i feel like this has gotta be placeholder for the time being, it has the same vibe as the original botw artwork of link climbing up that cliff face

not to say the artwork isn't absolutely beautiful but the composition feels off imo

bet you anything it’s wordplay
Yeah, I think it's a deliberate pun.
Didn't you basically just describe what the word spoilers means? Anyway, that's basically what I meant, I don't see how the title gives away anything about the story without context.
No, I'm saying that I don't think they care about story spoilers and that this title more likely refers to a general game mechanic or theme. It was withheld for marketing reasons, not to avoid spoilers, and I don't think whatever is the basic premise of the game can constitute a spoiler. This is the IGN article and quote in question:
“As for why we’re holding back on the name, you’ll just have to stay tuned because, obviously, Zelda names are kind of important,” Trinen says during our interview. “Those subtitles… they start to give little bits of hints about maybe what’s going to happen.”

Past Zelda games have had important subtitles that refer either to important items (Windwaker, Ocarina of Time) or in the case of Breath of the Wild, important themes and concepts. It seems whatever the Breath of the Wild sequel’s official name is, it does have some hint about the rest of the game.
There was also a second part to this interview that IGN spun into a separate article. In it, Trinen just said that they haven't actually shown what makes the game unique yet.

I wonder if Europe will get a different box art again.

I like this one way more than the BotW one so I hope that isn't the case this time around.

We're still saying the exact same thing. I didn't say anything about story spoilers. The point still stands that the title seemingly gives away nothing about the game

I... don't really like that title.

Breath of the Wild > freedom and exploration
Tears of the Kingdom > sadness and emotion
I didn’t like it at first, but now I’m like

hold up

tears of the kingdom: but which kingdom?

we see seven tear-shaped things. seals? etc?

the ground gets torn up — some of the sky was already there, but some of it appears to be chunks thrown up from tears in the ground

and what if there are like… dimensional tears? or time tears? or some weirdness like that

is there another sheikah connection, too? the tear motif is like their thing

there’s also the droplet travel system we saw (I’m gonna guess tear-related again)

I have a feeling it’s gonna be one that sounds kinda dumb at first and then ends up being particularly relevant

pull a twilight princess and all

I would’ve loved a TOTK blowout, but I’m absolutely not worried about the lack of one

This game will dominate Nintendo’s marketing for months early next year. To the point where we’ll almost be sick of it lol

What are the chances this gets delayed again

Unless something really bad happens (talking like key personal getting seriously ill/injured stuff), zero.

They (imo) went out of their way to announce the actual date more than 7 months away, they're absolutely certain to hit it.

What's the direct translation of the Japanese title? Are they using tears (as in a drop from the eye) or tears (something that is torn apart)?

I think I've heard this after every subtitle reveal that I've been alive for, lol
That's nice I guess, but it's the first time I've felt that way. I actually like how very specific Zelda subtitles tend to be to that game's mechanics or some type of element from the game. We'll see if Tears of the Kingdom ends up feeling the same with this game after it's all said and done, but right now I feel like you could copy/paste this subtitle to basically any piece of fiction involving a kingdom and it works. It lacks that odd sense of uniqueness that Zelda titles have mostly had for the past 25 years.

But at the end of the day it's a subtitle to a game and it doesn't matter much to me. If the game's good nobody will care.

That speculation about 7 dungeons has me giddy. BotW gameplay, now with more traditional Zelda dungeons? Why yes, thank you.

I wouldn’t hedge bets on them being “traditional”

Big dungeons could be in, but in a BotW setting they’ll still probably work very differently

I think it could mean both. The kingdom is definitely torn apart as we can see, but something to do with actual tears as well. Maybe we’re collecting tears to piece the Kingdom back together again?

SO HAPPY that SOMETHING was there! Thoughts:
  • Nailed down release date in the new fiscal year. So no ~2022 Zelda. There seems to be lots going on at Nintendo right now for some reason (cough DRAKE cough), and we even got an official delay announcement for Golf. Such a specific release date gives hope that the game is progressing well and actually releasing then though. It's later in Spring than I hoped for...
  • It was another teaser, which is meh, but it looked much more confident. They're obviously saving the blowout for early next year, coinciding with Drake.
  • Technically I can definitely see why they're saving it for Drake: lower texture resolutions than BotW, more pop-in. Improved ambient occlusion though.
  • TotK isn't a great name. It sounds like a fan made it up, but we'll get used to it as always.
  • TotK looks more vibrant and bold compared to BotW. I think it'll be more energetic as a game, which makes sense after the solemn BotW.
  • PLEASE have extensive new land masses that aren't Hyrule again...

To be fair, i said "more traditional" dungeons. I don't expect 1:1 dungeons like they were in TP/SS and so on.

But i expect them to be themed, and to be more different to each other unlike the 4 titans.

I think this is about that "Kingdom in the Sky" that the Stables kid in BotW alluded to.

yeah we saw the rewinded teardrop, it definetly has significance. Also the 7 seals are probably dungeons :)

Eh. I don't think there is anything 'unique' about Twilight Princess, Wind Waker, Skyward Sword, Phantom Hourglass, (and a couple few) outside of the Zelda context (excluding Ocarina, Majora). We've been seeing these titles for the last 20 years, so we're used to them, but they could also be stuck to any other fantasy novel or video game. Most of these are 'unique characteristic' + 'fantasy object or person'.

That's not a criticism of these titles, they're all fine to me, but I'm failing to draw some meaningful distinction between these and Tears of the Kingdom. I'm pretty sure Tears is referring to whatever teardrops are shown in the mural at the beginning of the trailer. And the game's story probably revolves around the ancient kingdom that sealed Ganondorf, which seems to colliding with Hyrule. So there's still elements of the game being hinted at by the title.

Maybe I am a total loser but in general I don't see how the name sounds dumb. Works as a contrast and evokes some kind of large world... I like it. Yes, it can be also stuck to any fantasy novel but if it were, I'd be likely to read that novel, and it still works in the Zelda context. This is probably the first title I like right off the bat, better than Breath of the Wild and Skyward Sword.

(If one doesn't like it I don't really have much to say, I don't like the name "Link to the Past" and prefer "Triforce of the Gods" so one might consider me to have bad taste.)

Also for real ... i think you can go seamless from the land to the skies.

What fucking magic does Nintendo use to make the loading for this so smooth that it doesn't interrupt the gameplay?

This game is probably going to be awesome, but Idk, I still don't really like the direction they're going with it (didn't want the same hyrule) and just getting teasers and nothing else for years now is frustrating.

definitely part of it! that’s what I’m saying

I think it’s another dual-meaning bit

the title will apply both to the expected (“kingdom of hyrule”) and at least one other thing (likely the “kingdom in the sky”)

just like how the titular “twilight princess” is not Zelda, but before the game released it was easy to be like “bruh what a dumb name it’s the princess but at twilight”

I see some similarities between this figure from the trailer and the Faron light spirit from Twilight Princess. I suppose it is no surprise given the swirly motif associated with green/Zonai, but it is interesting to see some more connections to the old pantheon of Hyrule.

Imagine we would have only gotten these two pictures without any gameplay 😬

So i’m glad we got atleast some seconds of gameplay and also the title

Didn't they say the game would be darker then Majora's Mask? Seems fitting
a common misinterpration of Aonumas quote:

"The new Breath of the Wild or the sequel to it, it’s not necessarily going to be related to Majora’s mask or inspired by it... What we showed you currently is a little darker," Aonuma said.

All he said was that the first teaster looked a little bit darker compared to Breath of the Wild.

Oh I just noticed that in that key art, Link's right sleeve is all the way up showing his magic gauntlet. In the gameplay it's covered by his tunic.

Coolio

16 gigs of RAM babeh!

Kidding ofcourse

Look at the thing on his waist where the Sheikah slate used to be.

Looks like the Tear Pouch thing from Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess.

EDIT: whoops this was already pointed out, carry on!

wow I don't usually feel this out of the loop but I swear I've never seen the word "Zonai" before today lmao
should I know what that is? I have played most of the zelda games lol

Even on the original Wii U based game, there's almost no loading with the flying machine exploit taking Link up super high.

I fully believe that on a game exclusive to a machine with 3x the RAM and Nintendo wizardry, that they achieved a kind of seamless loading between the surface and sky. I think it's necessary for those time reversal puzzles as seen in the trailer.

I’m losing hope for playable Zelda each day.

She’s gonna be just as useless as the other games again.

Pessimism rising 😞
I will come off as an asshat but personally speaking I hope she is not playable if it means that:

1.) you will have to constantly swap characters

2.) it will lead to completely different gameplay styles between different characters. Like Link = combat, Zelda = puzzle solving

If they really wanna give us playable Zelda you should either be able to choose your character at the start of the game
or they should just make a solo game for her. I didn't like GTA 5s swapping mechanic at all. Its immersion breaking as hell.

I also disliked Gooigi in Luigis Mansion 3.

There are many locations in BotW labelled as Zonai, such as the "Zonai Ruins". Their architecture is found all throughout the world in Breath of the Wild, but it isn't mentioned. You know those dragon statues and stuff you find in Faron? That's them.

They were a long passed civilization from long ago, and not much is known about them as of right now. However, their architecture and style is found within all 3 of the TotK trailers so far, leading everyone to believe that they will be the central fantastical race that will help you this time(instead of the Sheikah).

Holy shit, I just realized Tears of the Kingdom comes out during the 2-week span that I usually have my summer vacation!!
