Pre-Release The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Pre-Release Discussion Thread

I hope Ganondorf remains shriveled up the whole time and the plot is about him trying to steal Zelda's beauty. Every time you get a game over or quit out, you get a cutscene of Ganondorf winning and turning sexy.

or...give us a short cuscene, then a short gameplay segment that follows the cutscene, and then cut to black , showing how the tone and gameplay changed in parts.

You are pure evil, you know that?
Seriously though, the less we know about the game before diving in, the better, right? The sense of wonder and discovery is what made the first game incredible, I don't want everything spelled out in this.

I'm well aware I can just stay away from all trailers but I feel like Nintendo knows this is the best approach to marketing this. Show maybe some of the new systems but don't reveal much if anything about the world itself.

It's gonna be meaty. We're in the three month period. For BotW that gave us the Game Awards teaser with gameplay and the story trailer. Theres no turning back now. Zonai magic arm time.

It has -such- a high bar to meet let alone pass, I still watch the BotW trailer to feel things. We knew so little going into it, towns, voice acting, all the races, the orchestral music and pacing and sheer emotional punch of it all is nearly flawless.

And so we wait ...

Yeah, 2016 left us with, like, "ok, there's cooking, a magnet power, some sick combat moves, Master Sword, hmm..."

Then 2017 came along and was like "ALSO, here's the Gerudos, towns, Divine Beasts, Calamity Ganon, shrines, giant vistas, Hyrule Castle getting consumed by darkness, drama, action, Zelda crying, and so much more!!"

I hope a similar 1-100 will happen tomorrow with TotK.

Can't! Wait!

I hope it's another 30 second teaser. And then no further info about another trailer. Leave everyone gobsmacked.
I love you, mr. sentient Lighthouse, so y u hurt me lik dis?

Personally I hope they combine the tone of the teasers so far, and give just a little bit more context. Gimme a main theme even remotely as awesome as BotW's one too. I think they can do that without giving too much substantial away.

alright, it was fun to keep the hype oven going for a bit over here. after tomorrow's new bits I'm trying to go dark on this. I love overanalyzing screenshots and UI but that always turns into "ah now I'm here, this part I've been staring at for months from the trailers and gameplay".

choo choo!

I'm actually surprised that there's a decent percentage of people who don't want much more information or trailer clips. I'm not one of them, I'd love to see an epic trailer for TotK, and it's likely we will get one tomorrow. I think it’s very likely Nintendo will give a lot of information, clips, gameplay, etc... for this game, obviously not as much as BotW got, that ship sailed, but it will probably be very hard to keep yourself in the dark for 3 months.

do we think there will be a treehouse segment? maybe announced tomorrow but at a further date?

I wanna see a trailer, but I don't wanna see a Treehouse (longer gameplay or mechanics deep dive)

Honestly I'd rather see the Treehouse, they're more limited in what they reveal about the game overall but give you a better idea of the game loop, which is something I don't mind getting spoiled on beforehand

We will get a trailer but it will still be quite ambigious i think. But will show more about the context, changes and gameplay mechanics. But i don't expect a big story trailer like the 2017 one. That one came early on because they had to sell the Switch and change minds about the company with a BOOM. They gave their all on that one and i feel like Zelda can have another trailer like a month before release to hype up even more.

Like it will probably have a direct in itself late March/early April so they will probably save the big final trailer for that.

The trailer will give us a story premise, some kind of dungeon gameplay, some kind of field gameplay, new enemies, and new mechanics

We are 3 months away from the release, this has to be the big one. The showstopper.

I think it'll open the show. I think the trailer will be ~2 minutes. I think we'll get a voiced line. I think we'll see a boss. I think we'll see some new cutscenes.

And I think we'll see the announcement of a TOTK-Direct.

Wishlist for what a complete Totk trailer has to show:
  • What is the main concept of the game (outside BOTW but in the sky)
  • New areas outside the sky, so we can finally understand the "the expanded world goes beyond the sky" thing.
  • Link's new battle abilities (one new arm power and aerial moveset)
  • A rewind feature for weapons that can cancel the fact some of them broke (then this debate can finally be put to rest)
  • Ganondorf's voice
  • Legacy Zelda monsters showcase
  • More cryptic story elements without direct spoilers
  • Link travelling between ground and sky without any loading time
  • Major changes in known BOTW areas
  • That "one" feature that will make us say "Okay, this is a not just BOTW 1.5)

i already know that ill buy it on release, that i will like the game and gameplay.
I don't want to be sitting during the game, and every time when a dramatic cutscene is playing say: oh, yeah, the one from that trailer",
i want to be wowed and be surprised. Meaning i will at least try to not watch a full story trailer, if its a gameplay trailer probably if its not to expansive.

Looking forward to the reactions tomorrow. I know at least one youtube channel (misscilckgaming) where their reactions to the final BOTW trailer was the entire reason they started to get some traction.

Completely agree actually.

I get the sentiment, but I never felt like the BotW trailers gave anything away while I was playing BotW. This could definitely be different in TotK, since we know where everything is, if they show us a TotK trailer and they show us a specific area, then we know exactly what changed and where. If they chop up the trailer with a bunch of short clips/scenes, with plenty of sky-island and underground scenes, then I imagine as long as you stay away from deep-dive videos and threads such as this, simply watching the trailer shouldn't kill too much of any surprise.

I think showing us some underground gameplay in the future, would be best for everyone. Underground gameplay, in some unknown area, immediately separates itself from BotW and it doesn't let our sub-conscious note the changes from BotW.

Uh oh... Nintendo is about to drop a 40 minute TOTK speed run tomorrow. Better not watch the Direct! ;)

oh yeah, it was fine for BotW (even if the lat Trailer did kinda give away the emotionally strongest performances from the game), but with us knowing the world already, we can gain waaaaay more knowledge from stuff shown.
That makes it really tricky. Like, they show a dungeon entrance, and from the Background we can exactly reason where on the map it is and what changed. that would be ... anoying.

We will not see it here but am so curious what will they do with stables theme. It's so iconic that they will probably change it just a little.

Avengers: Endgame had it right and Zelda is perfect for that type of marketing. Show next to nothing of the game and just let it speak for itself.

I’m in the same boat with others as being perfectly fine if nothing else was ever shown again, but as it currently stands I can’t go on media blackout for the game until I see a full trailer. Feed me once, then I’ll starve myself until May when I’ll be feasting like a Goron at a rock buffet.

My dream ending to a ToTK trailer is hearing a deep ominous voice that’s clearly Ganondorf without even showing the character, then cut to title. Keep it vague and mysterious, but give that little tease. That’ll make for enough theory videos to tide me over until launch.

Yea i bet we will have some narration. I just want to know like a little about what is going on. People asking for low marketing... that won't happen. Even Pokemon that was a 20 million seller lock had massive marketing. Trailers are not made only for fans but also for the global appeal. They need to convey something here. But again, i don't expect a blowout level trailer like the 2017 one was.

Huh, it just struck me: we might actually get a linear story this time around.
It’s what I want the most. Like any other change they make — or thing they don’t change -- I know I’ll enjoy the game regardless. I’ll be happy on the gameplay front because I love BOTW in that way, but I definitely missed OOT/TP/WW Ganondorf and the story style of the other games.

I liked what BOTW had too, like Zelda rejecting the “Legend“ in a way and even the vibe of some tension between the races, it just needed a little more development. That’s why my fingers are crossed that TOTK might be able to follow through on some of the story potential if we’re not getting 90% of the story in flashbacks.

YES!! it’s about time, I’m so ready. I don’t need much, I just want a peak at possible dungeons, would love to know if there is underwater, maybe a new city.
But for the love Hylia don’t give us another cryptic trailer that answers one or two of our questions and gives us a 1000 new ones, my mind will explode.
I'm absolutely beside myself with excitement! Like, I feel positively electric.

Story-relevant cutscenes. Aerial combat. Sick arm powers. Proper Ganondorf reveal. New characters. New weapons. Answers to what the fracking heck the cable is for.

All in a little more than 24 hours.

I can't freaking believe that we're almost there.

HYPE
I think we will get all of these except maybe the cable which might be too specific, but it would be so hype to show Link doing a rail slide down that fracking cable!

What do y'all think we'll see in terms of arm abilities?

1. Ground phasing
2. Momentum reversal
3. ???
4. ???
for one, I expect this to be a bigger game, so more than 4 main abilities. Here are some throwaway ones:

  • Lens of truth
  • Grappling hook/sticky hand, very physics based, but you can only use it for a certain range and once per “jump”
  • Create clouds, similar to cryonis
  • Vacuum suck up malice
  • Telekinesis
Aside from that, I hope that the menu system when you pause the game is kind of a holographic interface created by the arm’s spirit energy. Like Link holds out his arm and there’s swirling green UI. And in general I hope the UI is better than BOTW of course

I'm looking forward to seeing new enemies. If they show any gameplay at all I'm sure they'll show Link fighting new enemies rather than old ones.

Darknuts, anyone? Redeads would be perfect for underground areas. Poes as well. Pols voice? Goriya? Roc? Like-likes surely HAVE to be in this one.

Will we maybe see some form of the Ooccoo in the sky islands?

Just bring them all back. Every enemy ever. Tears of the Kingdom “Everyone is Here!”.

I’m expecting our first look at aerial combat that got patented a while back. Show off flying enemies, maybe that giant bat creature we saw a glimpse of in the last teaser.

All the aerial combat hype reminds me of the horseback combat hype during the lead-up to TP in 2005-2006. Shit was lit. And turned out extremely well - Back then, I remember just riding around in the Eldin field a lot to battle grunts.

Hope that the combat in TotK vastly outdoes everything ever seen before in Zelda.

Hoping for hype moment like this in the trailer, maybe Link fighting some enemy dragon or kargarok

I need this to be a blowout trailer. New characters shown, new enemies shown, exciting locations.
