Pre-Release The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Pre-Release Discussion Thread

The Kotaku leak article is published by the same Senior Producer who had tweeted about it being unprofessional and coercive of Nintendo to blacklist them

I was going to say that someone should forward that staff member that article but I guess they don't need to then

The Kotaku situation is pretty messy and I'm not sure this is the right thread to discuss it but it comes off as a bit petty from Nintendo to blacklist them for the Metroid Dread article that was quickly edited to remove the implicit (but perhaps unintentional) endorsement of piracy. But this is the sad reality of access journalism which so much of gaming journalism relies on.

I mean they said "Thank God for pirates, emulators, modders, and hackers." It's pretty cut and dry to me. Not to mention this being the guy who complained about not getting a preview seems far more petty to me

Also cheering companies blacklisting outlets and impeding reviews coming out on time makes me a bit nauseous.

Ok topic change.

Someone talk me out of actively considering getting these vouchers for the first time ever to also get TotK digitally ... on top of the physical CE ...
Can't help you there bud, after the last time my delivery was late I ended up getting the vouchers for Dread. Sorely tempted to not risk that happening again. Still haven't forgiven mynintendouk for that fuck up

I'll be doing the same so you have a vote of confidence from... Oh er, guess I am not helping.

Let me try again.

That's so wasteful, it's not like we are about to play the GOTG or anything....

Sorry, I got nothing.

Considering Splatoon 3 for extra voucher game.

But am I safe from spoilers even there?

edit: I probably am.

But this is the level of caution I now sit at, haha.

That's...kinda waste of money is it not? You never know, you might get your physical game a day early if you're lucky.

I did...
I KNOW my collectors edition won't show up on time and I took my Friday off for TotK.

Someone suggested a few pages back to create a thread where people that have played the game could give general impressions without spoilers. I'd love that, but I agree that people have different threshold as to what constitutes a spoiler so it could be difficult to manage such a thread.

Yeah these next 10 days are going to be long.
That was me, will I make it now? Never made a thread before

Not to pile on Kotaku, but I can already see the "Actually, Zelda: the Wand of Gamelon is better than Totk, here's why"

Y'all are as helpful as fusing a slice of meat to an arrow. ._.

I mean ... yeah, of course it is.

Though, i think ... but not sure, that i have a 50€ eShop Gift Card somewhere at home that my friends got me for birthday last year.
So it would be ... half-wasteful?

some reviewers (and players for that matter) will have a tough time getting over the usage of the old Hyrule map and other returning (now less novel) elements

Yes that's me. BOTW was mindblowing for what it did in 2017. TOTK seems more incremental to me.
The spoilers have at least convinced me to buy the game on release and alleviated some of my doubts, but I still do not imagine myself being as invested in this as I was in BOTW.

On the one hand I, too, am willing to drop the Kotaku blacklist argument. On the other hand, I can't believe no one has made the joke that TOTK stands for Tears of the Kotaku (maybe someone has, but hey, there are a lot of pages in this thread)

With the information we now have about the world, nothing.

GOW was a game with a strong focus on its narrative versus its map, traversal, exploration. It makes sense, IMO, that outlets (and players) would be more critical of TOTK reusing a map vs GOW Ragnarok doing it.

Yeah and I’m saying that there’s enough new content for that not to be a major criticism

I keep getting voice messages from my brother doing his worst Zelda impression saying "Link... you must find me"

I hate it here

Buy something your brother absolutely wants, make a video of it, and put in the voice line:

"Do not look away. You witness a kings revival."

Absolute clown behavior lol

I think these two things are connected, sadly. Gaming journalism (and I was part of it for years) tends to be juvenile and almost always repetitive beyond the bigger outlets. Kotaku's coverage is ultimately insignificant to Nintendo when they display some of the documented journalistic amateurism that's rampant at other, lesser known outlets. Call it a faux-pas or mistake, but @totofogo pointed out how easy is to see personal grievances spill into journalistic practices.

And this isn't unique to these kind of petty spites in gaming either. I remember Jason Schrier publishing this piece in 2015 (at Kotaku, hilariously enough) about how Metacritic scores shape company contracts, bonuses, and industry measurements of success. There's so much wrong with tying employee livelihood to review scores, yet it was (and perhaps still is) a practice at some of the biggest gaming companies. We have some extremely rotten practices in gaming, and stuff like Kotaku's article (and the Hollywood writer's strike) reminds me how far we have to go before we begin to understand how flimsy and unsustainable it is.

For some odd reason I have always wanted to play ”Tag” with a group of friends on BotWs map. Like 15 players at a time. You would be able see everyone’s icon on the map as they moved around. No one could die but shooting a player would slow them down enough to where you could catch them and tag them.
Have you seen the Super Mario Odyssey multiplayer mod? A bunch of YouTubers play hide and seek using it. It's sick

Kotaku reaped what they sowed. Advocating piracy for a game that came out the same week, in a series that historically doesn't have great sales, is disgusting.

Yuuuuuuuup. Zero sympathy for them in these (and many other) situations

This... is going to be a long few days. Can't really tell at this point if there really are spoilers everywhere I look or if it just feels that way because I want so badly to look lol.

Pretty sure there was a law passed somewhere that explicitly states there is no budget when it comes to Zelda, hence why I have physical, digital, amiibo, carrying case and pro controller coming. The Gods have not been kind to me in my quest for a CE sadly.

Almost a bit late, but i just ordered mine. I thought i wouldn't be able to!

If you're not working that friday then i think digital is the only way to go for a Zelda game. Theres too many external factors in getting physical where deliver could be delayed or something like that. Only way i'd do physical is if i was guaranteed a copy at midnight. Even then, you could already be home playing while you would be out waiting for your copy if you went physical

It’s gonna be a little bittersweet when this thread closes, it was the first one I made for Famiboards (brought over from the one I made for resetera), and has been a fixture on the front page since then. I’m sure the new ST will pretty cleanly take its place for a while, but still it feels like the end of an era.

Does anyone else have an Amazon preorder of the CE that says it's arriving May 16th? I'm picking up my own copy in-store at Best Buy, but I nabbed another on Amazon as an early b-day gift for my little brother. Was hoping we could play it at the same time together on release day but it's looking like that might not happen now. I also got the Pro Controller through Amazon which says it's coming the 15th, but I don't really care if that one comes late tbh
