Couldn't care less about a Partner Direct. Like most others I bought a Switch for Nintendo games.

Rarely will I ever purchase a 3rd party game on the Switch instead of my PS5 or PC.

things that could conceivably be at a Partner showcase

-yakuza
-persona
-rdr2
-mario rabbids
-literally any 3rd party game you've been waiting for

and y'all disappointed? smdh y'all saying you're gonna be hungry on the way to the all you can eat buffet

I thought it was common sense that Goldeneye would appear at Xbox's annual gamescom showcase in August, to me it makes no sense that a major first party game from Xbox would be revealed in a direct.

I don't think MS considers it a major release, if it's just a remaster of the original. It's a cool announcement, sure, but not something that they would necessarily save for a big show of their own, I think.

Bit of a bummer if Nintendo aren't willing to talk more right now. If Bayonetta 3 and Sparks of Hope get 2022 dates, then the rest of the year is pretty solid for me but not up there with 2017 or 2019 (2019's second half was nuts, especially).

That being said, I'd love to get some Dragon Quest news, something on Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters, and the option to play Arkham Aslyum on Switch. For newer releases, Fantasian and Tunic on Switch would be good, though I might play the latter on Game Pass at some point. Ideally, getting a reveal and a date for Good-Feel's self-published game would be wonderful. Stuff like that, or a new indie collaboration or a big third party surprise, would make it worthwhile for me.
Will sure be funny when the Mini comes around and people are disappointed, then next month we get the hardware reveal with accompanying general direct!

Heh, if only, right?
If they're focusing on third parties right now, I can't help but wonder if they follow it up with more first-party news relatively soon. It's a puzzling move when we'd heard earlier this year that they had plenty of software good to go and could easily launch multiple games per month. I suppose one answer is things got shoved around and pushed back. That could also relate to hardware timing.
i'm still surprised people consider games not first party just because they're developed by third party studios. that is like most of nintendo's output. smash, kirby, fire emblem, even games like link's awakening. bayonetta 3 is a first party game.
The line on this was blurred when Cadence of Hyrule and Age of Calamity featured in Partner events, I think.

There's probably no special reason as to why Nintendo would pivot to a Partners thing next week. It's just how they've decided to do things.

Nothing nefarious, nothing altruistic. Trying to come up with explanations as to why is a pointless endeavour.

I'm getting the impression that everyone here would have been less disappointed if there was just flat-out no Direct at all next week.
It’s true. The main hook of Directs for me always was the back-to-back presentation of really huge Nintendo titles and smaller indie/3rd party games.
But just taking those smaller titles which are often not too impressive (at least in most Partner Directs of 2020), using the famous „Direct“ moniker and sending them into the YouTube dislike abyss, I don’t really know what to think about that.

Ding ding ding.
The last year has mainly been lower budget games and ports.
And we also happen to be 5 and a half years into the console's life.

At this point there are very solid odds Nintendo is planning on launching a new console next year and is holding back stuff like Metroid Prime 4 and a 3D Mario game for it. But people want to believe this will be a 10 year console generation so we all ignore reality. Even though Drake's hardware is clearly too good to be a pro, and would only make sense to launch a 5nm based Orin device late 2023 or early 2024. The signs are there people!
What? Going from last October, we've gotten/getting Metroid Dread, Pokemon Legends Arceus, a brand new 3D Kirby game, Switch Sports, Xenoblade 3, Splatoon 3, and the next gen Pokemon game. It's not mostly ports and low budget games lol

I just had a thought regarding the "what are they thinking" sentiment..

What if, without the shackles of E3, they're trying to take a page from SGF and parse out stuff over a few weeks or so in order to give each segment a spotlight and stay in the conversation for a longer period of time?
This is exactly what I'm thinking. Pokemon showcase, Xenoblade direct, partner showcase... and then hardware reveal, general direct and Splatoon 3 direct? I know I'm very much giving the best case scenario here, but it's a possibility.

do you remember the first 2 partner directs?

We got SMTV in the first one at least...

I still enjoyed watching them, even if they weren't great. But surely they have better stuff this time around. Dates for Bayo 3 or M&R2 would automatically make it good show for me, personally.

What i was saying is that it would be a major announcement for their gamescom show, which msotly has announcements for smaller titles and announced games. Goldeneye will probably be there as the biggest announcement of the show. No way a first party game by Xbox will appear in a direct.

I still hate the Idea of for a "Partner Showcase" i still am but at the NEd of the Day, let's be honest...

Still sad that we have to wait even longer till "I don't knoew when" for Zelda BotW 2 News.

Partner Direct possibilities:
  • Persona series
  • Mario & Rabbids 2
  • Bayonetta 3
  • 2008 multiplatform port
  • Sonic Frontiers
  • Hogwarts Legacy
  • Silksong
  • Goldeneye
  • Portal collection
  • Overwatch 2
  • Sports Story
  • Square Enix (Live la Live, etc.)
  • Something from Nintendo (MP remaster?)
  • ?????

Could be a good show everyone. Just gotta change your expectations!

And we know Nintendo has to at least reveal the new FE at some point, so maybe we will get a more first-party focused Direct before September. If not, September will be one hell of a show!
I like you're thinking. My 3rd party purchases on Switch are all Indies or smaller titles so I love a good indie direct and hated every partner one, but.... Never played Portal so I'd like to get a release date on that and if Goldeneye is real I'll be happy. I'll be ecstatic if Silksong got a date but I think it's unlikely.

Mario+Rabbids, Persona and Sonic all seem safe bets (but not my cup of tea) so it could be a decent direct

The only thing that gives me pause on this being a Partner Direct is the Xenoblade Direct leak that stated the game would have a final trailer in a Direct next week. Unless Nintendo refers to Monolith Soft as a Partner, this seems like a normal Mini.
To be honest I find it weird that they would have Nintendo stuff at all in a Partner Direct, even a Mario Kart DLC drop. Those aren't about that normally.

Why are people panicking? Fire Emblem is sure to be there. It's leaked fgs. I even suspect this whole Direct is just to reveal it, sprinkled with some third party stuff.

Don't tell me you don't care about Fire Emblem...
Ok, I won‘t tell you I don’t care about Fire Emblem

but I’m thinking it

if I were nintendo and I was launching new hardware sometime within the next 9 months I would also hold all of my interesting first party announcements to coincide with the new hardware reveal, especially if they're gonna take advantage of the new hardware

like "wind waker and twilight princess HD" is a mid announcement

"wind waker and twilight princess 4K with HDR" is a way better announcement but they can only announce it once the new hardware exists publicly

Well, it seems weird that they would hold off so many games like Metroid Prime DE/HD and the WWHD+TPHD ports for a 4K Switch to me, and I think the Switch 2 is still a ways off, going off of Nintendo's comments about the Switch being about in the middle of it's lifecycle. While I don't think Nintendo is going to iterate upon the Switch, like Apple does with its products, I do think they'll keep the Hybrid console concept but I don't think we'll see the next generation Nintendo console from them next year, or even 2024. A 4K Switch, sure, but something else not really
They're holding back those HD remasters to hype up their respective new games in the series. It was not logical to expect MP HD years before MP4, Nintendo would release it close to MP4 to generate hype, as the series certainly needs it.
The quality Is top notch, Absolutely. I Just found Is quite thin in terms of quantity/published games. It's a really weird scenario, tbf
Thin? There are 6 Nintendo published games coming in the latter half of the year. Sony has one and Microsoft has absolutely zero atm.

Remember when Nintendo used to have a big holiday game every year? Good times.

Now they don't even have to bother with that because Pokemon obsessively releasing like clockwork will always be there to tick that box
Pokemon is coming out this Holiday.......

And the Legacy of Iwata is long gone too. Directs in 2011-2014 were a frequent and great way to communicate with the fans. What Nintendo’s doing lately doesn’t really fit that imo.

I agree with this.

I don't really understand why everyone is jumping to the "if it's a partners showcase, then that means there's no general Direct until September" conclusion. Why does a showcase of third-party titles prevent them from discussing first-party titles for two more months?

Nate even said he's expecting more first-party info this summer.

I can tell you they're not gonna announce RDR2 because if they did it'd be a Pardner Showcase not a Partner Showcase

I mean either the WWHD+TPHD releases this year, or this is the first year in about 9-10 years without a Zelda release, because if they're holding them for a revision they're not releasing until 2024.

People saying there is only Splatoon and Pokemon are wrong. I'm pretty sure Mario + Rabbids is the October game and it is essentially a first-party game for Nintendo as it still is a Mario game.

Even in rather packed 2017 the first game essentially had the whole of August and September to itself.

"All ignore reality" are you actually dismissing Nintendo's words of the Switch being in the middle of it's life cycle
They actually haven't said that since 2020, which was 3 years in.
In 2021 what they said was that "it is in the mid cycle of its life" which is much more vague. Technically anything between the beginning and end is the "mid cycle" of a console's life. And especially if they plan to run the switch for a year and a half to 2 years into the switch 2's life then it certainly doesn't seem to deny a new console coming 2023 or 2024 to me.

The problem with a Direct focused on third party isn't that people here hate those games, it's that we all know what third party means with Nintendo. It's not gonna be Monster Hunter Rise caliber game one after the other, those literally happen once in a generation if we're lucky. It's going to be ports, ports, ports and a couple cool mid range japanese game. It's not that exciting when the expectation was BotW, Prime, Fire Emblem...

Like Sony just made it work this month with a strong 3rd Party State of Play but somehow I doubt Capcom and Square Enix are about to reveal 3 huge projects here.

I’m sure there will be a clubhouse games/big Brain academy/game builder garage type release announced two months before release. Those were all good. If it’s not stinky horse, it could be a nice surprise

The line on this was blurred when Cadence of Hyrule and Age of Calamity featured in Partner events, I think.
I don't think the line is blurred at all, those are NIntendo IP's developed by companies not at all owned by Nintendo or anything, same with Mario + Rabbids 2. Bayo 3 is just a Nintendo funded product, hence the exclusivity

I just got up and what I'm seeing is it's not really a Partner direct. Just a Direct Mini with a bit more 3rd party? I'm fine with that.
That's what I'm thinking. No updates for upcoming first party games, as they will have their own Directs like Xeno. Just pure reveals.

New Style Savvy, after predicting it from summer 2020 onwards...

Tbh I understand people who are frustrated when these Nintendo "Insiders" have been saying a propper direct is happening this month for past couple of weeks then all of sudden the last 2 weeks of June they all back track or saying "Plans have change".
No one, at least not any reliable insider, has backtracked or said plans changed. They said a Nintendo direct next week, and by all accounts there will be one. Whether it’s a partner direct, mini, general, it’s known that no insider knows what the specific branding will be .

Like the discussion about the Succ®, I think it might not be a Mini, nor a Partner, and they could start a new branding.

Unsure. I've heard a few things that I have not yet been able to confirm but I'm thinking a first-party Direct may still come this summer. As to why they are spacing things out... who knows.
I'm unfamiliar with how NA defines it's seasons into months, if there was still one this summer, would that be up till August or could it be in the standard September Direct slot and still be a Summer Direct?

The other thing that's possible is Nintendo is literally just testing the waters to see what shaking up their normal patterns does. Like they might literally be trying to see if a Partner Showcase followed by a first-party Direct can work the same way splitting indies into their own presentations separate from regular Directs has worked. Like imagine if the new pattern is for every Direct month is that we get an Indie Showcase, a Partner Showcase, and a General Direct?

Honestly it feels like Nintendo is holding back a bunch of first party games for a new Switch.
I know others have said this, but if that's the case then why is XB3 releasing now? If ever there were a Nintendo franchise that needed help from new hardware, it's Xenoblade. If they're holding games back for Drake I'd strongly expect Xenoblade to be one of them, and yet..? 🤷‍♂️

Our resident Famiboard insider Nate has never, ever said it's a general. Technically, whatever carries the Direct branding is a "proper" Direct. Nate said Direct next week, there is a Direct next week

I think its very likely the 2 is coming off in 2024. I dont think it will come in 2023 because i do think nintendo wants to make the switch last longer and all (although the main key of evidence that its coming in 2023 is that zelda most likely wont get delayed to 2024). But even if it comes in 2023 i think we will get a loot of crossgen games, the main candidates being BOTW 2, MP4, perhaps the next mario?
