Pre-Release Metroid Prime 4: Pre-Release Discussion Thread

Surprised fami is Surprised that AAA game development takes a very long time
It's more that it's just fun to casually joke about. I'm not actually worried. I'll wait as long as it takes, and the time it's spent in development since the reboot seems in line with other AAA games.

For me, the silver lining to the long wait for Metroid Prime 4 has always been just knowing we're eventually getting it. It's that simple. Imagine how much worse it'd be if we figured we were just never gonna see another Metroid Prime game, or even another 3D Metroid game at all. We'd probably still be operating under the assumption that Other M and Federation Force poisoned the well enough to make Nintendo believe 3D Metroid just wasn't worth the time, effort, monetary investment, and potential fan backlash. The only thing that would've reignited our hopes is Prime Remastered, which is still a super recent thing (and even then, the idea of its existence at all was a running joke for several years).

Bottom line: waiting on something you know is eventually coming is a hell of a lot easier to work with than total uncertainty. Trust the process.

I pre-ordered Prime 4 in 2017 from Best Buy.

I'm riding and dying this shit to the ends of the earth.

Metroid Prime 4 has been the most difficult wait for a game I've ever experienced in 30+ years of playing, but that's because it's the next entry in my all time favorite series that hasn't had a game in over 15 years, being made by my favorite developer who they themselves have not released a wholly new game in going on 10 years now. I know this is absolutely ridiculous but if MP4 isn't at least my fourth favorite game of all time (the other three being the first three) it will be a disappointment to me.

But I have nothing but praise for the way Nintendo has handled Metroid starting with Samus Returns. They have been working really hard over the last almost decade now to get Metroid back into the best position it can be in. Imagine if BN's Prime 4 released and was a disappointment. It may have marked the end of the Prime series. But nope, they're making sure it's good, even though its been so, so long. And we somehow, incredibly, got Dread after two failed attempts and nearly two decades later. I've beat it 6 times. And we just got the absolutely beautiful Prime HD. I'm not sure if they could have handled things any better. And now surely we're closing in on the unveiling and eventual release of Prime 4... Things are looking good, even though the wait has been brutal. Now we just need Prime 4 to be awesome.

I trust the process!

Don't mind me, I'll be sitting here saying "Trust the process" over and over again until Metroid Prime 4 surfaces or I no-clip through the Earth.

I'm still sticking with my holiday 2023 bet but I've already added a baby Metroid to my avatar just in case and will have no qualms about changing to it if need be.

Be it this holiday or holiday 2024, I just NEED to see it. Please, show this game next month Nintendo.

As long as it's up for preorder before May next year so I can use my voucher on it

I still believe next time they are showing it they will give solid release date, I am not rulling Holiday 2023 just yet. But they are showing in June and releasing in March, they can announce release date 8-9 months in advance, as with Zelda or Animal Crossing to be super confident in that hitting it.

I feel like the Metroid Prime Remastered shadowdrop wouldn't have happened if Retro wasn't super confident about Prime 4 releasing soon. If we were still a ways out, Remastered probably would have been announced in February and given a summer release date or something.

Yeah, I feel the same way. If it was planned as a holiday 2024 game, I believe Nintendo would've released MPR this holiday. Shadowdropping and getting it out of the way in February to me means it's still this FY.

We’ve already heard from Nate he’s expecting Metroid Prime 4 releasing by the end of the FY (March 2024) the latest.

We’ll see it this summer. Then we’ll see it later in the year and one more time early 2024 if it’s coming out in March.

that was based on gut feeling, not from actual info he has heard. he made it pretty clear when he's talking about stuff he has heard about and what is his opinions

I simply have to ignore this or I’ll spiral.

I need this to be revealed this year

😭
I wouldn't get too worried, it's pretty standard to hire throughout production and I have a feeling this won't be one of those games that Ninty sits on for an age

With that said I am also the opinion of seeing prime 4 again before the end of the year

Doesn't mean they are lying. Things change, it happens more than you think.

I mean, of course anything is possible. I just have a hard time imagining Nintendo not releasing one of the most costly games they've ever produced to 130 million players. Switch 2's are going to be hard to come by for the first couple years. Imagine being a Metroid fan waiting all these years and having no way to Prime 4. That would be awfully cruel of Nintendo to do that.

This feels like a major troll post, lol

It's... obviously intriguing to look at his resume, but I don't know if we can infer anything from his resume.

It would be such a massive departure that it seems very unlikely.

(This guy has only worked on MMOs outside of his time with Unity)

What, are we supposed to be concerned that he worked for "Bugthesda" or something? Obviously he'll have craploads of fantastic engineers working under him. IMO it's good that they didn't take too long to find a replacement for Tim Little.

I feel like posting this specific person is just trying to be a little cheeky as his entire experience is

1. MMOs
2. Unity

Which could lead to the implication that Prime 4 could have MMO elements which I find very unlikely.

Prime 4 is four and half years into development. Their tech for the game has been established years ago at this point haha.

I don't see how the person's account is supposed to hint at anything bad. he has a lot of experience and we should know that previous games don't inform their current work. did we forget the "Naughty Dog artist working on DK is a dream come true" stuff already?

People don't actually think like this

Sadly I do think a lot of people think this way. I've seen over the past years Nintentubers talk about Retro's hirings of folks that have worked on COD and Crysis for example and conclude that the game will have a more realistic artstyle or have multiplayer. It's crazy that they don't understand that the person is hired to serve the studio's needs and may be required to adapt their style. They're not being hired to drastically change the essence of the studio itself.

Been thinking about this game for a minute today and what it needs marketing- and game-wise to set the Metroid franchise on the path of success. Some thoughts:

1. It will be developed for the Switch, released on the Switch and it will be the better for it. By the time this comes out (which is holiday 2023 at the earliest) the Switch will have a 130+ million user base. Now more than ever anyone who hears the faintest thing about this game has an easy way to get into the Metroid franchise as essentially everyone already has access to the console.

2. Make a big deal out of it similar to Mario and Zelda. Remember when Retro devs were sent out to the past gaming awards thing by Keighley and revealed Cranky Kong? Yeah, do that but actually with a 3D Metroid. Send the devs out to do interviews with media, create expressive demo events and give the game one big, well-crafted trailer that sells the game by itself.

4. Actual, memorable, well-designed characters. I think this is one of those smaller things that has extremely huge impact and the one thing that always cratered Metroid's appeal. That the second best "character" in the series is a generic purple dragon is the opposite of a compliment. It's literally the Samus show. Everything else always looked as generic as it comes - space pirates, chozo, space federation, dark Samus and so on. No one other than the extreme diehards remember who they are or how they look. Raven Beak should pave the way here with an immediately recognizable character design that simulatenously markets your game and makes your game more memorable. Create multiple distinct, stand-out character designs like Raven Beak that you can show off in marketing even through something rather trivial like concept art. And like with Raven Beak, they still can still be part of the chozo, space pirates, space federation or whatever. They don't need to say much more than your typical chozo interaction in Metroid Prime 2. The focus, though, should rather be on the actual characters, characters designs and character interactions that stand out and are immediately memorable.

5. Some customization aspect. Think of it like how you can really customize the look of your lightsaber in the Star Wars Jedi games only with Samus' arm canon. Similarly, and while it is a first-person game, more customizable armour to go along with it. Maybe even being able to customize the look of your laser beams. Super Mario Odyssey has really shown that even just purely cosmetic customization is enough to make your game way more appealing.

6. More optional, missable content in general. This would also tie-in with the previous point as more things to unlock and find would naturally mean more optional, missable places to discover. Meaning more substantial branching pathways that lead to more involved sequences than at best an optional room with a health/rocket upgrade hidden behind a destroyable wall. Exploration and pathfinding is the essence of Metroid already so this isn't really about that, but rather about the world feeling small and unadventurous when everything the game has to offer can be experienced by just mainlining it. Make it feel bigger.

7. High critical reception. That one is more obvious but probably the one I have the least worries about as Metroid has never been not critically acclaimed.

Hopefully we'll see it soon. Hell, maybe even next week.
