Is this your first time playing Persona 5?

I can respect that take, but abso-fucking-lutely not. I ADORE the palaces in 5 due to how unique they are, gimmicks and all. I felt the opposite, going back to Persona 4 for the first time after 5: I couldn't stand the dungeons. They felt like boring, empty hallways with nothing but combat in them, no crafted design, no character. Just bland things that you wanted to jam through as quickly as possible to be done with. Whereas in Persona 5, I could just hang out in dungeons for hours (and did!) with how bespoke, charming, and atmospheric they are. I would hate going back after P5 gave us some of the best dungeons in any JRPG ever.
Ehh, the gungeons in 4 had just as much in them as 5. You had treasure chests and enemies strewn about. 4 just let you get straight to the combat, whereas with 5 you gotta go through all this other stuff to get to the meat and potatoes. Only real thing 5 has that 4 doesn't is will seeds and having a out of the way collectable could be done In a procedural dungeon. Also the dungeons in 4 had tons of atmosphere. Each had there own music and designs. The bath house was very distinct from the underground base. The princess castle was very different from the club. Even if they were all procedural generated they each felt very distinct and unique from one another.

Royal would have made me very happy if there was an option to switch over to procedural generation for the palaces. Hoping they do something like that for 6.

It's a really weird fight that plays out more like a puzzle boss than an actual fight. It's almost like those 'gauntlet trials where you basically have to do a very specific set of moves in the right order' optional battles from SMTIV, if anyone remembers those.
Well, sure, if it were possible to deal enough damage on the green phase, but I don’t think it is on hard mode unless you’ve been extremely cornfed. I was even using DLC Personas.

I guess to me that 'stuff' IS the meat and potatoes. I don't just want hallways to run through and grab chests and fight enemies in. There's just a generic feel to all the dungeons in P4 that didn't work for me. While the tilesets are different, yes, they all feel about the same just with different coats of paint, and were really lacking a crafted feel. But I admit I'm a bit biased as I tend to hate procedurally generated dungeons in every game I've encountered them.

To me, the perfect JRPG dungeon is more like a Zelda dungeon, but with RPG combat in it. I want puzzles, environmental things to do, gimmicks that are new to each dungeon (think the sorceror's ring doing something different in every dungeon in Tales of Symphonia). I love that stuff. Dungeons in JRPGs in the HD era have mostly been a massive disappointment for me as they have tended to go more for large, empty spaces and have steadily cut out puzzles and fun things to do in them that aren't just 'fight more enemies'. Persona 5 is one of the few times I've really enjoyed them and they felt more like they used to in the past.

It is possible! Not easy, but possible. I managed to beat that boss on Hard mode, no DLC personas, and wasn't overleveled. Just took several attempts and a lot of planning. And also a lot of things I had unlocked in advance, like switching out characters mid-combat and upgraded technicals (I think, it's been a while)

I think I’m gonna probably have the same problems maxing out the confidants I did last time, but I will probably play NG+ after P3P and P4G, so I’ll get to see them all eventually. (I haven’t even seen all the social links in P4G despite playing through it 4+ times)

My spicy hot take it that Mementos is a better dungeon than the palaces. I also thing Persona 4 has better dungeons than 5 does.

I prefer the procedural generation and more combat oriented aspect. The palaces in 5 just have too many gimmicks and annoying thing in them that just drag shit down. Palace 5 was so bad I wanted to drop the game. The gimmicks on it are painful and the boss fight is just unfun and frustrating. They should have thrown that whole place in the trash and gone back to the drawing board for Royal.

I would really prefer for Persona 6 to go back to the procedural generated dungeons or at least make it an option. I love the combat in Persona games and would rather do that than waste time on the gimmicks.
While I'm not sure that I'd agree on going back to P4 style dungeon design per se, I do absolutely agree that quite a few of P5's dungeons were a bit too, hmmm, convoluted for their own good. I think there could and should be a balance here between tightness/focus and creating a dungeon with environmental purpose beyond just being there and offering thematical representation.
P6 stands to correct some of P5's mistakes anyway, and the length and pacing certainly are up there on the list, imo. And the palaces played a huge role in that aspect.

One thing I cannot wait for, is... the reaction from Shido and Akechi when we send the calling card to Shido. Assuming that all happens, of course. This game has thrown curveballs all the time, so I wouldn't be surprised.

New patch up:

Sounds pretty minor but I'm wondering if that'll resolve the darkness issue people were talking about at launch? Or is this a different issue?
This is a different issue. I had one time where I loaded into my room and it was really dark/dim as if the Switch was still in burn-in protection mode but the menu wasn't dimmed. I closed and reloaded my game and it was back to normal.

It boggles my mind that you aren't allowed to all out attack them once they are down.
Probably because
Okumura himself is considered part of the battle even before his last stand but cannot be targeted yet, same as with another boss in the third semester.
It still really sucks however, I agree.

He really shouldn't be, considering he can't be targeted. It's just a badly designed boss fight at the end of a badly designed dungeon. They really should have completely redone that whole dungeon.

I've been replaying this with the switch version. So nice to have a portable version. I played Persona 5 vanilla once in 2019 and P5R two times on PS4 in 2020.

I never bothered with the strength confidant in any of those runs, however. I tried it but got bored too quickly. I'm glad I'm doing it this time, though! I was missing out on a lot of perks by ignoring it on previous playthroughs.

I noticed the game push Joker and Kasumi together too much, feels like it's a "canon" date.
In Royal it does feel that way a lot. In vanilla it was less clear, but it seemed to push Makoto probably the most of anyone?
Kasumi is the weakest character in the new Royal stuff tbh
I agree, but it'd be really difficult for her not to be given how she's written and her role in the story. For a lot of reasons, some spoiler-y.

I had already narrowed it down between Makoto and Kasumi, but I don’t think I’m going to be able to wait for Kasumi.

Also the Hawaii event with Makoto was cute and gained her a lot of points

So, I’m in palace…

…number 5
What a terrible boss fight. So far it was from ok to great, but killing the soldiers at the same time? What a terrible design that thankfully didn’t make to SMT V.

So, after going back, seeing some videos and strategies, I was able to destroy this boss easily. Who would have thought that the key was

the baton pass

Yeah that whole boss fight is basically a "Do you know how to use baton pass?" check. I was irritated at the time during the boss fight but I kind of look back a little fondly at the challenge.

Yesterday, I fought the boss in

Futaba's palace, and I really feel like something is not right with the game there. I shot the ballista once, but then it took FOREVER for it the second shot to spawn. Like, I had to manually take this boss from 3/4ish health to about 1/4, which took forever because it's a big HP sponge. I remenber this also happened in the PS4 version of P5R. It's just so much of a slog that it makes wonder if it was intentional. I don't remember it taking that long in the original Persona 5.

They basically ruined that boss fight in P5R compared to the original.

I ended up playing this all weekend and getting through all of the second palace. I liked some of the changes to the Madarame boss fight, overall just having a really great time with Royal and it's nice to not feel a need to rush through it since I played vanilla already - like I played through the first palace and up to the second one in late November / early December, now this part now (and will play some more this week). But then Fire Emblem comes out so I'll take another break to play that, etc. Maybe I'll finish Royal by the end of 2023!

the baton pass
I recently finished that Boss and definitely one of the worst in the game so far.

I initially was around level 40 going in, and even making use of the baton pass, was still getting bodied by either the last multi-robot wave or the one before it. I ended up reloading to the save before the fight, and grinding in the palace up to level 44, having to use a bunch of my SP restoration items on the process.
Anyway, I knew the optimal team of need for the last wave, and had my team as Joker, Morgana, Ann, and Haru. Joker would used Mapsio, Baton Pass to Ann to remove the defense boost on one of the robots, have Haru use maPsio, and have Morgana and Ann use Wind and Fire Break. From there everyone spams their strongest multi-attack. However, Okumura’s hunger debuff and critical hits on my team still cost me a couple tries, and once I finally did beat that wave, I fell for the Big Bang Burger attack and was wiped out. Once I got through again and just played that Big Bang attack segment very defensively, I finally finished.

So yeah, I get that the fight really wanted you to take advantage of Baton Pass, but it also seemed to want you to prepare things to counter the debuffs and the strategy needed was tight enough that sn unlucky critical hit would derail the entire run. I’m happy to have this one behind me now.

If you get relationship points for a character, but haven’t yet met the prerequisites to do their next confidant rank up, are those points still added and count towards triggering future rank ups, or are they wasted until you do rank up the confidant level?

Just gonna do some light pondering here, you don't need to respond to these ponderings, just, if you've already beaten the game, sit back and laugh at how I don't know the answers yet...

So I know, based upon looking up dating guides, there's a Valentine's Day event. Yet here I am, just before Christmas, about to head into the depths of Mementos, for what is being described as "our last mission". What is happening between now and then if this is "our last mission"?!

And are we going to just forget the palace that we found Kasumi in!?

Again, I don't want any answers to this, I just wanted to put this out there so I could once again come back in a few days or whatever and go "oh" again, as this game has caused me to do so many times already.

It all counts

Where is Persona 4 and Persona 3 STs? P4G needs requisites for true ending too, right?
I believe @Chie is doing the P4G ST

I have fear in asking it, but, is it possible to max all of the confidants in a single play?
Yes, but it is hugely inadvisable to do so on your first play through (I mean if it happens organically, that's a different thing, but the first time you play, you should just play, don't try to minmax)

I'm doing the Persona 4 Golden ST. I've never done one before, do we post them The day before launch right? Should be finished with it tonight.

I love that we posted this at the same time lol.
Lol, great minds

To answer your question from the previous post, I posted this ST on October 20 for an October 21 game, so one day before, but I have seen people post theirs several days before. I think you should be fine if you post yours today?

I'll have it up at some point tonight then. I'm at work right now.
