News GB/GBC games coming to Nintendo Switch Online, GBA games coming to NSO Expansion Pack (out now!)

I feel silly for not realizing this earlier, but Kirby Tilt 'n Tumble coming to this means native gyro controls for whatever GB/A games that support it, right? That's sick.
Pretty much a lock yeah. Safe to say the two GBA games with that feature (Warioware Twisted and Yoshi Topsy-Turvy) will make it over eventually.

Ah I didn't realize they had storage boxes, that is a wrinkle.

But regardless of storage or save back ups, if N64 NSO and GB NSO can (theoretically) be a two way street, why can't N64 NSO and the GB emulator running Blue in its own application?
I mean, they could, but if they're doing the work to make that happen for the N64 app, save data-wise, there's no reason they wouldn't for the Game Boy ones as well.

Aaaaaaaand i finally gave this a good spin. And man, i'm impressed.

Initial library aside (It's quite meager. This is the Game Boy line we're talking about, Nintendo!) i have - almost - nothing but praise for this. Visuals are crisp and clear, the filters are veeeeeeeery nice, and i have played enough of the games i've tested to know that emulation is quite good.

Adding the GBC mode/palettes and the GBPlayer features for authenticity is a nice touch and a clear improvement from previous attemps on 3DS and Wii U.

I can confirm the GBA scaling glitch and the input lag on docked mode though, wich is a shame. I hope the fix those, because otherwise this is a very good package.

Now, what were we talking about over here? Pokémon? I think 1st gen will be announced on Pokémon day, but i don't think they'll be released on the GB app. What if the roms are included in the N64 app as part of the Stadium package, playable only through the doduo tower? Has that ever been emulated elsewhere?

Not really. X works as a replicate of B so you can still comfortably run and jump in Mario games and other games that had the same setup.

Wish they included a control mapping option instead of this alternative control we have from the 3DS days but it's better than nothing.

millions of kids around the world played with that config - ive never heard anyone ever complain about it

I am flabbergasted honestly, on every Nintendo console with a standard 4 button control layout - Y for running and B for jumping has been a standard since Super Mario World and for me, an old person, converting to X for running and A for jumping for these emulators is extremely hard for my muscle memory and I just find it very uncomfortable to hold the joycons, I need to separate the hand a little bit from the controler so it feels like I am holding something very precious.
I will need to adapt ofc, but I have less problems going from Switch to Xbox than changing controls for platformers hah.

I know it's not ideal, but you could create a controller profile to use on GB and GBA.

It would be better if the remapping could be done in the app itself, but it's better than nothing.

And Game Boy Pocket Filter!!!! It's my favourite to play b/w games. It looks so crisp.

I played Super Mario Land 2 and Wario Ware last night. The emulation is fantastic, even if I did feel a bit of input lag on WW (I played docked)

Still need to switch to the GBPocket filter. The Classic green one is so good that i stayed there without realizing it lol.

Mario Kart for the GBA is destroying my right hand, and these courses are tough, holy smokes.
I legitimately don't understand how I managed to unlock everything in that game on every difficulty as a kid. Too much spare time, I assume!
I'm hoping since Genesis is part of the NSO Expansion Pack that we see some Sega GBA games. Sonic Advance 1 - 3. Gunstar Super Heroes. Maybe a miracle and Astro Boy.
Yeah I was hoping this would be the case - there's third party stuff on GBA from Sega and others that likely doesn't see a re-release else where. I think Sonic Advance made it to Virtual Console on Wii U in Japan, so hopefully there's a global re-release on NSO.

It's been 'a' standard, yes. A toggle for Y/B and B/A has been standard since NSMB though.

B/A exists because of the GB and GBA. You're playing a GBA game, so it's B/A. X is mapped to B precisely so that you have an option that feels more similar to Y/B without changing the default mapping, which avoids confusion in case the game itself tells you to press A or B for specific actions.

It's my favourite on the Analogue and (unsurprisingly) also here. I'm guessing that when Mario Land and Kirby 2 come to the platform I'll play them on OG GB mode because of that sweet, sweet nostalgia but for the most part, Poket is my favourite. Even better than GBC -except for those black cartridges, I guess.

Had to exercise some restraint and actually - gasp - continue with my Engage playthrough last night instead of continuing to play Wario and Link's Awakening. I really didn't expect to still love playing GameBoy games as much as I do, and I haven't even got to Metroid or Tetris yet.

My sickest desire is that they put the GameBoy version of Yoshi on here as well even though the NES one is already there. I put so much time into it as a kid.

While I do recall playing GB games on the old brick with that green tint, I turned that shit off so fast for the GB Color option. I spent many more years playing og gb games on gbc and gba then I ever did on a launch gb.

Finished Super Mario Land 2. Have to resist the urge to immediately begin Wario Land 3, which I'm looking forward to getting through. Probably after I've done my replay of Tropical Freeze; right now I have that, FE Engage and Prime Remastered on the go.

Kurukuru Kururin day one was a power move.

I’m super excited that Game Boy is here and I’m hoping we get some deep cuts along the way. I still think a completely separate NSO app for Pokémon could get announced during Pokémon Day.

Pocket filter is a fantastic surprise. And I even had a GBP back in the day, lol.

Talking about content and platforms, I think Nintendo should do what they did for Sega and throw Konami a mountain of cash. Not just for PCE/CD but also to get more of Konami and Hudson's stone cold classics from NES, SNES, N64, GB/C and GBA to fill out those libraries. NES and SNES especially need it after Nintendo's own well has run dry.

I also feel like CD/SVP for Genesis is just a matter of time given M2's work on them for the MD Mini 2. Filesizes for most games won't be an issue since it's mainly uncompressed audio or sometimes badly compressed video, which are both easily solvable.

Now that you mention SEGA, It would be nice if next console were Game Gear or Master System. I always feel those are unfairly forgotten.

And of course, PC Engine would be nice. Throw some CD games while they're at It

Yakuman lives!

I believe it never released outside Japan before, but it was in an assist trophy in one of the older Smash games. I think Brawl but maybe WiiU/3ds.
There was a release in Europe if Wikipedia is to be believed

I think we'll see Master System / Game Gear at some point. Especially because they share some of the same hardware right?

PC Engine probably depends on Konami I think?

Yep, the Game Gear is a Máster System with a lower resolution/viewport. In fact, you can play MS games on It with an adapter.

Playing Minish Cap for the first time. This is magical.
yup. it's so underrated, i want to believe the fact that it doesn't come up a lot when people talk about their favorite zelda is mostly because of people not having played it yet.

Ok this is my GBA wishlist:

Banjo Kazooie Grunty's Revenge
Banjo Pilot
Spyro Season of Ice
Spyro Season of Flame
Sonic Advance 1-2-3
Sonic Battle
Chu Chu Rocket
Gunstar Super Heroes
Advance Guardian Heroes
Sigma Star Saga
Rebelstar Tactical Command
Klonoa Empire of Dreams
Klonoa 2 Dream Champ Tournament
Bomberman Max 2
Konami Krazy Racers
Boktai Sun is in Your Hand
Boktai 2
Crash Bandicoot Huge Adventure
Crash Nitro Kart
Rayman Hoodlum's Revenge
Ghosts n Ghouls Advance
Megaman & Bass
Ecks vs Sever
GT Advance 1-2-3

I excluded the publishers who never release anything on VC, like Square-enix or Atlus. And no licensed stuff. Let's see how many of these I'll get my hands on.

Kuru Kuru Kururin launched in Europe, yes. I know well because I had (and still have) it, and I played that game a lot. Glad they included it on the service.

@ZephyrPhoenix I think this is the best moment to do it, just with the GB/GBA LAUNCH fresh and with no new mainline game on the horizon.

GC would probably need a different structure. One GC game takes up more space then the NES, SNES, N64, GB/C, GBA, and Genesis libraries combined. I don't just mean what's on NSO, I mean the entire library for all 6/7 consoles (if you count gbc separately or not) is smaller then your average GC even after you strip the dummy data out.
I think there is an "easy" solution to that. Just let people download the game they want to play. For example, if the app comes with 10 games, they're not installed on your system. You can choose the game to download and play, uninstall when you're done.

I think US people will not like that though, since many people there have bandwidth cap. But that shouldn't be a obstacle for the rest.

That's exactly what they should do for GC NSO (and hypothetically Wii, 3DS, and WiiU NSO if they ever happened). Ideally for GC and Wii they'd be smart and remove the dummy data (games like Animal Crossing GC only needs like 20 mbs of data or something crazy) though that's probably too much of an ask for Nintendo.

SMS/GG would be great after Genesis runs dry. Which could be sooner than later, Sega & M2 have doing an amazing job with content.

Yeah, I think Sega CD, Master System, Game Gear and PC Engine are all interesting options for the future. It would definitely be good to have more Sega and Konami titles on the service, especially if their involvement then fleshes out the libraries of the Nintendo systems, too. I'd love to have the Sonic Advance titles and Mystical Ninja 64, for example.

I have yet to race on all of the latest MK8D Booster Course tracks, but I'm here playing Super Circuit. What has NSO done to me.

My prediction is we'll get Red/Blue and Ruby/Sapphire on Pokemon Day, with everything else to come later. Maybe Gold/Silver too if they want to be really generous.

Hmm, really I was trying to understand your initial assertion that RBY having separate apps would imply no Transfer Park support for Stadium. I don’t think it’s any more or less likely depending on where RBY end up living, but we may be missing each other or I’m just not explaining myself well!

Either way we may found out in a few short (long) weeks!

If the reason the GB games are in separate apps is due to save data, then that implies that they didn't do the necessary work to deal with the save data for the Stadiums in the N64 app, since they're subject to the same set of issues. If they're in separate apps because you have to buy them standalone, then connecting from the N64 app is plausible, but contingent on dealing with the save data issue.

Oh yeah initially I was speculating on them being available separately not contingent on the save data issue. Just to make you pay for it. I see where we lost step with each other now!

I saw someone on Resetera mention this which I thought was a good point - one possible strike against the NSO apps is that it's hard to imagine them putting RBYGSC on the base sub...all for $20 a year. Unless they create an "add-on" to the base plan you can buy or something. A DLC license for the app, basically. But that messaging could get confusing, I think.

If they wanted to do something like that, I expect they'd probably just lock it to Expansion Pack instead of introducing a new sub.

They already put the fine print saying Stadium won't have transfer, so I wouldn't count on that, even if it is feasible.

As for payment options, TCP already have their own subscription for Pokemon (Home), so I wouldn't be that surprised if instead of licensing mainline games to Nintendo, they added an NSO-like app to that subscription with Pokemon games from multiple retro consoles. The app and the revenue would be directly handled by the TCP, instead of Nintendo having to pay a huge fee or a percent of their subscription. Which would suck for me, cause I have no intention of subbing that even at the current price, but it seems simpler and more lucrative for Nintendo, so it wouldn't surprise me.

With the addition of GBA, I'm finally thinking about signing up for the expansion pass, but I'm out of the loop.

What the GBA and N64 emulation like? I know in the past N64 emulation was terrible on Nintendo consoles. More interested in the GBA than N64, but I would like to play Goldeneye.

I thought the base GB app was great, for what it's worth. Definitely prefer playing with the small resolution size for that authentic, squinting childhood experience.
