Honestly not the best paced direct, last few annoucements saved it. Spent wayyyy too much time on DLC and farming games

Having a name and date for Zelda is welcome

Tales of Symphonia is my favorite RPG, I noticed some stuff not in the Gamecube version but not sure if that’s enough to day 1 buy it. It doesn’t include the sequel so I hope it’s different from the PS3 version but apparently some think it’s not and it’s 30 FPS (didn’t play that version). Still cool that my favorite RPG is on Switch

Other than that Radiant Silvergun shadowdrop is cool, some welcome indie late ports, overall good enough for me

At this point I know what people with connections to listen to thanks to their participation in the community and I am glad I am also part of this community as a member, the fact that they were wrong on several things seem to indicate that plans changed par the course lately.

Part because of Covid (as the direct said at the start) but part feels like they are spreading smaller stuff out for the time being. I say Drake.

What is confusing to me at this point is that I don't see the difference anymore between the subtitles of directs. What is the difference between a mini, partner or full direct other than running time?

I'm not sure why we'd expect a new EPD title in Q1; that's only happened in 2017 and 2020 on Switch. Fire Emblem is there in January, Square Enix are providing an exclusive or two (is the new FF:Theatrhythm exclusive?) for February; it's odd that March is empty right now, though. I wonder if we'll get something for the 'expanded audience' dropped in that month to round out the fiscal year.
Rude of me to forget the Kirby remaster, especially because I predicted more Kirby.

what, I can't call people who said a video game would be announced whores? what is this site coming to smh

edit: this is a joke by the way

The lead-in to Pikmin 4 was bizarre; the mobile game didn't need such an explanation but I guess they want people to look it up and give Pikmin a shot before Pikmin 4 launches at some point in 2023. But I'm agreed that, editing wise and pacing wise, the show was a little all over the place.
Yeah, the Pikmin Bloom thing was a weird “well, Miyamoto is really proud of Pikmin and wants to talk about it, and who at Nintendo is going to tell him no” thing.

Do you know how many times I've thought that FOR SURE we'd we Metroid Prime HD in some way? Like all insiders hinting at it, all signs point to it being a no brainer?

So many times. Absolutely can't do that to myself ever again. I mean, it's the 20th Anniversary, why not capitalize on that? I legitimately don't know if I believe that it exists anymore.
At this point I'm just telling myself it doesn't. And while I'm at it, Prime 4 is in development hell with zero progress and Advance Wars was cancelled outright.

Trying to play all of these RPGs before Zelda comes out

I'm gonna give my thoughts then get the hell out of this thread for the day, because shit is going south fast.

5/10 Direct. Not the worst Direct (last years September Direct was worse IMO) but this one was weirdly paced, had too many similar games, and the first party announcements and trailers were downright bizarre outside of Fire Emblem. Another teaser for BOTW2? Releasing a full Bayo 3 trailer online instead of in the Direct? Pikmin 4 with no gameplay? A random Kirby remaster? Goldeneye is a port instead of a remaster? Wtf? And I really don't like the new narrator, they lack any sort of charm. Hopefully they're holding back stuff for a Pro or Switch 2 because if they aren't this Direct looks even worse.

Very good Nintendo Direct. Tons of good info, lots of good games to play in the coming months. Plus, who doesn't love Zelda? Very stoked we got a name AND date. GoldenEye alone is a pretty big deal.

Sure, I was a little sad my favorite series, Metroid, wasn't there, and in particular, my most anticipated rumored game, Metroid Prime Remastered. I must stress that I don't have any insider knowledge, but I very much think this game's announcement will be dropped on Twitter. I think a lot of us vastly overestimate how big Metroid as a series is. After all, Nintendo spent a ton on marketing Dread, and it barely sold 3 million copies. Makes no sense to center it when the audience for the Switch loves JRPGs and games of that ilk - they sell very well on the platform, and I think it makes total sense not to put a Western science fiction first person shooter in the middle or end of all of that.

Anyway, I am very happy with today's news and look forward to playing all of the great-looking games coming soon.

I actually like the occasional JRPG, and I’ve played the occasional farming sim.

That being said I don’t have the time nor the drive to play 20 games in the JRPG/Farm sim style. Hell during the direct I was like you’d need like a billion hours to actually play and complete all of this.

I also can’t help but think these games will all cannibalize each other in sales. How many people are realistically gonna buy all of those farming sim titles? I guess when your hardware sales are PS2 like you don’t need them too cause you have such a big player base it can spread out to a degree.

B-/C+ territory for me.

PS: I think the hate on insiders from some is too strong, and some take this shit too personal. At the same point in time you can only strike out on the Metroid or Zelda remakes so many times before even your supporters might start to doubt and wonder.

Solid Direct, but its interesting no Zelda WW/TP HD or Metroid announcement, also it's interesting Nintendo is porting Kirby Dream Land and not Kirby Epic Yarn that one of best Kirby games.

Also, Pikmin 4!!!

Generals are a bit longer, have maybe 1-2 bigger announcements at the beginning and the end and are streamed live. That‘s the only difference.

  • Not a huge amount else grabbed my attention. VERY RPG and farm sim heavy. Although that remake of the GameCube Harvest Moon (have they renamed the series?) was a nice surprise at least, I enjoyed that on.
Yes, after Marvelous and Natsume split up. Natsume got to keep the Harvest Moon name so Marvelous had to rename the series after the most recent title to come out after the split which was Story of Seasons. Natsume started making their own Harvest Moon games though so now there are two series: Harvest Moon from Natsume, and Story of Seasons from Marvelous which is the actual continuation of Harvest Moon.

This only affects the west. In Japan, the series has always been called Ranch Story.

Very poor editing and content choices compared to what Nintendo usually does in Directs. I will buy quite a few of these games and some are among favourite series... but still not feeling any excitement. Pikmin section and the closer with that Zelda tease were particularly bad choices.

Neither Theatrhythm or Octopath II are exclusive.

I am extremely hyped for several of the games shown but it's funny as hell that one of the most exciting announcements to come out of this is for an XBOX game.

I'd say a lot of the content in the direct wasn't exactly for me but the big hitters really hit for me. Love a new fire emblem coming some soon. Love that we finally have a name and date for Zelda. And I am beyond words that we have real images of a new pikmin game.

Surprised to see no mention of metroid or the zelda ports but those will come in time I'm sure.

I can tell that starting next month through next year is gonna be a busy gaming year for me on the switch lol.

So there's Bayonetta in October, Pokemon November...isn't that still a pretty light fall for them? Unless I'm missing something I think everything first-party this Direct was 2023.

Holding out hope for Metroid or Zelda remasters via Twitter? ehhh

This is just a good example as to why insiders shouldn't put their neck out unnecessarily. Imo Nate clearly has some legit info but stuff like announcement and release timings is unreliable so why even bother saying something like that when it can just be used against you when whatever it is doesn't show.
That being said I don't believe Metroid exists at this point and won't until we actually see it.
Dude, they’re making educated guesses and chasing the high of the one time they got something right. Not putting their neck out there.

Predicting a direct in September isn’t too hard considering there has consistently been a September direct and it’s right before TGS. Otherwise, ‘insiders’ are just hurting the reception of these announcements from hardcore fans since the set false expectations.

I've always been saying this. The worst part is that Xbox owners get to play with randoms online while NSO owners are stuck with playing with friends. Meh.
It doesn't look like the Xbox version has online play at all from the press release.

Also I feel like if this direct being basically a TGS/Japan focused direct wasn’t THE direct for the back half of the year for the whole world this wouldn’t be as big of an issue.

As it stands this appears to be the only major Nintendo direct post E3 for the whole rest of the year (not counting like a Poke direct or something focused). I think that makes this harder to swallow for some. I think if people knew they were getting a non TGS focused in say late Oct before the Holidays it might help shift opinions on this all.

Personally I really liked the following announcements:
  • Remake of Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life
  • Octopath Traveler II
  • N64 announcements (especially Pokemon Stadium 1 and 2), but honestly surprised by no Gameboy
  • Pikmin 4, although they took way too long to shill Pikmin Bloom
  • Zelda name and release date reveal
I think the Metroid Prime Remaster is obviously real but they'll likely sit on it like they did on the new FE game and release it when they want to. Less sure about the two Zelda HD ports. If they come at all, they'll probably be in 2024 or 2025.

Either way, those decrying the lack of a holiday game are obviously not realizing that Pokemon will be their holiday blockbuster like it was in 2019, and that's frankly all they need

My guess is the Metroid Prime remake was cancelled because it leaked which is a thing Nintendo actually does.
I don't think that's what happened. With the Netflix thing, Nintendo nulled their contract because their business partner breached their trust by deliberately leaking details, any sane business would cancel after that. If MP1 is real, I'd say what happened is that they want to release it during the beginning of MP4's marketing cycle but then MP4 went into development hell again, so they're sitting on their thumbs with it

I feel like Nintendo usually wants a game of their own next to Pokemon for November. it was Luigi's Mansion in 2019, Smash in 2018, Mario Odyssey in 2017. I'm surprised we didn't see anything from them for that time frame.

Yup this - it was a very oddly constructed presentation.

TBH the quality of the directs themselves (not content) has been on a downward trend. It's bothered me the way they inconsistently use headlines and such in the last few. I wonder if it has to do with the lay-offs on the NOA side for this latest one.

I see we’re continuing the tried and true tradition of denigrating insiders and the people who listen to them when they dare to have a miss despite their long records. Great, always love that part of the Direct cycle.

This is the most ‘Nintendo fanboy’ thing I think anyone can possibly say but that new announcer who was similar to but slightly off from the previous one had me in uncanny valley for the entire runtime. Weird.

Taking my Pikmin goggles off for a minute, it was a very oddly paced direct which I think is going to hurt it in public opinion but the content itself was pretty great. New Fire Emblem, Pikmin FUCKING FOUR, Kirby Remaster, Symphonia Remaster, Octopath 2, It Takes Two, Tears of the Kingdom tease. DLC for Splatoon, Mario Kart and Xenoblade. Very good continuing roadmap for Nintendo 64.

It’s just that it felt like we got a new farming simulator announced every 3 minutes, it was getting ludicrous.

Nintendo is keeping Tears of the Kingdom very very close to the chest. Still haven’t gotten a non-teaser. I expect we’ll finally get a blowout trailer in the inevitable February/March direct and that’ll be that.

No Game Boy NSO was genuinely shocking, and remakes/remasters of any Metroid Prime game is officially cursed territory.

2023 is off to a fantastic start though, we’ve already got Fire Emblem, Kirby, Octopath 2, Zelda: TotK, and Pikmin 4 lined up. I suspect FE Engage being in January leaves the door open for a possible Echoes: Genealogy of the Holy War in December. We’ll see.

GoldenEye!! Still no date... but surely imminent!!

Pikmin Bloom section was the worst thing I've watched on my phone in approx 7 and a half years.

I still believe Metroid Prime HD is coming but the fact it's not here yet speaks volumes as to the progress Retro Studios have made with MP4. Like we all suspected, how do Nintendo reveal MP without an update on MP4? Well I guess we got our answer... they simply don't show either. MP4 is still a way off - could be because of bad reasons, but equally could be because of Drake reasons. Who knows.

TP and WW not showing up is surprising, but again, now that we have a release date for BotW, I absolutely get why they don't want to release these now. May 2023 sees two things happen: 1. we get an amazing new Zelda experience 2. The clock resets on waiting for a new Zelda experience! WW and TP arriving in that potentially hideous void of time between 2023 and 20?? makes sense. Save them for when you need them.

No Mario.
No Donkey Kong.

Perhaps Drake is coming sooner than we thought?

Overall, this is a great Direct. It does leave a lot of questions though....

Oh, and the Zelda trailer was irritating... but also, I'm happy not being shown too much... but irritating because I want to see, but actually do I really? Argh.

Yeah this is what often hangs me up about the insider debacle. Not discounting the fact that they get lots of things right but they've completely changed how discourse works. To the point where like 5 things that have been heavily rumored keep not happening and they're shrugged off like "well not everything is going to happen all at once".

"The things we thought were happening not happening proves that the other thing (the Dane) we know is happening is gonna happen sooner."

In the end, everyone is responsible for managing their own expectations or indulging in the hype culture. Journalists get paid to report on rumours, news sites are incentivized to talk up speculation on can't-miss-events. The only one without a profit motive here who can make an untainted decision are video game fans themselves, and they can weigh individually whether they get more joy than disappointment out of this self-reinforcing cycle.

Yeah but see that's the problem. Dread, in an audience that very much loves jrpgs still managed to outsell or sell similarly the popular jrpgs of the system such as xenoblade and fire emblem. And lets be real, why wouldn't they end with metroid if they ended a direct with xenoblade lol.
