From this image, Harmony reminds me of Futaba from Persona 5.

uhh the clout and 10x, 100x, and 333x battles stuff is new right? interesting
No, it was added in the 4.0.0 update over a year after Splatoon 2's launch, along with the normal/pro modes as an overhaul to how Splatfests battles were scored. Seems that system has carried over, though the final score tally is different, and the system for determining 10x/100x battles is new (it was completely random before).

333x itself is new though.

Nintendo's best artists work on this game g'damn. It's so stylish, I just about melt looking at it all

I'm somewhat torn on this. Like, it looks too much like a Splatoon 2.5 imo... But, skippable intro, salmon run at any time, and better grouping up with friends means I will be buying this regardless haha. Seriously, that last thing in particular is great, my brother will actually play this with me now lol.

I know people are saying this game "just looks like Splatoon".

But I think it's way to easy to look especially at Splatoon 1 with rose tinted glasses.

In reality, Splatoon 3 blows away both games graphically. Just look at the change in animation quality, the hair movement, and everything like that.

Agreed. The Direct kind of felt like it was more for fans than newcomers, and the blog post did a better job at explaining everything.

100% this.

League was a little too stressful for my liking most of the time. My friend and I always wished we could team up in Turf War and Ranked for a bit less intense sessions. We ended up leaning on Salmon mode for that, but it's hardly the same.

Really the only things missing in this game for me are knowing I can switch my loadout/"Fit" between matches (has this been covered?), and a sane way to have voice chat and game audio at the same time. The latter is a lost cause
Yeah that’s one thing the blog and video don’t call out. I feel that’s the point of loadouts because you could change gear manually in between matches before queuing so I imagine it’s similar if not fully the way people want it considering you even have that test range now in between matches.

Did anyone here spot if you can change loadouts while queuing?

You don't really notice the graphical improvements from 1 to 2, but damn. The Wii U version looked rough.

I remember there was a Sheldon comparison between 1 and 2 going around back then, it really highlighted the massive jump in the character model's quality.

I watched the full Direct with my kids this morning. Oldest one super keen to get it. For me it's all about whether I would play the single player, because the turf wars etc. look very like the stuff I've recently played a lot of since getting Splatoon 2 in March.

One thing that is not clear to me: will it be possible to play with a friend of the same faction in the Splatfests? I wanna introduce a friend to Splatoon during the World Premiere.

It was possible in Splatoon 2's splatfest premiere, so I'm assuming it'll be possible here.

Honestly I kind of wonder if it's a manpower issue with EPD. They may simply just not have the staff. This is echoed in stuff like BOTW2's delays, the lack of an Odyssey sequel, the sparse content with Animal Crossing at launch. Sure, COVID and all that, but Nintendo is expanding EPD for a reason, and its' because they are struggling to put out in-house content at a steady clip, relying more and more on outsourcing to partners. Maybe after the expansion and hiring spree, they'll try to make a Splatoon 4 that really feels like a generational leap instead of an iterative sequel.

And yeah, missed potential seems to be an issue with Nintendo sometimes.
I may not be Nintendo's ideal audience - there's only very few games I can take seriously at all, most notably Zelda which is a rare combination of artistic value, gameplay finesse and supremely tasteful execution - so I skip quite a few releases, but looking at the post-2017 EPD output from that slight distance I can't help but agree. If it wasn't for porting over Wii U games... Their enormous expansion investment recently was a fantastic step in the right direction.
ding ding ding, we have a winner

I've been banging this drum for ages, and felt very vindicated when the EPD investment was announced
To be fair, this conversation is being held ever since N64's glacial release schedule. Nintendo's always had much more potential than they've been able to execute upon due to their relatively small development workforce. I never really got their "we don't want to expand because we want to preserve Nintendo dev culture" argument when it was obvious that not expanding wasn't working exactly optimally either. It smacks more of Yamauchi-era penny pinching to be honest. Glad that that's gone out of the window.

Also for some of y’all, you gotta stop putting down people who wanted more from single player. The three campaigns we’ve gotten in the series have all been fantastic and there’s especially a lot of love for the Octo Expansion, the biggest campaign yet that raised expectations for what is possible. They may be a drop in the bucket for some of you, but for others the single player is a huge part of the experience and some of the most valuable time they spend with the game. I also agree with Jersh earlier in the thread, the initial trailer for Splatoon 3 and the Rise of the Mamallians trailer each set up expectations that more attention was going to be given to single player this time so to see Nintendo turn around and just basically shrug over it in this Direct while also saying large scale DLC was incoming that single player fans have to now pin all their hopes and dreams on was very disappointing. Look there’s 12 million people who picked up Splatoon 2 alone and people are going to want and be excited about very different things from a series that does offer a lot of everything (single player, pvp, competitive pvp, co-op pve etc) even if one element will inevitably get the most love. Just because some people only put in 20 hours of Splatoon or whatever doesn’t make them lesser Splatoon fans than people all in on the multiplayer aiming for top ranks.
Seriously sometimes we need to stop confusing trolling with normal criticism. It‘s not like that others and me derailed an OT or bought a game despite it having a big disclaimer on the cover ‚THIS IS A MULTIPLAYER GAME WHERE YOU HAVE TO PUT IN AT LEAST 300 HOURS A YEAR‘. It was just a direct of a game in a super successful game series and some people expected different things out of it.
Glad to read this. Between the Nikkei "I Told You So"-fest (which was completely unwarranted for anyone who wasn't trying to score points) and yesterday's Splatoon Direct Meltdown I've lost a bit of Fami Optimism. This place might end up like most other forums after all.

I might have missed it, but I don't think I saw it here yet. The Japanese Splatoon website teased a Chainsaw Splatana which looks dope:

FZzlDmQXEAAPi-g
FZzc32IUYAok3DX

Also, there's 26 playable weapons during the world premiere splatfest

So here's the timeline I think we have up to release?

18th: splatfest premiere download (may get datamined?)
25th: splatfest premiere playable with tutorial and plaza for picking team
27th: splatfest premiere
5th: NA invitational
(week of) 7th(?): reviews
9th: release

This wasn't discussed in the Direct, but I'm sharing it bc it was one of the two items I hoped for:
Test range
The bulk of the building is reserved for the test range, where impassioned Inklings and Octolings can warm up while they wait. In addition to targets, a state-of-the-art copy machine serves as a practice dummy. This dummy is no dunce, however. It will retaliate with enemy ink so that you can practice defensive maneuvers.
I was hoping for more enhanced training options and so this is great.

My few cents coming from the presentation:
  • It is more Splatoon. Which is good but it feels more like something you could have done as part of ongoing content patches and/or DLC to pay for. Reminded me of that Overwatch 2 thing. But maybe they ran into a technical dead end and needed to make a new game with updated engine to implement stuff like three teams for Splatfest. I dunno. But it just shows that Nintendo either has some double standards or changed over the years, regarding publishing sequels that don't really add something new. Because then... where the hell is my new F-Zero with online?
  • They skipped a lot of (for me) crucial details about the modes and stuff like the Region you can choose in the settings. Really important stuff for someone who got burnt with Splatoon 2, while wasting time with that card game... just weird
  • I like how you can be on the training stage while waiting for a match. Less downtime. Good choice
  • I like how you can join and invite friends and seemingly FINALLY make premade teams in Turf War, something I always wanted since the first game
  • Maprotation is still bullshit tbh. Just give us mapvote. Strike the last 2 maps you played on in that lobby and you are good to go. We all have limited and it sucks if you have to deal with a map you don't like in your free time. But I like how you seemingly don't have to watch the "news" and just get a scrolling text with the new maps
  • Having replays like Demos is a great feature
  • But... I still need to know how the netcode is. If it still sucks ass like in 2, then sorry, I am out. I don't need superbullets, warping enemies, being killed out of the blue and shooting on enemies for 1 minute and nobody dies in every goddamn session.
Overall: I'll wait, play the Demo and watch out for the first 1-2 weeks on streams and reports.

There's no way people are unironically using "iterative sequel" and "splatoon 2.5" or whatever nearly 2k posts into this thread right? right?
My main question is how exactly would they change the game to avoid being an "iterative sequel." I've seen suggestions like changing the aesthetics, gameplay, or single player campaign but they never go into detail on how they would change these outside of making the single player more like the Octo Expansion.

Looks like a thin version of those identity protection stamps.

Just popping in to say I loved the direct! Game looks awesome, literally and figuratively. Splatoon doesn’t need a full rework, it’s awesome and still super unique.

Whenever Wahoo World is live in Anarchy I hope the stars align and Splatoon 2 has Reef / Pit in rotation, I mean that's one way to deal with undesired rotations lol

You don't really notice the graphical improvements from 1 to 2, but damn. The Wii U version looked rough.
Callie and Marie look like they were wrung through a ringer and they couldn't even move their limbs. Just. Yikes. They would look better as Zombies. I forget how kind of ugly Splatoon 1 is too.

Though I have to say, I prefer the ink in 1 vs. 2. The ink in 1 seems a lot thinner, and it has better colors for multiplayer. I guess the jury is out on 3 though.

I don't remember if I've expressed this here yet but

I AM SO EXCITEDDDD I WANT TO PLAY NOW I CANT WAIT UNTIL THE 27TH IT LOOKS SO GOOOOOOD 😭😭😭😭😭😭

Okay so there are several details about Anarchy & X Battle that I didn't fully understand and it's so much better than I realized (at 15m22s):

And like, if you have even just 1 friend available at a time, then you'll be able to choose if you want to play Clam Blitz, Rainmaker, Tower Control or Splat Zones (once League Battle and X Battle are added into the game). Even with no friend available, only one mode will be out of reach.

Wow, what an incredible Direct! Very, very happy about all the fantastic ideas and additions. Didn‘t expect that many great announcements. Hope X rank won‘t be added very late after release, though.

This game will very likely be a massive hit, and reading some impressions, it seems like Nintendo significantly surpassed most expectations of the IP fanbase.

Exciting!

Why did I never spot the wins-losses counter on the right when I wondered how Series works. My Splatoon tunnel vision now extends from Splatoon matches to Splatoon menus.

The video also helps explain something else I kept asking myself: Why keep S+ rank going all the way up to 50 when you switch over players into X as soon as S+0? Being able to opt for slightly less stressful but still competitive matches where at worst you'll risk a bit of buffer for the next season reset is pretty welcome.

Ngl, reading about anything related to X rank is like reading about new features in Ferraris. I put 265 hours into Splatoon 2 and X rank and I think I was closer to making the bench of a Premier League team than reaching X.

This is a completely random complaint, but I noticed something the other day. If you move left to right without shooting, the camera automatically repositions itself, which can mess with your aim. There is a mechanic implemented in the game to disable it, but it's not really useable. I want there to be a toggle for this in the control settings in Splatoon 3.

Watched the Direct on my lunch break. It's ridiculous how much of an upgrade this looks to be. Like, yea obviously it's more Splatoon, but it's pretty clear that they've been working on this for a while and without the pressure to have something ready close to launch they were able to go for the moon. That Direct absolutely clowned on the handwringing that was going on lately.

I've been out of the game for probably the last 3-4 years but this has me itching to dust off Splat 2.

Some thoughts:
  • Yup, that's a Splatoon game alright
  • Nintendo leaning hard into their Japanese-ness is always fun, and this is probably the new high water mark.
  • Splitting out weapons to their own currency makes so much as I hated the tension between buying gear vs. unlocking weapons. That's no longer a concern and there's so many things to spend currency on
  • Splatana concept is cool and having another melee option is nice to see
  • If there isn't a Splatfest vote relating to the three idol groups I'm going to be surprised I expect it'll be the final one
  • Splatfest having a 3-way Turf War gives me major nostalgia for 3-way Domination mode in Unreal Tournament '99
  • The Splatfest decor looks so good. I'm absolutely jealous of OLED owners, because that's going to "pop" hard.
  • THEY PUT A CCG IN SPLATOON 😍 RIP MY LIFE
  • Salmon Run looks like it's going to be the same sort of chaos that it always was with even more insanity with the superbosses, and it has its own Splatfest type thing!
  • We have loadouts that aren't tied to Amiibos! 🤩 (I forget if this was in Splat 2, but this was my #1 bugbear with the series)
  • Lobby improvements are great. Having a training room to play around with weapons is such an obvious QoL improvement I'm shocked it didn't happen in Splat 2. Being able to see what your friends are up to is a nice touch.
  • Locker system looks like a more deliberate version of the square showing the clothing people were last wearing.
  • I really want to know more about Murch's changes. If it's just swapping abilities around that's fine, but I really hope it's not locked behind a limited time currency again because as someone who didn't have a lot of time to play and missed plenty of Splatfests it really sucks to be denied mechanics because you missed an event and the FOMO that ensues.

I might have good news for you (I hope)

You're brilliant! I really hope they weren't just holding Y for better camera control here lol

Edit: I just noticed at 23:40, when they swim to the side holding the rainmaker, the camera doesn't seem to automatically move to the left either.

While we're in the Splatoon 3 mood I want to point your attention to this new SkullandCo gripcase, I stumbled upon it while looking for pre order bonuses and couldn't resist to get it myself for the new OLED Switch after previously having used a Satisfye case. I don't know of these things run out but if you like to style your Switch it seems cool.

By the way, @mazi

Since you created this thread, and you're a moderator, what was your idea for this thread when the Splatfest premiere comes? Will this remain the primary place for discussion of the demo until launch of the game?

I am so ridiculously excited for this game!

I am terrible at most multiplayer games, but I love how I can contribute in this just by doing some decorating. I love it’s look, it’s sounds, and how great it feels when you say “booyah” at the start of a match and people “booyah” back.

All I wanted was more Splatoon and to be able to skip the news, so yeah, I am hyped!

This reminds me, I absolutely adore how you can booyah and flop around with friends in the shooting range before a match starts!

no i def think it would be best if someone makes a thread for the demo.

That's why it's "X Battle" in its own mode rather than just X Rank.

I'm curious what they're going to do with League Battle. In Splatoon 2, the league points and rankings and all that stuff was pretty incidental; it was really just the mode to use if you wanted to play ranked modes with friends, since Ranked Battle didn't allow it. Now Anarchy Open pretty much fulfills that. All they said about the new League mode is that "sometimes the residents of Splatsville go a little rogue and throw some special modes into League Battles." No idea what that means, but I have to assume it will be a pretty significant gimmick, since otherwise the mode will be even deader than it was in Splatoon 2, and an odd choice to hold for a post-launch update.

The contributions without "killing" people is what drew me into Splatoon in the first place. When I'd play other multiplayer shooters, I just felt useless for so long. Most the first month I played Splatoon 2 I was learning the controls while inking the ground, and I was still part of the victories.

So will the two anarchy modes always have a different map/mode going on at the same time? So like if I don't want to be forced to play clam blitz I can just play the other anarchy mode and it will be guaranteed that It will be on a mode that isn't clam blitz?

I don't think that's confirmed or disconfirmed, but it's what many pro players and content creators have assumed

I think/hope many people will be surprised by the specials. Solo focussed powerful specials are such a game changer. Only one that seems a bit boring still to me is the rain cloud, they should've added some thunder to that

Now that you mention the specials, some of the choices for returning ones are a little... odd to me. Idk if it's just me, but it feels like Triple Inkstrike already fulfils the role that Booyah Bomb plays. Tenta Missiles were very much disliked by many people towards the latter half of Splatoon 2 (and personally I think they're not well designed at all), and like you said, the Ink Storm feels very lackluster.

Why was it disliked?
Very spammable, very quick to use, very safe to use, forces everyone to scramble, locates everyone everywhere on the map, hard counters slower attacking weapons or weapons that are less mobile forcing the game into a shooter meta, I could go on and on and on about why missiles are disliked

Basically one person using tenta missiles can stop an entire team from pushing in, because you completely disrupt their positioning, you know where everyone is coming from and it forces them to move predictably, so most people would rather stay safe when pushing objective rather than trying to make plays.
