News GB/GBC games coming to Nintendo Switch Online, GBA games coming to NSO Expansion Pack (out now!)

I have one of the smaller N30 versions and plan on using that. Found it’s best for the 16 bit and older games on switch and undies since it’s fully featured. It’s my work travel controller since it’s compact, so works well for these too

Also: I love the pattern and colors of your pants
That's a great choice. I also like the 8bitdo Lite as it's got every button you could need for any non-3D Switch game, but everything is so tactile and clicky. The smaller form factor is a trade off but you soon become accustomed to the size.

Actually, the NSO SNES controller can back out to the home screen, and it can take screenshots.
Nintendo did some sorcery specific to the SNES app so no doubt it's within their gift to do the same for the other apps. I've just realised I've never tested the NES app with the SNES controller as I've never had need to (I've got the two NES controllers).

Here is one thing I don't understand: why do the NSO controllers (all of them) drain battery so quickly when disconnected and switched off? I've just had to charge all of them before use as they'd all died within months of last use, whereas I can fire up a DS Lite that hasn't been used for years and have a nice green light. Ditto for my 8bitdo pads. 🤔

I hope they add the other 2D Mario's and ALttP to GBA. I'm not sure how they would add the Four Swords content to ALttP considering there's a whole extra dungeon that's locked behind FS, but the GBA versions of SMW and ALttP is my preferred way to play those games.

Also I hope they dip into some third parties, having the Sonic games and Crash games would be nice.

As long as we have them all by the end of this calendar year, they can do whatever if they do indeed release all of those games.
Plus Emerald. Don't forget Emerald!
Man if they bring back Emerald with local and online multiplayer, which seems like a real possibility given how they’ve treated online on these apps, I’ll be so happy😭

After thinking about it, I think all of the Pokémon releases will be staggered instead of a tidal wave on direct day. I'm guessing it will be something like this.

Feb- Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow (What is green?) + Pokémon Stadium
March/April- Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal + Pokémon Stadium 2
May/June- Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald
July/August- Pokémon Fire Red/Leaf Green
Yeah, I can see them staggering it so people don’t get burnt out or overwhelmed and so they can essentially have non-stop Pokemon promo. They can do crossover stuff with Go, SV raids and maybe Unite announcements from each gen as they release on NSO too.

Throw in the new series, Detective Pikachu and the SV expansion and TPC have plenty to tide people over until the next spinoff/remake/mainline entry.

The multiplayer integration here is absolutely superb! It even supports Single Pak and Multi Pak link multiplayer separately for GBA games!

It remains to be seen if IR support is in place for GBC, but if it is? Then the multiplayer support for both GB/GBC and GBA is basically perfect… all except for one glaring issue…

… there is currently no way to link two separate games together. With how things are set up right now? Each player currently must be playing the same game. This means that there’s currently no way to link two separate titles together; which would block you from linking games such as Oracle of Ages/Seasons together, or Pokémon Red/Blue, or Golden Sun/Golden Sun TLA, or Metroid Fusion/Metroid Zero Mission etc.

Bit of an unfortunate oversight. Hopefully they fix that later on, because it’s basically the only major issue here (assuming that GBC IR support is in).

Finally beginning The Minish Cap. First time ever playing it and I have to say the game looks great graphically. It's aged well in that regard for sure.

I believe Nintendo fully owns the rights to the GB version of Tetris, meanwhile Tetris Attack would need to relicense the Tetris name. Makes sense to go with Panel De Pon since the license for that will never expire or need to be renegotiated.
While Nintendo does own the Game Boy version of Tetris. They still has to negotiate The Tetris Company for a re-release. And it's much easier to do it for that game compared to Tetris Attack where it bear the Tetris name sorely for marketing purpose and play nothing like a Tetris game.

They had to pull down the VC release on 3DS because Ubisoft made an online exclusivity deal on Tetris games for a few years. Causing all existing Tetris games on online stores to be pulled out.

Also, we got the Game Boy skin as the first event skin in Tetris 99 to accommodate its 30 years anniversary. Just a little fact.

First time replaying Minish Cap since it’s original release, feels good not having to drop $70 on ebay for it so good job Nintendo.

Only two hours in, it reminds me of Skyward Sword since world traversal seems to be fairly puzzle based. Not my preferred style, and I’d rather do it in 3d, but it’s fun for what it is.

Also played some Game & Watch Gallery 3 and that stuff is like catnip for me. G&W Gallery 2 was the first handheld game I ever played so my nostalgia for the series (in particular the GBC ones) is pretty strong. I look forward to seeing the rest of the series added to the services.

Honestly there is so much interesting stuff to be added that’s going to save me a ton of money on second hand purchases, it’s kinda incredible.

I work of art. Beautiful art design, awesome music, great sidekick. The game is just amazing and I am always glad when more people get to experience it.
Mario Kart for the GBA is destroying my right hand, and these courses are tough, holy smokes.
Yeap. A ruthless cpu doesn't help either.

So why on earth is X+A defaulted to run and jump in SMB3? That's hilariously awkward and bad
Not really. X works as a replicate of B so you can still comfortably run and jump in Mario games and other games that had the same setup.

Wish they included a control mapping option instead of this alternative control we have from the 3DS days but it's better than nothing.

millions of kids around the world played with that config - ive never heard anyone ever complain about it

edit - my bad, im thinking of the original ba nes controller button layout

Played a bit of Minish Cap. There's something about that grainy sounding Zelda's lullaby that just hits you in the nostalgia. I also took a quick run at Mario Kart. The visuals are really impressive. It's amazing how it's not something you really noticed or appreciated as a kid.

I'm hoping since Genesis is part of the NSO Expansion Pack that we see some Sega GBA games. Sonic Advance 1 - 3. Gunstar Super Heroes. Maybe a miracle and Astro Boy.

I believe it never released outside Japan before, but it was in an assist trophy in one of the older Smash games. I think Brawl but maybe WiiU/3ds.
That makes sense, never even heard of the series but I do recognize the assist trophy from Brawl, makes me want the cool looking Gamecube sequel now that never released outside of Japan.

How is the emulation for these games? Responsive? Good visual quality?
No problems so far on my Lite, but I am not the most sensitive to input lag. Been having a blast replaying Wario Land 3. Sure does make me want a new one though…

I just completed the first area and boss...it's got me hooked. The music is fantastic and it plays well so far.

It totally slipped my mind, but Geno in Superstar Saga is technically the first Square Enix content on NSO. Checked out a speedrun to make sure, and yeah, its still there in the credits:

Now when are they actually going to put Super Mario RPG on the service...

It got a PAL release - I didn’t know until now it didn’t release everywhere.

Funnily enough I jokingly suggested the other day it was one of a couple of IPs from that era coming back this year to fill out Nintendo’s schedule. The other was Doshin the Giant which I’m realising also skipped America but came here. What a weird time.

I feel silly for not realizing this earlier, but Kirby Tilt 'n Tumble coming to this means native gyro controls for whatever GB/A games that support it, right? That's sick.

I was wondering if they would try to patch this out somehow since they removed him in the remake on 3DS. Glad that’s not the case

Enjoy! Minish Cap was my absolutely favorite Zelda game before BotW came along, and even now I still flip-flop between the two. Either way, it is an excellent game!

it amuses me so much that when i finally decide to get a steam deck, these come out.

Do we think TPCi will release the old Pokemon games within these NSO apps, or just use the emulators and put them on the eShop as separate applications? (I'm assuming they'll charge too in that scenario but regardless of price, ignore that for now)

As someone else pointed out, the games being on the NSO app means they have save backups in the cloud, which we know they are sensitive to and have avoided so far on all mainline titles on Switch.

Personally, I'd be very down if they were separate applications. Give me that glorious classic Sugimori artwork over and over again on my home screen.

honestly I expect them to put them on the eshop for a price because they are greedy shits. I hope they put these games on NSO but ya...

Hmm, thinking about it a bit, I wonder if the lack of SGB support (and also running GBC aware games in original GB mode) has to do with save states. GB, GBC, and SGB save states would be mutually incompatible for games that differentiate between them. You could probably deal with it he issue through some UI warnings, but it's not trivial.

These feel so good. Best value add since Genesis. I was afraid they might be meh like N64.

The cloud save issue is something that can be worked around with the ability to carve out non-cloud enabled data if they are sufficiently motivated to do so. Separate apps is the other workaround, but that has a different set of tradeoffs. In particular, separate apps would heavily imply no Transfer Pak support for the Stadiums, since those are currently announced for the main N64 app.

If they did put them on this I would expect no export features excluding n64 stadium. Tho they may just do special states for stadium

If they did create a non-cloud data solution as you say, thinking through it...yeah I guess it would just upload everything in your GBA NSO save except those games to the cloud, but then it would still grab every save when doing a local transfer to a new Switch. Yeah surely that must be possible.

Would separate apps really imply no Transfer Pak support though? Either way the N64 app is going to have to communicate with a second, external app - whether it's the GB NSO app or a PKMN Blue app running the same GB emulator, I'm not seeing the obstacle. But please correct me if I'm missing something!

By put them on "this" do you mean on the NSO apps? I don't know, if all Home has to do is read the save data I feel like they could make it work even if the data is nested in the NSO apps

The problem with separate apps and Transfer Pak is that the connection is not one way. The Pokémon Stadium games were the Pokémon Home of their time and contain storage boxes of their own. They'd be subject to the same save data concerns as the mainline games.

Ah I didn't realize they had storage boxes, that is a wrinkle.

But regardless of storage or save back ups, if N64 NSO and GB NSO can (theoretically) be a two way street, why can't N64 NSO and the GB emulator running Blue in its own application?

I kinda foresee a separate Pokemon add on to the expansion pass (paid potentially) with GB/GBA Pokemon games (and eventually up to B/W)

Ctrl+F "Mother 3"

... I'm surprised at the restraint being shown in this thread, wow. Not ONE mention til the separate thread was opened?

Honestly the best thing to come out of this for me is how much more accessible experiencing the multiplayer is on games that I've never been able to before.

Kuru Kuru Kururin's multiplayer is very fun. Plan on checking out Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga next, also really looking forward to playing Kirby & the Amazing Mirror with my friend.

Played some Game & Watch Gallery 3. Great game from my childhood. I love Mario Bros. in particular - it gets fast and frantic pretty quickly, but it's balanced out by simple controls and a simple goal: catch cakes, don't let them fall. The song in modern mode will always be an ear worm for me, too.

I really like the "accuracy" filter they got going on! The dot matrix and the blur feel just right, more than the various CRT filters. Lovely stuff!
