Yeah I just looked at what was announced in that September 2019 direct, I still think it seems really solid. Xenoblade was a strong closer and Snes NSO was announced alongside quite a few cool games. Crazy to me some people think that was the worst.

Mostly old games and stuff we had seen before of the new ones.

I like how Nintendo saw us predicting double segments for Metroid and Zelda and decided to give us Pikmin instead lol
Imagine them doing that just to spite us. I love knowing Pikmin 4 is real, and I'm inching ever closer to buying Pikmin 3 DX. Joke's on you, Nintendo! You'll STILL get my mo--

Oh.

2019 wasn't horrible. September 2021 was worse IMO.

Oh boy....

Don't really want to dignify this kind of content with clicks and ad revenue. Am I right to assume they don't do their basic research and check out the history of these rumours properly?

Because we just got a new Fire Emblem announcement that was leaked with eerie accuracy earlier this year.

September 2019 is easily the worst direct of the Switch era for me, barring 2017 where they were still figuring the format out. 3rd party ports doesn't do it for me, and that's really all that direct had. I love Xenoblade, but closing on an undated remaster is pretty weak, and neither Pokemon nor Animal Crossing got particularly interesting showings to boot.

Smash was honestly the only other thing from that direct that really had me excited, and even then that was more of a given than anything.

Oh boy....

youtube video
do we really need to link those sorts of videos here?

we all know the “shit on insiders” video genre exists. it even has tropes: attribute anything one insider (who may or may not be trustworthy at all) says to all insiders; not actually understand what insiders are leaking versus simply predicting; and so on.

So Jeff is saying that the Zelda remaster stuff came from a new source and they didn't confirm it. They got too carried away with the idea and the speculating and "made a mistake." I've said this about Grubb when it comes to Nintendo, he does speculate a lot and he gets carried away because he loves speculating about Nintendo. It's really not that big of a deal tbh. They messed up and they'll probably learn from it.

He also said he will do better about mentioning what he hears when they are speculating(a bit of a paraphrase but essentially that he'll do better.)

I have typed and deleted so many posts about that video here lmao
instead how about this, it is funny that there are vocal groups that are so full of rage over this direct for not having zelda remasters or a metroid remakester and instead we got TWO NEW first party titles (FE:E, Pikmin 4) and a NEW Zelda trailer that is dropping soon.
This is the funniest direct fallout I think I have ever seen.

Lol Jeff. I love this guy.

Sounds like we are back to having no actual sources confirming these ports even exist. Feel like we do this every year. Someone claims their coming, it doesn't happen and then the sources end up being bad. So I don't think we have any active sources left that still claim these games are coming. Best just to move on. Glad I still have my Wii U copies. :(

lol

I thought Jeff said last week that he heard WW/TP from 2 sources, which makes sense why he seemed so certain on their appearance. I’ll find that quote later.

After watching some Sopranos with my brother and playing Splatoon 3 I had time to rewatch the Direct and formulate some semi-ordered thoughts. Most of the announcements didn't illicit any strong feelings one way or another. Overall I felt it was a rather bad presentation with some really good stuff in it.

The positive:
  • Octopath Traveler II: I love the first one so I'm very much looking forward to this. Once again great designs for the main cast and it's good to know that Yasunori Nishiki is back. Can't help but feel like they're putting out a tad bit too many of these HD-2D games but if the "intertwining stories" are done well, unlike the first one, I will gladly overlook that.
  • Theathrhythm: I was worried they had abandoned the series so this was a very welcome announcement. Getting all the songs could get pretty expensive but I'll just have to see once it's out. Not much to add here except yusss.
  • Pauline & Diddy in Strikers: Never got the game so I don't care as much but it's always nice to see these two get repped.
  • Pikmin 4: The white whale status of this game makes me overlook the horrible buildup and somewhat thin showing. Still, it feels very good to finally have some actual confirmation and even a release target. The change in camera perspective has me skeptical a little bit but for now I just want to be excited for a sequel to one of Nintendo's best games ever that will hopefully make its 2023 release.
  • Bayonetta 3: Look, I'm already getting this. What Nintendo needs to let me know is when I will also be able to buy the physical release of Bayo 1 in Switzerland.
  • Rain Code: I don't really care for Danganronpa, this looks more up my alley. Pretty cool concept and presentation, could be something special from its looks.
  • Radiant Silvergun: I have to stan Treasure at all times, no question about it. Will get it later this week even though I already have the game on Xbox.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom: As I said in the other thread, I love everything I'm seeing and I also like the name so this was pleasant to see again. But I'm ready to play it now so feel free to pull a Xenoblade 3 and move its release date up, Aonuma.

The mixed:
  • Late 3rd Party Ports: It Takes Two was very fun but this looks like a heavily compromised version of a game in which the visual spectacle is tantamount to its enjoyment. It's fine if they want to bring it to the Switch but I think they should have just waited for the next hardware. Very nice to finally get an official English release of Fatal Frame 4. I rolled my eyes at the jiggle physics in that one shot but I'm actually curious about this game. Tunic is fantastic and everyone should get it if you haven't played it. Various Daylife wasn't very good when I played it on Apple Arcade so an easy skip despite loving Team Asano's other games. Did not expect Sifu to show up at all so that's cool but I'm somewhat worried about the performance.
  • N64 on NSO: Did absolutely not expect them to release Pilotwings so that was a nice surprise. Stadium 2 is probably going to consume my brother and me. Goldeneye is very much a monkey paw's situation. After watching the leaked XBLA remakester footage over and over again getting the emulated N64 version on both Switch and Xbox (both compromised in some way) is a bummer.
  • Switch Sports Golf: 21 holes is nice, even though they seem to be based on the old Wii Sports + Resort courses which is a bit of a bummer. Survival Golf also looks nice. Sad about the delay and no other news (wink wink Dodgeball and Basketball). Hoping for more closer to the release of the update.
  • Kirby's Return to Dreamland Deluxe: It's no Planet Robobot but still good. What I don't understand is the weird new look. The black outline feels really out of place somehow but maybe I'll get used to it.

The negative:
  • Fire Emblem Engage: It looks much better than Three Houses graphically and I think I prefer the environmental art as well. The character art is full of misses, however, most prominently the garish main character. I also don't really like the Emblems hook at all. Coupled with the "divine dragon" stuff it's all giving me some unpleasant FE Fates flashbacks. Let's hope that it's more like Conquest in the gameplay department at least. After enjoying Three Houses a ton this was an extremely deflating start into the Direct. It's the first mainline Fire Emblem I'm considering outright skipping from what we've seen so far. Hopefully the FE4 remake exists and is more to my liking.
  • Front Mission: It's nice that they're giving these games another chance but Forever Entertainment's remakes just look completely lifeless and rob the games of their unique look. It's most apparent in the character portrait art but the 3D models have a weird look to them as well. They still have some time but I'm not very hopeful.
  • Everything Was Farming: There was literally not a single one of these games that interested me except Harvestella which we've already seen. I could maybe get excited for Rune Factory 6 but after how RF5 turned out on Switch I'm not exactly getting my hopes up. Really bizarre decision to have so many of these farming games in a single presentation.
  • Resident Evil Cloud versions: Why.
  • Tales of Symphonia: Having several PS3-level games that could easily run on Switch and forgoing those in favour of Symphonia is a very Bamco move.
  • No Advance Wars: I think everyone is past pretending that companies care about this. Just announce a release date already.
edit: whoops some of this was unfinished.
The reason the black outline is there is to pay homage to one of the cancelled Kirby games that led to RTDL's development.

Meanwhile at NOA:

"Bill, people are getting upset that Metroid Prime 1 and Zelda TP and WW weren't at the Direct. We haven't even made those for the Switch. Did you tell something to someone again? What do you have to say for yourself?"

"They were all wrong. Every big prediction, was wrong." Ok first of all, Emily and Nate have gotten Fire Emblem (WHICH WAS THERE) right. Second, this dude needs to be stopped.
Also, wasn't Grubb the guy who said a direct was coming? And then Nate told us what day it was going to be announced lol...

Grubb sounded so certain about Metroid Prime 1. There was no hesitation in his voice when he said it was coming out this year. I hope he ultimately proves to be correct.

In all seriousness I'm glad Grubb is the kind of guy to take the L in stride. There's plenty of people who will make specific claims and then wheedle and evade when they don't happen with vagaries and "plans changed" that we don't listen to. Grubb's willingness to be humbled by his flubb is a good lesson for all of us in the limitations of leakers, and his candor is appreciated

Unfortunate when typically pretty good leakers get things incorrect. Not even for the cool thing failing to transpire, but the blowback makes them likelier to clam up going forward, and I like hearing tidbits (that weren't just fabricated for clout), because I can take internet claims not panning out in stride.

I don't care that Jeff was wrong about WW/TP. It makes for a fun conversation. It wasn't announced, so what. I just went on with my day. There's more to life than video games.

I really liked the direct while i was watching it... but the more i thought about it, the more i realized how empty it was.

The best thing for me was Fire Emblem, i really like the way it looks (i know a lot of people disagree and that's ok), it gives me FE Awakening vibes and i'm all for it. It had a substantial gameplay demonstration and plot exposition. But other than that, we didn't get much, did we? Another 1:30 Zelda trailer (with title and release date, but as bare as the other trailers in terms of content... and "Tears of the Kingdom" was the mysterious spoilery title that couldn't have been revealed before? Really?), a Pikmin 4 announcement that blew my mind, but in the end it was just a logo, a Kirby remaster... some nice third-party announcements like Tales of Symphonia, Sifu, but that was it.

And we were speculating that this Direct could have a lot of old games, GameBoy games, GameCube and MPHD, even F-Zero... but this Direct was lacking even in the "old stuff" department lmao. At least we finally got Goldeneye

This is absolutely the right attitude to have about hobbies in general, but also important not to dismiss others' disappointment on a gaming enthusiast forum.

Yeah only the people who are actually disappointed though. Not the weirdos on forums who get so mad and overreact.

I fully agree with you but unfortunately you just made me realize that he should have instead changed his name to…

Jeff Flubb

Zelda launching in May is a deal-sealer, I think. There is a new Switch coming.

On topic: Direct was good. I didn't get wowed per se, but not everything has to blow me away. Some good looking stuff coming up.

I'm sure they exist, or at least planned, but I think people should stop guessing that they are coming anytime soon. There was no way they were going to release in the vicinity of BotW2. We'll see them popup eventually in 2024 and beyond.

Not to mention, like, the exact timing of the Direct. And the only thing Grubb said he was sure was going to be there was It Takes Two, and that was there.

But we can’t let facts get in the way of ragebait videos

As the insiders have been abundantly clear all along, though, knowing that a project exists and is in development ≠ knowing that it will be shown at a specific Direct. Even if they know it’s intended for a specific release window, that doesn’t mean they know exactly how Nintendo will announce it, which is why they’ve generally been overwhelmingly clear when what they know is based on a specific source confirming it will be in a Direct and what they think will be in a Direct is based on conjecture.

The problem is that the people who freak out about the insiders all being wrong don’t actually pay that much attention to what they’re actually saying.
