....the whole genre?? 😳

@Red Monster Here are some others I think you might enjoy

This is such a good vibe. This is what I'd call "late night coffee shop" jazz, possibly with rain involved. In college I worked as a grader for a few semesters, and I would take tests to grade to a local coffee shop at night and completely chill to music like this, it was wonderful.

Bio is super helpful against hell house
yeah I've now read and watched some guides, almost killed it a bit ago but accidentally targeted the wrong enemy... I'm going to sleep now lol

Everyone in the guides has more+better materia than I do and I go into the fight with 6 and 10 MP so it's extra hard I guess. Thanks for the tip though, I'll try to combine bio with the strategy I'm using rn!

I'm still annoyed they didn't put in a Ring Fit character 😠
Ring Fit Trainee is a safe bet for the next Smash game, but Ring Fit Adventure was just too recent to have been considered for Ultimate’s DLC, unfortunately. It’s amazing we even got an ARMS rep with that game having not even gotten a sequel yet!

Holiday Jazz Day 5: Duke Ellington “Sugar Rum Cherry (Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy)”

Just an amazing rendition of The Nutcracker Suite with Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. Especially love the way the woodwinds play at the forefront and the brass serves as that whimsical “fairy dance” sound you get. Harry Carney is exceptional on what I assume is the baritone saxophone (maybe it’s the bass clarinet. I’m not an expert on this stuff).

Finally outgrew my 64 GB microSD card for my Switch and the new 128 GB card arrived today. I'm kinda amazed it took nearly 6 years for that to happen.

Clearly this means we're getting new hardware announced next year

Sir this is a Wendy's
:ROFLMAO:
Well done, you've earned this blog post of Ben Chandler (an exquisite pixel artist for indie point & click adventure games if you're not heard the name before) waxing eloquent about making maps in RPGs, specifically Might & Magic

A rep and an Assist Trophy even!

One of the things I really like about the Switch is that it feels like a harmonious fusion of old school and blue ocean era Nintendo.

Its use of modern hardware for its time and ambitious traditional software recalls the SNES and N64 era, while at the same time its focus on accessibility and broad appeal folds the expanded audience neatly into its design philosophy in a way that allows both to coexist symbiotically.

From enthusiast gamers to casual players, children to the elderly, and all walks of life, it really feels like a system where all are welcome, and that's really cool.

I think I said this last year, but dang the Game Awards start early. It’s live from LA and the pre show starts at 4:30 in the afternoon California time! I could swear that a few years ago it was several hours later

@Mandos I admire you. Not just because you have a nice collection but because you seemingly have the ability to bend time so you can enjoy all of this stuff. That or we're going to see on a special episode of Hoarders.

Space Battleship Yamato (Star Blazers) 2199 is such a good series. It's my go to when I just want something to watch but can't decide on anything. I liked 2202 but it wasn't as good. I didn't like the changes in the art direction.

Just had a nice forty minute session with fallen order. Felt good to play something.

Sorry @Mr_No_U i’m back to playing games again.

I was tinkering with some things oh my deck for a while but I’m actually playing some stuff now

Black Friday sucked for me this year. Nothing on my wishlist went on sale on any major retailers. If anything a few of my wishlist items actually increased in price at some stores. So besides the yearly purchase of Pokemon, I only got a SWOLED. I was planning on buying it next year with my tax return but ended up buying it early.

I still haven’t watched 2202 but Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato, the movie it’s based on, is one of my favorite animated movies. Yamato II (the TV remake of Farewell) was good too but the finale wasn’t anywhere near as impactful imo.

Man I would love to watch Slayers again but I worry it won't hold up much
It holds up pretty well as someone who watched the first 2 seasons last year(albeit dubbed) for the first time. No overly perv jokes or moments, just solid comedy and goofiness

Edit: also the revised light novels are being released in English, the newer versions with continuity retcons

I believe 2202 is based off the TV series so you might not like the finale to it.

Oh damn, that reward is worth like 50 yeahs. Especially since map design is something I'm kinda struggling with.

Maybe what I watched was from a later incarnataion? There was Lina and Naga as her traveling companion and usually at least one joke about Lina's body. Which usually resulted in someone getting exploded in retaliation but I don't know how well that plays these days.

I'll probably pick up Crisis Core Reunion at some point but not at launch. It liked the original on PSP but it's a weird game. It makes a great first impression. Playing it just for a bit feels right but as you get further into the game and dive more into its systems, things start to not mesh well with each other. Then there's the story. What should be a pretty simple story gets convoluted real quick on Nomura fashion. I think Retronauts described the story well by saying that the game tries to hard to mirror the big moments in FF VII and it makes the game feel less unique and special, while also taking away those same moments from the original game.

Does anyone know if there’s any performance benefit to having save data / update data / dlc data on the system memory vs. the microSD slot if you’re playing a physical copy? I vaguely remember people found that digital copies of games can load faster from the system memory but I don’t remember if anyone ever investigated physical games.

My gut says it doesn’t matter either way since the cartridge is probably the bottleneck but if anyone knows a definitive answer I’d love to hear it!

Neat thing about implementing new features into your older code - it can expose issues where an existing function is called more times than it's meant to be.

I'm adding an enemy ability that raises all nearby enemies' attack by 20%, so I tested it out and the skeletons who do 5 damage normally suddenly did about 7000 after 2 rounds. Turns out the buff was being called 4 times per enemy in battle because I was missing a short .05 second delay necessary between turns.

Fascinating stuff.

DF actually did it

Basically, internal memory will always be better, so I guess that applies for loading other data too

In every test, we got the same hierarchy of results: reading from the game cartridge was the slowest method, while the internal storage was the fastest. The two Micro SD cards we tested offered near-identical times, a little faster than the cartridge but slower than internal storage, sometimes by an appreciable margin.

TotK of the Kingdom
Tears of the Kingdom of the Breath of the Wild of the Sword of the Skyward of the Princess of the Twilight of the Waker of the Wind of the Ocarina of the Time of the Triforce of the Gods of the Adventure of the Link of the Fantasy of the Hyrule of the Legend of the Zelda

Chapter 22 of Kid Icarus Uprising cleared at 9.0! It was super tough but I managed. Now only 23 and 24 left. I did a test run of 23 and it doesn’t seem that bad but still, sometimes you just get rekt on this game.

I buy physical whenever possible, and I filled up my 128 GB quite a while ago. Granted I think it was Mortal Kombat and Rocket League that took up like 45GB combined.

I bought a 1TB back over the summer that I am saving for the next round of hardware. I figure it will be easy to transfer stuff if I just wait to use it.

Just sent the latest and greatest draft to our actress and her team! Super proud of the work my cowriters and I put in over the past two days. Cut five pages total, brought the inciting incident down from page 30 to 26 through scene trims, and did a dialogue and comedy pass. If she is over the moon about this draft, it's Hulu time before the holidays 🙏

It has to be some sort of sign that we finished this revision on the same night as our next Hulu movie's premiere, right?

Eh, that’s not as impressive, considering there are a number of other one-off games that got Assist Trophies. But getting a playable fighter from an IP that wasn’t already an established franchise with multiple games was unprecedented prior to Min Min.

another thread was posting 2022 top game lists from magazines and such so I figured I should post my controversial 2022 top ten

games I played in 2022, so not necessarily 2022 releases

10. Elechead
the gimmick slaps and the design is good! short but a delight

9. Tunic
this is a begrudging spot because some things were truly masterful! but I have a lot of little qualms that reaaally bothered me in the end

8. Kirby & the Forgotten Land
I didn’t love it at first tbh, but when things ramped up, it was a delight. top tier ending — even just that would get a spot on the list.

7. Islets
why is nobody talking about Islets?!?!? go play Islets!!!!! wasn’t sure about it at first but ended up having a really great time

6. Ring Fit Adventure
they made it fun and avoided so many pitfalls. it really is incredible.

5. OlliOlli World
wasn’t a fan of the previous games but this one is just so much fun. terminally millennial dialogue and setpieces aside (with occasional enjoyment), I could play this till my fingers were stumps

4. Pokémon Legends Arceus
a bear will chase you off a cliff and it will hurt. a forest god can break your spine for throwing bath bombs at it. finally — a Pokémon game where you can own your deathwish.

3. Disco Elysium
I’m so mad that this was so good. I was so ready to hate it but it fucking got me. ACAB as always but… damn.

2. Dead Cells
I’ve had the game for years but didn’t really get deep into it until this year. and holy shit. what a good choice. it feels truly vast now.

1.5. Death’s Door
I can’t remember if we played it this year or last year or both, but holy shit, this ended up being fantastic. I wrote my list without it until I got confused about years, so this is a better-safe-than-sorry last-minute addition at damn-near number one

1. Elden Ring
so this was actually way better than I anticipated. and I thoroughly enjoy Dark Souls. absolute win, holds a place in my mind, and I’ve poured a lot of time into it. I’ll be going back sometime soon, I’m sure — didn’t get all the way to the end. but really. truly. wow.

Was just thinking earlier that the “Switch outsells PS4” threads will probably start appearing early next year.

Boy those are going to be something.

This is the correct way to make GotY lists and I will not be persuaded otherwise

I would actually not be shocked if there were an anime about a blue bird playing lacrosse
Unfortunately not. There's not even an anime about regular humans playing lacrosse. (There are a few manga, though.)

It should happen next time Nintendo reports numbers, so early February. The Switch should also overtake the og GameBoy line at the same time, and Switch's software total should become the first Nintendo system to exceed 1 billion software units, overtaking the Wii and DS software totals.

A pretty notable bunch of milestones coming up and they could all be hit in the same report.

how the fuck did I spend 4 hours from 10pm to 2am fighting one boss yesterday and I didn't even beat it
I had something similar with an Ender Lillies boss recently. Took me back to the feeling of bashing my head against a brick wall in various games as a kid. “I know the patterns, I know what to do, why can’t I do it’ :D

honestly at this point I should've beaten it BUT it's also a little bullshit especially because I'm trapped and can't recover MP before the fight anymore... and sometimes the AI character just gets themselves killed WHY ARE YOU BLOCKING CLOUD, JUST DODGE!!!
