So Grubb who's been parroting a PS showcase in late May (not sure how bold, like I'd have guessed June but is there precedent?) was right

...I still cannot comprehend how all of the following statements can be true
1.Nintendo will not host a direct this month or presumably anytime too soon (like not until August) if there's no rumblings
2.Nintendo aims to sell 15 million switches this FY, which, well called a reach, still in my eyes means
3.There will be no console revealed this calendar year

With console reveal next month off the table, and aiming to sell 15m and have something on the schedule... genuinely the only possibility besides a direct is a twitter drop, but the motives for that in the past don't apply, like a new 2d mario would do fine with a twitter drop but I think they would still prefer to give it a big showing

I don't know anymore, we'll see where the wind takes us I guess but I do feel firm that the FY estimate inherently excludes a console reveal this CY, though I'm sure the hardware thread will disagree with me
Grubb has had mixed (him claiming that Metroid Prime could've been a twitter drop for the holidays even in the fall has merit, given that it was shadow-dropped in a Direct 3 months later) rumors or downright gaffes ("Xbox Live will become free"), but the one thing he can be trusted on is presentation dates. His Summer Game's Mess reporting the past few years has been pretty good, and he got his start by standing by the 2020 Mini Direct happening even when it got incredibly down to the wire. If he hasn't heard of a June Direct by the end of the month, either Nintendo has leaks on complete lock or it's not happening

I seriously don't understand the pessimism. Do people really think that they're going to go two whole months without a dated first party game? That makes no sense.

The idea that Nintendo wouldn't hold a Direct or similar presentation where they announce first party games until September is frankly absurd, given the current situation. There are plausible scenarios where it doesn't happen in June, specifically, but they need to announce multiple games soon, to replenish their almost exhausted upcoming games lineup, and Directs are their typical venue for that.

With Tears of the Kingdom in my hand and Pikmin 4 on the horizon, I'm not so itching for a Direct right now.

That being said, I think we get one, or at least twitter drops but more than a mini. We still have Baiten Kaitos to be dated (and it could use more promotion), Nintendo's Holiday game, Splatoon 3 DLC, and at least 2-3 other games for the Fall. Plus third party deals. Generally Mini directs have game reveals lower on the totem pole.

Tears of the Kingdom is going to carry momentum for the Switch, but I don't think Nintendo want to be radio silent when they expect to sell 15 million units this FY. Mid June would be distant enough from Zelda that they can keep the ball rolling.

Thank you @LukasManak22 for your continued service to the belief that Nintendo will make an exciting new 2D Mario. At times the suggestion of another New Super Mario Bros game saddens me.
I think there is no way they would not at this point, but we will see next month how exactly it's gonna look. 2.5D like style ala 3D World theme is in the cards.

This discussion for me is the same as "they will port 8 Deluxe to new system and call it a day". No, they will not. Imagine a world when people don't want new Mario Kart because it would not have as many tracks as 8 Deluxe with Booster Course Pass. I said this many times but I am one of few people who believes that new Mario Kart is launching year 1 into new console. Imagine thinking EPD employees don't have any more innovation left in them lol, absolutely funny take to think they don't know what to do with Mario Kart next, especially Yabuki's team as said with his own words "If Miyamoto asked me what makes this unique and I don"t have an answer, am finished". Not to mention that we've yet to seen a Mario Kart running on anything other than Wii U tech ( 8 Deluxe is running on proprietary engine, not LunchPack) and that engine was just ported to Switch and game was bumped up to 1080p and still looks gorgeous to this day. One might imagine how great will Mario Kart look with 4K in mind and new engine (not LunchPack² but apparently ModuleSystem).

Y'know it'd be so weird if there was no Summer Direct because, "they don't have enough for it." The last General Direct literally only had one game announcement (Prime Remastered) and we're expecting more than one game to be announced in the Summer right? I was kinda dooming things the past few days just because everyone says it's possible, but it just makes no sense. If they were really gonna skip out on the Summer Direct, then we would've seen a few more game reveals back in February

Worst case scenario, we get a Mini in early July with a few first party port reveals. We're not getting anything less.

Grubb was like the first one to talk about a PlayStation Showcase coming months ago

  • Imagine you are Koizumi
  • hosting Directs ever since Switch era 2017
  • you are hosting a June Direct, finally announcing a new Mario game
  • but it's 2D Mario game and not the one you have been doing for years
  • He just reads the teleprompter and says "EPD10 shipped another 2D Mario game since 2019 and we need to wait for new hardware? sigh

With the announcement of Mortal Kombat 1 coming to Switch in September, I'm now confident that Nintendo will have at least some sort of presentation this summer in which Switch footage of MK1 will be shown for the first time.

It ain't much, but it is something.

I could see another partner showcase for June. Games like MK1 and Hogwarts Legacy make sense to show at something like that.

I had a similar thought, and if we get footage next week and the beta is in august (although is just for next-gen), they might want to get switch footage out.

They didn't show Switch footage of MK11 until like the week before launch
And almost everyone was like "Why did you wait so long? For a Switch port, it looks good!" So I hope they don't do a repeat of that.

With Mortal Kombat 11, they brought demos and stuff to different events.

It is possible that at gamescom they will let you try it, and we can see gameplays of the people who attended

Probably

But the point is Mortal Kombat is a weak indicator for Direct timing at best

I mean to an extent it may be exciting to be the headliner, though maybe stressful, I guess it depends on how confident they are in the launch, but I imagine BOTW devs felt much more pressure coming off the Wii U

“Ugh… fine. Here’s Maker 3 for all you sickos out there”

If there's a 2D Mario game, here's hoping they go for a less bland art style than the one of the New Super Mario Bros. games.

I mean, I will defend the Wii U game till the end. It's up there with Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World as far as I am concerned. But the art style is mostly boring.

The same goes for A Link Between Worlds. It feels like it's the most by-the-book art possible. I hope the next 2-D Zelda goes the Link Awakening's remake route and gives us something very unique.

I suspect that this new 2D Mario game is in development since 2018. You may ask, how? Mario Maker 2 shipped in June 2019. And that's right. But it needs to be say again that various past 2D Mario leads/designers are missing from Splatoon 3 credits, their last work being Octo Expansion in 2018. Maker 2 was released in June 2019, and these people who worked on Octo Expansion have not been just doing nothing the whole year and waiting until EPD10 is done with Maker 2.

They have been doing concepts/prototypes of this new 2D Mario game, once Maker 2 was released in June 2019 they begun working in full on this new 2D Mario, while Maker 2 was still getting content via 2 bigger updates (December 2019 and April 2020). Not to mention the hiring for this game which showed up in October 2019, which gives us a pretty good estimate on when things likely really started to go down.

Grubb hears things in similar ways and he seems to think we'll be getting shadow drops of some sort (whether it be Twitter or Minis) so I have to imagine he hasn't heard anything either.

Once we hit June and the rumbles are quiet that might paint a picture. They don't have a first party game in June but they do have an exclusive in Raincode, so twitter marketing makes sense. Pikmin 4 overview video? Of course.

I thought it was more the Animal Crossing team that shared staff with the Splatoon team, and 2D Mario shared staff with the Pikmin team.

But I also understand the EPD itself is basically a large pool of developers to which the various producers of each group can pull from for their respective projects.

He said that it was just speculation.
Well yeah speculation of a guy who typically knows things. If there was something he heard then he wouldn't have to clarify he was speculating lol.

We still have 3-4 weeks for the typical summer direct time period but these guys usually know this stuff by now. We shall see, though.

EPD 10 handle Pikmin and 2D Mario, but the games have different senior design staff/producers. EPD 5 handle Animal Crossing and Splatoon, but again the franchises have different senior design staff and producers. Being part of the same EPD group number doesn't mean the franchises are each handled by the same staff.

I remember that 11 had a presence on the reel of a direct.

I don't think it indicates anything about direct dates, but I have 0 doubts that MK1 will appear in a direct or any other event that happens between now and its launch, for pure marketing.

honestly, Grubb may be right with his speculation. He was kinda right last year tbh. Nintendo may just do small announcements here and there before some general direct. Would be unconventional since we have nothing dated for this fall and winter but they could get away with it depending on what they are releasing.

Nate, you're lucky everyone is playing Zelda right now. You almost sent this forum into Nintendoom mode.
Thanks to Zelda it'll probably be months before I even have the headspace to think about another game, so.. I mean.. maybe a Directless Summer would be a blessing? 😅

With the triple drop of Mario Advance maybe games aren't super slow like thought for NSO but just grouped more often, if so I can see like a remaining-Rare announce during a direct, or maybe like all the Pokemon stuff if we get lucky but the fact it wasn't at Feb makes me doubt in general

Didn't the rumblings of a Direct start in June last year? Mid June, even. It's still pretty early I think.
Yeah I'm really not even going to be thinking about it too much until mid-June. Basically once the Xbox show is over, then we can see where things sit. I don't see anything happening before that.

I mean the direct being then would work better for me but that direct was the 29th, historically their June directs (and main directs in general) are much earlier. I will admit Sep 2021 is a glaring exception so maybe it can be much later and still be not a partners but

Maybe as far as publicly teasing/implying but chatter was going on about a late June Direct in April of last yr.

Will see if things change on that front in the coming days/weeks.

It’s really hard for me to envision no June Direct. They conveniently dated all titles through July. A June direct would leave them a beautiful 2 months to introduce announcements for the rest of the year. I mean, I’m sure they can do Twitter drops for August and September games, mainly because I feel those will be remasters/remakes, but I just can’t see them waiting until Sept to announce titles that will be releasing 4-10 weeks later.

Imagine thinking there is no June Direct this year.

This year's situation is different than last year, it actually makes sense this year to be a full General. In July? No. That's Pikmin. In August? No, it would be too close to September one. I would argue that doing it in July would still be too close to September but this year's September Direct will be later in the month. It's gonna be June no matter what.

Nintendo is the king of doing the thing that seems the least logical though. A June direct seems like it should be nailed on but I'm braced for disappointment, would rather be pleasantly surprised by it.
