Pre-Release Splatoon 3 — Pre-release Discussion Thread

Why do we have to suffer for 30 more days (29 excluding the World Premiere oasis)? I've never been so hyped for a new game give it to me now

These comparisons to other games on both sides of the discussion (Pokemon, Botw2) seem extremely pointless and unfounded.

I expected 1 or 2 new modes but still solid presentation for me. Amnjust not fan of the idols. But I don't know what some of you expected, it's Splatoon. I don't know how you want the game to look.
But 1 or 2 new modes will make a huge difference. That’s what I expected. Not even a new ranked mode is just lame

Splatoon 2 was a launch window game and was also a sequel of a game that released on a dying console. People were mostly expecting just a way to play Splatoon on Switch and that's what they got.

Splatoon 3 doesn't have that benefit.

Agreed. Very interested to see how S3 performs, I imagine it may struggle compared with 2.

What exactly were the general expectations then? I see a new story campaign, maps, modes, customization and weapons. A lack of beefy single-player content doesn't somehow negate this.

Takeaway 1: kinda crazy how completely-formed Splatoon 1 was. They have had chances to change it up but apparently don't think it's needed. I respect that.

Takeaway 2: single-player is announced with big words, but without much details. There were some nice-looking cinematic snippets in here so I'm still hopeful for something more meaty than 2.

Waiting for impressions and reviews on this one. Will bite if the single-player is a step up from 2 and if game feel has improved (Splatoon 2's shooting was so floaty).

I imagine it wont sell as well as 2. Yeah yeah japan will push it, but overall it wont sell as much.

Buuut perhaps if the dlc and updates are really cool they could give a lot of extra sales.

It actually does because people were expecting something actually new to jump in.

Is even worse that they're locking that behind DLC (Apparently too because we still don't know if they will deliver on that front).

if you say SOMETHING new. We got that. We have the Singleplayer Card game side mode, and the new ''time limited''(valid complain) 3 way turfwar, plus quite a few updates to Salmon Run + not forget a new story(now it could be so simple as Splatoon 2's, but the cutscenes they showed seem a bit meatier, dont think it will be tho)

We barely know what single player looks like or how meaty it is. They're not touching on it a bunch because single player has never been the main focus of Splatoon, nor should it ever be.

The Pokemon kind of "new".

Hot take incoming!!!

This game looks great! I'm super stoked. Salmon run looks all kinds of nutty and out of control!
And yes, I've played both games for over 100 hours each. And yes, I can spot the differences and improvements. And yes and yes, I can spot the similarities.

Didn't blow me away, but this was a solid presentation. I've said my piece about the slow marketing cycle up to this point, so I won't really get into that anymore and just focus on what we saw here.
  • New techs look nice. Climbing up walls was always a pain, so it's nice to see that process expedited.
  • Stage list is great. Really good returning picks from both Splatoon 1 and 2, although I think they leaned a bit too heavy into Splatoon 2 here. Only 5 new stages at launch after getting 6 in Splatoon 2 is a bit iffy, but getting 12 total certainly makes up for that. Flounder Heights seems to be the first update too, hell yeah.
  • Only two new weapons it seems, which is a bit disappointing. Both look pretty interesting though, and every other weapon returning is very nice.
  • Really dig how tactical some of the new specials are.
  • New currency for buying weapons could backfire, but on paper it looks to be an improvement.
  • Don't remember loadouts being in Splatoon 2, so getting those back here is nice.
  • Stage and mode rotations are back, yuck.
  • Lobby seems to be much better this time around, which is very nice. Easier to join friends, better practice arena, and recon mode is no longer limited to the current stage rotation.
  • Those emotes sure are something. Dabbing and the Macarena in a Nintendo game, what a world we live in.
  • Card game looks like a fun distraction. Doubt I'll put much time into it, but it's still a cool addition.
  • That Salmon Run music gave me a headache.
  • Story mode looks the same as always, which is definitely disappointing. There's so much potential here, but they just refuse to move on from the floating level format. Even Octo Expansion, which was a definite improvement, still wasn't what I was really hoping for, so I doubt the DLC does much different either.
  • Love the new Splatfests. Really seem to be leaning into Japanese festival style with the colors and music, which I am all for. Presentation wise, looks like a straight upgrade from the previous games.
  • 2v4v2 has a lot of interesting potential, but I am worried it could fall flat on it's face. Hope I'm wrong, because on paper it looks sick.
  • I will die for Big Man.
Overall, that was about everything I expected. Nothing here will likely convince you if Splatoon 2 already didn't, and this is clearly just an iterative sequel, but that's not the worst thing in the world. I dunno if I'll end up getting it at launch, but more Splatoon is ultimately more Splatoon, and I know I'll have a blast when I inevitably pick it up down the line.

I agree, I was just listing that a lack of perceived ample single-player content doesn't mean the game wasn't suddenly doing anything new.

Srry but a new card game spinoff with over 150 cards is a bunch more than ''Here a new crystal hat that changes your pokemon type''

But why compare, you said Something new and i gave you something
I'm sorry what lol

these comparisons between titles generally dumbfound me as I said at the top of the page

you can't discount Scarlet and Violet's massive step forward for the series going open world down to "hats"

nor is a side card mode significant new content in any way related to the core game mechanics

what is the purpose of this argument

Yeah, we have no idea if this is a big single player campaign or not. The stages looked cool in the Direct but they just didn't show much. I wouldn't be so quick to write it off as many here are doing.

The purpose of that argument was showing that the new things in the direct are more than 'the pokemon ''new'' (I took this comment not as a positive something) the one i was speaking to was refering to.

Scarlet and Violet surely shakes things up with the open world stuff, but that is real new stuff, not the ''New' stuff the one i was commenting to was referring to

Also, I have zero (0) interest in the card game because I hate card games like that (it's because I suck at them), but I NEED to get all the cards. They know how to get me.

Yeah, I understand the purpose of your reply but the larger argument/comparison is just pointless and bad faith

The worst thing about Splatoon 1.5 Part II isn't that it won't have new modes at launch, but that it won't have cut Clam Blitz from the game.
I really hate that Clam Blitz is being shoved down our throats. I hate the mode, especially with Randos.

At the very least it seems like you can play with friends without getting a high rank first.

I really hate that Clam Blitz is being shoved down our throats. I hate the mode, especially with Randos.

It means my goal of getting all X in a Splatoon game is once again out of reach. Splatoon 3 dropping Clam Blitz and me mainlining the three basic modes before a fourth can be released in an update down the road was my only hope.

Yearly COD games are just map packs.

FRESH, I just turned into a KID. anyone who badmouths this presentation will have to confront me. I'm 100% sold on the game for customization alone. The mood is so incredible for this game! I'm happy as can be with what I saw! I want to have all you Splatooners here on my friends list later.
Same!!! It'll be my first Splatoon game actually but I loved everything about it. Can't wait for the demo!!

They didn't say when/where to download the Splatoon 3 testfire splatfest app, did they?
You can already preorder it for free on the eShop and it'll download as soon as the data is up on August 18

or here

Welp, in the end, it's Midtoon 3 instead of Kinotoon 3.
Joke aside, looks neat, but think I'll pass. Hoped a bit more from the Single-Player mode ...
Has me worried it won’t be as robust and they are leaving the best ideas for the DLC again. I want a full on Mario galaxy meets Splatoon single player campaign. Like totally insane stuff. Boss battles need to be unique instead of essentially the same thing again.
