Previews SMT V Previews

I'm so frustrated that there isn't any place here to pre-order a physical copy yet. I hope I can do that before the release.

Unfortunately SMTV is a game that I absolutely must have in physical form.

First 90+ meta JRPG since P5?🤔
Now don't get too excited lmao.

I still expect the scores to not be as high because it won't be as appealing as Persona 5. P5 had everything going for it plus it's hard for Jrpgs to hit that 90+ metacritic score.

87-89 at most (so the same range as all other high scoring games this year lol). Could be lower, because it doesn't pull punches and is unrelentingly bleak, and I imagine that might rub some people the wrong way

😏

That sounds great and adds a needed change of pace for the Jrpg landscape. The atmosphere is unparalleled in SMT that's for sure.

But yea I agree with what you mentioned.

If Dread couldn't make it to 90, I don't see this doing it.

I know they are two very different kinds of games, but that's the point, Dread is far more "mainstream friendly" than SMTV will be.

I would like for this to at least match Arise as the highest rated JRPG of the year

It’s been really solid for JRPGs the last few years. I look back to a decade ago when good ones felt few and far between. Is that just my dodgy memory? I don’t know. It just feels like the genre is in a good place at the moment.

Funny to hear this considering it was only yesterday when people said Metroid isn't appealing to mainstream audiences lol.

Still, I can see it. Then again Metroid does have its bleakness and isolation aspects.

Metroid doesn't really have that much mainstream appeal

But SMT has less

No, you're right, the PS4 (and then the Switch) did headline a resurgence for the genre on consoles.
  • Persona 5
  • Tales of Arise
  • Dragon Quest XI
  • Kingdom Hearts 3
  • Nier Automata
  • Octopath Traveler
  • Bravely Default II
  • Final Fantasy VII Remake
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 2
  • Xenoblade Chronicles: Torna, The Golden Country
  • Fire Emblem: Three Houses
  • Valkyria Chronicles 4
  • Yakuza: Like a Dragon
  • Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana
  • Ys IX: Monstrum Nox
  • Trails of Cold Steel (I-IV)
  • NEO: The World Ends With You
  • Monster Hunter Stories 2
And now SMT5, and these are just off the top of my head, I'm sure there's loads more I am missing.

I wonder if those new Atlus fans who come from Persona 5 will actually dig this. Anecdotally speaking, I remember seeing that many people thought the dungeons were the least interesting aspect of P5.

I checked out the r/megaten sub and there seems to be a bit of a divide in the Atlus community between the MegaTen and the Persona folks. Frankly, reading that sub felt like oldschool Atlus fans gatekeeping the MegaTen franchise.

Not sure I agree with that

I'm just saying Metroid has more mainstream appeal than SMT.

Not that Metroid actually has much, lol. Just that SMT has even less of that.

Metroid doesn't really have that much mainstream appeal

But SMT has less
This basically.

I am going to die if Konami doesn't release a Tokimeki Memorial: Forever With You localization like tomorrow so people can stop pretending Atlus invented anything going on in Persona and thus expecting it from everything they do

If this happens and I am alive through November, I will be excited to play SMTV

damn, do you thinkits above or below 540p?
Honestly, no idea. The image quality is noticeably softer on this than on many other games I play, but a lot of that probably has to do with the art style and post processing effects as well.

All I can do is compare it to other similar games on the system. In which case I'd say the image is a little (but noticeably) worse than DQXIS, but sharper than Xenoblade or Xenoblade 2

It does really feel like almost all my favourite series have had a decent entry (relatively) recently. And I’m looking at Triangle Strategy for March too, and feeling pretty positive about that after the demo, the request for feedback and seeing the changes to the interface. Plus SMTV. There’s also an Experience dungeon crawl out in January, Undernauts. Its just a great time to be a fan of the genre.

I played both Bravely Default II and Monster Hunter Stories 2 this year. Sure, I could point out things they could have done better, but both were an improvement on the prior game and also really sweet and heartwarming. That’s something I’d started to really miss in rpgs. I like the darkness of SMT etc but it’s cool to have the camaraderie and warmth in addition to the cynicism too.

Yeah I can't see this getting 90+ on MC or OC. It's not going to be more mainstream than P5, and there will no doubt be some critics will either want it to be more like Persona or be turned off by the difficulty.

Anecdotally speaking, I remember seeing that many people thought the dungeons were the least interesting aspect of P5
It's because they are, and the pacing/gameplay loop don't let you enjoy the dungeons despite they are not generic this time. Like, if someone dislike P5 dungeons, liked the battle system and understand SMT lack the social aspect of modern Persona there is a chance that person will enjoy SMT V, and maybe the dungeons too, because dungeon exploration and battles mix well in usual SMT games.

Yeah, Triangle looks excellent so far as well. There's also Final Fantasy XVI, Re: Fantasy, Yakuza 8, Xenoblade 3, and the new Trails games coming up.

Plus in my last post I forgot about Disgaea 5 and 6, all the Atelier games, Shin Sakura Wars, 13 Sentinels (does this count?), and I'm sure there's more.

Yeah maybe. Personally, I really enjoyed most dungeons.

That new Dragon Quest III HD remake looks good too, I’ve never played that before so it’s going to feel like a whole new DQ to me!

Yup. And XII is coming too!

There was only a resurgence for JRPGs if you look through the narrow lense of home consoles. They were always thriving on handhelds, and that includes SMT as a series.
Yeah I made sure to specify I was talking about consoles lol

Love how people are saying the game is bleak as fuck. One of my favorite aspects about the franchise!

Oh for sure, I mostly use portables too and the DS/PSP had tons, but remember a decade ago being slim pickings on home consoles. I picked up several in a row on PS3 that I just ended up abandoning for some reason or another.

Did you see how parts of the Persona community reacted when TWEWY Neo was announced? 🤣

I remember playing the DQ11 demo and thinking it looked okay. As long as this doesn't reach xeno 2 levels I should be fine

UE4 on Switch strikes again, it seems. I'll be fine, I guess, but it's still a bit disappointing to read about the resolution.

I beat Tokyo Mirage Sessions at 720p/30 FPS last year. What a miserable port and the game wasn't even that good.
