer Extravaganza: The Switch is winding down and, with little to announce, Nintendo does just one presentation later in the year, leaving a gap on the calendar in the late summer and fall.

3 - Stuck in the Middle With Coo (Raccoon) - Nintendo splits the difference and Tweets out a couple of things to hold them over during the summer and fall while waiting to do the later presentation. We never know what's going to happen and have little to go off of so we pretty much just torment each other in limbo for a few more months.

I'm going option 3 at the moment but would love to be proven wrong.

We've been over this, 2020 was due to COVID, E3 2021 we did have one, 2022 there was indeed no E3 but we didn't have a General then because we already had the second half revealed.
The back half could very well be remasters and smaller casual games that don't need summer general direct. Easily could be August or September with a shadow drop and quick marketing turn around.

Woah, I just realised that the Devolver Direct is just a few hours before the Grasshopper countdown finishes and Suda has a good relationship with Devolver and also a history of appearing during their Directs - could we see his next game there?

Not basing this on any evidence or anything other than raw gut feeling, but I don’t think I expect anything from Nintendo until September other than, at most, a Twitter announcement or two. I dunno, vibes are off to me.

@LukasManak22 we have another fellow here that needs to be shown the light, so that he may join us and become a Disciple of the Great Cause.

Seeing as the formally timed switch exclusive title monster hunter rise is getting a final digital event about its final update.
I think that I could expect pikmin 4 news in the next 1-2 week and then a proper direct in the 4th week of june

If a Regular-Ass Direct (RAD) is going to happen in June it’d be Tuesday June 13th at I think like noon Eastern

If it’s a Partner Showcase, it could be later in the month

As I thought, the new Nate the Hate episode is in fact about the PlayStation Showcase of last week, and not about the June General Direct and confirming Pikmin 5, TOTK 2 and Star Fox 64 4.

Have a watch though!

The text was originally "Nintendo Switch Has Game" and the trailer was your partner playing Zelda while you were sitting on the couch being ignored. The marketing focus group found the commercial too relatable so they changed it to Nintendo Switch Has Games.

Nintendo is not going to drop a direct until everyone in this thread has found every single korok seed in Tears of the Kingdom.

If they randomly drop a full trailer for Metroid Prime 4 this summer, I will forgive them for not having a full direct in June.

But that doesn't matter since we're 100% getting that direct.

Just a reminder that on June 13th it will be full 6 years since Metroid Prime 4 was announced, good thing we will finally see the game on June 15th.

we are so back

tbh I just kinda thought about Nintendo’s upcoming software lineup and while I’m stoked for Pikmin, having an upcoming software lineup of “just Pikmin” would have investor-types pissed

it just makes sense. A direct in June just makes sense

I'm going to be playing Zelda until checks playtime and amount of map covered the end of time, so if Pikmin 4 is the last game Nintendo ever makes, honestly, that's gravy

I wonder what this could be.

Cross quoting my post from the Hardware thread:
Well let's count Dragon Quest 3 HD2D Remake as one.
Then Team Asano will definitely have another game from one of it's "regular" series (either something Bravely or Triangle Strategy?)
Bamco has the Baten Kaitos Remasters ... though do they really count as 3rd party, iirc Nintendo has some hold on that?
Obligatory Sonic / Sega game.
I could see the Persona 3 Remake being on Switch, if it actually ends up being announced at the MS event in June (thus being multiplatform).
Maybe some of those rumored Konami "come back" games? Castlevania maybe?

E: Just noticed this is the Hardware thread. Wouldn't the quoted post be better suited in the Direct Speculation or the General thread?

This is pretty much why I think a mini is most likely. The vibe for a general just isn't there but it makes pretty much no sense to waltz into an investors meeting and say we just have Pikmin dated. And as much as I think a twitter/youtube drop of some small game or remaster is possible it's also not THAT possible lmao. It just doesn't happen now.

I'm team mid-June due to Investors end of month as well

We're due Booster Pass + ToTK DLC info at least, in addition to other service / pass titles getting updates

I really do wonder if Tears has DLC. I fear if they announce it anytime soon and put it up for purchase I will just insta buy instead of thinking clearly. I'm weak.

I trust the marketing geniuses at Nintendo (10m units of TotK sold in 3 days) and their strategy here is quite obvious:

  1. Go into the investors' meeting with only Pikmin 4 announced
  2. People are outraged due to the thin lineup
  3. Journalists write pieces about how Nintendo only has Pikmin 4 for the rest of the year
  4. People wonder what Pikmin 4 is so they google it
  5. ???
  6. Profit
