@Suswave is okay, thank the abyss

I was worried after OlliOlli World was nominated for a Keighly and we didn't hear from you at all.
after my immense ST effort last year, I can no longer give elf keighley’s league of extraordinary video game of the year edition of the year show awards of show the of the year the of awards of the year the attention it demands

plus β€œwestern media attitudes” nine times out of ten make me want to do the mortal shuffle

I’m glad the devs are getting recognized! I’m gonna keep telling y’all to play it! but I see no reason to do a shit-the-bed kickflip yawp over a nomination I have little stake in for an awards show I’m not keen on liking or trusting

I bought 12 Angry Men due to a criterion collection sale.

Pretty excited to see this film. Been wanting to forever but never had a chance. Seems perfect for that thanksgiving break where we have free time before the family gathering starts.

Should’ve bought The Irishman too. But maybe next time.
Hell yeah, 12 Angry Men is in my top 15. Please report back once you've given it a look! And if you haven't already seen Network from Sidney Lumet, do yourself a HUGE favor and watch that one next haha. Wall-to-wall electric monologues and performances.

I am also exhausted and waking life is a bloodbath

my gripes aren’t entirely warranted, and I recognize the immense effort and feat that the keighleys are

and you bet your ass my tone will change at least a liiiittle bit should I someday find myself nominated for one

but the whole flavor of the show being action-packed adathon with the uber-serious β€œWORLD PREMIERE” foolery and deep voice abundant doesn’t do it for me

I also don’t like awards shows pretty much full stop

do I lose famicoin if I triple-post

edit: DAMMIT @belly!!!

Ah yeah, I get it, and I'm quite critical of the Keighlys myself. I just figured if any game would get you jazzed to be recognized, it'd be OlliOlli World, which I have to keep googling to check the spelling for because I keep losing track of the proper number of l's

good thought and fair guess! I just give less of a shit than the polls suggest

then again, there is no perfect predictive model

on the subject of OlliOlli World I’m watching my partner shred in leagues right now and I misread the username of the person they’re trying to beat

thought it was MyNameIsURL but no such luck

Your gripes are mostly warranted and you should keep saying it. The Game Awards, from the half-hearted focus of being Winter E3 Summer Games Fest combined with a half-hearted award that barely focuses on the awards but also has some really confusing and kinda meaningless categories just does not do it for me either.

...with the caveat that I would probably still attend if I had a game that was nominated.

I posted it in the Game Awards thread earlier, but Mike Williams wrote a good post today on why the Game Award nominees turn out the way they do.

What's standing out to me is how totally opposite this sounds from the gripes about the Oscars. πŸ˜… It's probably an oversimplification but the article seems to point towards time availability in the lives of the people nominating causing them to not be able to play every game except for the very noteworthy ones, which means only the big can't-miss juggernauts get noms. Arthouse entries and passion projects from auteurs get lost in the fray as the ceremony gets dominated by only the most popular, not necessarily the highest quality or most affecting. Then nerds like me complain that TGA is nothing more than an expensive ego trip for the industry.

As opposed to the Oscars where they're generally so full of arthouse entries that they end up seeming out of touch with the moviegoing public, thus decreasing their mainstream relevance and building complaints that it's nothing more than an expensive ego trip for the industry.

Which is correct? I don't know and I'm going to bed.

I always found this accusation on the Oscars a bit harsh, if you look at the nominations (and even winners) for Best Picture you have quite a lot of blockbusters, and it was always the case. The Oscars noms always leave one or two great movies out, especially if they're coming from little studios who don't have the money to campaign, but usually they're a pretty good indicator of what are the best american movies of the year. As you pointed out, the main difference between both ceremonies is that, given the length of a movie, the Academy can experience a lot more movies than outlets can experience games.

But also, it seems from the Patreon post that the same people vote in every category for the Game Awards, while for the Oscars it only goes like that for Best Picture. Editors vote for editing, actors for acting, etc... Maybe they should do something like that for VGA as well. Don't get the press and influencers to vote, get professionals of the game industry.

Another job interview tomorrow, give me strength cause I'm gonna need it
The best of luck to you!

Yeah in addition to time availability the games that people want to read about the most rise to the top as more people need to play them to support the increased coverage.

If you think about it further, with media outlets getting less staff as the corporations keep cutting them, that limits the pool even further. Say your staff was 20 people five years ago and now is maybe 8. The amount of voices and thus variety of games played gets reduced.

Some new people did join the pool this year who shapes the nominations. Hopefully that keeps thoughtfully expanding and rounds things out a bit.

Bayonetta 3 update: I do not like how Viola plays. I love the character, but i have serious problems adjusting to her playstyle compared to Bayonetta. But she has a move that makes catching the witch familiar animals super easy, so that's nice.

Anyway, the weeks until christmas are going to be annoying. My younger ones want the Pokemon games on friday, but Mrs. and I already said no ... not that they're going to accept this. I've already pre-ordered the double pack for them, but it's going to be their christmas gift.

They've been told that they have enough games to play ... and i gotta be honest, saying this while i'm sitting on the backlog of the century myself feels a bit hypocritical. But in the end it's only an excuse, as they get what they want ... just a bit later.

Being a parent is difficult.

What's your Comfy Game of the Year?

Mine has to be either Triangle Strategy or Tactics Ogre: Reborn.
I have 3:

1) Dungeon Encounters. Not because the game itself is comfortable, but because it was perfect for after work couch play while the dog had a nap on me. So it makes me think of comfy times.

2) Kirby and the Forgotten Land. For obvious reasons.

3) Xenoblade Chronicles 3. I've been playing this game since launch, gradually, and now 105 hours in I'm cleaning up side quests which means revisiting old locations. It feels like a world I've inhabited for a long time, and so it's become a comfortable place to be.

Pentiment looks amazing. DEFINITELY going to try it out once I finish Bayo3. And Deathloop. And PokΓ©mon. And NieR: Automata.

It's not going to happen, is it.

Add it to the backlog so you can schedule to play it one day before a future new one!

Looks like Steamworld Headhunter has been delayed to 2024, that sure was announced early.
Makes me wonder if it is bound for Switch at all or if they aim for the succ.

Curious as to what the unannounced Steamworld coming for consoles H1 next year is though, that's exciting.

I honestly had no idea this was announced, just watched the teaser trailer and it looks like it will be fun. Very interested to see what they can do with a Steamworld game in 3D. Personally I'm still hoping for a Steamworld Dig 3, but if the team has decided they've done all they can with than genre I get it.

Yeah, I really want to try Pentiment, but I'm not done with XBC 3 and stockpiled Switch games. Might sub to GamePass anyway and aim to play Pentiment and Tunic next month.

I dropped Tunic. I liked it but I wasn't really feeling it that much. It's one of those games that I think you need to be in the mood for and stick with it for a bit and I clearly wasn't (I tried it after playing"similar" games such as Death's Door and -more or less- Sekiro). One of those that I'll need to replay at some point

Think about it this way.

Pentiment is a game all about making choices, and seeing how those choices affect the narrative.

By choosing to play Bayonetta 3, Deathloop, Pokemon and Nier Automata first, you're already kind of playing Pentiment in real life! Except without the old-timey art style, but I'm sure you look better as a realistic person anyway.

Just realized, next first party game I'm going to buy as of right now is Tears of the Kingdom, that's 6 months out eek.

Luckily there's a bunch of third party games that will release in the time frame so I should be good anyway.

It scares me a bit, Gunk was pretty mediocre. Hopefully return to the steamworld franchise brings back their A-game.

Yeah I'm hoping the game releasing H1 next year is a proven game, Dig 3, Heist 2 or perhaps Tower Defense 2, I'd take that as well.

My comfy game of the year must be Xenoblade DE. I know it sounds like a weird answer but exploring the huge areas of the game, with beautiful vistas and lovely music, was very comfy.

I’d love to be wrong but I really truly don’t think we’ll get anything major from Nintendo at the game awards. Maybe something! but I don’t think any of the things people are looking for.

Completely agree. Maybe something on the tier of Bravely Default 2 but nothing more.

In other news I recorded the sound of my kitchen sink whining to use in my game for something, thought it was a cool and weird sound.

A new third party exclusive would be pretty neat, to be fair. I'm just not sure what could emerge at this point, other than yet more RPG support from Square Enix.

Zelda TK is The Game Awards thing this year. There’s a few other potential contenders like Prime Remastered and Goldeneye (especially if the remake hits both Xbox and Switch), but I think this is Zelda’s show. It’ll play well there and they want as many eyes on it as possible especially those not normally tuned into Nintendo Directs. 2020 was Sephiroth (Smash is a 30 million seller) and 2021 was Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak (DLC for a 10+ million seller), Zelda fits the recent colossal game showcase trend too.

I think a trailer for TOTK would make sense. It's Nintendo's next huge thing and it's releasing in half a year. No new reveals.

Anyone whose been playing Ragnarok think that the one character you meet is a BOTW reference?

skjoldr is the characters name

this is absolutely the canonical best approach to sound design

or at least how I sound design

walk around with a Zoom H2n and say β€œbruh that sounds fucking weird” and just record shit

also how I make my more unhinged software instruments

I will bet you my teeth that it won’t be there
