Yeah, you can tell that the open world came first and then they tried to make the basic elements of Sonic level design (springs and rails) fit into the world. But the topography itself doesn't seem to account for Sonic's moveset at all (unlike Sonic Utopia for example). It's very weird.

I hope we get to see more of this closer to release. It's the main reason why I'm interested in it.
It seems they brought back unit targeting and territory control(which doesn’t show up in most recent licensed warriors games) complete with balance indicator but have also thrown in grunt leveling and selection/boosting which is a first

Pokemon actually looks... really good to me? At least, generally speaking. As someone who was medium on Arceus due to not liking the battle system and lack of battling in general, Scarlet/Violet looks much more up my alley: It is (presumably?) more open-ended and has a lot of focus on exploration, but also has more traditional battles and gyms and such, which is exactly what I wanted for the most part.

Hey! I used to listen to that Tenacious D album all the time during my commute!

Speaking of Sonic, did they fix Sonic Colors on Switch? Is it worth playing it now? Or is still messy?
They fixed some of the more egregious glitches that turned the game into a technicolor fever dream, yeah. Almost immediately, actually. Framerate is still half that of XB/PS if that's a concern of yours.

Sonic: Breath of the Wildfire

Rollin' around at the speed of ambient sound
Got places to be gotta unlock memories
Bravo, yall 👏👏👏

I wonder if FEWTH will have a gated fourth route unlocked by clearing the other 3

Nintendo when making Breath of the Wild: "We chose to focus on 'subdued piano' as the primary musical motif in this game because it allowed us to carefully represent the various elements that make up the 'wild'. From brief piano notes as you explore the wilderness, to the dainty rhythm of your horse's hooves on the floor, to the chaotic scramble of a fight against the Guardians."

Sonic Team: "SUBDUED PIANO = GOOD."

I know this is snarky but it's kind of funny to see developers clearly taking inspiration from Breath of the Wild, but not taking inspiration from why that game was so good. Personally, if I were Sonic Team I'd have looked to Spider-Man PS4 as an example of how music could fit a Sonic open world game. An orchestra/rock soundtrack blaring up as your speed increases is significantly more fitting than "subdued piano."

And yeah this confirms it, despite not being completely clear in the trailer. Open world, free to do it in whatever order:

I think this is probably one of the arguments against Frontiers that I identify with the most. I'm not as big a fan of BotW as most on here, but it definitely understood how its OST was supposed to complement the game's elements.

This Sonic game is not doing that at all. Maybe in the discrete rail levels, it does a better job.

Me, I just miss all the chiptuned New Jack Swing of the OG Sonic games. But even if Frontiers didn't go that direction, the orchestral OST of Generations is right there as an example of how to do music for a Sonic game that fits with Sonic's gameplay elements.

Like, even if they really wanted subdued environment music for when not much is happening to evoke that BoTW feel, tying the music intensity to how active Sonic is at any given moment would have been brilliant.

Ugh, now I won't be able to not think about this lol.

30/60 does not bother me as long as it is consistent for the most part. Would you recommend the Switch version?

I think you’re a bit harsh on Sonic Frontiers. Imo there seems to be some potential in this game.

Potential to be worst than Sonic ‘06, that is.

I've watched both Pokémon and Sonic now, and not feeling Sonic much, there's so much.. I don't know.. potential? That I don't feel like the game is capitalising on.

Games like Spider Man: Miles Morales and Mirror's Edge has proven to me personally how much you can squeeze out of the philosophy of making a journey-is-the-destination kind of game where the true joy and game feel is in the moment-to-moment momentum, and how you can work on making the game experience tactile and stimulating in its movement mechanics to create a game where there's not a second in downtime, while still having a sense of dynamic.

Like, I can just imagine Frontiers going open world, open-ended and non-linear, but still having that non-stop Sonic momentum. I don't think the two are mutually exclusive.

I dunno, it just looked a bit awkward to me when there was these flashy movement moments and then they come to a grinding halt and you just shuffle around to mute piano music.

Pokémon looked like it could be quite cool. I'm not the biggest Pokémon person around, but the new designs looks nice.

I think Sonic Frontiers definitely has potential, so I'm looking forward to it. That said, I maintain that the whole "gotta go fast" design ethos is what's holding Sonic back in many ways. I thought Sonic Jam nailed the movement speed way back in the day. Yeah, it's slower than what was introduced in Adventure, but it allows for more nuanced platforming action and exploration while still feeling faster than your average 3D platformer. As it stands, modern Sonic feels best when you're running at top speed through mostly linear levels. Anything that tries to deviate from that just looks/feels super awkward and jank.

Sonic Frontiers is what would happen if Nintendo simply did what fans wanted them to do based on social media feedback.

It genuinely feels like they started with "Sonic but OPEN WOOOOORLD" and found absolutely no good reason for it to be open world but still went forward with it because fans wants everything open world.

Great work with the OP and hopefully this will be the month I actually take some time to engage in this thread.

Lechonk

I haven't tried it yet myself, but from what I've read it's just as good as the other versions only locked at 30fps (now that the glitches have been fixed). If you want the portability of a Switch version, I'd say go for it. Especially if you haven't yet played the original.

I haven't cared about WH40k in close to a decade but I adore the visual style and I'm surprised that it took so long for something like this to happen.

I want Crush 40 to record a bunch of ambient butt rock to play over Sonic Frontiers. Is that too much to ask?

There are already five or six caveman(!?) games on NSO and yet not a single one of them is Bonk.

Make that make sense.

Even though things are a bit different this year, I am excited to see what announcements we get this month; hopefully Summer Game Fest has more I can get hyped for than previous years. The Pokemon trailer this morning was a nice kick-off to the month, looking forward to learning more about that one!

I’m just so tired of Pokémon games introducing features and concepts that I really like, then removing them in the next game.

I'm 100% sure GF could make a 95+ metacritic game made entirely of cut Pokémons and mechanics from past games.

XY online systems
Emerald Battle Frontier
ORAS NavDex
BW seasons
DPPt event legendary-tier locations/ministory
PLA style capture/traversal
A decent dex of 400 Pokémons not in SwSh

Something to consider tho both are on the other side of town
Maybe Walmart.

Check any store if they are allowing preordering for pick-up. I am doing that with Xenoblade Chronicles 3. Don't want any delays.

Sonic Frontiers? More Like Sonic, Please Take As Much Time As Possible With This Game And Potentially Delay The Game To Next Year. If needed Be

A TV? For playing games? What is this?!? 1864?

Scorcese fans are absolutely insufferable jesus christ
My favorite still living director! What happened now? lol Do I want to know?
I legit wonder how much of an impact that'll have on Konami's bottom line as they'll probably receive a cut of the NSO sub right?

I mean, what else are they doing with Hudson since buying them? Some money is better than no money lol Nintendo should have gotten Hudson, not Konami. What a god damn waste.
