Yes, exactly. If next week's Direct is a Partner, then I don't think there's any way we make it to September without another presentation. Barring something like a Twitter barrage.
We’re absolutely not getting to September without Bayonetta 3 dated, or at least delayed.

I actually would be shocked if there isn’t at least one brand new first party games yet to be announced that’s coming this year

It's not like those things aren't announced. The things that would've been announced at time X may instead be talked about earlier or later. Net difference of nothing.
The games that are released in a year are indifferent to the format or timing in which they are announced, but some people give a lot of importance to "how" they are announced, everyone has their preference.

How long before we get the snitch posting? Do we think trailers are starting to be uploaded on YouTube during the weekend (assuming he works at YouTube)?

I'd be happy with multiple events if Nintendo telegraphed it. Keeps things chill. If people knew that it was going to be Xenoblade 3 Direct, Partner Showcase, regular Mini, Splatoon 3, Indie World, for example.

I'm agreed if we've got a Partner Showcase this week, it'd be very odd to then get a full length Direct in July. I guess there's the angle that maybe Nintendo had to abide by marketing agreements to promote certain games in June, but I'm really not sure how likely that is to be the case.

If we do end up getting a "proper" Direct later in the Summer (prior to September) then I really hope mainline FE is somehow still on the table for 2022 lol. December release, I guess.

My serious take is that a Partner Direct in late June feels very misguided considering the circumstances. It would only make sense if:
1) There's something else coming before the traditional September Direct
2) They're splitting up the marketing for their first party releases for whatever reason
3) There's something going on behind the scenes that we're not privy of leading to a 2020-like situation where first party software isn't ready for whatever reason

Yeah that where also my conclusions and take why Nintedo using the „2020“ “Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase“ Format again.

I think they're sitting on something as well, which I predict will be either the October game or the holiday game. However, if it's a holiday game, I don't think September is too "late" for marketing to start.

Why they will do a Partner right now and then after couble of weeks a big General Direct. It make no sense to me
Nintendo has a lot more stuff dated for the second half of 2022 than is "normal" before the E3 Direct.

So, whatever the next big Direct is, it's going to be more focused on 2023 stuff than 2022 stuff. So they may think they need something in June to get things done (Bayonetta, M+R) but 2023 stuff really doesn't need to be announced that far in advance.

Don’t expect a full General Direct until at least late Sept/early Oct, we’ll get the mini next week with third parties and maybe one Nintendo game (Metroid Prime Redux) then July/Aug/early Sept will be game focused Directs (Splatoon 3, Mario & Rabbids)

I think Bayo will be an early 2023 game at this point.

Yeah, agreed. There's more going on that we're not aware of, I think.

Which to be fair is always the case... but this isn't quite business as usual and I don't think E3's cancellation is enough reason to change their usual format. If they needed a big event for general Directs, we wouldn't get the February and September shows.
Precisely. There’s obviously the off chance that they brought back their least watched and most hated Direct format for shits and giggles but I don’t really subscribe to the "Nintendo being Nintendo" school of thought.

October game is going to be M+R 2 IMO.

That's partially why this is so weird to me. Nintendo surely has something for October, and likely something other than just Pokemon in November. And while you could probably get away with revealing a November game in September, you really kind of can't with an October game. It's just too close.

The September Direct is always the week before TGS due to third party games. So it won't be late September this year, it'll be September 7th.

Damn, I really have to admit, that in the End Jeff was right, that Nintendo indeed slices it up in more smaller parts.

Never thought he would be more precise than Nate on this 😞🫤😵‍💫

And what do you think, they don't release them simply because they don't like money?
I think partly they want to use them to sell a new Hardware

releasing unfinished Pokemon games every year will carry the sales until then

for some games, there could be some struggle in finishing them in a shorter more healthier period

Maybe, for some reason, they want to do a first party-focused Direct? Maybe they want to have deep dives on several upcoming games (BotW2, Splatoon 3, Bayo 3, Pokemon, etc.) in addition to a couple of new reveals (Prime HD, mainline FE, DK?) and don't want to overshadow 3rd party stuff and/or make the Direct too long. I dunno, just spitballing.

If the games are going to be used as a system seller for Switch 2, the logical thing is that they would have much better graphics than, for example, what was seen in the new Fire Emblem, so I discard that option.

Because of contract obligations before E3 announced they were cancelling for the year or there’s something bigger going on here like hardware coming or they just decided to split first and third party announcements

Yeah I think Nintendo don’t need to have the Sept Direct to line up with TGS, they could easily just let any Japanese games get announced buy the individual publishers around then.

That's two days before Splatoon 3 comes out though
True, but that doesn't matter too much I don't think. TGS starts on Thursday September 15th in Japan, so the Direct will take place before that date, and they always do the week before. I'd bet on it.

I'm personally just going to await next week's Partner Showcase, and then afterwards wait until Nate has something new and kind of concrete for us. Otherwise it's just obsessively browsing this thread to see what happens anyways.

There is no big holiday game. September Direct is too late for that. No, Pokémon isn’t the only holiday game. Nintendo has more first party games to announce. Splatoon is September. More first party games have to be announced somewhere

Broke: Fighting over what date is real next week.
Woke: Believing there are 2 events next week so both dates are real.

4) Switch Pro

Mario and Rabbids 2 is a big game for Nintendo this year. If Nintendo has the first showing of it since last year in the Direct, and other relatively big announcements, they will absolutely announce the direct before hand on Monday, like they pre-announced the Partner Mini that had the Monster Hunter games.

I know there is confusion about whether Bayonetta 3 could be called a "true" first party, but from a marketing stand point they absolutely position it as a partnership with Platinum since Nintendo itself isn't associated with creating these kinds of games, so if Bayonetta 3 is releasing this year, I would also expect that here.

I could see the rest of the year playing out as October/November being some combo of M+R2, Metroid Prime, and Pokemon. That'd be strong enough for the rest of the year IMO since Spatoon 3 is September.

I'd be a bit disappointed in that, but if we're getting new Fire Emblem and BOTW2 in early 2023 then that's more than good enough for me.

I don't think anything is wrong behind the scenes. Nintendo has been more consistent at releasing games than any other pub since Covid started. In,2020 what got hit was marketing and production. We always heard how Japan was hurt the most from Covid and WFH but the most consistent releases have been from Japanese studios. Coming back to Nintendo, they have done 4 Generals back to back and the majority of those games from them have released already. Two of them will come in the coming months, another one is slated for this year. Out of all those games, only one has been delayed.

The onky thing that comes to mind is (for me), Nintendo is close to their next chapter. I don't think the console will year, but next year. It would be better to save announcement and releases for the next one. Unless they want a Wii U 2.0 situation.

Summarizing, Nintendo already got their marketing back in order, and weren't hit as hard as Western pubs in delevopment.

I still think they had something from the Mario team planned to release in time for the movie, delaying the movie may have potentially delayed this out of 2022. I think what we know is coming this year is all we will get, Mario&Rabbids being the big November release along with Pokémon. Probably Advance Wars in December

June direct becomes a July direct?

Nintendo’s been like the sole publisher taking advantage of July for years now. Nobody else puts anything out that month, they can dominate the news cycle for the whole month leading into holiday buildup.

he'll probably start tweeting some teases a few days before the direct. would be nice to have some actually reliable hints and teases to discuss.

I really believe we will see EPD Tokyos next game this year. Whatever it may be. Probably releasing in October.

Personally I am still hoping its a 2D Donkey Kong with EPD ( pardon me) going ape shit on the level and environment design.

I can wait for a new 3D Mario. Odyssey is one of my absolute favorites but so is Donkey Kong and the last one came out in 2014!!!

On Resetera, Nate hinted at Mario and Rabbids 2 being ready to release in time for the holidays, so I would at the very least expect it in late October which would fit in Nintendo's holiday calendar.

Some of y'all need a therapist more than a Direct at this point; all this complaining and anger over something that hasn't been officially announced is depressing to witness. Anyway I'm fine if this turns out to be a Partner Direct since I enjoyed the previous ones, there was always at least one thing that caught my attention during those presentations.
Yeah, one of the key points of the Switch was to consolidate their handheld and console 1st party lineups to prevent droughts. It's been a failure in that aspect.
How has it been a failure if there haven't been any droughts during the Switch era?

I wonder if, because of Drake (presumably next year), Nintendo is trying to experiment on their presentation schedules

the reality of longer development time, more resources needed and as much as people don't wanna hear it, a pandemic thats still going on.

Nintendo not doing a Direct and slicing everything up into multiple parts is honestly the worst of all worlds:
  • Can't get too excited for any one event as they're inherently limited
  • Can't predict or get excited for other events
  • More chance of people missing any one particular thing
  • Or, more chance of things being unsatisfying shadow drops
  • Generally less community enjoyment and positivity
  • Big stuff might just be tossed onto Twitter unceremoniously
  • Hurts reception to the games there as people are gonna be more negative to begin with
  • Greater chance of each event disappointing due to their limited scope
  • Increased chances of leaks, and more time spent avoiding the

Being a Nintendo fan just isn't that fun anymore, honestly. The games, yeah - I'm having a really good time with Xenoblade: DE - but everything else is just... bleh. The glory days of regular Directs and a big E3 blowout with long Treehouse sections are long, long, long behind us.
