News Nintendo Direct announced for September 13th (7 AM PT, 10 AM ET, 3 PM BST, 4 PM CEST)

Just looked on Switch eShop on the coming soon bit

. Tunic
. Neir Automata
. No Man's Sky
. Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope
. New Tales from the Borderlands
. Bayonetta 3 at long long last
. Harvestella
. It Takes Two
. Sonic Frontiers
. Sifu
. Pokemon Scarlet & Violet
. Fire Emblem Engage
. Theatrhythm Final Bar Line
. Kirby's Return to Dreamland Deluxe

All those games there to pre-order right now if you want, all within the next half a year, and that list is not extensive of all the games you can actually see there nor does it have games we know are going to release in that same period but just aren't available to preorder for whatever reason (Persona 5 Royal and Octopath Traveller 2 for example). And once that 6 months is done Tears of the Kingdom will be right around the corner and there will maybe have been a Direct to show us even more.

Switch is still seeing plenty of support, can't really understand the disappointment. And Splatoon 3 just came out like 4 days ago to boot.
Neir Automata, No Man's Sky, Return to Dreamland are all old games. Tunic is newer but still old news at this stage and was 'free' on game pass too. Now I accept that not everyone has other consoles, but a lot of people do... and for those people - It Takes Two looks terrible compared to the other versions. It's cool that you can play wirelessly and with some kind of friend pass, but again - it's free on other platforms and looks better. Sonic Frontiers for the switch looks terrible compared to the other versions. Granted that's just the reality of the system having an affect but still...

The rest I'll grant you is new and / or good. Its just a shame that in 40 minutes there wasn't anything truly exciting. For me personally anyway.

I'd really hate to bug you about this but do you think mainline pokemon (specifically gen 1 and 2) coming to NSO and getting connectivity with Stadium 1 and 2 is still a possibility? I was so excited when both Stadium games were shown but was immediately deflated upon seeing the no transferring disclaimer. Kinda dampened my day a bit tbh so I'm curious on your thoughts
Personally I think it's just to indicate you can't transfer Pokemon from Sword/Shield/Arceus/BD/SP/LG!PE into the Stadium games, just because there is so much extra nonsense data the games don't know what to do with. When the Gameboy emulators come out and Pokemon Home is updated with connectivity to RBYGSC, then it'll be less of a barrier.

Regarding, rumours and insiders; I'm mostly fed up with people whining about it. As far as I'm concerned, rumours are fun to read. If these have substantial pieces of proof pre-announcement, cool! If not, it's all good. People should treat it the same way as I do. Why some people post-Direct flock to messageboards and start these witchhunts, do something more productive with your life, yikes. Still I can't deny that I'm somewhat disappointed that Metroid Prime Remastered still has not materialized. That's the one hope I have, but hey, you can't win 'em all right?

As for games post Tears of the Kingdom (still need to get used to it) I really hope the new hardware peeps aren't clinging to much those ideas. I mean there will always be new hardware, but I wonder if 2023 will be the year of new hardware. I can easily see 2024 being the year for either a refresh or a new system entirely. It is pretty interesting that currently the are only two games known with no definitive release date; Pikmin 4 (2023 vaguely) and Metroid Prime 4 (TBA).

Other main Nintendo teams (outside of the Zelda team) are pretty quiet.

If Sega had the same pace of remastering stuff as Square and Namco, I'd be a very VERY happy person. Damn they have too many good stuff getting dusty in their attic.

I think that the most disappointing thing about the lack of GB/GBC/GBA on NSO is that I was hoping it would be something for me to play like...now - or at least soon-ish. I don't really have anything that is a "must play" for me until Pokemon. Mario + Rabbids looks great but it makes sense to wait for that to go on sale with how steeply Ubisoft discounts their games. With two little kids right now it's hard for me to enjoy a lot of Nintendo's 2022 catalogue - a game like XB3 is just too massive (it would take me all year) and online multiplayer for things like Splatoon don't really work when you might have a crying baby at any moment.

I guess I'll get Tunic if it performs decently.

I have an explanation for the lack of WW/TP:

Showing it AND Zelda: TotK would have been contraproductivw for them.

I think it will launch via Twitter as will Metroid Prime.

I mean yeah, people complaining about 'old' games releasing on Switch will never not be a thing it seems but that's to be expected if you own any other platform, and is true in reverse if the rumours about Octopath Travller being announced for PS4 4 years late are true or if you're excited for No More Heroes 3 releasing soon.

The last Wii U port to release on the Switch for example was 3D World (with substantial new content) after years of complaining about those, and since then we've had new Metroid, Splatoon, Xenoblade, Pokemon, Kirby, Pokemon Snap, Mario Strikers, Monster Hunter with expansion among others. Switch gets plenty of new games all the time.

Sorry you didn't like the Direct though.

Another nitpick I had

Why was a trailer for Fall Guys Season 2 included?

Yet another example of odd pacing / inclusions that made these feel more like ad reels (which yes ofc they ultimately are) and less like celebrations for fans
These aren't celebrations for fans, they're ads. 3rd parties pay to have their games show up in directs so Nintendo is contractually obligated

Just me or is the "anime rpg aesthetic" so overdone by now its not even appealing anymore? I guess I can't blame designers as all of the most popular rpgs these days use the style (Persona/Xenoblade/FireEmblem), but man do they lack identity and look so generic. The new Fire Emblem conceptually just looks like more of the same, it's all so tired. Maybe I'm just burned out on RPGs but none of the ones shown looked like must-play experiences.

None of those games look the same at all aesthetically. It feel really disingenuous to say that, much like that twitter meme of "all western cartoons look the same" that had a whole bunch of characters off model to try and make a point. This is specially true in a direct that had both Octopath Traveler 2, Tales of Symphonia Remastered, and Atelier Ryza 3 which are all drastically different. The only two games from the direct I'd even remotely give a pass to that comment is Fire Emblem Engage and Atelier Ryza 3, since both of those are made by Gust. That said if you tried to place one of the FE cast into Ryza 3 or vice versa they would stick out like a sore thumb not matching the aesthetic of the rest of the characters in their world.

I mean, EPD 4 and 5 have released games this year and are providing ongoing content; Next Level, Monolith Soft, HAL, Game Freak (2!) have also all released games this year. We know from LinkedIn that Retro Studios finished something (presumably Prime HD) last year too and are still working on Prime 4. So far, EPD 3, Intelligent Systems and HAL/Vanpool are releasing games in the first half of 2023.

The 'missing' teams are also sort of accounted for: EPD 8 are on 3D Mario and seemingly a 2D game; EPD 10 are on 2D Mario and presumably Pikmin 4. Independent contractors like Grezzo and Good-Feel might have unannounced games. EPD 9 is the biggest mystery, other than Tour and Kart content. But there's more than enough going on for Nintendo to have new hardware out with games in 2023, not least because the odds of cross-generation support are very, very high.

It can happen that GB/C gets announced at a potential february or march direct with pokémon red/green/blue day one and in the same month they release pokémon stadium 1 featuring GB connectivity.

Pilotwings 64, Goldeneye and MP1/2 are september-december titles. I guess MP1/2 are going to be november-december. Then dropped MP3 at january 2023. Release 1080 Snowboard at february and then dropped Stadium 1/2 at march/april with gen 1/2 titles.

On the bright side, people here have been mostly rational and intelligent about everything.

Most people read this post and nodded in agreement.
If this is something you don't want to answer I completely understand, I'm just curious. Do you believe that we will see WWHD/TPHD on Switch at some point? Them not being in the Direct today makes it seem like if they do come, it will have to be after Tears of the Kingdom, which makes it feel like they are a long way off.

I don't understand the GoldenEye moaning, can someone that's unhappy about it actually explain?

Why I'm confused...

This is a game that historically had next to 0% chance of being released. We're not talking FF7 Remake / Halflife 3 levels of awesomeness here, buitI tell you what, looking at the rights issue down the years, it's really not far off.

It's a Nintendo game. Say what you want about Bond, Microsoft, Rare... it is a Nintendo game. It requires all parties to play ball, but Nintendo hold all those aces.

Original GoldenEye. On Switch. With the original controller. With online multiplayer.

The 4K remake being available on Xbox to experience the single player in a new way is a BONUS.

I respect people's opinions and do understand the sense of disappointment to an extent, but I don't believe anyone with a genuine love of GoldenEye from the late 90s would have anything but a huge grin on their face right now.

Game Boy for NSO can honestly be announced at any Direct. I know people will point out how they always do the NSO updates in the September Directs but it's not a hard and fast rule that Nintendo must follow. People will also say that September is when most people will be resubbing but given that a lot of people probably started their subs in December (Smash release date) or March (Animal Crossing), the distribution of resub times is probably all over the place. I can see Game Boy being announced early next year as the next big thing for NSO.

That's the best way of looking at it I guess. The negativity can get pretty tiresome, even for those who who enjoy the shared info, and know the solid track record of people like yourself. Doesn't seem to dawn on people that Nintendo is totally unpredictable at times, things move around behind the scenes. Not to mention that they can sit on a game for a long time.

Not all cubist paintings look the same aesthetically either, and yet you can categorize all of them as cubist. Of course none of those games were identical to each other, but they all very much follow current anime trends. That's neither a good nor a bad thing; some people will like it and some people will not, but there's no point in denying that they share very similar aesthetic sensibilities.

I think people were expecting the Xbox 360 Remake of Goldeneye on both systems or at the very least on Xbox. The Xbox version isn't a remake. It's just upressed to 4K with some control improvements and not online play. The Switch version is the N64 version with online play.

My sources aren't aware WWHD or TPHD yet. Now to be clear, that doesn't mean they don't exist. But I can't talk about games until my information is more iron-clad.

The rumors for Wind Waker and Twilight Princess are mostly coming from other outlets: Eurogamer, VGC and VentureBeat (Jeff Grubb). In their defense, it would be bizarre if all three websites are wrong! Unless all three sites have the same sources.

I'm only able to confirm Metroid Prime HD with confidence. When I say confidence, I mean 100% confidence. My sources on this are just way too good and they haven't led me astray yet.
Do you still believe that Metroid Prime HD will release this year or do you think that may have changed since your last information?

Engage should be out before the first 2023 direct. Wonder if FE will take a break before the Jugdral remake.

It’s opened two directs in a row!

I think the fun of directs versus other presentations is that you never know what to expect and nintendo is super vague outside of a timeframe.

I enjoyed it a lot, I do not get the FE, lets use the word discussion, maybe the leaks soured people on the project, maybe the art style was not to their takes (artist of Hakos from Hololive, she is great.). All of those are understandable but I feel there is more animosity towards this game, maybe its me.

It's really weird how this Direct ended. Normally it's "the next game will be our last announcement" then trailer plays and after that Takaahashi/Koizumi will say "what you just saw was blablabla, we hope you look forward to it" thank you for watching. But today, they did fakeout - that's all for today, Koizumi bows and then he says this will be last announcement lol

People are upset that neither version is the remake. There is an existing remake out there that we aren't able to purchase or play on either Switch or Xbox.

You know, I thought the animosity of Three Houses pre-release was just due to how much Fates had soured people on the franchise, but maybe the FE fanbase is just like this?

I mean, for as much as people rag on the Pokemon discourse, it took like, one game for people to suddenly become a lot more positive, and Arceus wasn't even received quite as well as Three Houses

The Fire Emblem fanbase is just like this, and they have been at the very least since it was first localized.

We just used to be a lot smaller so people could ignore it.

Yes I literally said that in the parenthesis in my post lol

I’m talking about perception. Nintendo chooses to sign those contracts with third parties, they ultimately decide what goes into these and how they are structured.

Capcom dropping cloud versions of the 3 Resi games this late seems a really weird move, do we have any data on how well cloud games sell on Switch?

Wonder why they never waited to release native ports on the next console

Does it even make sense to call leakers leakers if they arent the ones literally leaking those games? If someone doesnt knows about those leaks, and i told them, wouldn't i technically be a leaker too?

This is true. Guess I haven’t given much thought about it.

Thanks for this! At this point in time I just want to see it in action. Somewhere, a very irrational thought, Nintendo is just jerking us around by not showing us anything.

I really like Fire Emblem but take no part in the discourse precisely because Three Houses' build-up was so negative and it feels like the same thing is happening again. Personally I'm glad the series continues to take risks and swings from one game to the next.

Jeff did say 100% It Takes Two would be there
Yes and he was correct to bank on Zelda getting the title reveal, so he's cleary got sources who were on the ball. The Zelda ports stuff is weird; personally I do suspect they're done and sat around but that Nintendo aren't yet ready to use them.

man I'm gonna have no games this fall

splatoon will have to do
See, my take on this is that there's no good games with the audacity to take away from my Splatoon time, so it's all good.

As much as I wanted more new stuff, if I'm being honest with myself none of it would've been more exciting to me than Mario Party 1/2/3 on NSO lol. But please, next year, new stuff. Fire Emblem is unfortunately a game that I like on paper but always end up bouncing off of, but if there's one more big game in addition to Zelda and Pikmin I'll probably be pretty content.

It could be that. Since the a lot of people started with awakening maybe they hold that game to a certain standard. I know 3H also got some hate at the beginning. I think that's why I dont engage with fanbases in general cause in some cases (not all) they drain your possible excitement for a project.

I'd like to see a Capcom Horror Collection one day, with the original entries of the first three Resident Evil titles, and the two Dino Crisis titles. And as an unlockable bonus, the game that started it all; Sweet Home.

Might be reading too much into it, but is it possible Nintendo is sitting on Prime Remaster because 4 is having development issues and might take more than expected?

I'm only able to confirm Metroid Prime HD with complete confidence. When I say confidence, I mean 100% confidence. My sources on this are just way too good and they haven't lead me astray yet.
What about it being a holiday title this year? Was that just Grubb or did you also hear that?

"I'm really tried of Nintendo games, Pikmin 4 has the same "Nintendo" aesthetic as Zelda Tears of the Kingdom and Fire Emblem Engage" would be an absolutely absurd comment, but for some reason that comment is allowed to fly if it's from Japanese artist/"anime". I dunno how you can in good faith look at a game like Octopath Traveler 2, Fire Emblem Engage, and Story of Seasons A Wonderful Life sand say "these 3 games have a similar 'anime' aesthetic'".

I'm not disappointed in regards to the Switch version considering I've been expecting it to just be the original N64 ROM on NSO for awhile now, but it's bit of a shame we're not getting that fancy HD remakester with online play on Xbox.

It still is great to see GE come back officially after all these years, but yeah...
