We don’t know the relationship or anything might be happening at Platinum. Nintendo had an idea in my mind (for whatever reason) to get the IP fully for themselves. They saw how Bayonetta 3 is turning out.

Maybe they want a more stable company to do it like Monolith. I think it’s a downplay to say “let them do what they do best”. Well nobody knew Guerrilla Games could do Horizon Zero Dawn from all those subpar shooting Killzone games.

There have been interviews from Monolith employees saying they’ve wanted to make an Action game.
I dunno why Nintendo acquiring the IP is somehow a sign that they want to move on from Platinum. They may just be protecting against a potential acquisition from another company, or they may just want the rights without any strings attached.

There’s also the matter of the Astral Chain IP not having the size nor momentum of the Xeno IP. And even if they want to put Xeno on hold, I’d imagine they’d probably go for a new IP instead. Not to mention that, given world events the past couple of years, an IP where you play as a police officer might not be that well received. It’s obviously a fantastical SciFi setting, but the optics still may not be great. At the very least, it’s not what I would put one of my best studios on.

I dunno, I just don’t see it. If Astral Chain is still kicking, I’d bet on it sticking with Platinum or going to a new developer entirely, while Monolith continues Xeno or creates a new IP entirely.

Big post will become lost, but eh

The Persona games are excellent games and fun time sinks. In my personal opinion; P4 > P3 > P5. All of them have a fun cast, a cool setting, awesome music and some cool stuff like social links, Persona/Demon fusion and cool boss battles. The only bad parts are some problematic takes on LBHTIQ characters, the most disappointing story imo with Kanji in 4. Some people also don't like the school/jobs/social link/going into dungeons as it takes some time management, but that's more of a personal thing.

In regards to the games themselves...

Persona 3 (I played the FES version) is a good game and a great introduction to the series. The core cast is good, the setting moodier compared to the other two games, but ultimately its a great ride. In terms of QoL P3P might be the least "accessible" title of the three as P4 and especially P5 are far modern games, but even with a bit less smooth experience P3 is an excellent game. Honestly I have wanted to replay 3 for a long time, so insert Akihiko meme "I've been waiting for this!"

Persona 4 the Golden (PC) In the end the best Persona game. It's a game where the core cast has a bit more zip in terms of characters and they're a fun bunch overall. (Rise is only thirsty as fuck) And yeah, I personally love Kanji, but the handling of his sexuality should have been better. Way better. It has its silly Japan tropes, but as a game to play its really tight, I feel the game offers more freedom than a P3 or P4 and more importantly the music is pretty damn good. It also has the protag living with his uncle and niece, who have a really cool dynamic with the protaganist. I have the Golden on PC, but I really want to replay it on Switch. That's how much I like it.

Persona 5 (both vanilla and Royal) in the end ranks third in my list, but do not let that stop you; Royal is the definitive version because Morgana backs off a bit and doesn't order you to sleep. It a great refinement of the previous Persona's; it has a fun cast, the dungeons are pretty cool, the extra content in Royal is cool and more important, the music is amazing. Life will change, Rivers in the Desert, Last Surprise etc. are extremely catchy. Plus Persona 5 has, one can not deny it, style.

Hope this helps!

A couple of other points I'd like to add:

-Persona 3 has one very long dungeon that you traverse throughout the entire game. In my opinion it got tedious quickly, and doesn't have the same kind of progression 4 and 5 do, though the rest of the game is definitely good. That being said I like 4 and 5 WAY more, and I took years to get into 4 because I originally played 3 on the PSP and didn't like it enough to want more.

-3 and 4 have randomly generated dungeon designs, whereas 5's have fixed and deliberate designs. 3 and 4's dungeons remind me a bit of the Mystery Dungeon series, whereas 5's are more in line with something like Tokyo Mirage Sessions.

-All three games are pretty long, but 5 extremely so. The game often takes players 100+ hours to finish. It's one of the longest JRPGs ever made, probably, though not quite DQ7-tier. You'll spend a lot of time reading dialogue that may seem a bit superfluous. Most people who are not extremely patient will say that the game has some kind of pacing issue.

-3 has a kind of edgy vibe, but in a way that feels in line with kind of the sleeker side of the emo aesthetic from the late 2000s. 4, despite being a murder mystery, is a lot more happy and cheery, with a vibe that feels like a cross between Haruhi and Scooby-Doo. 5 sits in between both and has some of the most stylish menus ever made.

If people want to experience what Bayonetta 3 and Astral Chain would be like on a non-Nintendo system, just close your eyes and cover your ears.

If Nintendo want to invest in series like Metroid, Fire Emblem, and Xenoblade - none of which were guaranteed to shift 3 to 4 million units, the way they're beginning to (Xenoblade 3 I believe in you), I'm not sure why it's outlandish they'd look at a new IP that broke 1 million at the first time of asking and consider whether it's also worth investing in. Hell, they're going ahead with Bayonetta 3, for example.

If anything I'd look at that investment in that handful of enthusiast-facing, single-player IP and wonder what else Nintendo might have for that audience. I mean I sure don't think Nintendo will drop Monolith Soft from Xenoblade duties to make Astral Chain; but Monolith Soft are triple the size they used to be and still expanding. Who's to say Nintendo aren't thinking of having Monolith Soft and Platinum collaborate?

There are games that were published/shown Nintendo first, and I associate with them, like Dragon Quest XI S and Trials of Mana, but to be honest, when I look at the blurry mess they are, I prefer to play them on PS4/PS5... although I still play some games on switch first, like those old Resident Evil ports, 2D Sonic and games from the PS3 era... those usually don't suffer much, and the portability is godly.

I'm thinking Platinum's involvement with an Astral Chain sequel really might depend largely on how busy they are with their trying to get their own stuff off the ground right now. I do have a hard time seeing Nintendo deciding to do one without Platinum, but what Nate said certainly has me wondering more now about why Nintendo decided to acquire the full rights to the IP rather than continue to split it with Platinum.

Thanks

That's a good point about making sure the IP wouldn't be in trouble if Platinum ever got acquired by someone else, but I think that it wouldn't necessarily be Production Group 1 (the Xenoblade team) working on Astral Chain if Nintendo asked Monolith to take over. I could imagine them putting together a new team with all the expanding Monolith's been doing lately, especially if Hiroshi Ando would be director like some of us are speculating.

Also I feel like any Astral Chain sequel may want to move away from the police angle no matter who's developing

It was already announced that this game will have a simultaneous release worldwide.

Yeah my only concern with the DQ games is that they're generally published by Nintendo in the west so they might pull a "not a third here" nonsense.

I hope not, especially if we get III also would be a big moment and leave it for japan only wouldn't feel the same.

I also really hope Loop8 gets localized cause it looks very interesting and it's not talked as much as some of the other games.

I think one of the best ways to test that is the Pikmin 3 Deluxe route where they rerelease older games to see how well they sell on Switch.

I feel like F-Zero GX would be perfect for something like that.

Alright it’s prediction time. Here’s what I think we see for sure tomorrow:

  • Mario + Rabbids
  • Tactics Ogre
  • Final Fantasy Pixel Collection
  • Persona 3 and 4
  • Batman: Arkham Trilogy
  • Alan Wake Remastered
  • No Man’s Sky
  • Falcom OR Gust (Japan only)
  • Nier Automata
  • Tales of Arise
  • Something from EA
  • Overwatch 2
  • Something from Capcom (honestly don’t know what this could be, AA?)

Yeah, expansion is definitely a different story. I wouldn’t be surprised if Taura’s team gets poached.

Honestly I'm disappointed they haven't tried something like that with F Zero. But that's the route they went down with Metroid - collaborate with Mercury Steam one a remake, and if it works, build up the relationship and go ahead with a new game.

I really don't want Monolith to make a cop game. I'd rather that incredibly generic medieval fantasy art with the red haired knight be real over that.

My naivity of thinking we would get some nice Treehouse deep dives for Zelda at E3 his year really fucked with my expectations I had 1 week ago.
I am pretty much in a state of "give me whatever Nintendo, I bet it will still be fun" and thats okay. Zelda will come when it comes.

Prime 1 could be really amazing and the rest of the year seems to have some really nice games too.

Personally my most Top 3 hyped games for the rest of the year are potentially Nier Automata, Metroid Prime and Bayonetta 3.
Could change tho if Splatoon 3s singleplayer impresses me. But as of now the game gives me some "eh, gonna wait for a sale" vibes.
But I adore the Octo Expansion so its probably because of the still tiny pieces of footage we've got of the SP.

Listening to Nate. That sounded like…wow I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but the Astral Chain 2 possibly being done by Monolith had some real confidence talk behind it lol

Mercury Steam were the ones that proposed making a remake (Fusion in their case), a studio would have to have proposed a f-zero remake/new game for such a thing to happen. I dont think Nintendo is searching a studio to make the game so it all will depend on 3rd parties

BTW, apparently the Mario and Rabbids 2 release date may have been leaked for Oct 20th, as found by Shifu in the recent M+R 2 thread. It contains new screenshots as well.

PLAYABLE
BOWSER
LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOO

That was probably intended as a reveal for tomorrow/Wednesday/whenever the hell we're seeing this game next, haha.

A Metroid Fusion remake would be so amazing damn. Metroid really should get the Zelda treatment....getting remasters and remakes in between new releases.
I hope Prime1 is only the beginning.

I had a good feeling about M+R ever since we saw Davide crying at E3. The passion he and his team puts into these games rivals what Nintendo does with Mario themselves.
Exactly…I love seeing that and he’s a person I’d want leading any team. Dude has a ton of heart and care.

Also idk if I've just been playing too much Fortnite lately but the worlds in those screenshots look straight out of it lmao.

Not in a bad way. The style works very well for the game.
