Reviews Metroid Dread | Review Thread

Wait Psychonauts 2 is at 91? I thought there were no new games released this year that had hit 90+ yet.
that's not the version with the most reviews. usually for multiplatform games people consider the score of the version with the most reviews to be the games metascore.

Ah that makes sense. Thanks.

Edge mag is going to be decider whether Dread is going for 90 or stay at 89.

Dread is currently at 549 best game off all times and needed only a couple of 90-10 to be place at 540 and above for 90 metascore position.

So 89 then

Incredible how thriller-y the monitoring of a metacritic score for a video game can get lol.

I've been lurking on this thread for the last couple of days the suspense is killing me lol go to 90 already also it's such bullshit that some scores have more weight than others

good game, but like I said in the ST, my initial rating is a 9/10 but I fall to a 7/10 after my frustration with the EMMI and their poor design. Can't imagine how annoyed I would be if I was a reviewer and had to plow through them in a week or less to get the review out. Or do reviewers not finish games these days? Not actually sure.

Or - and this is a mind blowing concept - reviewers did play the game, finish it, and were not as bothered by the EMMI stuff, and so they continued to love it.

What exactly was poorly designed about the EMMIs?

Your experience is not the only experience with the game.

I never was bothered by the EMMI stuff and honestly quite enjoyed the encounters. Looking at your posts in the ST, maybe you were just engaging with them in a frustrating manner rather than the design being frustrating? On my current playthrough, for example, I've mostly been ignoring the stealth options like the Phantom Cloak and just using the variety of movement options given to you to juke my way past them, which makes them barely a stealth section at all.

I finished the game in two days and would score it a 9 or maybe even a 10. Lots of people loved the EMMIs.

??? I beat the game in four days, while dealing with work, and the EMMI's were never annoying.

The stealth ability, especially in the underwater sections, and controls do not lend themselves to it being a fair stealth experience. It really becomes just a run into the room and hope you don't get spotted during that run otherwise rinse and repeat over and over and over. I must have done some of these EMMI sections 30+ times. I tried playing stealthy but after the first handful of deaths it just becomes tiresome and makes me want to quit the game. I stick with it and get over the hurdles though, and the rest of the game is great. Just sucks when there is such a sore spot, worse than the annoying stealth sections in the spider-man PS4 game since there are so many more of them.

Tolerate I can see, but love?

You're a magical gamer if so lol

Your problem I think is that you're treating it like a stealth encounter to begin with. That's not really a good description of the EMMIs. I barely ever used the phantom cloak, it only ever made sense to use when I knew I was going to be caught in the line of sight, like if I hit a dead end.

The EMMI sections were much more about swift platforming than stealth.

maybe but especially in the water areas that is impossible, like you walk in and that dude just knows you're there immediately. I need to watch a speed runner play through these sections to find out the tricks because if there are anymore of them I am going to go insane.

Admittedly that one is a pretty obnoxious EMMI encounter, but it's one 15 minute thing in a 10 hour game lol

Yeah the EMMI areas moreso function as tests of movement than tests of stealth. If you have a mastery over the game's movement, then it will be difficult for them to catch up to you. I only ever really used the phantom cloak to save myself when I screwed up my movement. I wouldn't recommend using it as your primary tool.

The E.M.M.I. are great when you use patients and the phantom cloak on one hand and quick thinking and good platforming on the other. It's a mixture, and you should approach those sections as the puzzles they are.

The trick is

sequence breaking and getting the gravity suit early

maybe for you, think I was stuck there for an hour. Every EMMI encounter outside of the first one has just been an exercise in futility for me I hate it

The first time you have to face any EMMI area, the best thing to do is to look around as much as possible, searching for the rooms nearby and how to access them. I also don't like stealth and i've had my share of suffering with the EMMIs, but everything gets easier if you know where to go. It's a puzzle of sorts. It's such a good feeling when you manage to get past them that i can't consider them a negative feature in the game.

it is seriously my only major complaint (wish I could use the dpad to move as well) in this otherwise great game. Really enjoying the combat and the difficulty in it but man these sections drag me down. Hoping I don't have that many more since I have the gravity suit now but I can already tell I won't be coming back to this game in the future unless these are updated in some way

I had absolutely no trouble with the blue or purple EMMIs, I don't understand how everyone seemed to have so many issues.

You use the grapple beam to move quickly underwater, Adam even explicitly says this.

People forget the Emmi react to noise, they bang around and shoot stuff and wonder why they are constantly targeted. If it's relatively near you, pop the cloak, drop down a platform or 2 and go about your day again.

that only works if there is a blue magnetic area to grapple to though right? dont think it behaves differently underwater to grapple to anything

As someone who does really like the game, I don't blame you for being bothered by them. They absolutely can be frustrating. I definitely didn't get better at dealing with them till more recently

Virtually every underwater area in an EMMI zone, especially the purple one, have those magnet walls on at least one wall or ceiling.

maybe I just missed it due to frustration I dunno. These EMMI zones have been very irritating is all I can say and like I said earlier are the only issue I have but theyre so major I don't think I will be coming back to this one like I do with the other metroid games often :(

I think Emmi were great. And one reason apart from great implementation is that they were such a small part of the game. The mechanic didn't turn to annoying because of that and traditional Metroid game was still the main course while Emmi added some spice and tension to the mix.

I thought they created some incredibly tense and sometimes hilarious moments. Pretty much 90% of the videos I saved were involving EMMIs.

They would've been much more frustrating if the checkpoints weren't extremely forgiving and loading from death took more than 5 seconds.

The underwater E.M.M.I. sections are either very short, or have loads of grapple points to increase your movement speed. It's all about adapting to the playstyle needed.

I don't even recall being that troubled by the purple EMMI during my first playthrough. By that point I was so used to EMMIs in general that I think I died maybe 4-5 times to it total

And that's counting being confused by the ending of it for a bit

Maybe it'll give me more trouble this time around (second playthrough) but I've been zooming past EMMI sections so far. It's really fun to just completely outmaneuver them once you have a handle on Samus' movement.

U can use flash shift to skip some of the water areas where the EMMI resides. A lot of people forgot about Samus movement abilities. I probably died just one there, it was pretty easy to maneuver around there

In my case I’m slow with analog aiming and the water made movement unbearably slow as well
