There are so many things Nintendo could do to make Switch owners happy that aren't new big games:

  • OS updates. An old request, but themes and proper folders would be a cool thing to have.
  • NSO updates. More retro games, themes rewards, modern games like PS Plus and Xbox Live... And a physical edition of NSO virtual console apps.
  • Nintendo Selects. Not only for cheaper prices, but also for reprints. It's imposible to find games like Arms, 1 2 Switch, Xenoblade 2, etc.
  • Ports. The Switch should be the definitive Nintendo console/platform, it needs more Gamecube, Wii and Wii U games.

At this point, I don’t think we’ll get any significant OS updates. Themes would’ve been great from the start.

Been wondering if these will come eventually for Switch. A line of cheap essentials - and some new Lite and OLED bundles that include them - could be a way they plan to continue shifting lots of hardware at this point? Feel like they must be at least planning to market the hell out of Mario games, blu-rays, toys and console bundles this Christmas. Let the kids have cheap Odyssey, New Soups and 3D World on the back of the movie.

All of these are less than a blip compared to what they need to do given their current sales targets and release schedule.

Unfortunately, the person who has leaked Persona games on the other forum (vetted by purple mods) had said that they have seen FF9 Remake and will not be coming to Switch.

To be fair, their track record has yet to be proved. And if you're putting any thought onto what they're saying, they also said that the project is at least 2 years off, so it could be on the next Nintendo console

The only positive, if true, is that it probably hints FF9 is getting a much bigger remake effort then some were anticipating.

As punishment for your failure, may your next Direct be a Partner Mini.
I already have the lineup :

Lichdom Battlemage (Cloud Ver)
Balan Wonderworld Demo (Cloud Ver)
Balan Wonderworld DLC : The Great Escape
Babylon Fall (Cloud Ver)
Final Fantasy : All The Bravest

New games releasing in the months between the release of Pikmin 4 and the end of the fiscal year would be a start.
I agree, I was just telling some nice extra things to improve, but definitely this shouldn't be a light year of game releases if they want to sell that much. May be lowering prices too?

I don't mind Partner Directs or whatever they're called, but I feel like it's kind of a dick move by Nintendo to do those to the third party partners. I haven't checked, but I'm sure that big Directs with first-party announcements draw more views and attention, and that's what those third party developers really want - to get the word out about their games to as many potential buyers as possible.

EDIT: Just looked - the Partner one from last summer has about half as many views as the full Direct from last September.

They are not vetted, Sony ain't moneyhatting a FF9 remake. And they say it's 2 years away, how could they "see" a game that's 2 years away? Total bullshit.

The most interesting parts of each direct for me are usually the first and last announcements. Not to say that headlines are bad, but I usually tune out a bit during those parts (except for Metroid Prime Remastered -- that was a big "WAIT WHAT?" moment). Anyways, the opener and closer get their own dedicated trailer instead of being crammed in with all the other headlines. They leave the biggest impact. I started thinking, which direct had the best opener/closer combo?

I gotta give this one to the September 2018 direct. Right out of the gate they opened with Luigi's Mansion 3, and then they ended with Animal Crossing, which was heavily requested at the time. While neither of those games came out until over a year later, they were exciting announcements for major franchises. With Smash Ultimate coming out only a few months after that direct, I felt like the switch was really entering its prime.

Looking back, it feels like some openers and closers were predictable. Smash character reveals took one of those spots a couple times, and more recently we had Tears of the Kingdom taking the closing spot in the past two directs. I think the next one will be a lot less predictable. We have some ideas, such as 2D Mario, Fire Emblem Genealogy Remake, Metroid Prime 4, Paper Mario Remaster, etc... but we don't know for sure exactly where these games will land on the calendar, and some of these aren't technically confirmed yet. I don't expect them to make the best direct ever at this point in the switch's life, but it seems like they have the tools to make a really solid showing... and that showing would be even better if it happens this month!

I think February 2019 opening with Super Mario Maker 2 and ending with Link's Awakening was amazing too.

The openers are not as good as they used to be, and it looks like Nintendo is well aware of this fact since they no longer start Directs with one of the biggest announcements of the show.

the gay famiboards logo is better than the normal one not just for it being gay but also being extra famicommy

I think they generally choose openers carefully, though. they tend to be "sooner than expected" type news. february had pikmin in july, september had a previously unannounced fire emblem in january, and february 2022 had fire emblem warriors in june. I feel confident that if we have a direct soon the opener will be the soonest first party game, probably whatever's coming in september.

That's a good observation that I hadn't really thought about before. The opener is usually a pretty big announcement for something coming fairly soon, while the closer is usually whatever they think the biggest announcement will be, but is usually a bit further out.

Maybe Nintendo really isn't releasing any Switch games in the second half of the year because they are finally releasing the N64 Classic Edition.

After playing TotK for more than 130 hours it really made me thought of what EPD Tokyo is up to (talking about 3D Mario). We have to wait for next-gen for this one but it's gonna be special.

Yeah, makes sense but it can be pretty random, how they opened with Overwatch of Monster Hunter DLC, Overwatch was really a wtf moment. In beginning of Switch era there was not really a opener at all. September 2021 could have opened with Kirby instead of MH DLC (which was further away) and February 2022 with Strikers instead of Three Hopes, but I understand that some games needs better deep dives than just a trailer (like Strikers got).

Remember that one time they had Overwatch as the opener? I think it was September 2019. Were people excited about that? I feel like that was one of their weaker openers.

Ha, I was just about to ask about the Overwatch opener. I think their more recent approach, with the Fire Emblem games as examples, has been better.

People had been wanting Overwatch on Switch for a while, but the direct announcement + release came at the same time as the Hong Kong stuff, so it sorta just fizzled out. Not to mention that Overwatch had been getting leaked by retail merchandise and stuff like that so it really wasn't as big of a surprise as it should have been.

Pikmin 4 reveal last September may be the most unexpected and "it's really happening?" moment for me in Directs in recent memory. Not counting stuff like TotK or Prime 4 which was longer ago.

You got Koizumi and he says we have special guest, says it's Miyamoto. Okay, he was there year before that he will for sure talk about Mario movie again, and he is, talks really briefly about it and theme parks, makes you think that he will show us first trailer, but not. Out of blue he starts how he wants to talk about Pikmin, how it's been over 20 years since the first game. Roller coaster of emotions. Okay, he shows Pikmin Bloom, and I was disappointed by this too at first (but that's mainly it's a mobile game in a Direct). You have living legend talking about how he enjoys his walking and proudly shows his stats. Way better than another sizzle-reel full of ports. At this point it's obvious that Pikmin 4 announcement will be just after this, he would not troll us like that, it was probably not even intention. Maybe they should switched order of first reveal of Pikmin 4 and then show Pikmin Bloom. Honestly the reveal was hilarious the same way it's first "reveal" to Eurogamer was.

Announcements like this makes Directs a Directs, no-one ever hinted or said anything about Pikmin 4, I was just talking about it nonstop in Summer on Fami with bunch of others until the last minute Direct aired, and it really felt like we manifested it.

This was one of the most memorable Direct reveals in close memory, the other notable ones from recent are Nintendo Switch Sports and Splatoon 3.

I've been talking about openers and closers, but moments like that in the middle of a direct are great too.

Another one that comes to mind is Metroid Dread. People had been talking about 2D Metroid, but nobody even considered that it would be Metroid Dread of all things. Pikmin 4 was definitely more of a surprise, though. It came completely out of nowhere.

February 2019 opening with Super Mario Maker 2 for a June release was top tier. Peak Direct as a whole, that one.

To be fair, Sunbreak was a huge expansion for Rise, ‘DLC’, while accurate, feels like underselling it a bit when there’s ‘DLC thats tiny pieces of content’ and ‘DLC that is bigger than some entire games’. It’s had a year of updates, I’ve put hundreds of hours into that alone, let alone the base game. Final update for it is next week.

Yeah, Sunbreak is an enormous, high quality expansion for one of Switch's most popular third party titles. No surprise Nintendo gave it a platform as a Direct opener.

Yeah I think it’s hard to oversell how important MonHun is to Nintendo’s portable crowd in Japan. If Capcom wants to talk about MH on a direct, they’ll let them.

Miyamoto explaining a year old app for 5 minutes and then showing us his new Pikmin shirt that isn't for sale was the most unhinged moment in an already unhinged direct.

After that and the Mario cast reveal in September 2021, I'm hoping this tradition continues.

There was a post earlier in this thread referencing a comment I made about gaming presentations not being entertaining anymore. I meant to reply to it but then forgot and just remembered now lol. Too lazy to go find it but anyway...

I actually don't miss most of the skits and the crazy non-game stuff from previous Directs all that much but I'm very much with @Raccoon in thinking that these presentations often feel cluttered with as many announcements as possible. The pacing is snappy, I guess, and I guess there's a higher chance of seeing something you're actually interested in. But I do miss the times when exciting announcements got a little bit of a mini-presentation within the Direct. The Star Fox Zero stuff at the beginning of the E3 2015 Digital Event is maybe a bit of a bad example because of the final product but I don't know. Shit felt like a big deal. If I want a series of trailers I can just put YouTube on autoplay. Seeing Miyamoto pop up to talk about Pikmin Bloom and then show Pikmin 4 was like remembering simpler times.
