yā€™wanna know why this is funny?
do you wanna know why this is funny?
do you want to know why this is really funny?

because

nothing happens after he says it

I don't think we'll have to wait too long for the Direct. With the current event horizon in place, I think Pikmin 4's release date is a hard limit for when the summer Direct/presentation will happen, with June being most likely. Nintendo probably doesn't want to actually run out of dated games.

This was the year where I was finally going to let go of the possibility of a June Direct. I've been thinking that no E3 = no June Direct and I don't want to be disappointed again.

But damn it... your points are too reasonable. Fine. I'll jump back on the June General Direct hype train, but I'm definitely not as confident as I was last year.

Hard to predict at the moment for what games are to be announced, but probably more ā€œremastersā€, Dragon Quest 3 remake and 12. Super Mario RPG remake (obviously)! And most likely some late ports. Something Kirby, and of course a new Donkey Kong game and 2D Mario!

Also, a general note on hardware release time-frames that I think people would do well to factor in to their speculation: Nintendo doesn't usually do spring hardware releases unless something goes wrong. I believe the gigaleak provides confirmation that this is exactly what happened with the Switch, with the system getting delayed out of 2016 to ensure games would be ready. Just because the Switch ultimately released in Spring doesn't mean Nintendo is eager to repeat that.

for some reason I want to say sonic adventure 2
this is the best answer out of all the answers given

timestamped

I would like to point out (since this overall scene gets gnarly) that my initial post was to suggest our vibe will be "tense room full of people witnessing screens being completely overtaken by the message 'You shall be as gods'" and not "whole ship full of people blows the fuck up" šŸ¤£

although the latter may end up being more accurate, we'll see

I think most people who believe in H1 2024 believe that something already has gone wrong due to the current circumstances

...is this the Regal Cinemas opening?
Very much so.

And if I'm not mistaken, it's the one I used to always chuckle at because of the sharp emphasis the VO placed on the word "trash."

Yup. You can keep your Nicole Kidman, AMC, there's nothing like the first few Regal roller coaster opening cinematics.
I was at a movie once where everyone in the theater threw their hands up and swayed left to right, hooting and hollering along with the turns and dips like they were on an actual roller coaster. A few people screamed when the one big piece of popcorn went off.

Was fuckin fantastic.

Perhaps some do, but I do get the vibe that there's a fair bit of recency bias speaking as well. It's fairly understandable that could be happening when you have infrequent events, the most recent of which was an outlier.

- new hardware is not coming out this year, that's pretty obvious now. If you still believe it does, that's fine, but you will be a damn disappointed.

- at earnings someone will ask about hardware and they will just say "we are always working on it, nothing to announce at this time", they will talk about how Mario Movie is doing great, "definitely more movie projects in the future". Earnings are just 3 days before TotK so the idea that they will say something significant about new hardware (ala launch window etc.) is kinda funny. Remember that Nintendo could have made the earnings late April or one week prior but they did not, pretty much speaks for itself that hardware news will be non-existent aside from one investor who will bring it up.

- Direct in mid June, Pikmin 4, Prime 4 shown, also 2D Mario for October along with things like Detective Pikachu, that Good-Feel Goemon like game, Side Order and maybe some smaller spinoffs ala Tomodachi to squeze the casual market for one last time. When you add things like last Mario Kart waves, Pokemon DLC and potentially Zelda DLC to close the year it's not bad lineup at all, especially when your top million seller releases next week.

- as you figured the "No 2H titles = hardware" theory will be dead.

- Pikmin 4 Direct month before launch, hosted by Miyamoto.

And as for that 2D Mario game I mentioned:

New. Super Mario Bros. Wii announcement at E3 2009 - November 2009 release.
New Super Mario Bros. 2 announcement in April 2012 - July 2012 release.
New. Super Mario Bros. U announcement at E3 2012 - November 2012 release (altough this one is tied to hardware launch/reveal). "The prototype NSMB Mii. was shown at E3 2011".
Super Mario Maker 2 announcement in February 2019 - June 2019 release.

So for most 2D Mario games, (apart from only DS and Maker Wii U) 4-5months from reveal to release at maximum. They are just waiting for TotK to be released to announce this, not to mention the whole former 2D Mario guys + bunch of other Splatoon 2/Octo Expansion designers missing from Splatoon 3.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

This is the most boring thing that could have been posted in this thread

Here's a thread that might be more suited for you

The new DK game has to come at some point too.

We have a 2D Mario game and 2D DK game most likely. One has to come this holiday in my mind.

I'll guess that the next direct will somewhere in mid-late June. Gives TotK a wide berth, and will fall in the lull ahead of Pikmin 4 releasing. Plus allows them to run a final trailer for Pikmin 4, and give it additional direct coverage, before it launches.

As far as the 2nd half of the year, I'm guessing it will be smaller stuff like the alleged F-Zero remaster, and/or maybe a crossover/mainstream title like 2D Mario/DK, as they start to stockpile major releases for new hardware in the coming 12-18 months.

New Star Fox please.
We have a few reasons to at least entertain the possibility that one is coming.

First, the inclusion of some Star Fox assets in Nintendo Switch Sports. Could be test assets, but could be vestigial.

Second,

If they did return to Star Fox, I'd love to see them commit to the idea of serialized storytelling. I would love to see the game released in episodes of highly replayable classic campaigns over the course of a year or two.

Nintendo always has big first party games for Q4, it's the one pattern with them you can actually count on. It's exciting to know that this year's will either be A) Metroid Prime 4 or B) something we haven't heard about yet. Bring it on!

2022 - Pokemon Scarlet / Violet (November)
2021 - Metroid Dread (October), Pokemon Brilliant Diamond / Shining Pearl (November)
2020 - Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity (November)
2019 - Luigi's Mansion 3 (October), Pokemon Sword / Shield (November)
2018 - Pokemon Let's Go (November), SSB: Ultimate (December)
2017 - Super Mario Odyssey (October), Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (December)

One day I will have advance knowledge of a Direct date since my game will be shown in it.

But it is not this day.

And it'll probably be an indie world if I'm lucky enough to get anything tbh

Do we think we will actually get a new 2D Mario this holidayish?

Also do we think a June direct is happening? :p
Yes and Yes. A 2D Mario has been in development for years. And Nintendo likes to do a short announcement to release, which works well for a June announcement and release in November

Glad to see the thread is out. I wonā€™t be feeling the need for direct for about a month til Iā€™m done digging into TOTK, but the situation weā€™re in right now is too interesting to not have the NDS thread to speculate in.

June Directā€¦ idk. It really has seemed like ā€œNo E3=No directā€ from Nintendo, but likeā€¦ SOMETHING has to happen.

Anyone who knows my opinions on here at all knows Iā€™ve hated the switch pro/2 discussion and think it came way to soon. But now I feel like weā€™re finally almost there. The second half is too much of a mystery, and the first half has been really aggressive. Those are at odds, so somethings up.

2D Mario

"Doing this now at the 30th anniversary [of Super Mario Bros.] is really putting some more of that creativity into the players. But at the same time, we as the developers feel that itā€™s time for us to move in a new direction, and weā€™re preparing to work on the future of Super Mario from here on." - Miyamoto, 2015.

ā€œWe will continue to make 3D and 2D Mario games, but I want to make one that even exceeds New Super Mario Bros.ā€ - Takashi Tezuka, 2015.

Will we ever see a 2D game made entirely of Kotabeā€™s art?

Weā€™re at almost like a turning point. When you look at Mickey Mouse there is the classic Mickey Mouse, and then there is the modern Mickey Mouse and the classic one has a lot of flavor to it and the modern Mickey Mouse looks really great, but it is losing a little bit of the flavor, and thatā€™s something we discuss to make sure we keep that intact as weā€™re creating characters. And of course the development team for any Mario game may want to use Kotabeā€™s art, but there is also a character-development team thatā€™s really working hard to create new styles and new work. Once they get more work done, I think more and more of that will be reflected into games.

And you feel like the pristine, perfect flavor for 2D Mario is that beautiful, clean Kotabe art?

I do believe that Mr Kotabeā€™s art has become kind of a standard within Nintendo, but we definitely want to continue to see if we can evolve that as time goes by.

- Miyamoto, 2017

Whatever this new 2D Mario game is, I can assure you that it's not another New Super Mario Bros. game, which at this point isn't that bold prediction at all.

holy monty moly! I have never seen this interview before, woahhh

Nintendo has already established a pretty strong future marketing presence in the summer with Nintendo Live happening in August and then returning to Gamescom after four years in September. It's likely they'll have some kind of software slate they'll want to show off by this time, especially if they are choosing to do these events after pulling out of E3.

All aboard the hype train CHOO CHOO
Looking forward to see how this thread will go off the rails this time. XD

This is genuinely a direct I'm very curious about, because I can't think of any new game other than Mario and Pikmin, so I'm really curious what Ninty will have in store for us!

The reason last June Direct was a Partner is that they had contracts with 3rd parties and everything else 1st party wise was already known. We know literally nothing after Pikmin so June it is, GENERAL June.

I know weā€™ve had to repeat this multiple times lol, but itā€™s good to be said in this new topic. This years scenario is not equivalent to last year. It is not equivalent to 2020. Itā€™s different

Yeah, it got to the point that after June Partner trauma people are somehow thinking that every other Direct will be a Partner, most notably September 2022 because Emily said the air time will be different than usual (which it was). We aren't getting Partners for a while, same for Mini.
