I dunno why Nintendo acquiring the IP is somehow a sign that they want to move on from Platinum. They may just be protecting against a potential acquisition from another company, or they may just want the rights without any strings attached. We don’t know the relationship or anything might be happening at Platinum. Nintendo had an idea in my mind (for whatever reason) to get the IP fully for themselves. They saw how Bayonetta 3 is turning out.
Maybe they want a more stable company to do it like Monolith. I think it’s a downplay to say “let them do what they do best”. Well nobody knew Guerrilla Games could do Horizon Zero Dawn from all those subpar shooting Killzone games.
There have been interviews from Monolith employees saying they’ve wanted to make an Action game.
There’s also the matter of the Astral Chain IP not having the size nor momentum of the Xeno IP. And even if they want to put Xeno on hold, I’d imagine they’d probably go for a new IP instead. Not to mention that, given world events the past couple of years, an IP where you play as a police officer might not be that well received. It’s obviously a fantastical SciFi setting, but the optics still may not be great. At the very least, it’s not what I would put one of my best studios on.
I dunno, I just don’t see it. If Astral Chain is still kicking, I’d bet on it sticking with Platinum or going to a new developer entirely, while Monolith continues Xeno or creates a new IP entirely.
