News Nintendo Direct: The Super Mario Bros. Movie | 10/6 1:05 p.m. PT

Finally watched the Direct. Thoughts:

  1. They've been working on this for 7 years, meaning this was setup as part of Iwata's push to diversify the company's offerings: https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2...tendos_position_in_the_entertainment_industry

So once again "Thank you Iwata!"
  2. Pratt sounded like he may have ripped a bong before his interview during the pre-roll.
  3. Visuals look great and totally in-line with what Nintendo's in-house teams have been doing for CGI since the GameCube era (y)
  4. Loving the characterization with Bowser where there's definitely a feel of him being a serious threat
  5. That said, Jack Black sounds like he's trying a little too hard to sound like Jim Cumming's Pete voice which is a little off-putting. But it does kinda work for the character
  6. Not sold yet on Pratt's work. It's fine, but that's not my Mario.
  7. Also not a big fan of the facial redesign of Mario where he looks slightly closer to Fix-It Felix now.
  8. Luigi I think sounded better but there was so little of it to really form a cohesive opinion.
Overall, I thought this looks solid and enjoyable. I don't think I'll go opening weekend because I've been to enough things like PAX to expect maximum cringe for something like this. Second weekend however? I'm there.

No major studio is going to finance a multi-film franchise with a silent protagonist.
Why would Mario be silent? He could just talk less than possibly expected. This doesn’t have to be a binary between he talks all the time and he only wahoos and let’s a go’s!

Edit: if there’s a confusion here with this reply. I never said he should be silent. Clix interpreted my post for him talking less as me advocating for Mario to be a silent protagonist.

Edit 2: Ok reading over it again, it looks like I switched to advocating for a silent protagonist in my reply. I wanted to say less talking, than truly silent.

and if you go to his panels where he uses the Mario voice for an extended period of time, the voice goes from this is awesome and I can't believe I am seeing this voice done live to "okay, you can start talking normal again anytime now Charles..."

Because the Mario voice he does truly only works in very, very small doses. It's actually a pretty damn annoying voice when you hear it nonstop. This isn't a knock on Charles, it's just the way the voice is. It was not a voice created or intended to ever be used in a fully voiced situation. It also, ironically, never matched Mario's actual origin story. While he IS italian, that's just his heritage. He was born in New York, raised in Brooklyn, and never speaks italian. Meaning he would realistically have a brooklyn accent, a pretty thick one, not an italian one.

BUt people never nitpicked on it because nobody cared about Mario story stuff until this movie.

Well going on and on with a particular voice in a panel as opposed to following a script is entirely different as well. Though I agree that listening to it with full on dialogue as it is in the panels does get a little grating. Not particularly bad, but outweighs it’s welcome as well. But I also don’t expect Mario having any lengthy monologue in the movie either so it may be moot regardless.

But point is, it was going to sound strange no matter what because of the voice we’ve grown accustomed to for so many years. Mario’s “Here We Come!” would have been perfect for Charles’ Mario, so odd just hearing it differently, for example.

Hopefully everyone will be able to just get past it and used to the new voice. Pratt didn’t even sound bad imo, just different, which would have been the case no matter who was cast.

We have, as a matter of fact, not. Odyssey is the closest to do it and it does it by simply leaving everything up to interpretation that requires a meta knowledge of the franchise history to even get the implication of the nods.
the mario and luigi and paper mario games are all story driven. people can and have done plots for mario before

everything is always connected to media and cultural artifacts, but film / tv as a whole is absolutely a deeper cut into the US psyche than games are
Absolutely spot on. WWII's impact on Japanese cultural output is a well-documented example too.

"It's been nearly 40 years since the original Mario Brothers game released in Japan. Today, lots of people around the world are playing Mario games, thank you all so much".
Just looked this up and April 4th, 1983 in Japan. Kind of amazing that the US release date is closer to the anniversary than Japan's (4/28/2023).

Maybe it's because I'm not an English native speaker, Mario's voice doesn't bother me that much. Also, we've only heard 2 very short lines from Chris Mario so far, so I think it's still too early to judge the voice performance 🤔

But is it enough to free us from the Crisp Ratt? Is it???
I might have missed something or missing some context (I’m french, bear with me). Like, this is the new low we’re going for. Calling him a rat.

There’s some very unlikeable people who also love to describe -and call- people they dislike as « rats », even if that’s because of a pun with his name.

  • B… but Pratt is going to a homophobic church !
  • Wow, no shit Sherlock ! Newsflash : 100% of every fucking religions are homophobic and transphobic ! Tom Cruise too goes to a church. Nancy Cartwright too. Mahershala Ali is muslim and he played in Moonlight, a movie about a black gay child, yet Islam is, just like other religions, not kind with gay people (ask how many gays are KILLED in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Mauritania, Kenya and Iran) ! Yet I haven’t seen anybody harass Tom Cruise, Nancy and Mahershala (and rightfully so because he is awesome) nor calling them names and constantly mock them every single fucking day.

I am gay, one of my ex is muslim and we HAD to break because of his family and his « friends » getting close to find out that their son wasn’t going out with a woman but a white dude, and not a single one of them was very friendly about it (his father almost removed him from his family because the police thought he was involved with a weed dealer). Yet I’m not harassing any muslim because of that. You’re not seeing me screaming at believers because they believe in what they want, nor calling them names that would give trump’s fanboys a boner.

Off course you can mock Pratt’s acting anytime (I never had to deal with it since his french voice actor is pretty good), there’s nothing blocking your way. Just, for fucks sake, what on earth are you on with this hate campaign ?

FR. I saw so many people praising top gun and cruise is just as equally as terrible as pratt if not more. Oh well.

I was much more impressed than I expected. Granted, that’s a low bar, but there was plenty to like here. The movie seems gorgeous, Mario’s face aside, and the voice talent in the trailer is not bad! Jack Black is a fantastic Bowser, and Keegan Michael Key is surprisingly solid as Toad. Pratt just sounds like any other A-List celeb voicing a cartoon character so their name can appear on the poster.

So, some good, not much bad. I’m excited?

Animation without or with very little talk is an art that i dont think ppssible in a children's film due to how children would react.
It is. It worked for Wall-E, but he was also a robot, and it was a different type of film. My favorite Pixar movie, but it’s also their most experimental. This is not an experimental movie.

Nah that’s a lack of imagination to say it’s not feasible. The focus could be on other characters and the world itself like in the RPGs even if Mario is still the lead. He could be a character filled with wonder and interest in what he is experiencing or he could be more stoic if they wanted. If the bros are together for most of the film, you could have Luigi do most of the talking. We don’t know how much of the film will be taken up by musical numbers either which will fill the runtime up quickly.

See, that’s not the type of movie I want to watch. And I guess neither would most of it’s target audience - which is kids and family. One of the reasons video game adaptations don’t work out so hot IMO is because they try to stick too closely to the source material. Sonic tried to change it up with its formula, but that was also a very dull (IMO) movie filled with humor straight out of “what’s trending on social media” that we can wink to.

That’s what I like about the games, but for a feature? Nah I want to see Mario alive like the others. What works in a game doesn’t work in a movie. That would work best as funny experimental five minutes shorts. It’s not lack of imagination, it would just be a misfire to do so just to please adult video game fans.

They... they just called him a rat, man. You're flying off the handle like they showered slurs on him and threatened to kill his family or something lol. I'm not sure if calling someone a rat has different connotations in French, but it is entirely just a funny play on words with his name in this case

Looks really well done (watched it 3 times with my kid). He was glued to the screen as was I. Going to be a fun time and quite successful from the buzz I see from the trailer.

I think some of the other problems that we see with earlier, even current, comic films, anime, or vg adaptations is the lack of care to said source material or not understanding/liking the source material. It takes very skilled & deft hands to translate it to another medium.

As someone who grew up with the Mario cartoons, the voice isn't weirding me out. I also love that they're doing the whole Mario is from a different world just like in the cartoons.

The baby Mario and Luigi from Yoshi Island are just two mushroom kingdom babies named after the hero's :p

I’m glad as a society we are ready to admit that bowser is hot.
“You live in a timeline where Bowsette exists.”

Speaking of which, aside from people making fun of/loathing Pratt’s role as Mario, I do wonder how people feel about Toad and Luigi so far. Jack Black seems to have injected his own original flavor into Bowser, which I think is great. I’m curious about Peach.

Love Toad, wanna hear actual speaking Luigi, also curious about Peach.

That’s because Martinet voices Wario and does so perfectly. He gives Mario sound effects and some short one liners in a very over the top Italian accent. It’s fine for the games. But I’m with you, I don’t want to hear that fully voiced for 90 minutes. People are so obsessed with Martinet having to play him that they don’t think it through.

He’s amazing as Wario, and he’s great when having to give sound effects to a silent everyman protagonist.

Pratt sounds fine. Not over the top, but nothing too low key or jarring. Sounds like an everyman.
Oh yeah I love him as Wario and Waluigi. I just think his Mario voice is too... childish and high pitched, maybe? I just know I'd go insane if I had to hear him sustain that voice for an hour and a half movie lol

James H. Sawyer Sr. voiced Wario in this commercial, so maybe this is what Wario might sound like in the movies if they hired a new actor.

Toad is fine so far. I totally forgot it was Key (who I like). I think Day as Luigi will be a highlight, I already can hear his nervous screams perfectly in the clip they had.

Definitely curious about Peach, not familiar with her actress.

High five. Wall-E is the best Pixar film.

Mario trailer had me smiling. Like yeah, Chris Pratt’s voice could use more energy but otherwise it seems like a goofy fun time. Still chuckling at “that is but a taste of our fury.”

Finally got to see it, and the gulf of difference in my excitement for Bowser and Mario is hilarious. If the movie sucks, at least we'll have cool-looking Jack Black Bowser. Also glad to see some more diverse enemies, I figured it'd just Koopas + Goombas only but I love the Dry Bones inclusion.

There's a far jump from calling someone "Crisp Rat" to someone doing a "hate campaign."

FYI, I think we should allow folks who feel marginalized by others to have their own reactions instead of tone policing or using respectability politics. Literally nobody is hurt by a major movie star with a troubled history (gestures vaguely to Mondo's post on this very page outlining some very disturbing twitter follows) being called a nickname very close to his real name.

I kind of feel like I was the only poster who didn't care for the trailer. It just felt very much like a generic kid's movie to me. I thought the trailer for Sonic made it look not great and I ended up really enjoying both Sonic movies. So maybe this one will be more enjoyable for me as a full movie, too. It just reminded me a lot of the Angry Birds movie with some Minions humor thrown in. I was really hoping for a little more spirit or whimsical quality like the games. I guess it feels like it could have been made as is (CGI aside) 20 years ago with the same script. So I dunno. I was pretty disappointed. I'm hoping it will end up more appealing to me but I'm not optimistic at this point.

Even with the trailer out there’s still leaks dropping in.

Interesting if they are real (have my doubts as anyone could show any real or knockoff Mario series of toys) we are seeing our first indication of what could be Lumas. Unless they are redone Boo’s. Could hint at Rolalina at least. Also showing things like karts with Toad and Mario. Wonder if they have a part they ride in them

If I started posting Three Percenters stuff and someone decided to call me "chocolate_poopra" I would understand.
I'd be like "okay yeah I see where this is coming from."

In 5 months from now you could be watching a show or video, but it takes a commercial break and now you got to watch 2 ads.

First ad is the Mario Movie and you wonder how Jack Black sounds better as Bowser every time you hear him.

The next ad is a teaser for Tears of the Kingdom. After watching it you smile and think, "I still don't know wtf this game is about".

oh wow, they're going to the Lumas already??? That's an interesting choice. Makes me wonder if they'll jump to Galaxy content right away in a sequel, or maybe build it up to end a trilogy on or something.
Mario Movie 2: Basically Galaxy
Mario Movie 3: Bowser finds his way back to Mario's homeworld, with New Donk City vibes

So, just watched the trailer. I ... I like it?! Looks cute, the VAs are good, Black as Bowser sounds amazing.
Pratt as Mario is whatever, seems rather flat so far, but at least not offensively bad or cringeworthy.
The humor is spot on for me as well. Even the penguins worked well enough from what was shown.

I had zero expectations, now I'm genuinely and positively surprised! Very nice.

I think the early portions of Mario Movie 1 will be "New Donk" stuff with DK and Foreman Spike, the idea that this is the Mario Bros.' original home. We could have a return to that, could be interesting.

I wonder if Yoshi will be in this - could be the cute animal companion here, could be the big deal for the sequel. Maybe have Mario World, or a globetrotting Mario Odyssey like adventure for 2 and Space for 3? Lots of possibilities!
