StarTopic The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom |ST| Linkin' Parts (Please Tag All Spoilers)

84 hours later, credits are rolling.

Having finished it, I have a zillion words and superlatives to speak of, and yet - yet - I feel completely speechless.

After BotW, I felt like I would perhaps never experience that kind of video game magic again. When TotK was announced and confirmed that it would reuse the same overworld, I was starting to feel like games could never be better than that game for me.

Fast-forward four years and I’ve spent 84 hours with a world and an experience that has been even more magical, spellbinding, awe-inspiring and breathtaking as BotW, and I’m so, so grateful for it.

Thank you, EPD3.

Just found a special horse in the Hebra region and...

...damn this is one ugly horse. Zelda has some seriously Trumpian taste if she was seriously riding a horse this garishly golden.

Just had a fantastic session, going up and down on the Z axis and meeting a mini boss in both extremes - one of which was alright, and the other was amazing. Checked in on Tarrey Town and yes, same music again. But the town had some cool expansions.

Checked in on the Akkala Tech Institute - was hilarious. Did another skydiving challenge, was fun. Did one room in the factory and noped out cause too spooky - doing another one next session. Ascended straight from the Depths to a mountain in Hyrule. Heard the raindrops on the canvas of the paraglider. Greatly enjoyed the new combat tracks.

Tried to make a boat and failed twice. Building stuff isn't for me. Fortunately it can often be skipped.

So the warming up continues. It seems like they set out to make the ultimate adventure game. If the game keeps unfolding with its own fresh ideas they might convince me still.

but pls can I have a new town with killer music...? Lookout Landing is alright but I need some more JAMS

Do you not get a dot on the map for the master sword if you learn it's locaction from the memories? Liberating the Deku tree gave me a moving tracker on the map which made it easy to find. I've not even done half the geoglyphs yet.
Not sure, I did
The Deku Tree after getting the Master Sword. There was no dot, I just contextually figured out what to do when I saw the dragon was right there.
Yes you get a dot if you beat Phantom Ganon in the Deku Tree but don’t have the sword yet. That’s what happened to me last night.

Encountered the dreaded hands for the first time.

Ganondorf must have a sick sense of humor to place them and Phantom Ganon on a memorial site dedicated to the victims of the Calamity.

What a bastard!

Holy shit, this game, though.

  1. Wandering around, ignoring the main questline completely, because, you know, unlocking towers and going shrine hunting for those sweet spirit orbs lights of blessing is what I feel like doing right now.
  2. Oh shit, let's try to hunt down all those geoglyphs as well while I'm at it.
  3. ?
  4. Profit.

Also, if Nintendo made a Zelda spin-off that consisted solely of shrine puzzles, I would buy it, and I would play the shit out of it.

Edit: Also, I just noticed I wrote "shit" three times (now four), so take this:

It's just pure wanderlust at this stage. I've been approaching the Eldin region for the best part of three days.

I'm going to try to commit to Death Mountain tomorrow. Maybe.

They should have made korok seeds consumables so we could (not real spoiler)shoot poop arrows

I really hope there's more to the story than what the game basically tells you in only the 3rd and 4th memories.

Ganondorf takes stone, becomes Demon King. Zelda does Master Sword time shenanigans, becomes a dragon (which I assume is the dragon flying around the sky islands, and the Dragon Tears are literally her tears.)

Like that plot itself is fine (cool even), but what I really liked about this game is the entire story isn't dumped on you as soon as you finish the tutorial. Not knowing what was going on was great. I was trying to unveil the story gradually as I played the game by doing the memories in order but if the 3rd and 4th ones gave it all away that's kinda disappointing. Would have been a really cool reveal.

I am sure many of you know exactly the feeling of the 10-15 first hours of BotW. For me, they were among the best hours in my gaming history. But from there on, the game never reached those heights again, except for very specific moments. Not that I didn't enjoy the game: it was amazing and it's one of my all-time favorites.

But if I had to describe TotK in a few words, I would say this: TotK is the amplified and endeless version of the sensation I felt playing BotW for the first time. That's it. For 6 years I've been looking for something comparable to that without lucky, and the answer was, of course, in its sequel. If someone manages to top this experience again, it will be EPD3, that's for sure.

By the way, 42 hours in and I've just finished my first dungeon.

Two dungeons down, all memories done, which means I know I’m past the halfway point for my playthrough since I don’t think I’m going to 100% the shrines before ending. I could probably finish this weekend pretty easily at this point, but I’m not sure I want the game to end yet. I want to see the ending, but I feel like I’ll lose motivation to play once I have story closure. Man, what a game this is.

I beat my first
Phantom Ganon! It was a legit fight, I ate half my food that I had stored up lol. It was on the Great Plateau too for extra epicness.

Me: Ok, let's do my second dungeon today. Up Death Mountain I go.

Also me, but later: Spends hours doing random stuff around the region and barely starts the main Goron quest.

Oh, also

I got the Champion’s Tunic and you have to FARM THE LIGHT DRAGON to upgrade it. Like…really game? You’re gonna make me do THAT after everything you’ve shown me?

Literally the exact same spot. Got to a tower near there, then remembered I wanted to go see the big enemy on Hylia Bridge and teleported there. Then I did a bunch of other stuff around the bridge and forgot about the Gorons

I have acquired the full Mystic outfit and I am never changing outfits ever again.
Can you give a vague spoiler as to how I get it? :) Even just a "it's in Hebra," hint or something will do; spoiler tags ofc for other people.

EDIT: Question answered so disregard!

Pretty sure that one is:
From the Bubbul Gems, you trade them with a specific NPC.

Thanks! I've got a fair few of those gems, but I've got no idea where that NPC might be lol. I think an NPC mentioned it but I've clearly forgotten.

This game really does double as a horror game. I've never been that scared in the game ever. Just minding my own business lighting things up and suddenly I'm face to face with a giant beast that somehow snuck up on me.

I think you can start the quest by the Woodland Stable. Might be misremembering.

Lemme guess, it was a Frox.

I have all 4 dungeons done, 6 geoglyphs to find, and I've still barely scratched The Depths. For those who've finished the game, if I beeline the next story quest
the 5th sage
is there another major story quest between that and
defeat ganondorf
. Don't overly explain, just trying to get a rough idea of when I could finish the story.

Can't wait to get back to Hyrule after work today. Planning to do a bunch of sidequests for now, maybe try actually reaching Hateno this time

Was gonna do some main questing today but ended up wandering the underground. Got a nice little chain of Lightroots going south from the castle then swinging east through Necluda and up through Lanayru.

There is one dungeon that felt 100% like a traditional dungeon for me, even without the lock and key structure:

The Lightning Temple

I didn't find anything lacking here in terms of level design (I don't need the puzzles to be super challenging, they just need to be fun and elaborate) and its scale far outclasses previous Zelda titles. The sense of interconnectedness and lateral thinking is there as well. It's not the best or most challenging traditional style Zelda dungeon in the franchise but at least it's proof of concept that non-linear dungeons can scratch that itch for a traditional Zelda dungeon, at least in my case.

I think as long as Nintendo maintains the variety of dungeon design in TOTK going forward, I don't mind that being part of the template. I would prefer that they vary the dungeon framework as well, but what we have here is good.

In fact, I don't think I would want to go back to every dungeon being completely linear. I would prefer a mix of the two, so this dungeon has at least changed my mind a little bit on what I would prefer in terms of dungeon design. Still, all of the dungeons in this game offer incredible and unique experiences. I'm very impressed that Nintendo was able to pull this off!

Sucks that I won't be going along with most people but I think I'll take a break from this and video games in general for some time. I'm liking Tears but I'm feeling very overwhelmed and just going around feels like an authentic drag, almost like busywork.

The shrines are something that I didn't want to see in this sequel but the puzzles are great! Probably my favorite aspect of the game right now, the new abilities really are stellar.

Okay, the Depths are fun as hell

The whole place is a playground for building vehicles and cruising around, and clearing out enemy encampments is addicting, since that's where you can farm Zonaite to further your vehicle exploration. Collecting that stuff is pure dopamine.

It's like a separate game you can dip into for a session here and there before returning to the overworld. Super cool idea.

so i got to kakariko and was doing a bit of poking around the ring ruins. super annoyed that i’m not allowed to go to the floating one even if i try to sneak onto it from like a mile up but whatever. but i saw something interesting at the kakariko chasm.. spoilers i guess, but i’m sure others have seen this

i watched one of the dragons go down the chasm and into the depths. naturally my instinct was to follow it and see where it went, and i was able to chase after it for quite a ways down there before i got to a spot where i couldn’t progress any further because of all the gloom and i lost the dragon.

do the dragons regularly go down into the depths? has anyone successfully followed them and seen where the go? my guess is they’re on a loop and probably pop back up above ground somewhere else, but that’s a boring answer. it was so cool and it sparked my imagination at least! i wish i was able to follow it further.

This game must have a similar hidden XP system to Breath of the Wild because I feel like the enemies and their equipment all got stronger at once.
I assume it's based upon # of enemies killed like in the prior game. If so it just further support my opinion that everyone should do the temples in the recommended order (wind -> fire -> water -> lightning)

After my first 16ish hours I just played my first major boss and it blew me the eF away! I was like "WOAHHHHH!!!!" through the whole thing! It was so exciting! I can't think of one boss in any Zelda game that was as fun and as exciting as that. Honestly I feel like what ever bosses are left can't hold up to this one. I'm going to assume this one is going to be the peak and just see how the rest play out.

On that note, I get the first two, but using Impa/Geoglyphs as a guideline aren't the last two reversed? At least after telling you to go look at the glyph in Eldin, she then tells you to go look at the one in the Gerudo Highlands. Or am I missing another 'hint' to do the Zora area next?

This is the perfect game for using a stationary bike. Suddenly I'm sweating like crazy and look at the clock confused how 1 hour just passed and did 2 shrines and a cave

It's like a separate game you can dip into for a session here and there before returning to the overworld
On the other hand I feel like the depths are a tad too detached from the other areas. Part of that I guess is that there are considerably more options for taking to the skies. If you want to go underground you need to go to one of the chasms, and fast travel, and that’s it. The caves are also scratching my itch for exploring underground areas.

I only really go underground when I feel like I need more Zonaite, or if there’s a specific quest that needs me to be down there.

This game must have a similar hidden XP system to Breath of the Wild because I feel like the enemies and their equipment all got stronger at once.
There definitely seems to be something like that. Though this time it seems only a couple of enemies get upgraded while the rest stay the color they were. Which makes it more manageable.

I just want to say something about the side adventures/quests of this game:

. There is something so endearing about them, especially the Tarrey Town quest where you're helping Mattison. And all the additional objectives of the Hateno Mayoral election. It makes the world feel so lived in and fleshed out. 10/10 no notes

also if anyone still doesn't know how to lower your hood and wants to:

You have to complete the main Hateno quest and then talk to the clothes shop store owner

After finishing the game, best game ever etc, I also found something I sort of dislike (I have some things that I can criticize but actually sort of dislike) and that is quest rewards. I get that there’s a distinction - a cool idea - between side quests and side adventures, so you know what you get yourself into.

But I broke my back doing a side quest I Kakariko and got … a bunch of critters. Like, thanks. I could live with that, BotW has the same issue, but some of the larger quests and more grand adventures also had rewards that at least I personally found to be a bit of a dud.

Shit, I beat the Zora dungeon and forgot to pick up the Heart Container before triggering the end cutscene. Can I go back to it or do I have to reload a save

EDIT: Yep I could go back and get it. Honestly kind of weird you have to press A to pick up a Heart Container unlike the old games.

Now let's see if I fare any better against the miniboss in the Deku Tree[/ISPOILER} this time...
You absolutely wrecked your spoiler tag, you should fix that.

So after some mining, I finally have a few thousand rupees. Will I

A. Buy some actual armor since I've been rocking the cold clothing since I got it
B. Actually upgrade my clothing so I stop getting One-Shot by the Silver Enemies
C. Spend All of it on a Dream House because damnit I need the aesthetic.

C. The answer is C. I WILL build the perfect dream home, the kingdom can wait.

Can anyone help with a side adventure regarding godess statue and eyes?
im doing the side adventure at great plateau and i placed an eye near the statue in the depths but when i went to get another the first one i returned dissapeared… what is the intended way to return them so they all stay down there?

84 hours holy shit and I thought I was doing a lot playing for 50+ hours lol. I imagine though that's about where I'll end up when I hit credits at the rate I'm going... can't recall the last time I actually actively put off the critical path in a game because I was having so much fun exploring.

You absolutely wrecked your spoiler tag, you should fix that.
Dang I thought I fixed it. NOW it's fixed.

I bought arrows with my thousands of Rupees because somehow that's the resource I always run out of.

Question regarding an area of he game, is the depths really mostly empty? I seem to go long stretches down there where there’s not much to see/do other that take photos of statues and clear out camps. I have obtained Autobuild but that’s probably the most interesting thing I have come across.[\ispoiler]

Gibdos are chumps, what happened to them being able to stun and grab you? Now they just have the slowest attack imaginable. I literally just walked as slow as I could in front of a hoard of them, and they just can't hit you... this is so sad, one of the most intimidating enemies reduced to this. Which is especially a shame because their design is amazing. Making them insect like was such a weird direction, but it works.

I'm begging Zelda team to fill the difficulty gap between Lizalfos and Lynels, not everything has to be so weak. And I don't mean make them do more damage, because blue or black enemies if they catch you out can often one shot you, but that isn't fun. Every enemy basically can be stunlocked, which is the major issue imo. Just make enemies that are more aggressive and less likely to be knocked down.

Lol you say that now. Just wait til the
Thunder Temple boss fight
