It seems to me like it's just gonna be a normal direct but nothing special, not an "E3 direct" like we're used to this time of year. It kind of makes sense because
1.E3 is dead anyway, they really have no reason to do an "E3 direct" anymore.
2.Splatoon and Zelda probably get their own dedicated directs so they don't necessarily have that much to show here.

Tom heard something Mario-specific is going down. In turn, he assumed that meant the Mario thing was happening next week, and therefore not a Direct.

You, on the other hand, for sure know a Direct is happening. So in actuality, both this Mario-specific thing and a Direct of some magnitude are happening next week, but on separate days.

So, are we now assuming we won't get a General Direct? I wonder what Is going in with that rumored Metroid Prime Remake....isn't gonna be there? Is It still a 2022 title?

It’s best to not expect a General. If we get a Mini Direct then there’s a great chance Metroid Prime Remaster shows up

Yeah sounds like Tom is another one of those "there's a meeting that day, so cannot be a Direct" people. None of these guys are Nintendo specific media people, probably havejust a little idea how Nintendo operates. Being random is completely Nintendo.

I think a problem people are having hear is assuming this, when it isn't really based on anything. There's no reason they need to show their big games specifically in June. They only did this because there was a big video game convention (E3). But now there is no E3. So they can show their big guns whenever they want. Nintendo probably wants people focused on Xenoblade and Splatoon right now so I don't expect a lot about Zelda until they come out.

My prediction:
They're gonna do a normal 30 minute direct and mostly go over games already announced, while announcing a Splatoon direct and promising a deep dive into Zelda later in the year. New announcements mostly ports like Windwaker HD.

Seeing a lot of meltdowns already.

Me, I'm waiting for the announcement and then I'm going to sell everything I own, burn my house down and join the Peace Corps.

Yeah, a mini would make sense:
-updates on already released games (Mario strikers, Switch Sports)
- dates for already announced games (M+R 2, Advance Wars, maaaaaybe Bayo 3)
-one single small announcement (MP Remake).

This Will suffice, waiting for a beefier Direct in September
