Still, console and game sales make up Nintendo's core business, accounting for more than 90% of the company's revenue. The Switch is now six years old, and Furukawa acknowledged there are uncertainties ahead. "In the history of our game console business, we have never seen 10 million units of hardware [still being sold] at this stage," he said. "We are now in unknown territory."

He also commented on the sales target for this year. "Given that recent year-on-year sales have been declining by more than 20%, the target of 15 million units ... is a bit of a stretch."

To offset the Switch's decline and get back on the growth track, many are calling on the company to introduce a new console.

One is rumored to be due out next year. "Development seems to be progressing well," a source close to Nintendo told Nikkei Asia. "But a product launch won't happen before next spring at the earliest."

Koizumi has been lying in wait, honing his skills and sharpening his blade on Mount Volbono.

But Aonuma has the higher ground, he released GOTG, then looked at Mario Odyssey and learned from it, and went to release GOTG again!

He can now also wait in the shadows to see what Koizumi's been cooking.

Furukawa this isn’t unknown. We know you have a switch 2 at the office. Just announce it!

Quick, someone look at his office shelf!

My predictions for the rest of the year.

  • Zelda ToTK Releases to praise and high sales.
  • No June direct of any kind
  • Pikmin 4 push in late June early July
  • August general direct ( Metroid Prime 4 trailer Spring 2024, remasters, 2d DKC/Mario)
  • January tease of next generation

The Annual Shareholders meeting will be on June 23rd, for instance the one in 2022 was one June 29th, the one in 2021 was also on June 29th and so on basically always it's late June, but this time a few days earlier.

My intitial theory was Pikmin 4 Direct month before launch, which is not a theory at this point but a fact so likely around June 21st but it makes better sense to have a General before that, to promote Pikmin, announce Pikmin Direct there. If they do Pikmin Direct before General that would be weird.

Do you think they can go into shareholders meeting on June 23rd with only - Pikmin 4 - July 21st and Prime 4 -TBA? My first reaction was no, but Nintendo don't care about these things, they can do Direct just week after earnings or literally day after that (like this year). But having literally only 2 titles in the pipeline (less than Wii U ever had) may seem concerning to investors, but again this is just shareholders meeting annual Q&A but still seems off to me.

So the conclusion to the story is that Direct is on June 14/15th, announce Pikmin Direct there to air week after that. Seems pretty good.

We’ve seen this song and dance. They go into investors meetings with a hundred games dated and they’ve gone into investor meetings with a few games. There’s nothing to theorize around investors meetings. Nintendo is so unpredictable. You’re better off following the one month prior pattern or any other patterns you have.

If the surprise is Astral Twain The Big Christmas Game starring Mark Twain and Shania Twain then I'm all for it.

By our powers combined:
Nintendo's gonna be June 14th or later, I think.
Edit - only just realising that this post doesn't say "Direct's gonna be June 14th or later"; oh well. I guess this means there's no Nintendo for another month at least. Everybody pack up and go home.

No Direct the rest of the year unless they have new hardware to tease.

You know that also means no chance to see Metroid Prime 4, yes? ;D

Not gonna lie, i would definitely check out a game where one protag is drunk and high on Absinthe, and the other high and mighty on voice.

But they never got into investor meeting with 2 games.

That's not how this works.

They need to announce and date more games before Pikmin 4 comes out to appease the shareholders. Worst case scenario is a Mini in early July.

Nintendo is getting out of the gaming business and going all in on NFTs, Nintendo Famicom Tokens.

Not massively convinced the next investor briefing is essential to Nintendo's announcement strategy, but it still helps to make mid-June look like the sweetspot for some announcements. A month clear of Zelda on one side, a month clear of Pikmin 4 on the other, creates a meaningful lead-in period for games coming in late August through to the end of the calendar year, and a few days at least before the investor briefing.

Hopefully it's also a good window for the first proper showing of Metroid Prime 4...

I didn't want to say this because it's one of these hopium predictions but is there a chance that they could announce Nintendo 2 in this Direct?

Not even September?

So Nintendo is finally calling a Backlog Year. Bout damn time.
Hello everyone. I'm Shinya Takahashi, and I'm responsible for development at Nintendo. Thank you so much for playing Nintendo games.

I wanted to speak with you today to give you an update on your backlog that you've been building since March 2017.

We deeply understand the high anticipation that Nintendo fans have for new Nintendo games. We have felt it especially from the passionate words from fans we heard when it became clear that we wouldn't have a Nintendo Direct in June. Ever since you pre-ordered the The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom game despite having two games still shrinkwrapped, we've been wanting to give you an update.

As a result of your continued failure to play the games you bought at launch for the full price - although this is very regrettable - we have to let you know that your current backlog progress has not reached the standards we expect from Nintendo fans.

Nintendo always strives for the highest quality in our games and we expect our fans to honour that work by playing our games. If we're not satisfied with our customer's progress, we aren't able to deliver new games that will live up to their expectations.

From this perspective, we have determined that the current state of Nintendo announcements is appropriate and we had to make the difficult decision as a publisher. We have decided to reexamine our announcement schedule itself and change it. Specifically, we have decided to not announce any new games until our customers' backlog progress has reached a level that meets our expectations.

We did not make this decision lightly.

This will essentially mean no new game announcements, so their releases will be delayed from our initial internal plans.

We strongly recognize that this will come as a disappointment to the many Nintendo fans who have been looking forward to the next Nintendo Direct. I'd like to extend my deepest, heart-felt apologies to everyone. It will be a long road until he next time we will be able to update you in a new Nintendo Direct. However, we will continue developing games so that when you have finished your backlog, we will be able to show them to you.

On behalf of Nintendo, I sincerely appreciate your understanding. Thank you very much.

OKAY FINE I FELT PRESSURED

August Direct
Metroid Prime 4 - November 3rd
Metroid Prime Sequel Duo Pack (Echoes and Corruption) - Shadowdropped, physical release two weeks later
(plus they got the full treatment like MP1)
Paper Mario: TTYD Remaster - September 22nd
F-Zero GX Remaster - October 13th
The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker & Twilight Princess Duo Pack - November 17th
METROID PRIME 5 and METROID VI - December 25th

Low-key getting the vibe that they really are just gonna coast on remasters, DLC, Pikmin and Zelda for the rest of the year and not much else

Hope I'm wrong

We're a whopping 9 days into May and haven't heard anything yet. I think it's now safe to say that Nintendo has no new hardware, software, or announcements to either end for the rest of the decade.

June- Mario Kart 8 Wave 5
July- Pikmin 4
August- F-Zero GX HD
September- Random new IP. IDK at this point lol
October- Paper Mario TTYD HD
November- Mario Kart 8 Wave 6 / Metroid Prime 4
December- Pokémon S&V DLC

All subject to change. I don't expect WW/TP this fall.

NGL, I’ve often thought how cool an action game with Ganondorf as the PC would be. Lore-heavy and exploring how growing up as the sole male Gerudo in the tribe and being a sort of a god king, excluded yet revered, only due to gender, influenced his character into becoming the villain we know him as. I think it could be very interesting if done right.

Bah. I was hoping to replay 2 and 3 in this fiscal year. Remastered which I finished yesterday was such a treat.

Nintendo still hasn't released a multiplayer focused game in 2023, so I expect one of those in H2 (2D Mario would work). We also need another casual focused title, a party game or something like Switch Sports/Clubhouse Games, so we'll get one of those as well. Nintendo isn't going to rely on just remasters for the rest of 2023 lol

Is Baten Katios 1 and 2 HD not casual enough?

How about a remaster of a multiplayer game? 4 swords adventures?

Edit: Would be for 2024 my bad, reading is hard
