Pre-Release The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Pre-Release Discussion Thread

The fact that the left thing is on the left Joy-Con at the bottom (same that was in the E3 2021 trailer). And in the latest trailer you can see these glowing things with green energy that am 99% sure now are the egg things.

It's pretty obvious now that whatever that egg thing is, it could be one of the main mechanic of this game. At least to me.

The symbol shown on the left Joy-Con is very close to this. Perhaps there are more versions of this thing.

Maybe those are this game's equivalent to guardians?
I'm sure someone has theorized that already but it's the first time I thought of it 😅

I’m sure TotK will run just fine. Nintendo have 6 years of hardware experience now, I’m sure that they know how to really work culling and LOD (and all of that tech stuff that allows for a huge world to be rendered on screen without hiccups) now. Seems like the sky and the overworld are really, really far apart, so maybe there will be enough clouds in the way for the two layers of the world to not be rendered simultaneously at all.

Sure, BotW had issues at launch, but I’m fairly certain that that was just hardware inexperience.

I just saw it, I’m not sure if I’m a fan, it’s looks OK, but I don’t understand what the symbols on the console and joy-cons mean, so they kind of just look like decorations. The gold and white theme is surprising, I would’ve expected a white, blue, and green theme.

Assuming that the leak is real (and it seems to be), then marketing will begin very soon for this game. A dedicated January Direct is on the cards imo

And if I remember right, it's TOSE who ported BotW to the Switch.
With 6 years of hardware experience and the game being optimized internally by Nintendo teams, I'm sure it will be the most impressive game on the console technically.

I definitely see a Tears of the Kingdom direct in late January/ February. As others have said there is lots of ground to cover. Amiibos will probably be announced as well.

My unpopular opinion is that we will not get a traditional direct until E3 time and first half of the year will all be marketing for Zelda.

What are the odds they just announce the OLED without a trailer for the game like next week lol
They could do it but they really should put actual details about the game in a Direct or Treehouse first and then coincide the announcement there.

I take it no one here could possibly wait until a Switch 2 remaster comes out with a potential 4K/60fps?

I’d find it impossible to wait tbh.
I played BotW in 720p/30fps and loved it. I don't even think I want TotK at 60fps, I like that it looks like a Ghibli film and the YouTube stuff I've seen where they crank up the framerate makes it look weirdly uncanny to me.

I know I'm in the super minority on that, but 🤷‍♂️

First thing I noticed is the symbol on the left joy con is shaped like a Hylian Crest but it uses a closed Lotus flower and two eye symbols. I guess that's the ancient Zonai crest, very cool.

The full Zonai text is also on the serpents/dragons on the front of the dock. The letters/words on the serpents/dragons were faded in the last trailer, so between that detail and the Zonai crest, this is very likely real. in my opinion.

I saw the leak and I think the design looks great (assuming it is real), I can't wait until the Feb. Direct to learn more.

If we actually do end up getting a general direct in earlish January rather than usual February, do you think it might be a sign that Nintendo is slightly altering their direct schedule for the year since last year e3 was cancelled and it might be again this year? Cause if they have a January direct, then the usual September direct is 8 months later, leaving room for another direct at the 4 month line (aka May) which could allow them to space out announcements to closer to their release dates and also getting ahead of any other companies doing their own E3 substitute showcase. Idk just a potential thought. Have no idea even in my imagined scenario whether the potential May direct would be before or after totk release date lol I could see pros and cons to both. All I know is that a direct every 4 months sounds nice lol

Someone help me out here. It looks like there is a random Zonai letter over the bottom serpents'/dragons' eye in the photos the leaker took. Does anyone else see it? Very strange.

Edit: Look at the photo of the dock that is on the back of the box, the photo of the dock on the front of the box has too much glare.

If it's really bad I will wait. What's a few more months/years after all this time?

If it's like BotW it won't really bother me.

I sold my switch 😅 not sure if I should buy another secondhand for TotK or wait for new hardware

Why would ToTK which is made for the Switch run worse than BoTW which was made for the Wii U and ported on Switch. Zelda team rarely release a product that is bugged at a point that it affects the gameplay. Botw had some issues but most of it was fixed with a patch close to release. So for a game release at the end of the Switch cycle, i doubt it will affect the experience. NMH3 and Bayo 3 weren't made by Nintendo nor was Pokemon SV.

It does confirm that we will probably have a new console in 2024. I doubt they would launch a revision without Zelda ToTK. I do hope they will keep the same library. Games on Switch are expensive and i would hate to have to keep both system to play my old games when they are making an effort to put a good catalogue up on Switch with NSO. Starting from 0 would be soooo dumb.

At this point, they are probably waiting on the reveal to show MP4 which will (and should tbh) released on both systems.

Edit : for the OLED TOTK leak, how the hell would it leak 5 months in advance... it's not like retailers got it already... or even people at the company. They probably just started making them. So i guess there is a fair chance this leak isn't real. Also, it appears the box says "no game is included" in small letters in french but it is not specified on the box that it's a digital game. It is pretty much fake.

Manufacturing starts several months ahead of time. This isn't a retail leak. And games are never included with these special editions.

Yes but 5 months in a half before the release is CRAZY. Especially knowing Nintendo is pretty secretive with this stuff and even more when it comes to Zelda.
And my point is, i know the game isn't included but the boxes always have a big logo "full game download" on them below the logo of the game. It's not on this one.

Edit : Well actually i checked and the pokemon one doesn't... but still. Idk weird they would be using old logos of the AaA book.. as the MAIN logo for the design

I'm not sure about your second point (I've never bought a special edition), but this console is probably less than four months out. This could be very early production. It's pretty common. The Switch Lite backplate leaked several months ahead of time for example.

It won't launch a whole month before the game does and the game is out in 5 and a half. Lite was a new system so it had to start before then for an actual launch of a revision. I don't think we've had full leaks like that and this early for a bundle. I'm not saying it HAS to be fake but like no one questioning it is crazy.

I think you added an extra month. It's practically January. January, February, March, April, and a week and a half in May. The Splatoon 3 OLED launched two weeks before the game did. So roughly four months out.

That zen garden pattern is everywhere. I love the spiritual Shinto influence of this game.

Since you're the lore person, I have one question of great importance: can Zelda see Koroks? Asking for a friend.

Also, I think that SE OLED is really neat. Surprised people are hating on it (wonder how much that is just bitterness that it isn't their Switch 2 fantasy), especially those missing the point about the gross green pattern on the left joy-con that is referencing Link's arm. I'm not buying a new Switch just for that, but I'd totally buy the joy-cons if they were sold separately.

133 days to go.

the special edition OLED models don't come with the game (yes, really)

also, there's a chance these were manufactured in anticipation of the original 2022 launch, which would explain how one got out so early

Not super into lore, and I know you asked Serif, but if I remember, Zelda is the first person to see Hestu in Age of Calamity. AoC is an alternate universe/timeline, but I'd say that's a good indicator that she can in BoTW and/or TotK.

I think so. Aside from being able to see Hestu in AoC as mentioned above, she was the one who put the Malice damaged Master Sword in the pedestal to heal it and communicates with the Great Deku Tree. I guess if she was able to either bypass or traverse the Lost Woods to get to Korok Forest and she has the Deku Tree's trust, then she may be able to see the koroks. I also think it's related to being a child / being 'pure of heart' which both Link and Zelda both are.

I'd say a lot of people including myself, are not completely sold on its legitimacy. However, looking at the high attention to detail, and after scrutinizing things I think it's likely real. Like, I'm 75% sure it's real.

If those leaked images were fake, they would’ve shown a fake Switch 2.
It’s just a special edition OLED. It’s real.

The crest for the Sky Kingdom has elements of the Hylian crest, which leads me to imagining the Sky Kingdom being Hyrule sized but with more verticality... That'd put the "same overworld" fears to rest in a big way xD .

That zen garden pattern is everywhere. I love the spiritual Shinto influence of this game.

Same, I loved the mysticism in Skyward Sword and am glad to see that returning. Imagine if TotK contrasts that ethereal lightness in the Sky Kingdom with Breath of the Wild's solemness on Hyrule - Ancient Cistern XXL baybeee.

Zelda Team has a unique knack of making their games artful like this in a tastefully understated way. Haven't found a lot of devs that are able to do that.

Tragic.

Since the symbol we've already seen bears some resemblance to old kanji for 'time':

Time to do some digging for kanji that could resemble this new symbol.

At the very least, I think it's another 'rune'.

I really wish this person took out the dock from the box and took photos of it too. I don't get why someone would get a hold of a product, open it up, but not show possibly the most interesting part.
