Pre-Release The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Pre-Release Discussion Thread

In gameplay video we don't see the upward facing position when skydiving in action but more significantly we don't see the button to activate such mode (that we know we will have from patents) in the HUD

So the gameplay it's definetly edited and crafted to hide things
Reminder that just because something is in a patent that doesn't mean it has to be in the final game.

Also even if it is in there's no guarantee that it's a starting ability.

I would be shocked if skydiving combat isn't a thing.

It's a perfect feature to integrate into a part of the game that is bound to have varying degrees of downtime where you can fill the gaps with "things to do".

Rewatching, I noticed something. The right button on the D-Pad alternates between bows and weapons depending on what weapon he holds. Previously, in BotW, you had moments where you had to go into the menu to change bows. This is a significant QoL improvement that is highly welcome. Not to mention having materials on a slider, too. I'm glad these changes have been made. The less menus, the better.

Though, it does make me wonder, how will we change abilities? The L button is for using them, right? It would make sense to use the down button on the D-pad for it. Using it to call upon horses feels like quite an excessive feature in comparison.

I think we do actually see the upward position, after the knockback state it transitions to him falling backwards, then he flips forward a few frames later.

@Irene that dpad menu is already in BotW any time he's holding a bow. BotW also has also an arrow quick select, but it seems that this game has done away with arrow types in favour of the attach system.

One simple thing that points to this Hyrule being more developed than before, and that actually mattering to the game:

The previous game was called Breath of the Wild and focused on wild spaces

This game is called Tears of the Kingdom

Are we just speculating that because it will be a month before the game comes out, or is there something else indicating this?
Yeah, it's a month. I don't see doing the actual trailer 3 weeks or closer to release, that would not happen and won't make any sense. Not to mention that reviewers will get the game either very late April or early May. Nintendo games get their Directs month before release, TotK will get it's final trailer in that time.

There are also rumours of the Germany event happening in a week and a half.

There was some talk about German streamer being invited to some sort of event yes, it would line up with the timeline. It's possible that Nintendo will let press play the small portion of the game before they will ship the review copies to them. Not sure if this is stable for Nintendo releases but I think it happens quite often, last example I could think of is Splatoon 3 when they invited press to play it (and even to NOE headquarters), it was roughly 20 days before it was released and at the same time they did Splatoon 3 Treehouse in which they showed more of the gameplay from singleplayer and even some levels that press haven't played.

What I think will happen is another video with Aonuma or another member of the staff playing the portion that press would probably play and releasing final trailer. Altough another video is just a speculation, the final trailer I would say it almost given.

Definitely feels like we'll get either previews, another gameplay video, a trailer, or all of the above the week of the 10th!

Yeah I think it's probably in too, but I don't think they edited the build or the UI or anything to hide it.
Yeah I could see there being a prompt to flip while you're aiming an arrow perhaps, but outside of that it's just an aerial stunt really. Shield surfing certainly didn't have on screen button prompts.

We should trust the pattern
Props to whoever made this, but at this point it isn't just the pattern it's that there is no point doing final trailer if you aren't doing it month before release, what's the point of doing final trailer 3, 2 weeks before release?

We should trust the pattern
I honestly forgot there was another trailer for BOTW after the Switch event trailer. And dang, that thing was almost four minutes long???

I'm with Lukas, I think we get a trailer next week since previews will be coming out shortly after that and then it's really getting too close to launch, unless they literally don't do anything other than a launch trailer.

Maybe I'm not understanding, but you could quick swap depending on what you were holding in Botw as well. If you're holding a sword, you'll still have to swap to your bow to quick swap, or open the main inventory.

Though, it does make me wonder, how will we change abilities? The L button is for using them, right? It would make sense to use the down button on the D-pad for it. Using it to call upon horses feels like quite an excessive feature in comparison.

I imagine it will work like item selecting in SS, hold L to open menu, press L to use ability. Which is something I suggested years ago, so I'd be glad to see that.

It may be that you only perform those positions while the bow is drawn. You don't really need to face upwards unless you're trying to shoot at something.

Wow, great theories. It would make sense for the 4th starter ability to be the "feet" one, where Link can fall and then summon the glider, similar to a Loftwing. The glider can then transport him horizontally for a set period of time. Aonuma said "lots more ways to traverse to the sky islands", this could be one.

One big thing I wonder is what the Great Faries and Malanya are up to.

Are they in the same spots? Do they serve the same purpose?

I don’t see myself using horses AGAIN. I never used them in BotW because I wanted to explore and climb. I’ll be doing the same in this game.

Make it so Link whistles louder and your horse can hear you from farther away and make it so your horse can navigate steep hills as well as climb up and down rocks at minimum so they are actually helpful.

I can’t see a 4th zonai ability being what is basically just another paraglider. If the feet symbol is for a new ability, I think it’s more likely the iron boots from tp. Though that could mess with climbing. Maybe it could have a time limit or a specific amount of steps you can take before falling.

Zelda Direct:
-Begins with Final Tears of the Kingdom Trailer
-Narrated gameplay overview
-DLC announcement
-Aonuma thanking the fans for the long wait and telling us he hoped we enjoy our adventure
-Actual final trailer showing Zelda's perspective and revealing her own playable journey
-You wake up from your coma

But for real, if Zelda is playable and that's a big if, I think that would be the last thing they reveal before release either as the focus of the final trailer or the tease at the very end of it.

So the major points that might suggest Zelda is playable are:
-She got a slight redesign
-She is seen holding a Shiekah Slate in the art work

Not much to go off of. But I think one other minor point is the "Please, lend him your power" line in the most recent trailer. We presume that Zelda is asking a currently unknown third party to give Link their power. For the most part, storytelling in the series is done through Link's (i.e. the players) perspective, meaning the player doesn't know more about the story than what Link knows in game. If we are seeing a cutscene where Link isn't present, it's because Link is either recalling a memory, seeing a vision, or being told something by another character. So if Zelda is talking to another character to lend Link their power, then Link is standing their as she says it or seeing a vision/memory. That's entirely possible but then that brings into question how much time has passed between the cave incident and when Link receives his new arm or it could suggest that the power Zelda is referring to isn't about the arm.

Another possibility is and you probably know where I'm going with this, the conversations between Zelda and this third party doesn't involve Link but it is still being shown from the player's and the playable character's perspective. But in any case, I think the dialogue does indicate that Zelda is doing something in parallel with Link's journey. Whether the player gets to directly engage with that is all up in the air at this point. For all we know, this game could be pulling an MGS2 where we play as Link for the first section but then play as Tingle the remaining 90%.

Idc about everyone else being pessimistic. What we’ve seen so far shows Zelda can be playable. Short hair and now has her own Sheikah slate. They keep showing her underground over and over.

We’ve seen underground clips. Somebody will be going down there. Link has been seen in caves and possibly or not underground.

In the last shot of the latest trailer there is a cut and you don't know if Link catches her, however in the E3 2021 trailer she clearly falls down. I am not saying she is dead or isn't playable but she clearly falls into darkness. So it's possible she explores underground when she wakes up? Maybe.
